told to evacuate. there was a tornado outbreak. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in hard hit wimberley, texas. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt good morning. the death stole now to 23. rivers are swollen. severe thunderstorms are expected in parts of the state. all this as we are hearing more stories of heart-breaking loss. this morning swollen rivers are now causing officials to call for evacuations near houston, in warden about 60 miles southwest of the city the mayor is asking residents to voluntarily evacuate due to the rise of the colorado river. after relentless weather, rain floods and a tornado that literally sound like a freight train, texas is reeling. >> he knew how to make us happy. >> reporter: in divine texas, 18-year-old melissa ramirez just held her funeral.

the homecoming queen was back from prom when her car was swept away. her father tommy speaking publicly for the first time describes those final moments. >> i got a phone call from her at 2:45 in the morning and she wakes me up and i say, honey, what's going on? she goes, dad, what i do? my car's been hit with water west virginia do i do? what do i do? i said back the car up back ask car up! she says i can't, the car is tipping. i said i'm on my way, that's the last i got to speak to her. >> reporter: council president, co-editor of the yearbook tennis player valleyball star cheerleader, only a week from graduation. >> she wanted to study biology like her sid sister and some day be an optometrist. >> reporter: in wimberley, texas, more heart break. torts have identified the body of 42-year-old michelle kerry schaarva one of eight people

missing after a wall of water swept away a vacation home. we spoke with her sister and brother-in-law just before the tragic news. >> we're going to survive this together as a family. they say that we will get through this. today the search continues for the missing and those already lost are being missed. >> i will not requestion what should i have done what could i have done to torment myself? but i will draw on the memories and the grief will come and it will pass. >> reporter: sadly, authorities here in hayes county overnight announced they have recovered the body of a child. they are working to make a positive identification and matt and savannah it is very difficult times here but these families are being incredibly strong. >> gabe gutierrez, i wish we had better news weather-wise what seems to be the case?

city. unbelievable lightning show as another funnel system starts to push in and bring more torrential rain. enough to damage or destroy a home. we can tell you, we got rough stuff going on right now. in fact we can see oklahoma city under the gun with heavy thunderstorm moving through the area. flash flood watches, flash flood warnings over five states right now. we will continue to track this activity. we have more today, severe thunderstorms, dangerous lightning, hail flash flooding. 48 million people at risk today. possibility of tornadoes as well. to give you an idea we started slow with tornadoes, so far, through may 24th we got 273

tornadoes. normally by this time we have 214. we are about 28% ahead of schedule as far as tornadoes are concerned. the severe weather looks like from that region texas to oklahoma through sunday until we see a pattern. >> all right. al thank you very much. now a flareing mistake involving a deadly bacteria. how did the defense department mistakenly send live anthrax using fedex to labs in nine states also overseas. nbc's jim miklazewski is looking into that from the pentagon. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. despite this potentially deadly mixup, officials here at the pentagon insist there is no risk to the general public. this morning as many as four civilian lab workers who may have been exposed to live anthrax are receiving serious antibiotics to counter any potential threat. the centers for disease control

have spanned out today to military and civilian labs across the u.s. to determine if they've received live anthrax from the military. the cdc is also at the army's proving ground in utah which somehow ships live anthrax instead of inactive bacteria to 20 labs in nine states as far as away as the military base in south korea. >> there is no known risk to the general public and no person nel that show any signs of possible exposure. >> reporter: a potentially deadly brew came from a batch of anthrax produced more than a year ago. at the time it was radiated to kill any active spores. but only last week a civilian lab in maryland discovered it received live anthrax. those samples came from the same stock. odds are high other labs received the deadly bacteria. while exposure to anthrax can be fatal, everyone in that delivery

chain will be under intense medical scrutiny. >> the symptoms can manifest themselves in 12-to-14 hours and there will be time to give them preventative antibiotics or if the symptoms occur to treat the infection rigorously. >> reporter: there is concern, however, how the anthrax was handled when it was believed to be inactive. it was shipped commercially in protective packaging as inactive. but defense officials say live anthrax would require more secure packaging and warning labels. lab workers would have been required to use full protective suits to guard against any possible exposure. now this anthrax is being used to develop defenses against the deadly bacteria. but it turned out to be a threat in its own right t. bulletins at the cdc and pentagon have launched investigations into this deadly catastrophic event how it occurred in the first

place. matt savannah. >> it seems very hard to understand. jim miklazewski at the pentagon thank you very much. now to that frightening scene on the runway we told you about, a pilot drinking ability to take off with his young son on board. willie is following this story. >> good morning, guys. this one could have been a lot worse. >> that pilot under arrest taxiing into a shed. unfortunately, his plane never got off the ground. airport officials say the pilot christopher john hall had his son on board a twin engine cessna skymaster when the plane skid off the runway and crashed at melbourne airport about 70 miles southeast of orlando. the 67-year-old pilot was arrested for reckless operation of an aircraft under the influence and neglect of a child without great bodily harm. his plane wandered into a restricted area catching the attention of air traffic controllers who began to question his flight plan. >> hold your position. i didn't tell you to move.

settlement with tracy morgan and two other passengers in last june's fatal accident that left morgan severely injured and killed fellow comedian james mcnair. a quote, grateful morgan said in a statement, wal-mart did right by me and my family and their associates. the retailer saying we are deeply sorry about our truck was involved. a report says he was traveling 20 miles over the speed limit when he struck the limo van carrying morgan and his passengers. morgan has been seen only rarely in public during his recovery. like here last december, walking with assistance. the "snl" alum even missed the star-studded 40th anniversary special for "saturday fight live." though he did receive a shout outfrom his fellow "30 rock" cast mates. >> i wish my friend tracy morning would have been here tonight. he was hoping he would have been here too. >> mr. morelli, it's nice to see

recovery is possible. >> as i mentioned three years sober, which is an incredible accomplishment i'm sure along the way there were good days and bad days how did you get through? what gets you through on those dates that are harder? >> on the days that are harder i just there the a saying called play the record forward. so if i ever want to pick up and drink or use, i have to imagine, i have as to play it out, imagine, okay what would happen if i did that? it might start off small but in six weeks, where am i going to lead? and i also my fans have really held me accountable and it's been really incredible to have them as inspirations to say stay strong and stay sober as well. >> you look great. do you feel great? has it changed your life in terms of just your every day? >> yeah it's definitely changed my life in every single way possible and, yes, i went through a lot of stuff when i was young. i'm so glad that i did so that i can live a longer happier

long time now. where is the line between fact and fiction? >> i try not to find the line. it's more fun when the lines are blurred i think. but at the end of the day, this is a fantasy ride and sure it's about all of the pitfalls but what it's really about is the brothers and how they band together to survive it. >> and you know what i think they did really well the writers in this movie, each member of the entourage if you will has a story in this movie. >> i don't know how doug does it. he's a master at interweaving all these intricate story lines and they all work. they all come together at the end. >> they're juicy. it's not somebody has a minor little story. they all have something that plays in the movie. >> the great thing ability the showed and the movie now is the pace. it's so fast paced. it's always moving. it's just a great ride. >> the other part i really liked about it. we talked about this when you were here for the television series. all the people in hollywood and the world of sports who really loved the show and apparently love it for the movie, because
