we have a lot to get to. we want to start off with a very serious story that's breaking news out of mississippi where two police officers were gunned down in the middle of the street overnight. sheinelle has more details on that for us. >> good morning. police say the two men who are responsible are in custody but this morning a community is reeling as two officers who were sworn to protect them are dead. officers benjamin deen and liquori tate were shot in cold blood during a traffic stop in hattiesburg, mississippi. police telling our affiliate wdam that at least one of the suspects took off in the officer's patrol car leaving officers on the ground. a bystander telling the alcohol clarion-ledger that one of the officers asked, am i dying? both later died of their injuries. a manhunt began immediately. as officers fanned out across the area vowing to track down the alleged killers. >> men and women go out every day to make sure we're safe were turned on tonight. >> the stole pan troll car found

abandoned a short time later. the mayor confident that justice will be served. >> we have a rich history of finding people who do this kind of thing. >> and it appears he was right. police announcing just a few hours ago both of the suspects kurtus banks and marvin banks are in custody. a woman believed to be in the car is also reportedly in police custody this morning. we're expecting much more information a little later in the day. guys? >> thank you, sheinelle. now to the severe weather wreaking havoc from coast to coast. we've got our team on the ground across the country. let's start in the carolinas where tropical storm ana has just made landfall bringing with it very dangerous surf. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in wrightsville beach, north carolina. gabe, good morning. >> good morning. it is still about three weeks before the official start of hurricane season and tropical storm ana made landfall about two hours ago just to our south. we're seeing some choppy surf and some strong winds. and in the northeast quadrant of the storm, but in between rain bands so for the time being we are dry. but what we are starting to see is all this beach erosion.

ana is forecast to bring up to five -- excuse me up to six inches of rain or so bringing with it dangerous rip currents and some potential flash flooding alone the coast. it is maximum sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour and it is now only the second earliest storm tropical storm to make landfall in the u.s. on record. after being virtually stationary for the past couple of days it is now moving north/northwest at about 5 miles an hour. so expect it to take a turn to the north, and weaken as it moves on to land. now as it moves north it is expected to continue to bring heavy rains up the mid-atlantic into virginia and maryland on tuesday. guys back to you. >> a bunch of rain headed your way. gabe gutierrez in north carolina. gabe thanks. >> want to turn to the wide-ranging and deadly storm stretching from texas to colorado. residents bracing today for flash flooding and baseball size hail and tornadoes. a day after that wild weather

left behind a path of destruction, and death overnight. nbc's kerry sanders is in oklahoma city this morning. kerry, good morning. >> well good morning, erica. the national weather service not only says the conditions are ripe for more tornadoes today, but as you mentioned, the possibility of more heavy rain. which could result in more of those flash floods resulting in the sort of destruction you see right here. tornado alley is on edge yet again today. >> huge. >> reporter: on saturday for the fourth day running, the region lived up to its nickname with more than 40 reports of twisters forming in oklahoma kansas colorado, nebraska, and texas. including this massive one in tiny cisco, 130 miles west of dallas. >> wow! >> reporter: at least one person was killed and three injured when the violent winds struck. storm chasers in cheyenne county colorado recorded tornado -- >> right now very pronounced funnel cloud. >> reporter: -- after tornado.

and southeast of denver this incredible image. of both power and beauty. since wednesday tens of millions of residents in the plains have kept an eye to the sky as the violent weather has brought not only tornadoes but also punishing hail the size of oranges. in some spots, it looked like the aftermath of a snowstorm. and where it rained, flash floods followed. in some cases, completely washing out roads. and those flash floods have picked up a lot of the earth here. this red sort of clay and you can see the river behind me is just that deep dark red. consider this statistic. in norman oklahoma just a short distance from here, last year the national weather service issued eight tornado warnings. so far this year they've issued 64. erica? >> wow. >> that's a scary statistic. kerry sanders, thank you. >> all right now let's continue to move west where even though

it's may the rockies are getting pounded with blizzard-like conditions. nbc's national correspondent miguel almaguer is in rapid city south dakota for us. miguel, good morning. >> willie good morning. yeah that spring storm really delivering here. we've had about 6 to 12 inches of snow in the city. up in the mountains, they're looking at upwards of 2 feet of snow. it's been coming down here pretty steady blowing sideways for hours here for about the last 12 to 15 hours. the wind speeds have kicked up to about 20 miles an hour. we've had blizzard-like and whiteout conditions. now there's avalanche warnings in effect across many areas in this region. and this steady snow is going to expect to come down for the next several more hours all the way in through sunday afternoon. this is a fairly rare spring storm here. the folks out here used to cold and wicked weather. but this they say, is somewhat surprising. again we expect these whiteout conditions and avalanche conditions to persist throughout the day, hopefully tapering off later on today on mother's day. back to you guys. >> miguel that's a remarkable

image we're looking at of you on mother's day in a blizzard. thanks. >> we want to turn to dylan for more on what we can expect from those storms and elsewhere on this mother's day. >> mother nature like really coming in -- >> reminding us. >> a little bit too much attention she wants. we are going to see perhaps another 5 to 10 inches of snow in rapid city south dakota and we do have blizzard warnings still in effect. but the main threat today is for another round of severe storms. look at the band of rain that is approaching dallas. this is going to produce torrential downpours, gusty winds, perhaps as much as 60 miles per hour. there is a lot of vivid lightning. this is dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning approaching dallas. so obviously we are going to start to see some of those delays at dallas airport if they're not already in effect. we have severe thunderstorm warnings just to the north. now, today we're not looking at a widespread tornado outbreak but that does not mean we won't see tornadoes develop. especially in these two orange areas. that's our enhanced risk of seeing perhaps flash flooding

tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, dangerous lightning and also large hail. perhaps up to baseball size in diameter. now tomorrow it's going to push a little further to the east but we're still looking at the threat from the great lakes down to texas, into the gulf coast. that's also an area where we're going to see the potential for some dangerous storms. and finally it will start to fizzle out on tuesday. now we also have the tropical storm that's going to eventually make some rain in the mid-atlantic by tuesday. right now it still has 45-mile-per-hour winds. it made landfall in myrtle beach and north carolina is going to get the brunt of the rain with these heavier bands producing those torrential downpours. it does start to weaken as it moves over land and we'll start to see spotty showers in southern new england and the northeast. but either way we're still looking at rain and a lot of snow and so much activity all going on at once across the country. >> dylan as we looked at your maps there's hardly a region of the country untouched by this extreme weather. is that unusual for this time of year? >> it's very unusual to see massive snow and blizzard warnings and a tropical storm at

the same time. in my career i've never seen anything like that. >> wow. thanks dylan. now to a nuclear scare just 35 miles north of new york city. after a fire at the indian point nuclear power plant. the plant's operators insist the public never was in danger. but the plant has long been the center of controversy. nbc's ron allen is live outside the plant in buchanan, new york. ron, good morning. >> good morning, willie. yes, it's been very controversial because some 20 million people live within 50 miles of this plant. and word of a fire at a nuclear plant caused a lot of concern until it was clear exactly what had happened. now plant officials insist that this is a relatively minor incident. but it's rekindled the debate about whether indian point should be here at all. the first images of what happened showed black smoke rising above the indian point nuclear power plant. >> it was very thick when we first saw it. you could hear all the systems, and loud and clear saying that this is not a drill.

>> reporter: plant officials said an electrical transformer caught fire some 300 to 400 feet from one of the plant's reactors which automatically shut down by design. they called it an unusual event. the lowest of four emergency levels. >> there's really no concern because it's an electrical issue and a fire that was put out quickly. it's not on the nuclear side of the plant. >> i wonder if they're really doing everything that they could be doing to keep everybody safe. >> reporter: new york's governor a long time opponent of the plant because of its location near new york city and along the hudson river, said he wanted to see if emergency procedures worked. >> as i said this was a relatively minor situation. but when you're talking about a nuclear power plant there are no really minor situations. >> reporter: indian point, here since the '60s, supplies about 25% of the area's electricity. for years the focus of an intense battle with one reactor's license expired and another ending this year activists are determined to shut it down. >> it's very dangerous. and we don't know when the next

accident or how the next accident will happen. but it's very likely to happen. >> supporters of plant insist that it's safe and says replacing it with another source of power would cause pollution and electric bills to rise. overnight one big concern has been trying to remove foam material that was used to put out the fire and some oil that may have leaked out of one of the transformers. they want to stop that from running into the nearby waterways. the bottom line from plant managers is that the situation is safe and under control. >> that's the good news this morning. ron allen, thanks so much. >> exactly what you want to hear. let's turn to sheinelle with more on reports of islamic extremists now on the run in iraq. >> yeah. dozens of isis members have broken out of prison in iraq. isis militants claim to have attacked the prison north of baghdad with explosives to free 30 inmights friday. iraqi officials say the escape was organized from within the prison. prison walls. as many as 50 inmates and 12 police are reported dead. kim jong-un is upping the

stakes in u.s./north korean relations after announcing that his military test-fired a new ballistic missile. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker is live at the white house. kristen, good morning. >> sheinelle, good morning to you. the obama administration won't comment directly or confirm that north korea test-fired a ballistic missile but u.s. officials are warning north korea not to escalate tensions, which are already high. trying to flex its muscles, north korea released a series of photos which according to the reclusive country's state-run media shows leader kim jong-un marvelling at the successful test launch of a ballistic missile fired from a sush marine. while nbc news cannot independently confirm the test it's true it could mark significant progress for north korea's military capability. >> once it's operational they will be able to bring their submarines close to american shores and hit every state in the union. >> reporter: officials at the u.s. state department were quick to point out such a launch is a clear violation of multiple u.n.

security council resolutions, saying in a statement, we call on north korea to refrain from actions that further raise tensions in the region. it's the latest provocation by a dictator and country already heavily sanctioned by the west. experts say it could be an attempt to extract more aid from the u.s., and other nations. >> it's clear that the north koreans are going to up their demands, because their weapons now are so much more destructive than they have been in the past. >> reporter: experts also believe north korea could be trying to win concessions from the u.s. which has expressed interest in holding nuclear talks. it is possible given this latest provocation, the obama administration could consider more sanctions, but north korea has historically been defiant to threats from the west. sheinelle, back to you. >> thank you, kristen. a meeting at the vatican this morning between cuban president raul castro and pope francis. the latin america pope helped thaw relations between the u.s. and cuba. castro arrived at the vatican

for a private meeting with the pontiff. pope francis will visit cuba in september. a daring rescue aboard the queen mary ii 180 miles at sea. the coast guard raced from cape cod, massachusetts to the cruise ship after learning of a passenger in kidney and heart failure. the man was safely lifted to the chopper, and brought to a hospital near boston. on this mother's day, a young mom in california is thanking her 6-year-old daughter for saving her life. the little girl called 911 when we found her mother who is a diabetic lying unconscious. >> i told them that my mom froze. >> for mother's day i'm going to be pretty much cherishing her, you know. she saved my life. >> the fire department paramedics responded to the scene in hemet, california. they praised the little girl for being so calm and brave. and an update on a story we've been following, one of the formerly conjoined twins has been released from the hospital in houston. look at these new pictures. they show both little girls

good morning. i'm rosemary connors. happy mother's day. let's get a check of the forecast from meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, not looking great out there, but no major rain on the way? >> exactly. looks like yesterday will feel a lot like yesterday. it will be gray in the morning, that fog in place with the low clouds. we'll move that out to some sunshine later on this afternoon. we could see a shower or pop-up thunderstorm. but taking a look at areas of fog, we're seeing reduced visibility down to 3/4 of a mile in visibility. temperatures are very mild this morning in the upper 60s. some spots in the 70s. 70 right now in northeast philadelphia. 69 in reading. 67 in millville. as we go throughout the day here we'll see that temperature climbing to near 84 degrees later on this afternoon. monday even warmer 86. 88 on tuesday before we finally cool it down for the rest of the workweek. this morning, philadelphia police are investigating three shootings, three teenagers found shot and wounded in the area of south street. a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old

were shot in the legs, right on south street in the area of eighth and ninth streets around 1:15 this morning. they are both in stable condition in the hospital. while police were responding to that gunfire, there was another shooting a short distance away at ninth and bainbridge streets. a 19-year-old there was hit and is also in stable condition. detectives are now talking to a person of interest in the shootings, but that person is not a suspect. there's no word yet if these shootings are connected. we'll continue to bring you information during our 9:00 newscast. i'm rosemary connors. i'll see you then. now back to the "today" show sprp sprp sprp. have a good one.
