we're celebrating two decades of "today" show summer concerts kicking off this season with pop superstar meghan trainor. that's why it's all about that bass today. friday may 22nd, 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on this friday morning. now it officially feels like summer. >> it does. we have our concert. speaking of all about that bass how you feeling from your ride? >> you leave my bass out of it. i feel good. good to be back. we've got a big story to start with this morning. that is this morning a suspect is in custody in that murder mystery in the nation's capital. the manhunt came to an end exactly a week after the bodies of a businessman, his wife son,

and their housekeeper were discovered inside a burning home. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has more on this. what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt good morning. those dramatic developments taking place overnight. now in police custody here in washington, d.c. daron dylan wint police picking him up after a manhunt. and police picking up two vehicles. one wint was in and a separate box truck they found $10,000 cash inside. this morning the massive manhunt for first degree murder suspect daron dylan wint is over. police taking wint into custody overnight in this northeast washington neighborhood. law enforcement sources tell our station wrc that they followed a white chevy cruze. officers pulling over the chevy arresting wint without incident. wrc reports three unidentified

women were also in the car with wint. overnight investigators were combing through the chevy and this truck nearby. wint's search took them from brooklyn to new york where they believe he traveled before returning to d.c. wint tracks him using a phone found in his girlfriend's possession when police interviewed her thursday. she told them wint was returning to d.c. where they used separate phone records to track him down. the question remains this morning did wint target the savopoulos family? police say he once worked for savvas savopoulos' business american iron works. and one of wint's relatives were fired from the company. do you feel that wint was acting alone? >> we have not ruled out others could be involved.

>> reporter: in 2010 according to police records, wint himself was arrested outside of american iron works after he was carrying a machete but charges were dropd. he was also charged with assault three times found guilty in one of the cases. and had three unrelated separate orders against him. >> i can't believe that he did it and i met him many, many times. i do not think he's the one. >> reporter: that former attorney of wint's telling us that he said wint would not hurt a fly saying specifically he's the kind of guy you wouldn't mind your grandmother having lunch with. this morning wint is in custody accused of first degree murder. matt he's likely to make his first appearance in court later this afternoon. >> all right. peter, thank you very much. clint van zandt is a former fbi profiler. good morning to you. >> hi matt. good morning. >> hat's off to the police on this. >> absolutely. >> you think of the

circumstances here. the crimes this guy is accused of committing. the fact he had to be considered extremely dangerous. he knew he'd been identified so that cliche he had nothing to lose they did this quickly. >> they had to matt. this guy's history goes back as peter was just telling us he's got an extensive criminal history. this is the same person who his attorneys said he wouldn't hurt a fly. he threatened to kill to shoot his parents. he told a woman that he would stab her to death and her young child saying i know how to use a knife very well. i'm not afraid of the police. so this is someone law enforcement had to get in custody as quick as they could. now the question is is there a second or even a third person involved? >> and other than interrogating this suspect, how are police going about trying to figure that out? >> well you know one of the great things in this case was the dna. we've all heard it was dna from the pizza crust. but if you think of that crime

scene, matt you've got four dead bodies in there, a fire going on fire department pouring water in there and yet some good detective, atf agent was able to go in find that pizza box and say look, two pizzas. this guy probably didn't buy pizza for the people that he's torturing. he got it for himself. so they were able to find the dna. perhaps they have dna of a second suspect, they just have no match it. >> and again we're looking now at something that does not appear to be totally random because of this suspect's history with this family and the company owned by this family. >> exactly. exactly. we've got a history here of why he would have targeted this specific house and neighborhood. i think the people in the vicinity has to take solace there's no one on the street like this still. but as the police suggested

there still may be accomplices out there. this would have been a hard crime for one person to pull off. there may be more to come. >> thanks again. credit to the police for bringing this man in. clint, thank you very much. meantime weather is the big story down south. historic rains leading to major flooding in texas and oklahoma. al we've been talking about this all week. >> and it's going to go right through memorial day weekend, unfortunately. look at some of this video that's come in from corpus christi, texas. some areas in corpus christi picking up 6 inches of rain in a short period of time like several hours. i-37 was shut down for awhile. cars literally floating by the power of this water. and there is more on the way, unfortunately. some guys of course take advantage of it. a paddle boat and a beer president not bad. as you look right now, we've got at ft. smith 14.9 inches of rain. dallas, 6.9 inches.

corpus christi 12.7 inches for the month of may and it is not done just yet. of course we'll continue to track this. but we've got more heavy rain for memorial day weekend. other parts of the country not looking so bad. >> thank you very much. we'll get to your local forecast and your holiday forecast in just a couple of minutes. first, though dylan is high above philadelphia. she's keeping an eye on some of the 37 million americans expected to do some traveling this weekend. which by the way is apparently a ten-year high. how's it looking? >> hey, matt. it's looking good from up here. this is the way to beat the holiday traffic. get yourself a helicopter. if you are one of the millions of people traveling this weekend, brace yourself because it is going to be extremely busy. we are up above i-95 the heavily traveled corridor here thanks to our nbc station wcau for sending us up in their chopper for this view. we are going to see a lot of this this weekend with 33 million people expected to hit the roads.

the reason for the increase is because of the decrease in gas prices. they're averaging around $2.66 a gallon. that is a full dollar cheaper than this time last year. you can also blame the harsh winter. a lot of people are just ready to get their summers started. if you're flying you'll join 2.6 million people at the airport. that's up 2.5% since last year. if you look at the flight aware, flights are going now. this is going to be a busy map. you'll want to check this website to make sure there are no flights or cancellations to affect you. if you can't get a helicopter i recommend downloading a great play list be patient on the roads, and download a good traffic app to give yourself some sanity as you try to enjoy this memorial day weekend. >> thank you very much. by the way, my much maligned play list from my bike ride is available. >> a lot of old man music. >> put that on today.com, the orange room. enjoy it as well.

its ban on gay troupe leaders. pete williams has been following the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the message is a blunt one. if the boy scouts don't change the policy on gay scout leaders themselves on their own terms, it'll be forced on them in a way they won't like. >> the battle of the boy scouts -- >> reporter: after a bruising battle two years ago led to ending the ban on admitting young gay people to the scouts robert gates, the former defense secretary who's president of the boy scouts says the organization must now accept that public attitudes are changing even more quickly. he says the current policy that still bans gay scout leaders will not survive. >> we must deal with the world as it is. not as we might wish it would be. the status quo in our movement's membership standard cannot be sustained. >> reporter: the greater new york council is already defying the ban. just last month hiring an openly gay eagle scout to be a summer

camp leader. 15 years ago the supreme court upheld the scouts' right to exclude james dale when he came out as gay. now gates says the scouts might lose a similar case and james dale agrees. >> even if you don't exclude a young person when they become 18 years old they're not good enough anymore? that's the wrong message for the boy scouts of america. >> reporter: he says they should respect the thoughts of local churches. he oversaw the policy change on gays in the military when he was secretary of defense and that experience impresses some local scouting officials. >> this is not what we expected but leaders lead. bob gates is used to leading. this is not a guy used to sitting on the back of the seat and rubbing his hands and wondering what to do next. >> reporter: such a big change would have to be approved by a vote of the scout leadership. the mormon church says it will

carefully consider how such a change would affect its century-long association with the scouts. >> pete williams thank you very much. natalie's joining us now with more on the oil spill out in california. >> yeah. not good news because officials are now saying it could take months to determine what caused that huge oil spill in southern california. nbc ease hallie jackson has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. today, guys the size of this cleanup will nearly double with 300 more responders arriving to help. but the big question is still out there. how did this spill happen in the first place? this morning unanswered questions about what caused this pipeline to break. >> they will take that piece of pipe. they will have it inspected by a third party. let the engineers determine. that could take weeks and months to get that information back. >> reporter: plains all american says it inspects the pipe every three years. above and beyond what the federal government requires.

the company now on the hook for cleanup costs. >> where oil is spilled, a company will have to pay money for the recovery of that oil regardless of whether they took good care of the pipeline or not. >> reporter: so far crews have recovered about 10,000 gallons of oily water. right now we've got five to six foot swells 20 mile-an-hour winds. you can feel it on this boat rocking back and forth. 17 boats are working to corral the oil slick with more booms arriving today. high above, nbc's miguel almaguer puts it in perspective. >> environmentalists say the true impact on not just the environment but animals will take several days if not weeks. >> reporter: today we'll get our first look at the six pelicans rescues and responders also found an oiled sea lion who will be treated at seaworld. >> how did you get him into the crate? >> he actually walked right in. >> reporter: rescuers are bracing for more. knowing it could be days before they see the true scope of this spill.

"nbc 10" breaking news. we are following breaking news. a house fire in camden. the fire started just before 6:00 this morning at kaighn and rose in camden. it damaged two homes. it is still out of control. one firefighter suffered a minor leg injury. you can see the wall of smoke from the ground. a grand jury in baltimore has now indicted all six officers originally charged in connection with the death of freddie gray. they will remain free on bail ahead of their arraignments on july 2nd. down south, heavy rains causing major flooding. rescue crews called in to rescue drivers from stalled and submerged cars. more rain on the way for that region. we begin this half hour with a story that shocked a lot of people. one of the families that is well known in this country, the duggars, stars of "19 kids and counting." erica, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the duggars' oldest son josh is apologizing after reports he was once on child molestation claims. the headlines are shocking.

josh duggar accused of child molestation. in response the now 27-year-old father of three issued a statement which reads in part 12 years ago as a young teenager i acted inexcusebly for which i am extremely sorry and deeply regret. i hurt others including my family and close friends. the incident occurred in 2002 just before the family began filming its first tv special "14 children and pregnant again". >> 14 children is unusual. >> reporter: police records obtained by in touch magazine which were destroyed thursday by request by a court shows josh duggar was repeatedly accused of molesting five underage girls. while the victims were quote, sleeping. apparently they were sleeping in a common room at this time. those same records also state josh's father knew about the incident but waited more than a year before contacting

authorities. nbc reached out to both josh and jim bob but neither responded to our request for comment. in a separate statement posted on their facebook page jim bob and michelle duggar called this one of the most difficult time of our lives and went on to say he made some very bad mistakes and we were shocked. the investigation was open in 2006 after a caller contacted producers from the oprah winfrey show. which in turn contacted the department of human services. i sat down with the duggars earlier this month before any of these allegations were made public. that interview was for a special that aired tuesday on tlc. >> we do plan to stick -- >> reporter: josh's wife anna who is pregnant with the couple's fourth child said he shared his past mistakes two years before they became engaged. tlc did not respond to a request for comment. there's no word on whether they

knew about these allegations prior to this week. josh duggar resigned from his position with the family research council on thursday. a conservative christian lobbying group. its president released a statement saying the incidents were previously unknown to the group and that this is the best decision for josh and his family at this time. duggar is not eligible for criminal charges because the statute of limitations have passed on the events in question. >> but is it true that the family the parents knew about these allegations and waited a long period of time? >> that they weren't reported. that's one of the questions that we had and were hoping to get answered. again, our questions for comment to both the family and josh have not been answered. >> so many that follow this family will be surprised to hear this. mr. roker gives us another check of the weather. >> of course we're entering the first unofficial weekend of summer and it's feeling more like winter for a lot of folks. got a big upper level low

good morning. i'm chris cato at 8:56. a great start weather wise to the holiday weekend. here's bill henley with the first alert forecast. >> got to love this for you. lots of sunshine but we're seeing wind pick up too. and that's going to stay with us through this afternoon. in fact, get stronger. so temperatures will be climbing into the 70s. but it is going to be a breezy one.

winds are now steady at 16 miles an hour in wilmington. and they're gusting to more than 20 miles an hour in the area. but the temperatures are now warming up. 61 degrees in philadelphia trenton, wilmington, up to 60 degrees, and 61 in allentown. well investigators, are looking for the cause of the building fire in camden. brought this to you as breaking news this morning. it broke out at cane avenue just around 6:00 this morning. it's under control now. one firefighter did have a minor injury when his foot went through a hole in the floor. we spoke with the fire chief. the fire house was actually about a block and a half from the scene there. and we've learned in talking with the chief that squatters lived inside the building. they ran from the scene. and some people escaped from the home next door when that fire spread. well memorial day weekend is here. the holiday set aside to honor americans who died in service has become vital to the nation's economy. especially in places like the jersey shore. atlantic city's mayor will perform the annual unlocking of the ocean ceremony.

there are eight casinos in a.c. now. last year at this time there were 11. city officials say they're trying to bring in nongaming attractions. memorial day weekend is a time when businesses will try to gauge how the upcoming summer season will go. and wherever you go this weekend, take the first alert weather team with you. we'll update the forecast around the clock and push out new information through the nbc 10 app, which you can access through your smartphone or tablet. we'll have another update for you in about 25 minutes. i'm chris cato. have a great friday.

taking a look at the headlines, the president of the boy scouts of america says the organization should end its ban on gay adult leaders. robert gates says public opinion has shifted rapidly and he warned that if the group doesn't alter its policy change will be forced on it from the outside. he recommended letting local scout troupes decide for themselves. the ban on gay young people becoming scouts ended two years ago. you're not supposed to text behind the wheel of a car, but what about an airplane. the faa is unveiling a new system that would have pilots communicating with air traffic controllers via text message. this will only happen when the planes are on the ground and the faa says the new system will save you up to eight minutes at takeoff, cut overall delays and

64 now in wilmington and trenton. northeast philadelphia has updated. now 65 degrees and climbing. we'll see lots of sunshine at 11:00. by 2:00 just a few scattered clouds. a few more clouds later this afternoon. well, if traffic is barely moving on 295, then this is why. a cow on the highway. this is on the i-295 off ramp in hamilton township mercer county. a viewer sent this video a short time ago. police have been trying to corral the cow and get her off the road. we understand they have managed to hit her with a tranquilizer dart. we'll follow up and find out what happened. and investigators in camden are looking for the cause of this building fire. here's the view earlier from sky force 10. the fire broke out at cane avenue and rose street just before 6:00 this morning. they had it under control a few hours later. one firefighter did have a minor leg injury. now, the fire was half a block from the fire house. that helped with the response. we've learned the squatters living inside that building ran
