everything from knives and clubs to guns. and this morning investigators say officers on the street have now been targeted by gang members. with 9 killed and 18 wounded in the gruesome lunchtime brawl, this morning 170 suspects all said to be members of rival motorcycle gangs are in jail. charged with engaging in organized crime. the vicious attack at this popular strip mall packed with police was so brazen some called the outlaws domestic terrorists. >> they may not be book smart, but these guys have their ph.d.s in violence and intimidation. >> reporter: jay dobbins who went undercover to infiltrate the angels. >> it's all about colors and how

they look and do you have permission to be there. it's a nasty vomit covered existence. >> reporter: which each suspect held on bond and more outlaws said to be on their way here. the banditos gang has the deepest roots in waco. it was a rumble with the cosacs. to the west the hells angels are notorious while the outlaws have a presence in the midwest and south as the pagans thrive in the east. the gangs can number in the thousands. >> like any criminal organization it's about money. it's about control. you probably haven't seen the end of it. >> reporter: in fact because police say their officers were involved in the shooting they say gang members are now targeting them out on the streets. as for the restaurant owner here he says despite what police have said he cooperated with officers and tried to prevent violence here.

he said he's held other luncheons here that were not violent. >> you're talking about 170 arrests. how are police handling that? >> reporter: yeah. the police had to originally take all of the suspects to the convention center. but they say they have plenty of room in their jals. they say anyone else here causing problems will be taken to jail. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. the state department said it will be early next year before it's ready to release e-mails mcstored on a private server. what is taking so long? kristen welker is in iowa where clinton is wrapping up a two-day campaign tour. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: willie good morning to you. hillary clinton will meet with business leaders here later on today. but you're right. it's coming as we're learning it could take the state department until january of 2016 to review and release e-mails saying it's

an incredibly labor intensive process. all of this is reigniting the controversy over her use of a private e-mail account while serving as secretary of state. hillary clinton is trying to get up close and personal with iowa's voters. >> i don't want this election to be about me. i want it to be about us. >> reporter: but this morning new criticism over lingering issues including her use of a personal e-mail account while serving as secretary of state. chris christie slammed her late monday. >> i think the server at home business is just absolutely incredible. that you would be secretary of state and be working off a private e-mail and then be deleting and destroying that stuff is incredible to me. >> reporter: this comes after clinton disclosed she and bill raked in $30 million over the past 16 months. mostly through paid speeches. gop rivals now pouncing on the huge payday are you satisfied that secretary clinton has been transparent enough when it comes to delivering speeches?

philadelphia. the fbi is now ruling out a theory that it was a bullet that struck the left side of the train's windshield. but the ntsb is still considering whether another projectile could have fractured it disorienting the engineer who was new to that route. >> why the train accelerated in the final minute before derailing remains the primary focus of the information. human error or mechanical failure? meanwhile amtrak released new safety upgrades. among them an automatic braking system and a new split along the curve where last week's crash took place. natalie has more stories including over in iraq. >> searching door to door after capturing the iraqi city of ramadi. authorities say some 500 civilians and soldiers have died in the killing rampage since friday. shiite militia men are preparing

suv slams into a red sedan leaving three people trapped inside. >> they were trapped in there. the windows were up. the doors were locked. >> reporter: what followed was even more shocking. after breaking the windshield with a fire extinguisher a man is seen carrying the driver of the red sedan to safety. john spirel lives nearby and captured the chaotic scene. >> that's the army guy steve. he's quite a hero. >> reporter: the hero offduty army captain who was on the way to the mall when he saw the crash. >> i took him to safety. while the officers tried to free the other on the other side. >> reporter: even while wearing a captain america shirt at the time. he says he doesn't want to be known as a hero. >> we are called to do whatever we have to do. today i was called to be at that spot at that time. >> we'll call him our captain america today. miraculously all three in the

crash suffered non-life threatening injuries. the driver of the suv is charged with traveling left of center. surveillance video captured the moments when a wind gust toppled a brick wall in china on sunday. and watch the right of your screen right now. the wall comes down without any warning. two people were killed and seven others injured. six of them are now in good condition. and proof this morning that you should never give up in life even when the wheels are coming off literally. this is a video from a rally car race in poland. at one point the car's steering wheel popped off right in the driver's hand. that's not going to do him any good. it took him a few seconds to figure out what to do next. but he kept cool under pressure. he manages to finish the race using only the metal hub of the wheel. it's genius. unknown what place they came in. but you could put them up there in first for moxie and

morning. let's turn to what's making headlines this morning. police in texas on alert in the wake of that deadly biker shootout at a restaurant in waco. officials say they've received threats from several motorcycle gangs and are concerned that more members could now be heading to the area. investigators looking into the large crack in the windshield of the amtrak train that derailed in philly determined that crack was not caused by a gunshot. the ntsb is working to see if something else may have been thrown at e the train. and new storms expected in texas today on the heels of this massive hailstorm. some the siess of tennis balls. it was so intense at one point it created almost whiteout-like conditions for drivers. but we begin this half hour with the murder mystery in the nation's capital. we've been following a family found dead inside their burning mansion. peter alexander has the latest clues in the investigation. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hey, willie. good morning to you. this morning with funerals now being planned for those four victims, sources tell our

washington station wrc that investigators believe more than one person was likely involved in the awful murders of the wealthy savopoulos family and their housekeeper. sources say it's likely the killers also had knowledge of the family how they lived their day-to-day lives. there was no sign of forced entry at the home. chilling new details of what investigators believe happened inside that washington, d.c. mansion. sources telling nbc station wrc savvas savopoulos his wife child, and housekeeper were kept overnight. this as we're now hearing from a second housekeeper who may having among the last people contacted by them. >> there was a very lovely family. very nice family. >> reporter: nelly who asked that her face not be shown said

mr. solve of louse left a voice message the night before the fire and to contact figueroa's husband. >> it said i hope you can get this message. my wife sick. my son is sick. and vera offered to stay overnight but her phone is dead. >> reporter: nelly didn't get the message until the next day. so at 9:30 thursday morning, nelly said figueroa's husband showed up at the house. his wife had never stayed overnight with the family before. nelly says the husband pounded on the doors even going to the back of the house. no one answered but then his phone rang. a call from mr. savopoulos apparently inside the house. >> and told him oh i forgot to call you last night but vera's okay. and he said well but i'm here in front of your house can i talk to me wife. he said oh she's not here.

>> reporter: minutes later, 9:57 a.m. nelly says she received a text from mrs. savopoulos. i'm making sure that you don't come to work today, it read. still unclear, the motive for the vicious crime. officials tell wrc that mr. savopoulos eventually gave the killers what they were looking for. the best clue this grain we surveillance video showing a person of interest who authorities believe may have driven off with the family's porsche later found torched. a manhunt and mystery casting a shadow over the nation's capital. investigators here in washington have already said at least three of the four victims appeared to have been beaten or stabbed before the fire. nbc news has not been able to reach mr. figueroa and police have not yet commented on the timeline. back to you. >> devastating story. peter alexander in d.c. thank you. we'll shift gears now and get a check of the weather from al. >> announcer: "today's" weather is brought to you by

there's matt on his way from eastern long island slogging through the rain this morning as he continues his red rose ride for charity. you know the music. that means it's rossen reports time. this morning vacation undercover. you may be tempted when you go on vacation to try parasailing. it looks beautiful. how safe are you when you go so high up? "today's" correspondent jeff rossen and his team went to find out. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. you go parasailing? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: and willie yes. big man on campus there. it is scary. but floating over the ocean looking beautiful. but now the ntsb calling it risky. only three states have regulations which means in most places you're on your own up there and the accidents are frightening caught on camera. we're going undercover checking out parasailing companies. one gets so dangerous even our veteran expert is panicked.

we're taking a ride. >> wow. this is so cool. >> reporter: our rossen reports producers josh and lindsey strapping in and soaring up. >> that is crazy. >> reporter: way up. look parasailing is fun. after all look at these views. but in an instant -- >> let go! >> reporter: -- it can get out of control. a gust of wind slams this 6-year-old boy into a hotel balcony. incredibly he survived. a cell phone camera rolling again when the rope on this parasail snaps in florida. two teenage girls hurling into the side of a building crash landing onto cars below. they were both critically injured. so our team is hitting the beach posing as tourists. in florida where there are regulations, great news.

we take several rides and all safety procedures are followed. >> wow. >> reporter: but in cancun where americans flock to parasail we spot trouble immediately. there are safety regulations here too, but on this boat no safety briefing whatsoever. >> we are parasailing and he didn't ask a thing. we are in the air right now. >> barely even spoke to us. >> i don't know if this is right. i don't know how high we're going. and i sure don't know what to do if there's an emergency. >> reporter: watching it all from the beach below, parasailing safety expert. >> if you're on the boat and they do not give you a safety briefing leave that boat right away. >> reporter: then mark notices another red flag. they're flying way too high. he says you should never get above 400 feet. too much wind and no one can hear you. >> let's see what they would do if we started screaming. >> hey! let us down!

>> hey, we want to come down! >> didn't hear us at all. >> reporter: when they land i had some questions for the operator. jeff rossen nbc news. did you give them a safety briefing? >> they didn't look nervous. >> reporter: but hang onto your harness. >> time to go. >> reporter: this next ride is the scariest of all. some of these harnesses have worn down frayed edges coming apart here. the operator says they don't use that one. but what happened next was about to scare everyone. >> look at how close we are to this hotel. you can't tell me if a gust of wind caught this right now it couldn't easily fling us into the side of that like all the videos we've seen. >> i mean we're practically over the beach right now. >> watching that right was the most frightening thing i've seen in my career. if the rope had broke or the engine stalled, they would have flown into the building. they could have died.

k-9 flu canine flu. now other parts of the country are on alert. kerry sanders has the story. >> reporter: dog lovers are on heightened alert as a dangerous flu virus could be threatening their pet. >> it spreads nose to nose. so i don't want her going and saying hello to a dog that looks like it's sneezing or drooly. >> reporter: a newly reported case of canine flu in under investigation in the atlanta area. they don't know if it's the same strain of flu that's killed eight dogs and sickened more than 1700 in the chicago area. test results are expected later this week. >> they will go more in depth about the strain of the flu that it is. but like any virus, it can potentially spread depending on what that dog or who that dog was exposed to. >> reporter: and concern is growing. another case of canine flu was recently confirmed near houston. the illness was also suspected in wisconsin, indiana, and ohio. >> it is an epidemic.

it's not, however, something people should panic about. we're not talking about thousands of dogs being brought to their knees. >> reporter: what can you do to prevent it? keep puppies and immune compromised dogs away from other dogs. if you suspect your dog has the flu, consult your vet. it is most contagious in the first four days of being infected. and humans can't get dog flu, but they can spread it. so wash your hands after petting a dog. for "today," kerry sanders, nbc news. a british historian has made what some are calling the literary discovery of the century. mark griffith believes this drawing could be the only authentic portrait of william shakespeare. he says it shows the living face of a 33-year-old shakespeare at the height of his popularity shortly before writing hamlet. fascinating. it's 8:05 now. over to savannah. >> i would have known him anywhere.

i have to say. when it comes to cancer screenings there have been a lot of questions over the years. a lot of things can be confusing. the changes depend on what your doctor says. in an attempt to clarify the guidelines there is an overall list of basic advice for five deadly cancers. dr. nancy azar is going to clear it up for us. >> very quickly, the group reviewed the literature from seven different medical societies. they evaluated the screening tests based on the available literature plus evidence for or against and they came up with what they call high value advice. can you get the most benefit with the least amount of harm. >> let's start with what this group recommends for breast cancer screening. >> big in the news is when do you start. age 40 or 50? they recommend starting every two years at the age of 50. now, the -- >> with the mammogram. >> with the mammogram. the question is what about the

women ages 40 to 49. if the woman requests it after discussing risks and benefits it can be performed every two years. but they're leeing it up to the patient to decide. >> and this is for the average person with no family history. >> all the cancers, it's with men and women with no previous abnormal screening tests and no family history. the average risk person. >> okay. what is this group recommending for the colonoscopy? >> from the age of 50 to 75. there's going to be a colonoscopy every ten years. another one is one that's less invasive every five years. and a few tests for fecal blood, that means blood in the stool. and some combinations therein. not everybody has to get a colonoscopy. >> could be a lesser step. okay. cervical cancer. what's the recommendation? >> this has been in the news lately. it's a recommendation for a pap smear from the ages of 21 to 30

every three years. after that you can do a combination of pap smear plus the hpv testing every five years or stick with every three years. stop testing after the age of 65. >> next we have prostate cancer. what is the recommendation? >> the prostate cancer is they are not recommending testing on anybody until they've had -- until the physician has had a one-time very thorough discussion with the patient about the potential harm or benefits of doing this test. again, it's kind of leaving a little bit of that you know voluntary testing up to the patient. they are not recommending it for routine screening for men and especially if the man hasn't specifically requested it. >> because there are complications with the test? >> remember the benefit of a screening test does it reduce morbidity from the test? they have not identified that. there are a lot of invasive procedures that could follow up an abnormal test that may not

extend life. >> and ovarian cancer. >> this one is not going to surprise any of us. there is no accepted screening test for ovarian cancer for women at average risk. >> what are we supposed to do? >> you really can't. there's no blood test. we don't recommend a trans transvaginal ultrasound. remember this is average risk individuals. more intensive screening is indicated for higher risk. there is no accepted screening test for ovarian cancer. >> all right. lots to sort out. we've actually put this information on our website today.com. you might want to check it out. coming up next we'll do "trending" and start practicing your crazy roars. a man showing the world what to do when a brown bear charges. and pedaling with a purpose. matt introduces us to one of the families inspiring this bike ride tour de red nose. but first these messages.

all along the way, people are saying ride matt ride. but the reason we are doing this is because there are so many children not only in this country but around the world living in poverty through not fault of their own. yesterday we met up with a young ladies named shanise patterson. she reminded us why we are riding. >> reporter: sunrise brings a bright new day for shanise patterson. but it didn't always seem that way. >> i got frustrated really angry. i would throw a fit get in t los of trouble. >> reporter: trouble found shanise almost from the day she was born. her parents were teenagers. questions of neglect brought the threat of being placed into foster care. that's when her grandmother stepped in. >> i love her. i had her since she was a baby. >> reporter: you won't hear beverly patterson sugar coat the situation. she doesn't have time. at 57 beverly is taking care of shanise and two other grandchildren.

shanise's cousins. all while working and going to school to get her associate's degree. >> she makes sure everything is always running smoothly. >> reporter: but feelings of parental abandonment fueled frustration inside shanise as she entered kindergarten. >> she struggled at the beginning. i think it comes from her parents not being there. >> i would yell and scream and tell people to leave me alone. i have anger issues. >> reporter: she's from new haven. the bloom fell off years ago. 45% of families in new haven country struggle to support themselves. and it has the highest violent crime rate in the state. but amidst the blight the boys and girls club stands like bedrock for the families and children. >> they don't have a lot of things to do in the neighborhood and the boys and girls club can't go wrong. >> reporter: the club has been here since '71.

she remembers when shanise came to the club at the age of 5. >> she kept to herself. she isolated. when she did open up it was in an angry outburst. >> reporter: the club got her into counseling. >> sometimes i put on a brave face. i can't stand when people see me cry. but then again, everybody cries. i'm only human. >> reporter: the club also gave her an outlet. she began to find herself in a dance program. each step learned, a step toward healing. a step forward. >> when i'm dancing, i forgot about everything else. it kind of makes me feel really good about myself. >> reporter: biking across connecticut, we found this small state has a lot of character. i rode all that way to see you. small with lots of character. just like shanise. she and her grandmother came out to cheer us on. somewhere along the ride i heard a rumor about you. that you like to dance a little bit. >> yes. >> reporter: is that true?

when did you start loving to dance? >> when i went to the boys and girls club i was about 5. >> reporter: yeah? what's your favorite kind of dance to do? >> hip hop. >> reporter: you think you're pretty good? >> yes. >> reporter: yes? we had one more surprise for shanise. we introduced an introduction to ballerina misty copeland. a star at the american ballet theater who once was a young girl who liked to dance at the boys and girls club. just like shanise. >> have you ever been to lincoln center before? >> no. >> what do you think? >> it's big. >> yeah. >> reporter: a trip to the ballet for a girl finding her footing in life. and it's for young ladies like shanise and kids like her not only in this country but around the world that we're riding on this trip from boston to new york. we have about 100 miles to go. some of it unfortunately in the rain. but we'll keep doing it. hopefully we'll arrive in the

brian grazer opens up about the conversations and questions that helped him create some of our favorite movies and tv shows over the years. here's nbc's joe fryer. >> reporter: it might be hard to imagine the man behind the smash tv show "empire" is the same guy who produced the drama "a beautiful mind" and the comedy series "arrested development." >> we're in trouble here michael. and i can't perform my magic. >> reporter: that man is brian grazer. a hollywood power player who thrives on variety. >> i want to have a different perspective on life. not just my own isolated perspective. the only way to have a different perspective is to enter the psyche of someone else. >> reporter: since the late '70s grazer has sought out some of the most powerful people. names as big as michael jackson, princess diana, and muhammad ali. meeting them in person peppering them with questions during what he called curiosity

conversation. why is curiosity so important to you? >> it's expanded my world view my life, the locations i've been in my life. >> reporter: now grazer has written is book "a curious mind: the secret to a bigger life." he says some conversations have even influenced his work. like the movie "8 mile" which was made after he met eminem. more recently he chatted with rapper kendrick lamar when his kids said this. >> my god. kendrick lamar. this guy is the bomb. meet him. then i did. and he surprised me in every possible way. >> reporter: how did he surprise you? >> first of all, his music is street ji and aggressive and smart. he's like a rapper poet. in person, he's pretty quiet and gentle. >> reporter: here's something you may find curious about grazer. he likes to leave behind heart-shaped photo frames with his picture. >> i leave them all over people's homes. and sometimes they're horribleyey offended by it and other times

same way we're looking at other things. that stigma still follows us. the more we can talk about it and the more access we can provide, the better mental health as we get older. >> to me it feels like you need to sit face-to-face to understand a problem. >> i think there's a benefit in some way. people don't have access. if i'm in the middle of the town write where i don't have that response. i can get it this way. we're missing a whole level of communication where i see your face and get tone of voice. i can't get that on text. so there's a lot of interpretation that might be wrong. >> okay. all right. so let's move here now. some things that could be lost in translation. i know when i text somebody not even with a problem, they don't get the joke the tone i'm using. does that concern you? >> definitely. we text a lot. but it takes a lot for me to understand where they're coming from. if they make a comment like i want to die today. are they serious? are they not? i have an established relationship with them.

i see their face i can interpret that. if it was someone i didn't know now what do i do? yan lot of these text therapy programs do provide some support and get them the access to support they need in the state that they're in but it's not as immediate. that makes me a little concerned. >> so much of what you do is built on trust with a patient. how do you build trust over text? >> it's hard. it's also a generational thing. we are not people who grew up only with text messages. the teenagers and younger people i work with will say of course when they're talking i say are we talking on the phone or text? it's often through text. so i think it gets there much more quickly. but we still aren't getting facial expression spops i'm not able to read that stuff. >> one of the benefits people have pointed to is it costs much less than visiting a doctor. >> it does. it's not covered by insurance. but it is a more affordable and acceptable means of treatment. >> okay. let's take one more look here. i want to give an example. we've removed names and context because we want to protect

privacy here. but he's a sample exchain. patient writing what do you mean by getting more support? do you mean having family help out more with children? no i meant having a supportive conversation at night or you feel admired or appreciated for the husband and father you are. >> this to me makes sense. this is probably something that someone could ask me in my office and an answer i would give. i don't know that this is so challenging in this moment. because i'm asking a pretty direct question and getting a pretty direct answer. but what if i said what do you mean about getting support, and the second was not in there? then as the therapist i have to give more information. i might say to the person in my office what do you think might be helpful to you and have them generate that. >> very interesting. thanks so much for your insight on this. for an in-depth look at what happened when we tried therapy by text head to today.com. up next more from our road warrior matt as he powers through the tour de red nose. but first this is "today" on

we're back with another update in about 25 minutes. you always find us on the nbc 10 app. it's a money maker. i mean, i just feel like our children are paying the price for these high stakes tests and their teachers are stressed out about it. so, teachers aren't benefiting. they're not getting information from these tests that are helpful for teaching. kids aren't benefiting because they don't even know what they got right or wrong. they just know that they feel really bad about it. parents aren't benefitting because i don't get any more information about my child. so the only people that could possibly be benefitting from this are corporations who are making the tests and selling the tests.

taking a look at the headlines when it comes to certain cancer screenings, the advice can be confusing. in an attempt to clarify the guidelines, they have released an overall list of basic advice for five different cancers. for example, women should get mammograms every other year from age 50 to 75. when it comes to colorectal cancer after the age of 50. men with sleeping problems may have an increased risk for mental health problems. they found an increased link

between sleep disorders and depression in men. they were likely to suffer depression. then when apnea, they were twice as likely to be depressed. more than half of college grads expect to be supported by their parents for up to two years after graduation. that's according to a new survey from youth promise. a yubt of sally mae. most said they'd be willing to pay rent if they could move back home. students and parents are a bit more accepting of the new normal these days. and in life when the wheels are coming off, improvise. this is video of a rally car race in poland. the steering wheel suddenly popped off in the driver's hands. he kept cool under pressure and finished the race using only the metal hub of the wheel. the team did not win, but they most certainly finished first in inventive thinking and moxie. there you have it. let's get a check of the weather
