there are changes ahead for this weekend. it does include some showers and thunderstorms. a gentle breeze blowing live view from center city. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. pottstown, 45. 55 degrees right now in south philadelphia. we will see some sunshine today. a few scattered clouds and temperatures climbing into the low 70s by noontime today. and still climbing. closer look at the chance of weekend showers coming back in 10 minutes. a check of traffic with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> good morning, bill. we're still checking things out on 95 around state road through the work zone. the drive times are free and in the clear. 13 minutes headed southbound from wood haven road to the vine street expressway. no volume at all. no problems as well. 422, check out the drive times there. still free and in the clear as well. eastbound is generally where we jam up in the morning hours. route 29 and the schuylkill

expressway, 8 minute trip. amtrak suspended between philadelphia and new york city. modified between washington and philadelphia. moving onto the septa trenton line suspended as well. atlantic city rail starting with the outbound train to atlantic city at 433/537 in bound to philadelphia. tracy. breaking news overnight. we learned overnight that blew's legend bb king has passed away. the famed guitarist died in his sleep at his las vegas home at 12:40 a.m. our time. king sold millions of records and was inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame. the famed singer suffered from diabetes and was in declining health. he was 89 years old. 4:02. now to the deadly derailment in philadelphia.

we're looking at what went wrong. the last two rail cars are being trucked away from the scene. crews will take those cars down i-95 to amtrak to the yard in bear delaware. "nbc 10's" matt delucia has covered the crash from the start. he's live again at the steen in port richmond. matt, what's happening there now? >> reporter: very similar to what we saw yesterday. a lot more has been learned and a lot more has been done. in the distance behind the philadelphia police car that there is still a lot of activity out there. you see the lights over there by the tracks where this derailment happened and they're trying to get those tracks back in working order so that service can resume. now the ntsb yesterday spent the day looking closer at the trainee vent recorder also looking at the breaking system. there is good quality video

leading up to the point of derailment when the train tilts to the right and the train goes black. interviews of some of the passengers have been done. the engineer has agreed to be interviewed in the next couple of days. in the next half hour we'll have more on what investigators want to get from him. for now there are still plenty of questions. service is still suspended. the ntsb says there were no issues with the track signals. the site has been released back to amtrak. live in port richmond i'm matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." meantime, commuters from washington to new york are feeling the effects of the shutdown. mayhem in new york city. this video shows the crowds at penn station, the ripple effect this derailment is having up and down the northeast corridor. philadelphia's 30th street station passengers are dealing with delays and cancellations.

some people are telling us it's taking them an extra 4 or 5 hours to get where they're going. katy zachry is live in center city. when can commuters expect service to be fully restored? >> reporter: hi, tracy. according to the head of amtrak he said service to philadelphia and points south service could be restored as early as monday. until then take a look around 30th street station. the ripple effect continues. there are people who have been affected by what happened tuesday night. their travel plans delayed or even canceled. as we take a look at the derailment site you can see crews are making progress there. sky force 10 they were hauling in new sections of train tracks on thursday. they don't expect the stretch rail to be restored until monday. amtrak between boston and new york has been restored. trains are running on a modified

schedule due to crews needing to restore the power system near the crash site. i should actually say when i earlier saw you i said that service could be restored between philadelphia and new york, not d.c. that's the good news. as early as monday service on amtrak's northeast extension could be restored between philadelphia and new york city as early as monday. as a result of this septa transit line is down. coming up in the next hour i'll tell you what septa employees are doing starting at 5:30 this morning to minimize this. reporting live. katy zachry "nbc 10 news." now to the victims. here's casey touring the crash site on wednesday. just less than a half dozen victims remain at temple. six in critical condition with

more surgeries planned. the 20-year-old mid ship man will happen today. last night in brooklyn there was a vigil for another victim dr. derek griffith was dean of student affairs at medgar everett college. he was one of eight people who died. you see seven of them here as the eighth was an italian national visiting the united states on business. in the last 24 hours we have learned more about some of the victims. laura finemor texted her mom when she got on the plane. and bob gildersleeve. our coverage begins at 4:15. the first victim announces plans to file a lawsuit. it's 4:07.

a fire in gloucester county. they reported heavy flames and smoke on the second floor. medics treated one person on the scene for smoke inhalation. so far no word on what happened. the woman convicted of kidnapping and raping a 5-year-old girl will be convicted. christina regusters will be sentenced. a bethlehem coach is expected to turn himself into police today to face charges that he sexually assaulted a student. adam bednarik is facing statue tear ri sexual assault in an incident with a 15-year-old freedom high school student. he coached basketball and he worked as a teacher's aide.

he's been suspended without pay in february when they learned of the allegations. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 9 minutes after 4:00. beautiful 70s. another beautiful one shaping up this morning. a live view of citizens bank park. cool this morning. our skies seeing a few scattered clouds. this hour those clouds won't last all day. right now, 46 and in the clear in allentown, northeast philadelphia. 52 degrees and 50. just a little bit cooler at atlantic city. low humidity allows for a very clear start. there are high clouds that are moving into the area. this cloudiness will be moving too, during the morning. then you can see how it tapers off. we will get a good deal of sunshine today and back into the 70s. this weekend we'll be watching for the chance of some showers and possibly some thunderstorms

as it turns more summer like for both saturday and sunday. the hour by hour future weather shows those showers today will be in michigan but as we go into late tonight and early saturday look what happens. we have showers and possibly thunderstorms. this is 10:00 tonight. by early tomorrow morning we could see scattered showers rumble through with some lightning strikes overnight tonight. partly sunny for most of the day but there's still a possibility of some scattered showers. doesn't look too drastic at 2:00 in the afternoon. as we go into the afternoon hours there's more possibility of showers and thunderstorms popping up. you won't see them today. no a nice warmup from the 50s to 6:00 this morning to the 60s at 9:00 and by lunchtime 70 degrees. closer look at the weekend forecast when i come back in ten minutes. 10 after 4:00 right now. friday ride to work. let's check the roads. jessica boyington has that. >> thank you tracy.

we're out in new jersey this morning at the black horse pike. right around the black horse pike in the southbound lanes. only about 13 minutes for your drive time right there. through the work zone doesn't seem to be active right now. that's definitely a good thing. out on the pa turnpike the drive times are doing well. no problems westbound from 1 to valley forge. 23 minutes if you're headed eastbound. a check on mass transit the septa trenton line is still suspended. check "nbc 10" for more information and alternates. the atlantic city rail is being restored this morning starting with outbound 4608 at 4:33 a.m. is being restored. 11 minutes past 4:00. we are following breaking news for a missing marine helicopter in southeast asia. plus, free and clear. six narcotics officers acquitted along with the charges against

. it's 4:14. breaking news from overseas. nepal's army says a rescue helicopter has spotted the helicopter from kathmandu. the rescue team found three bodies near the crash site. 6 u.s. marines and 2 soldiers were on board in nepal when they disappeared to hen quake victims. the latest on the deadly derailment at home. crews are moving the last two rail cars from port richmond to an amtrak yard.

federal investigators say it's still not clear why the train actually sped up to more than 100 miles an hour before it derailed at the curve. eight people died in the crash. we want to take you through a time line of what we know about the train's speed leading up to the crash. the speed limit on the track is posted to 80. that limit slows to 50 in the curve. in the minute or so before the crash the amtrak train sped up to 106 miles an hour and that's when the engineer slammed on the brakes but obviously it was too late. meantime, an amtrak worker filed the first lawsuit connected to the crash. ruth phillips was in one of the rear cars of the train. the cynwyd law firm said he suffered trauma. the suit seeks damages in excess of $150,000. it says amtrak is to blame regardless of what the investigation reveals. >> we wanted to try to get this

in court as soon as possible so that not only we can get this matter resolved hopefully quickly, but so he can go on with his life as well. >> amtrak tells us they do not comment on pending litigation. we have new information on a 2013 commuter train crash in new york city. the engineer who fell asleep at the controls will not face charges. the metro-north derailment killed four people. the engineer dosed off because he suffered from an undiagnosed sleep disorder. new this morning, the american citizen killed in this week's attacks in afghanistan has ties in our area. paula cantore died in the after math of an attack on her hotel. she earned a bachelor of science from the wharton school. she was 46 years old. she had many years of experience in the issue of gender and

social response. a man faces sentencing for robbing and raping a woman. a jury convicted of rathique smith for attacking the woman he was walking with. it happened near septa's northeast station now known as jefferson station. smith and his victim tried to turn into the station. this morning, six philadelphia police officers are in the clear after being acquitted of corruption charges. yesterday a federal jury found the officers not guilty on all charges. the six were part of a narcotics undercover squad. the officers got hugs and congratulations outside the courthouse. they were accused of planting evidence roughing people up and lying to win convictions. they were suspended without pay. at least one of them says he'll try and get reincompetent stated. from our lehigh valley bureau, an eighth grader and her

boyfriend will go on murder for the dirl's mother. the judge ruled there was enough evidence to put 14-year-old jamie silvanic on trial for plotting the killing. she and caleb barnes are going to be on trial. the two allegedly conspired in text messages one from silvonek said i want her gone. the body was found in a shallow grave last march. silvonek's lawyer has said that she was coerced into the crime and she feared for her life. >> she's only 14. she was crying devastated, especially with some of the evidence that came in with pictures from the autopsy. >> jamie silvonek was tried as an adult but her lawyer says he'll try to get it moved.

the nominee for pennsylvania state police commissioner will not face charges for removing signs near his home. marcus brown took down the road signs that criticized him. the district attorney said there was no criminal intent. brown just didn't want his wife and children to see them. the prosecutor also says the signs were actually on abandoned property and in violation of a town ordinance. national police week culminates today with police officer memorial service. this morning president obama will speak at a ceremony on the lawn of the u.s. capitol. he will join thousands who honor fallen police officers. the president met with people at camp david yesterday. president obama spoke about the shared interest between the u.s. and the leaders in keeping the gulf region peaceful. at the summit they reaffirmed their commitment to defense and security fields. there were talks about the fight against isis and iran's nuclear deal. young people in our area got

to learn about the weather from some familiar faces yesterday. in fact 7,000 fans went to citizens bank park. they were making a lot of noise. for "nbc 10's" first alert weather education day. students teachers and principals joined all of "nbc 10's" meteorologists for an interactive lesson on how to make the forecast. they met phillies players, pilots inside storm force. it was a picture perfect day for it. bill henley how was that? will we have more great weather today? >> it was a spectacular event. huge turnout. 7,000 children there on hand to learn all about the weather, and the weather was spectacular. and to boot the phillies won. it was a great day all around. there are a few high clouds but you won't see any rainfall. much less wind this morning. 55 degrees philadelphia international. that's a little bit warmer than

from now to this weekend. the stotesbury cup regatta is going on this weekend. the rowing championship begins this morning, the stotesbury regatta. more than 6,000 students on the river. the plan for minimum wage has a backer. the plan to push it forward.

it's 4:25. the push to get to minimum wage got a boost in philadelphia.

if this is passed by voters, council and mayor nutter it's not binding. it only urges city and public officials to pass the minimum wage. it would gauge support of the pay increase. new jersey governor chris christie is defending his decision to scale back payments to the pension fund. he said the state can't afford to pay it. today thousands of students from villanova and wide ner will receive their diplomas from the 2015 commencement ceremonies. ceremonies last night. congratulations go out to the graduating class in manor college in jenkintown. josh shapiro delivered the
