she spun a web of lies, of deceit of manipulation. in this case now she is paying "nbc 10 news" starts now. new from overnight, swept away. raging flood waters killed at least three people in texas and oklahoma, including a firefighter who was trying to save others. here at home preparations are well underway for memorial day ceremonies and parades across the area as we honor the americans who fought and died protecting our freedom. and many of you will be celebrating that freedom outdoors today. you need to get ready for some holiday heat. a warmup in store for parts of the area. we'll tell you what to expect no matter where you're spending your memorial day holiday. this is "nbc 10 news" on this memorial day holiday. i'm chris cato.

let's begin with meteorologist bill henley. nice pleasant start out there. >> right on through today. currently -- wilmington and allentown is 59 degrees. a pleasant start. it's going to be a warm day. sunshine a few clouds. 63 at 6:00. by 9:00 72. 81 degrees at noontime. go through it neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in 10. right now let's check in with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. what's going on jessica? >> we have a quiet morning so far. out on 295 in new jersey to check out the drive times there. you can see no active work zone around the black horse pike. that's definitely a good thing. not a lot of volume. still free and in the clear no problems 13 minutes headed

southbound from 38 up to this point around the black horse pike. as we head out through the p.a. turnpike check out the drive times, currently no problems. westbound, eastbound, still 23 minutes. certainly not a quiet night in terms of violence overnight. gun violence in philadelphia and camden has police investigating a total of four shootings, two of those deadly. in philadelphia's mantua neighborhood, a man died after being shot in the head. police found him near a basketball court at 41st and athens street. they're still searching for the shooter. a few minutes earlier a man was shot at 17 and luzerne. medics rushed a man to the hospital and he died. philadelphia police are looking for whoever shot a man in the leg inside an apartment in the parkwood neighborhood. it happened late last night.

no motive on that shooting. the fourth shooting happened in camden. investigators say someone shot a male in the upper body at sheridan and norris street. they're not telling us the victim's age at this time and no word yet on the condition of the victim or the motive. also new from overnight, look at this photo. investigators are trying to determine the cause of this fire montgomery county. this was on norristown road in horsham. firefighters contained a fire on blue mountain. it was on blue mountain drive in moore. campers didn't put out a fire and it spread. four firefighters had minor injuries. new from overnight as well a firefighter actually died

while trying to rescue people from fast-moving flood waters in oklahoma following a weekend of record rainfall there. "nbc 10's" rosemary connors is live in the digital operations center. rosemary, this news about that firefighter hitting that community hard in oklahoma. >> just devastating, chris. the chief says this is the first time he has lost anybody in the line of duty. the veteran firefighter who was a captain was one month shy of his 20th anniversary with the department. captain jason farley is being haled a hero this morning. he was out on a call late saturday night to sunday. the fast-moving water swept farley into a storm drain and he drowned. members of the fire department say that during this difficult time they are witnessing the community come together. >> it's very nice to see. we hope that everybody knows that our first priority is for

the community. >> farley was one of two people killed in the flooding in oklahoma over the weekend. on saturday a woman in tulsa died after her car hydroplaned. in central texas, residents there saw record-setting rainfall over the past few days. one person is dead in texas because of the flash flooding. meantime, eight people including two children are missing and about 400 homes have washed away in haze county. one river in that area rose 30 feet in just three hours. the storms have forced hundreds between oklahoma and texas to evacuate. unfortunately, more bad weather is on the way. reporting live in the digital operations center, i'm rosemary connors, "nbc 10 news.." 4:05 on this memorial day. today is the day we honor the men and women who gave their lives in the defense of this country. 3:00 this afternoon is a national moment of remembrance. citizens are also asked to fly

their flags at home at half staff. president obama will place a wreath at the tom of the unknown at arlington national cemetery today. immediately after that the national defense will host an event at the national amphitheater. many others have died in the line of duty. philadelphia mayor michael nutter will mark memorial day at the korean war memorial in old city. and a former prisoner of war is speaking at a special rededication ceremony. ralph galatti will be the speaker at the vietnam veterans war memorial at penn's landing. and if you're looking for yet another way to honor our fallen heroes on this memorial day, there are plenty of parades in this area. on the longest running memorial day parade. >> reporter: that's right. this parade dates back to 1946. there are preparations along the parade route behind me. they've been getting ready for it for months. the parade begins at the base of the betsy ross bridge. all of the events that were part of it last year and the people that come out, it winds down several major streets. thousands of people line the route. the parade focuses a string band, high school marching band dancing brigade and more. in fact we talked to a father whose three children are taking part in the parade this year. coming up at 4:30 you'll hear why it's so special for people to be part of the bridesburg memorial day parade. reporting live katy zachry

"nbc 10 news." as always the jersey shore is packed with beach goers and boardwalkers. "nbc 10's" matt delucia is in mongdon. he joins us live at ocean city. matt, day three getting started and you've talked to a lot of those folks, right? >> reporter: that's right. memorial day weekend. this is the day. memorial day. this is the day that we honor all of our fallen heroes. out here at the jersey shore, this is where people come for a little bit of vacation trying to get their summer started. you see on the boardwalk, very quiet. not a soul out here right now. take a look at video. a lot of people outside on the boardwalk, on the beach. the ocean still a little too cold for a lot of folks. we have seen people hanging out at the beach for the unofficial beginning of summer. a lot of people i spoke with on

"nbc 10's" first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington watching the cars on the route this morning. jessica? >> thanks chris. yeah we're on the vine street expressway. first to start right around 24th street and westbound, eastbound no problems. headed towards the schuylkill expressway, back there the westbound lanes are headed towards the schuylkill. a 2-minute trip. either direction you are fine and not a lot of volume. as we head out the door all pretty much free and clear. no problems heading into the center city on the schuylkill as well. blue route towards 95 a 16-minute trip there. as we head out to mass transit, no problems for amtrak, new jersey transit or septa. we'll check in with the area bridges coming up. a blast and a careful search. the discovery inside a car on the national mall that brought out the bomb squad.

4:14 now. we have new information about a security scare near the u.s. capitol building in washington, d.c. police arrested a man after they say he left his car unattended with a pressure cooker inside of it. officers noted that device and smelled gasoline. they called in the bomb squad. pressure cookers are sometimes used to build homemade bombs. they're not sure that's what took place here. this happened blocks away from a

memorial day concert. the virginia man who owns that car is facing charges. the nobel prize winner died in a car crash along with his wife over the weekend. princeton university professor john nash and his wife alicia were killed on the new jersey turnpike on saturday. it happened in monroe township. police say the couple were in a taxi when the cab driver lost control, hit a guardrail and slammed into another car. "nbc 10's" doug shimell talked to friends and neighbors in princeton about the legacy nash leaves behind. >> reporter: john nash's colleague says his flight arrived so early that instead of waiting for his limo he took a cab. police guarded the unassuming house that belonged to the unassuming man who won the nobel prize in math. >> he was just very sweet and quiet and you'd never know he

was someone of such importance. >> talked to many peoples. >> john nash's game theory, the use of advanced mathematics, was called one of the great ideas of the 20th century. >> find a truly original idea it is the only way i will ever distinguish myself. >> russell crow portrayed nash and his struggles with schizophrenia "a beautiful mind" so it was a shock when his friends heard of the accident. >> i couldn't believe it. >> dr. louis newer renberg just flew back to the united states after the two received an award in norway. >> we were sitting for over an hour chatting taking a cab. >> police say that cab lost control on the new jersey turnpike killing the 86-year-old nash and his wife alicia. there were flowers and tributes laid in front of princeton university's math building. his colleagues wishing they had gotten to know that quiet man

they saw in the hall. >> i was extremely shocked. i saw the guy. i missed an opportunity. i should have talked to him more. >> reporter: princeton university says they should be releasing details of a formal tribute for john nash in the coming days. i'm doug shimell, "nbc 10 news." a judge in cleveland is holding a rare holiday arraignment today for protesters arrested after the acquittal of patrolman michael brella. height was charged and there was an angry protest which resulted in 71 arrests. the court is usually closed on memorial day. in new jersey police in one gloucester county town are offering free coffee to the community as a way to help bridge the divide. the pittman police department is holding coffee with a cop at the wawa on woodbury road at 9:00.

this is an effort to build a stronger bond with the community. police in camden county investigating a possible abduction. they've already found the victim. now they're trying to figure out what happened. yesterday officers got a call about a man being forced into the trunk of a car at 3rd and kaighn street. the victim was found an hour later but they haven't said where. police released a picture of a silver acura believed to be involved. it has a new jersey plate with the number you see on the screen. they're asking anyone who recognizes this car to give them a call. wilmington police are looking for a driver who ran over another driver after a dispute. the victim was not seriously hurt thankfully. police say there was some type of accident on route 13 in wilmington. one driver started following another. the driver got off the highway, they confronted each other and that's when police say one of them ran over the other one.

investigators say the suspect was driving a dark colored dodge truck with a maryland license played. rutgers football coach said they're waiting before they take any action. darian daily is charged with armed robbery. he used a gun to rob a person riding a bike in sarasota. another man is charged in the incident. both players have been home on break, the rutgers players have since the break. they're scheduled to return to campus tomorrow. montgomery county is crediting a carbon monoxide detector for saving several people's lives. a neighbor's house had a carbon monoxide detector alerted her to the danger. someone was using a generator

and that's what cause the the leak. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with bill henley. >> coming up on 4:20. we're in the 60s right now. no breeze just yet. that's going to change. the flag is going to get a workout on this memorial day. 65 degrees at philadelphia international. southerly wind at 6 miles an hour. and it's dry in the pocono mountains. there are some clouds moving through the poconos right now but most of the area is going to stay completely dry to the next couple days. then that changes. northern philadelphia into interior new jersey. that changes with pretty good wind during the day. in fact by 10:00 this morning, the future winds showing 24-mile-an-hour winds and stronger gusts possible later today. we will see sunshine. southerly wind helping to warm things up. 6:00 this evening we'll be drawing very warm conditions but the humidity stays low today. any showers are way to the north

and west northwestern pennsylvania but the chance of showers is going to get closer over the next couple of days. by tuesday afternoon central pennsylvania will see some showers. that's 5:00 tuesday afternoon. we'll see sunshine and you'll feel the humidity tomorrow. then come wednesday those showers will be inching closer into the afternoon and evening hours. not so much in the morning, but wednesday afternoon we could see some showers and possibly some thunderstorms off to the north and west. there are some changes ahead. today we'll see lots of sunshine and it's going to be a breezy one, too. we'll start off in the 70ed and warm well into the 80s this afternoon. full seven day forecast when i come back in the next half hour. bill we'll look forward to that. we want to pass along a warning for drivers in camden county. the haddon avenue bridge is closed for emergency repairs because of a sinkhole. it's not clear how long these repairs will take to complete.

she is survived by her husband, her son, actor ben stiller, a daughter and several 2k3wr57bd children. she was 85. new research suggests that higher altitudes may actually boost a baby's risk of sudden infant death syndrome or sids. researchers found the rates doubled there. the number of deaths is very small and they cannot make a direct link between elevation and higher risk of sids. for now parents should just focus on the known risk for sids, no stomach sleeping or bed sharing, avoid soft bedding and pillows and keep infants away from smoke. there is a new push for moms to breast feed. now your "nbc 10" first
