threatening rains that won't stop across texas. more flash flooding could be on the way. president obama declared texas a disaster area. we have nbc's janet shamlian across texas for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. we hoped to show you the spillway but the weather is so bad right now, there is lightning, thunder and flash flood warning. our team has taken shelter to the ladies room because the weather is so bad right now. for people who live in texas, this is unimaginable after a week of punishing rain and flash flooding that we had here. another round of punishing rain for flood ravaged parts of texas. in wharton, a mandatory vac evacuation evacuation. >> it is like a ghost town.

>> reporter: the deluge hit dallas on friday. the ground saturated from weeks of rain. this time it came down so hard so fast roads flooded in an instant instant. dozens had to be rescued. for so the only way out is air lifted. parts of one highway will be shutdown for days. >> this water will not disappear overnight. it could take days. we are asking for people to head home early and find alternate routes. >> reporter: it has been the wettest month on record in texas. that is enough to cover the entire state in 8 inches of water. perhaps hardest hit the central texas town of wimberley. it is hard to know where to start. devastation everywhere. >> you see the damage done not to us but the houses on the street and the damage the river did. i think we are recover from the shock right now. >> reporter: the clean-up is stressful and could be dangerous. no one is certain what is in all

the mud and muck. >> a lot of contaminants in the water. chemicals, bacteria, viruses. >> reporter: the flood waters washed away treasures that can never been replaced. it delivered what no one wants. snakes and other reptiles turning up. >> not just the water, but the animals that come with it is frightening. >> reporter: so this weather is going to make clean-up in possible. it will take little to start the flash flooding all over again. as i said in denton county, we are under a flash flood warning. you can hear the thunder in the background. the storm sewers here are full. there will be more flooding in texas today. if this type of weather continues. erica. >> janet, thanks. stay safe. >> dylan, i wish we had better news for the plain states. 25 straight days of rain. >> you look at the amount of rain that has fallen within the

days of rain. we have flash flood watches in effect because of more rain headed to this area. we do see some rain across the midwest. it is this area in texas where we are seeing the thunderstorms right near where janet is. we have flash flood warnings in red. i can see in dallas and areas west of dallas, that is the heaviest rain this morning. we are already looking at about 20 inches of rain in some areas. in oklahoma this is the month of may, on average, 3 to 4 inches of rain. as we go through the day, this cold front will trigger more showers and storms. that flash flood threat continues. as we go into sunday afternoon and monday we will see the whole front move further to the east. it should give texas a break, but it is a temporary break. this set up and pattern remains and they will see future days of rain into next week. >> tough news. thanks dylan. former house speaker dennis hastert is out of sight this morning as he faces indictment he broke banking laws as a scheme to hide alleged sexual

misconduct with a male high school student years ago. the charges are a shock to those who know him well. nbc's kevin tibbles has more. >> reporter: it was here in illinois where hastert was a popular teacher and wrestling coach. revelations he had been paying hush money for past sexual misconduct left the community stunned. dennis hastert has not been seen at his home in plano, illinois about an hour west of chicago. but just down the road in yorkville, where he was a high school history teacher and wrestling coach, disbelief. hastert coached gary matlock. >> he was a professionals a teacher and coach and as a human being. i would refer to him as my second father. >> reporter: according to the

federal indictment hastert agreed to provide $3.5 million to someone in yorkville to conceal his prior misconduct. it does not reveal what the misconduct was or who the payments were made to. law enforcement officials told nbc news they were to a man and that the misconduct was of a sexual nature when the man was a student. prosecutors say hastert had already withdrawn $1.7 million from bank accounts and had broken federal banking transaction rules. political reverb rations traveled through illinois and beyond. >> i am saddened by this news and nobody wants to see a person's career of public service have this as their cap stone. >> it is surprising. that would be a universal response. >> reporter: speaker john boehner in a statement said the denny i served with worked hard on behalf of the constituents

and country. i am shocked and saddened to learn of these reports. the next phase in this is the legal one as early as next week where hastert will either plead guilty or not guilty to the charges against him. erica. >> kevin tibbles, thank you. let's get to sheinelle for more on the confrontation outside an arizona mosque. >> good morning. an angry standoff outside an islamic community center in phoenix. 500 demonstrators came face-to-face on friday. >> shame on you for believing the religion of lies. shame on you. >> the confrontation comes weeks after a violent attack in texas at a contest to draw the prophet muhammad. the two gunmen killed in that attack once worshipped at the phoenix mosque. no reported injuries or arrests. the democratic field may get a bit more crowded today.
