"nbc 10" breaking news. this breaking news overnight in switzerland where secret raids led to the arrest of some of the world's most powerful soccer officials. this morning a scandal is erupting for fifa, million bribes. here this morning, get ready for a steamy and stormy day. first alert radar tracking potentially dangerous weather. this is "nbc 10 news" this day on wednesday. i'm chris cato. we have a first alert as "nbc 10" prepares you for today's tletd of possibly severe thunderstorms this afternoon. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and the forecast. off to 71 degrees. >> and steamier. the higher humidity will help

fuel showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. outside right now you can see the southerly wind. it keeps bringing in that humid air. we're in the low 70s. the area is running 5 to 10 degrees warmer. i've issued a first alert this afternoon for the potential for severe storms in our area. damaging winds, heavy downpours are a possibility for the afternoon. we're watching the showers in western pennsylvania. they haven't fired up just yet but as they moved into our area they're going to be moving into a much warmer air mass this afternoon. we'll likely see strong storm development. temperatures, 71 degrees in philadelphia. 69 in trenton and 71 degrees in wilmington. we will see sunshine before the storms move in. clouds. look at the temperature warmup. by 9:00, 76 degrees. into the 80s waiting for showers at noontime. we'll go through the future weather hour by hour to show you when the storms will move into

your area. first, let's get to traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> right around 24th street you can see drive times still under 5 minutes. headed westbound into the schuylkill expressway, currently no problems doing so. speaking of the schuylkill expressway eastbound through the vine street expressway a 15 minute trip. the blue route southbound looking good so far. out in berlin new jersey we are dealing with a sinkhole that's closing the westbound ramp from the white horse pike to 561 which is haddon avenue. chris. jessica, 4:02. this breaking news from overnight out of switzerland where authorities arrested six high ranking fifa officials on suspicion of taking millions of dollars of bribes. fifa is the organization that runs soccer's world cup. "nbc 10's" tracie davidson is live following this story. these raids occurred over the past few hours. this story is still developing,

right? >> reporter: still developing. federal prosecutors in new york are expected to announce corruption charges against fifa officials. the swiss attorney general says the names and nationalities of the suspects will be released later today. this is bribes that dates back to the '90ed through today. qatar got the nod despite the climate, lack of history and close ties to fifa president set bladder who is expected to win re-election to the post this week. you might be asking how is it american law enforcement is involved? what's the jurisdiction here? u.s. authorities believe the bribes were agreed to and carried out in the u.s. payments were made by u.s. banks. the suspects will return to the u.s. to make charges. they will appeal.

the process will take months. fifa has scheduled a news conference for an hour from now at 5:00 a.m. we'll be listening. we'll bring you any new information that comes out of that. tracy davidson "nbc 10 news." to texas now where that state is dealing with more severe weather and the governor is warning residents there that the waters are still rising in some areas. not the news they want to hear as the death toll from flooding in texas continues to edge higher, now at 17. the town of wimberley which is considered ground zero the blanco river rose 12 to 14 feet in a half an hour. one woman said she knew something was wrong when her younger sister called her at 1:00 a.m. >> we are now floating down the river. call mom and dad. i love you. and pray. >> those are the last words she heard from her sister laura, who is missing, along with her two

young children. 14 people in all are still missing. search operations will continue today. back here at home and new from overnight, a shooting in philadelphia's west oak lane area left three men injured and an innocent family shaken up. someone fired shots on ken zel street. four bullets hit a house nearby with a woman and her two sons inside, ages 10 and 12. thankfully they're okay. police have not arrested anyone. 4:05 now. students at two schools in cape may county are facing serious charges in a sexting scandal. matt delucia has the story. what happened and how did police find out about this? >> reporter: 20 students are in trouble here. that is because of this sexting scandal. police say that several nude and partially nude photos of female students were being exchanged via text message and social media. all of those charged are male

students at lower cape may regional high school entitlement middle school. police were tipped off and one of the victim's friends alerted officials this was going on. 20 cell phones were confiscated. all 20 students were charged with invasion of privacy which could mean two years in a state training school for juvenile offenders. one of the 20 is an adult and that student could face three to five years in prison. the superintendent says the families and most of the young men are fully cooperating amid a tough issue. >> with the new technology with parents, the school is continuing to try to educate students about the hazards of it. >> reporter: coming up at 5:00 students say this scandal, if you will is giving them a bad name. i'll have their thoughts on how all of this is playing out, chris. >> matt, thank you. happening montgomery county the man accused of secretly recording women in a department store dressing room will find

out if he's going to trial. miklos jugovics is charged with invasion of privacy and other crimes. police say in march jugovics used a pen with a built-in camera to film women at a target in abington township. he came back to the store one week later to pull the same stunt. also today, a chester county judge will decide if a dentist should stand trial for stealing drugs intended for his patients. that's what he's accused of. dr. chad gretzula is charged. he ellislely wrote prescriptions for his wife rebecca, and staffers. she worked as anesthesiologist. the couple replaced drugs that were used for sedating patients with saline solution which could have led to some painful experiences for patients. a newborn baby is still in

critical condition this morning after emergency crews rushed that child from bali's casino in atlantic city last night. investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened. the 2-month-old who had been born prematurely was having difficulty breathing around 7:30 monday night. they flew the baby to children's hospital in philadelphia. authorities are investigating. philadelphia police have officially linked this man to two attacks on women inside their south philadelphia homes. investigators noticed similarities between an attack on march and one on monday. in that most recent case the man sexually assaulted and woman and robbed her on the 1800 block of rose wood street. police are warning victims to lock their doors and windows. they believe the attacker lives in that area. today voters in the christina school district will decide whether to give themselves a property tax

increase. if they vote no they'll have to cut jobs classroom sizes. voters already voted no. they're now asking for a smaller tax increase. polls will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. more job cuts in the atlantic city school district. 32 tenured teachers received job layoffs. 42 people were reassigned. this was after 450 jobs were cut earlier. the city struggles with the loss of revenue from casino closures. >> it's a very difficult time because i don't have instant answers and i wish i did. >> now the teacher's union says the cuts will lead to larger class sizes and safety issues. the union has called in a team to help with potential legal fights. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> coming up on 10 minutes after 4:00.

71 degrees. it is warmer and steamier this morning than it was yesterday. and this afternoon we're looking at storms. i've issued a first alert for the potential for strong afternoon thunderstorms. the severe weather threat damaging winds and heavy downpours is a possibility for our area during the late afternoon and evening hours likely affecting the evening commute. before the storms get here we'll be enduring summer-like heat. the humidity is already higher and it's going to feel warmer through the day. in fact everybody is running warmer. 68 in doylestown. millville is 69 and it's 71 at philadelphia international. otherwise, we've got clear skies. scattered clouds. no sign of any showers in the immediate area. the radar screen will start to fill up though during the afternoon and evening hours and that's when we can see the timing. the line of showers is moving into western pennsylvania. those are light, scattered

showers. temperatures are just about at their coolest in western pennsylvania. we'll get filtered sunshine. a little less sunny than yesterday. into the upper 80s. with more humidity we'll be watching north and west for the line of showers to be moving in. 2:00 in the afternoon, maybe a sprinkle or two into reading and allentown. with heavy rainfall this afternoon, 4:00, 5:00 in the alan town and reading area. more likely to cisse veer weather development in central and eastern pennsylvania. i can't rule it out there completely. it's going to be a steamy day nonetheless. the chance of late day showers and thunderstorms. pocono mountains into the 70s. alan town quaker town and reading into the 80s. you'll see clouds take over after a partly sunny morning. 85 for doylestown, trenton and mount holly up to 87 today. at the shore, lower 70s for

presidential nomination. the social conservative ran in 2012. he surprised a lot of people by winning the iowa caucuses. santorum served two terms in the senate from 1995 to 2007. kentucky senator rand paul said christie's comments about him weren't, quote, very nice. christie criticized people who were voting for the patriot act. on the democratic side senator bernie sanders officially kicked off his presidential campaign in his hometown of burlington vermont. sanders is an independent but is pursuing the pitch for democrats. he wants to transform the nation's economy and politics. sanders is hillary clinton's only declared competitor in the race for the democratic nod. the state department announced

yesterday that beginning june 30th it will release on its website 55,000 pages of e-mails from clinton's time as secretary of state. the department will send out those e-mails in batches every 60 days. this move follows the orders of a federal judge last week. a cyber attack on the tax man. the irs says it's notifying more than 100,000 taxpayers who have had their information hacked. authorities say thieves used a service called get transcript to get data. they already had some knowledge about the taxpayers including social security numbers and birth dates. they breached the system from february to this month. the stolen information includes tax returns and other data on file with the irs. if you were impacted by the hacking the irs says it will notify you and will provide you with free credit tracking. 4:17 now. happening today, we will get the forecast for this year's atlantic hurricane season.

the national ocean anything and atmospheric administration or noaa will predict just how many named storms are expected and how strong they should be. the atlantic hurricane season begins monday and runs through november 30th. with temperatures looking like they'll reach near 90 the air conditioning units will be working overtime as will the people who service those ac units. we found out that not all of philadelphia school buildings have ac. many buildings are very old, of course. for schools with air conditioning on hot days workers will get in early to make sure the units are working fine. katy zachry is with us. katy, a lot of people are turning on the ac units for the first time and finding out it's not working. >> reporter: yeah, it's that awful sinking feeling, chris, that some of us have experienced when you go and turn your

thermostat to cool and it doesn't work. that is a call that quallett expects to get a lot of today. yesterday they were hard at work fixing units that people had turned on to get ready for the intense heat. at this business off of old york road one of their main air conditioners stopped running. yearly maintenance, we're told could have prevented this which ends up costing the owner about $5,000. >> what happens after not getting the units cleaned for five years, it cannot breathe. it overheats and you end up having to put a new unit in there. >> reporter: coming up in the next hour i'll have some very simple things that you can do to ensure that your unit runs well and that you do not need some of those costly repairs. reporting live in center city katy zachry "nbc 10 news." it has to be a steamy one. you can feel after you step outside the mugginess in the air, again, much like we had yesterday. maybe eveniery even steamier than

that. bill henley lets us know what to expect and maybe thunderstorms this afternoon. >> i do expect thunderstorms this afternoon. you can feel the higher humidity. no storms in the immediate area now. it will take most of the day for the storms to come around but they will be moving through later this afternoon and this evening. that's when we have the potential for severe weather. quiet, 71 degrees. the southerly wind bringing in the humidity. it is higher this morning. 81%. the temperature, 5 degrees warmer than yesterday. watching the skies this afternoon. this morning we'll see some sunshine and that southerly wind continues to bring the moisture in to the area. you will feel the difference today. even though temperatures will be very similar to where they were yesterday afternoon, high of 89 degrees, it's going to feel hotter today. the line of showers that we're watching in western pennsylvania, those are the clouds that will be moving in this afternoon. that will help to limit us to probably just short of the 90 degree mark. with recall warm, humid conditions and that line of showers moving in there's a

good possibility we'll cisse veer thunderstorms lining up this afternoon, especially for the northern western suburbs. chester, montgomery, bucks county. there's still a possibility in portions of new jersey and delaware. strong storms in texas. you can see them moving from eastern texas right now. heavy downpours there. we can see heavy downpours in our area. the chance of showers and thunderstorms, strong storms today, high temperatures in the upper 80s. it will feel like 90 degrees this afternoon. storms are a possibility again tomorrow. we'll see partly sunny skies and near 90 in the afternoon, thursday. come friday still steamy and still a possibility of some scattered showers and thunderstorms but i'm expecting a break in the storms on saturday. high of 88 degrees. and finally we'll get back to normal for this time of year. sunday afternoon, 77 degrees with a chance of showers and thunderstorms and then cooler. let's find out what's happening now. an update on what's happening on the pennsylvania turnpike. jessica? >> chris, looks like we might have some relief as we look at the maps in bristol. all lanes are closed in bristol between delaware valley and bensalem. all of these cars in the westbound lanes were completely red. now they're yellow. perhaps allowing a shoulder or a few cars to squeeze on through. very slow and a major backup. head out the door to the schuylkill expressway girard avenue, nonactive work zone. equipment in the right hand shoulder. drive times having no problems. if you're headed eastbound into center city 1 1 minutes from the blue route. as we head out to mass transit, no problems there as well. no delays for amtrak new jersey transit or septa. we'll check in with new jersey coming up. 4:22. philadelphia soul will treat hundreds of kids to their soccer match in atlantic city. one of the owners of the soul will be at a pennsylvania
