he lived on in their hearts. the younger biden was diagnosed with brain cancer nearly two years ago. a diagnosis he and his family largely kept private. still after aggressive treatment he was given a clean bill of health. but earlier this year he suffered a relapse, and was admitted to walter reed a week and a half ago. born in 1969 in wilmington, delaware, joseph robinette "beau" biden became a promising politician serving as delaware's 44th attorney general. he was also an iraq war veteran, awarded the bronze star. but his greatest high orty his wife hallie and his two children. for the bidens this is not the first time tragedy has struck. in 1972 beau was a little boy when he was injured in a car accident that killed his sister and mother. his father, joe biden, had just been elected to the u.s. senate, and was famously sworn in at beau's bedside. a heavy topic that beau talked about while introducing his father at the 2008 democratic national convention.

>> one of my earliest memories was being in that hospital. my dad always at my side. we, my brother and i, not the senate, were all that he cared about. >> condolences are now pouring in. for a young man whose future seemed as bright as his father's. biden was widely expected to run for the governor of delaware in 2016. speaking for his entire family joe biden said, quote, beau biden was quite simply the finest man any of us have ever known. carl? >> kristen welker at the white house this morning. kristen, thanks. nbc's chuck todd and andrea mitchell both join us now. good morning to both of you. thanks for being with us. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> andrea, i want to start with you. as kristen pointed out in her piece and as many americans have seen over the years the bidens are this very tight-knit family. that bond for beau and his father, of course, really strengthened at a young age in tragedy. talk to us about this side of beau biden, and family and its importance. >> beau biden was such a family

man, and the bond between that father and son was just inseparable. they did everything together. they loved politics. but more than politics, they loved family. he was such a father, a brother son, and the fact that, you know, we've done interviews with him on his anti-poverty crusade, his help for children as the attorney general of delaware his public service, his iraq war service, which so informed what jill and his dad joe biden did with iraq and iraq veterans and military familys went to iraq with them shortly after he served there and just watching jill and joe biden in baghdad with the troops and how informed they were by what their son had experienced there. i can't tell you what a fine person he was, and how much all of us who really cared about him and knew him well are really feeling this loss for the whole family. >> just a terrible loss. at the young age of 46, on the

national stage, chuck, he was, of course, known by many people across the country as the vice president's son. but as andrea just alluded to on the local level he was also very dedicated to serving his community. >> you know he was. in fact he, you know, he wasn't so ambitious that he put politics in front of sort of public service. you know when he won his first stint as attorney general in 2006 the assumption was he was going to try to go on some fast track to replace his father in the u.s. senate when his father became vice president. and he had an opportunity to run for his dad's senate seat and he said no because he felt as if it would break a commitment that he made when he ran for attorney general, and instead he ran for re-election as attorney general, and look, he got high marks. he had to deal with some very high profile, very tough cases. as an attorney general might in any state. he handled it with dignity, with grace. look joe biden and beau biden were fathers and sons have bonds everywhere. these two were forged because of tragedy. they were best friends.

joe biden spends every weekend and has been even more, made a more of a concerted effort over the last year to spend every weekend at home in delaware because his son was fighting this and he didn't want to miss a moment. this is just -- you can't fathom the ache, the aching that joe biden is feeling today. >> your heart just goes out to the entire family. andrea, chuck, we appreciate it. thanks for being here. >> you bet. >> now to the breaking news out of switzerland where secretary of state john kerry was airlifted to a hospital after a bike crash in france. let's go to nbc's katy tur for the latest. >> good morning carl. the u.s. press officer in geneva confirms secretary kerry did break his leg this morning while biking in france. secretary kerry was airlifted to a swiss hospital. we're told he never lost consciousness, and is now in stable condition. the accident happened about 25 miles from geneva, where kerry has been in ongoing nuclear talks with iran's foreign minister. the associated press reports that a paramedic traveling with

in texas. now keep in mind even though the rivers have crested they are still a little bit above flood stage so there will still be some gladding. but the fact that we are going to lose the rain in texas for the next several days is certainly a good sign for those waters can start to recede. this is the cold front that brought the most recent round of rain. we are still seeing some down near houston 7 that will end shortly. we are going to see this cold front move to the east. we do have a slight risk of some flooding across parts of the northeast because of the heavier downpours that we could see. this will mostly develop later on this afternoon and into this evening. we could see as much as an inch or so of rain down through memphis, but up into new england, some areas across upstate new york could end up with about two inches. if it comes down quickly in a short period of time we could see some brief flooding. we're also looking at a slight risk of stronger storms eastern ohio through southern pennsylvania stretching into northwestern new jersey. it's in this air why where we could see some larger hail, possibly some stronger wind gusts with those storms some heavier downpours and we can't rule out an isolated tornado. but it should be a weak tornado
