"nbc 10" is live on the scene looking to find out if anyone was hurt. a philadelphia family woke up to find an armed man in their home. parts of the area waking up to dense fog outside. look at that. this is a live look at foggy cape may. later today, showers could return. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's find out about the fog and showers to come with meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast. good morning, bill. >> good morning, tracy. low fog in philadelphia.

dense fog at the shore. there's a chance you'll need your umbrella, not this morning but this afternoon. radar, nothing to show you just yet. we will see some sunshine right through the afternoon but it's going to be hours before we see any sunshine break through. the temperatures have dropped into the 60ed and 70s. a very warm muggy start. 72 degrees in northeast philadelphia. the forecast is calling the fog to thin out. 72 degrees by 9:00 and 77 degrees at lunchtime today. as we go into the afternoon, we'll see that chance of showers. back with your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast. right now it's monday morning. find out how the commute is shaping up or precommute. jessica boyington in the first alert traffic center. >> good morning. driving the vine street expressway good news no crews on the scene at 24th street. we are still losing out the

right hand shoulder east or westbound. that's roadblock cages there. there's no crew actively on the scene. all crews getting by. 95 to 75 on the schuylkill expressway. 202, drive times are doing great. 10 minutes from 30 to the schuylkill and 11 minutes from the schuylkill up to 30. we take a look at the rest of our drive times as well. no problems 95 southbound 14 minute trip. the schuylkill doing fine heading into the center city area. check in on new jersey roads coming up in 10. breaking news in mercer county where an overnight fire hit an apartment house in east windsor. matt delucia is live on the scene. matt, what can you tell us? >> reporter: tracy, we got out here 15 20 minutes ago. we started getting video on the scene. this is the apartment that's affected by this fire. this is the winds sore castle apartments on devon sure drive

in east windsor. you can see the fire is mostly out at this point. you can see some of the water running down the window panes out here. very heavy fire out here within the past couple of hours. they even had the ladder trucks that are still up here spraying some water onto the roof of this two story structure. over here to the left you can see all of the manpower out here from the fire departments from east windsor and neighboring areas just to get this thing under control. it does appear at this point that it is mostly under control. right now, in fact, i can see some of the firefighters going inside the building doing another check. there's another firefighter going up on a ladder to the second floor of this building. he have' been talking with some of the neighbors out here who are witnessing this whole thing. one person gave me some cell phone video that we're working to get with you coming up at 4:30. you can see how much flame and how much smoke was out here when this fire initially started. the entire front of this

building was covered in flames. quite an intense scene. there were some initial reports of injuries. the neighbor i spoke with said he heard a woman screaming for help and that he also saw a firefighter taken away possibly with some minor injuries. we're still working to get more information, more confirmations out here. back again in 30 minutes with some new video and audio and new information out at the scene. matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." the time is 4:04. a family chases a would-be robber out of their northeast philadelphia home. police arrested the suspect as they say he got into the home on duncan street. he was armed with a weapon when the homeowners chased him out. no one was hurt. happening today, charges may be upgraded against the allentown mother who threw her son off the bridge the same day the coroner's officer is expected to release the autopsy

results. katy gregory is live with more. >> reporter: tracy, an incredibly sad story. the 1-year-old little boy died from injuries related from when his mother threw him over an allentown bridge. he had been in the hospital in critical condition after police pulled him from the river. according to investigators, his mother, 19-year-old johnesha perry pushed him over the stroller. took him out, kissed him, pushed him over the railing. he fell 50 feet to the water below. perry did jump in after. she was able to swim herself to shore. coming up we'll look at charges that perry is currently facing and how they will likely change now that her son has died. reporting live in allentown, katy zachry, "nbc 10 news..." the trial continues for six former federal officers. the defendants are accused of

stealing more than $400,000 during drug raids, also planting evidence and roughing up suspects. jurors have been reviewing testimony since thursday. today prosecutors will present more evidence in the murder trial against bucks county exterminator jason smith. he's accused of strangling a doctor in her home and then setting her body on fire. he confessed to strangling dr. ketunuti. the judge refused to throw out the confession. the bomb squad was called to an open field after someone found a grenade. it was found in lakewood. it turned out to be a dud. police aren't sure how it got there but they say it may have l'[ó been dug up by the excavating equipment. it was a weekend of wild

weather in the midwest. take a look at the tornado caught on video in iowa. the video shows the wind ripping the roof of a school in lake city. they were rushed to the basement to seek shelter before the tornado hit. emergency officials were out there last night but they say they can't really fully assess the damage until sunrise this morning. a tornado in south dakota injured nine people on sunday morning. the twister wiped out 2 dozen homes with winds reaching 130 miles an hour. >> took cover and seconds after we were down there the whole top end of the house flew off. >> surreal. absolutely surreal. you see pictures of it, you just don't ever think it's going to happen to you. >> the town is without power or water. all residents have been

evacuated as crews check out the damage and clear away debris. people in nepal are struggling to recover nearly 2 weeks after that deadly earthquake there. millions are without a home and others are in need of medical care. the quake killed more than 8,000 people and injured 16,000. today a group of volunteers from delaware is expected to return home after being in the quake zone. the delaware medical relief team has been in that country since last week. they tweeted pictures of their doctors treating people in need. "nbc 10" was in philadelphia as a second group prepared for their flight to nepal. they'll pick up where the first team left off. volunteers brought along food water, and medical supplies. a philadelphia man is also helping with relief efforts there. this is u.s. marine corporal jesus dislalopez.

he is a mechanic. he delivered supplies to nepal. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> muggy morning with clouds moving in and some areas of fog this morning. you see the low clouds over center city. no fog here as you can clearly see across the delaware. low cloudiness came down a little bit lower at the shore. that's where you'll find the thickest fog this morning. mean time it's clouds just clouds. no sign of showers yet. in the 60s and low 70s, unusually warm at this time of year for this hour. it's closer right now to our normal high temperatures this time of year. you can see some light fog in philadelphia looking at the the fog will thin out. the clouds are going to be hanging in there. as we go through the day there's a chance you'll see some showers and possibly some thunderstorms. that is weakening ana. it's filled with lots of moisture slowly churning. some of that moisture will be

coming our way. fog, really not happening for most areas north and west. just some light fog for coatsville, blue belt. no sign of fog in the pocono mountains and very light fog at philadelphia international. here's where you'll find the fog. 2 1/2 miles visibility. down to 1/2 mile in atlantic city. the fog will disappear. we'll see a chance of showers and thunderstorms. won't be an all day rainfall. look at the temperatures 85 today for allentown. up to 84 in reading and quaker town. 80s for doylestown, trenton and mount holly. some breaks of sunshine and possibility of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. the fog will ease. a pop-up shower is possible. most of the day dry for cape may and dover at 70s. dover, upper 70s while vineland warms to 82 degrees. into the 80s for philadelphia westchester, drexel hill, wilmington, swedesboro.

it is now 4:14. today the race for philadelphia mayor, democratic candidates will participate in a forum centered on the city's role in international issues. those candidates will attend a globally minded leadership mayoral forum this afternoon. it will take on topics like trade and tourism, immigration and maintaining philadelphia as a world class city. melissa murray bailey is the lone republican in the race.

former president jimmy carter returned home from a trip to the south american country of guyana because he was not feeling well. carter who is 90 visiting the country to observe its national elections which will be today. his staffers did stay behind to observe the vote. this is the 100th international election to be observed by the carter founder formed in 1992. cuban president raul castro said he is considering returning to the catholic church after meeting with the pope yesterday. pope francis will visit cuba in september before his u.s. trip and his stop here in philadelphia and "nbc 10 news" preparing for the pope you can count on us for updates as the papal visit gets closer. you can get alerts to your smart phone and tablet with the "nbc 10 news" app. happening today in alabama, a sentencing hearing is

scheduled to begin for a woman accused of killing her granddaughter by forcing her to run until she collapsed. a jury convicted joyce garrard on murder charges. prosecutors say she forced her 9-year-old granddaughter to run for at least three hours because she lied about eating candy bars. today in the boston marathon bombing trial defense attorneys are expected to call their last witnesses. they're expected to begin weighing their punishment. they have to decide whether he should spend the rest of his life in prison or be executed for his role in the bombings. today four suspects accused of killing two police officers in hattiesburg, mississippi, will make their first court appearance. officers beck min dean and la cory tate were shot late saturday night. marvin banks and jonie calloway are charged with capital murder.

banks brother is charged with accessories and cornelius clark is charged with obstruction of justice. >> here we are on mother's day. it's a tragedy for all america. it's a tragedy for our community. dean was named offerser of the year in 2012. tate graduated from the police academy last year and dreamed of being a police officer since he was a boy. they are the first hattiesburg officers to die in the line of duty in 40 years. prince held a rally on sunday. thousands of fans were dressed in gray as a tribute to freddie gray. he died last month from injuries he received while in police custody. during the concert prince debuted a song which he wrote called "baltimore" which addresses the unrest. at one point the singer called on them to help fix a brokinen and

divided city. >> i think he can bring hope to a community that has lost hope. i do believe by coming and purchasing tickets for a very well-deserving concert will bring back the hope to a community that was once lost. >> some of the proceeds from the show at royal farms arena will go to baltimore-based youth charities. well, still no arrests this morning in a knife point robbery involving a lehigh university student. the student was robbed on broadhead avenue early yesterday morning. bethlehem police say the thief got away with her cell phone and some cash. the student was not hurt. a philadelphia woman is recovering after firefighters saved her from the roof of her burning home. flames hit the house yesterday morning on gray's avenue in kingsessing. we talked to neighbors who described the scene. >> they heard somebody hollering. i opened my door because i seen the people from the church running over here. something's going on. when i opened my door that's when i seen the fire just

shooting out the windows, just shooting out. >> a man also escaped the fire. he was not seriously hurt. in bucks county a family managed to escape a house fire in bensalem. the nottingham fire department took that video early yesterday morning. no one was seriously hurt. officials are looking for what started that fire. tropical storm ana has been downgraded to a tropical depression. that happened last night losing strength after making landfall in the carolinas. this video shows the rough surf the rain and wind as ana came ashore in north carolina. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> almost 20 minutes after 4:00. we've got a muggy morning. low clouds and fog. this is the view from center city from the melon bank building. low cloudiness. you can see the top of the building completely obscured. 70 degrees in philadelphia. the normal high temperature this time of year is 72.

at this hour we should be in the 50s and falling. it's a very warm start. going to be back in the 80s this afternoon. there's the thicker fog at the shore. thick fog to start things off with. it won't be all day. it will take hours for the fog to clear. you'll need a temperature climb for that to happen. we will see that. it will start off warm and go even warmer. pottstown, wilmington wrightstown all at 68 degrees while low 70s in philadelphia. there you can see the low clouds that are with us this morning and fog at the shore. it will thin out and get some sunshine and then there's a chance we'll see some showers and possibly some thunderstorms. this time nothing to show you on the radar just yet. your hour-by-hour forecast showing as we go through the morning hours after some breaks of sunshine here come the showers, first at the shore. a pop-up shower here and there. a slight chance a thunderstorm. that's 2:00 this afternoon. mainly light showers during the

her young. the camden county police department helped moms cool off yesterday with some free ice cream from mr. softy. the department brought in the mr. softy truck so kids could treat their moms and the officers say it also helped the kids see the police as a positive part of the community. >> too many times police officers are seen only at negative times. this is a good time to get out here, talk to the kids share some ice cream and just have a good time. >> happy to turn out for ice cream. yesterday the mr. softy truck made its way to several parks around camp den. a cross-country move that could help ease the strain of california drought. next, the swap that means new business for our area. plus the way you get to work could be increasing your pant size. the route change that you could make to help slim down.

the time is 4:26. the virginia based good seed company recalled on friday packages of soy bean sprouts and mung bean sprouts because of possible listeria contamination. it was distributed in new jersey. starbucks is taking steps to ease the impact of the drought in california. the coffee chain said it will stop producing ethos water in california and move to pennsylvania. this move comes after some people in california voiced their concerns over the impact of bottle water plants on bottled water supplies on the drought. a newly released study shows the connection between daily weight loss and your weight.
