the revealing interview in "vanity fair.." >> caitlyn doesn't have any secrets. >> the writer who spent hours with jenner joins us live. >> today, june 2nd 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. if you have ever spent any time in a line at airport security you are going to be shocked by the story this morning. >> the head of the tsa is out. people are going to be infuriated by this. these results are unacceptable. >> we're going to get more to this shakeup at the tsa. but right now to breaking news. a rescue effort unfolding in china this hour after a cruise ship flipped over on the yangtze river. bill neely has the latest on this. bill, good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, a van that. good morning, everyone. it's now clear this is china's worst passenger ship disaster in almost 70 years. more than 400 people are still missing. relatives are distraught. and they're asking not only how did the ship sink but how come the captain left the ship and survived? the search for survivors is a separate one. hammering on the overturned hull to try to make contact with passengers still trapped inside. but time is running out on the yangtze river where the ship with more than 450 on board sank in rough weather. some people have been rescued. this 65-year-old woman was pulled out by divers. a few managed to swim ashore but after a day of searching hope is fading for so many more on "the eastern star" which was carrying hundreds and crew.

the ship's captain and chief engineer are among the survivors and are in police custody. no distress call was sent. chinese leaders have rushed to the scene. thousands of police and rescuers are helping, but weather conditions are poor and visibility low leaving relatives clinging to fading hope that their loved ones will be pulled out. well the captain has now been questioned by police. he says the ship was caught in a cyclone and sank very quickly while many passengers were asleep. but he abandoned them to save himself and he failed to make a distress call and relatives want to know why. >> desperate hours there. bill thank you. another major story we're covering this morning. new concerns over airport security here in the united states. tsa screeners failing 95% of the time when undercover agents

tried to smuggle mock weapons past them. this morning that has led to the reassignment of the acting head of the agency. tom costello covers agency. good morning. >> reporter: yeah. the decision came rather quickly after this internal investigation found agents failed miserably when homeland security red teams tried to smuggle mock weapons past checkpoints. tsa is waiting on congress to confirm a new administrator, but they are ordering immediate changes at all airports. this morning the acting head of the tsa is out. melvin carrollway an 11-year veteran of the agency who took over in january immediately reassigned to another area within the department of homeland security. the move comes after a humiliating internal investigation from homeland security found that tsa checkpoint screeners failed to detect weapons and contraband in a majority of tests carried out.

the tests were conducted by homeland security red teams. charged with probing tsa check points nationwide. nbc news has confirmed, screening officers failed to detect smuggled weapons in 67 out of 70 attempts. in one case an alarm sounded, but even during a patdown the screening officer failed to find a fake explosive taped to an undercover officer's back. bill pistol, i spoke to him on monday. >> from the training point are the offers when the technology doesn't detect them. >> reporter: jeh johnson says additional red team test results are classified but tsa has been conducted to conduct training in all airports nationwide spels intensive training for all supervisory personnel. >> needed a theory of analysis to determine what the problem is.

>> reporter: with the acting tsa chief reassigned the deputy director now taking over until a new administrator is awaiting senate confirmation. >> i think a lot of people are simply going to say how could this happen after all these years and billions of dollars spent. i mean is it possible they're really going to do the job of beefing up what's happening at the airport on those lines? >> reporter: yeah. i think that's a good question. listen. a couple of points here. first of all, you know, the former tsa chief pistole says these teams are super terrorists. they are inside the tsa and homeland security. they know the vulnerabilities of the checkpoints. they are to probe and probe to prove they can get a weapon by. but still a 95% failure rate is very concerning. that says there's a systematic problem. they're not simply able to detect weapons. also could i also make a point?

we've had tsa officers wounded and killed on the job and they have prevented terrorist attacks. they have prevented violent criminals from getting on board. they have a record of doing their job, but clearly in this case they failed miserably. >> tom costello in washington thank you very much. meantime it's going to be a messy commute across the east once again today. heavy rain triggering new flooding now from the southeast to new england. dylan who's in for al has more on that. >> good morning. yesterday was really bad across parts of new jersey into d.c. take a look at what we saw in newark new jersey fish flopping in the street. that's how much rain we had. that one's got a long way to go before it finds a place that's good for him. we've had heavy rainfall from new jersey extending down into washington, d.c. where we had 4 inches of rain fall in a very short period of time. we also had a tree fall on this bus here. all the passengers were safe. they climbed out the back door. but we had a lot of wind damage with some of the storms that developed yesterday. we also had viewer photos of

some of the stronger storms near washington, d.c. you can see this video on instagram. the wind swept rain and it stranded a lot of commuters during the evening commute yesterday in the d.c. area. this morning it's the morning commute mainly across new england. we do have some flash flood watches in effect from new jersey to new england. we could still see some heavier downpours produce some flash flooding. look how chilly it is. 47 in boston right now. philadelphia is at 53. not only is it a wet day, but it's going to be chilly and below average as well. this area of low pressure will continue to move to the northeast. we'll dry out up across network later on today. but this is going to stall out and we will see several days of showers and storms. they could end up with about 4 inches of rain in the next 48 hours. >> can't believe how chilly it is out today. thank you, dylan. natalie's here with the fight on capitol hill over tools

to track terrorists. >> the senate expected to vote today on the bill that would end the bulk collection of u.s. phone records. it expired midnight on sunday. the nsa stopped gathering the phone records from companies. the bill known as usa freedom act would reauthorize the surveillance but would faze out the collection of phone records over time. meantime amtrak's president will face tough questions on capitol hill today over the crash that killed eight people. the train from washington to new york derailed on a curve while going over 100 miles per hour and there's still no word on why it was going so fast. secretary of state john kerry is back in the united states. he arrived at a boston hospital late monday night in an ambulance where he's expected to have surgery. secretary secretary kerry broke his leg over the week while cycling in eastern france. and kerry is in good spirits. hundreds of mourners gathered on monday to pay their respects to three members of the

savopoulos family who requester murdered in their home last month. savvas savopoulos his wife amy, and their young son philip were honored. daron wint a former employee of the family's business has been arrested and charged with first degree murder. some frightening video out of japan. four people were injured when a giant kite crashed into a crowd at a weekend festival. hundreds are gathered there for an event when a flier lost control of the kite. it weighed 1500 pound. one person in serious conditions. strong winds may have contributed to that crash. and take a look at this. call it way too close to comfort. a police officer in mississippi comes dangerously close to a lightning strike. the moment caught on the car's dash cam as heavy storm clouds moved across the area. the blinding flash came down and it struck the bridge in front of

on public relations. >> reporter: but proponents say the drug is addressing a real problem. low sexual desire with a pill taken every night that targets chemicals in the brain, not another organ. in the latest clinical trial, more than a thousand women diagnosed with low desire took it or a placebo for about six months. the women on the medication reported improvements in sexual desire and twice as many satisfying sexual events as before. side effects included fatigue, nausea, and sleepiness. amanda parrish was part of that trial. the divorced mom of four used to pretend to be asleep to avoid sex. but after two weeks on the pink pill -- >> i'm like my word this drug is working. >> i thought it was terrific. i mean it was like my girl is back. and she was flirty again. it was like going back to what we had. >> reporter: what did you call it? randy teenager?

attacked. authorities are reviewing all of the evidence which reportedly includes pictures the woman was taking of the lion right before it attacked her. a 22-year-old american woman was killed by a lion at a south african wildlife park on monday after she left her car window down. witnesses say a female lion like this one walked slowly up to the suv while the woman was taking photos of it before it suddenly sprang. biting her through the open window. monday's incident was not the first at the park which promises nowhere can you get closer to a pride of lions and other animals and still be completely safe. just last march an australian man was also attacked through his open car window. the park says it repeatedly warns tourists both verbally and marked signs to lock their doors and keep their windows up. >> witnesses that were there at the time that saw this incident took place, they said both of the windows were wide open.

and it's contrary to all our signage. >> reporter: it's a warning many people often ignore. just look at this clip. kids hanging out of the back of a car trying to get a better shot of a lion only feet away. but even with windows closed the close views can sometimes turn into close calls like this one where a lion opens a car door with its teeth. >> lock the door. >> oh my gosh. i didn't know they could do that. >> reporter: outtakes like these are a big draw on the internet. lion after lion clawing on windows and chasing down cars as they try to speed away. sadly this time it seemed the people in the car weren't so lucky. the issue according to the guides is that there are so many people taking these tours now that the lions have lost their natural fear of humans and of cars feeling much more confident to attack. matt and savannah the lion in this incident is now in an isolated pen, but the park

have got money from it could have got exposure from it. they said dad, you have the ability to have a legacy in sports as a sports figure equal to muhammad ali. you can be a trail blazer here in becoming a woman and becoming a transgender woman. don't blow that with spectacle. don't blow that and they said we do not want to participate. they must have been asked a dozen times. >> how does she feel about it? because she's doing it in a public way, which she's a public figure. in some sense she has no choice about that. >> i think that's right. i mean bruce as bruce said at one point what are my options? i can move to alaska. i can live in the hills. i can live on an iceberg somewhere but the paparazzi will find me. they always do. i can do that or i figured out i need to go public. i think the docuseries is going to be a combination of the serious and she's going to have fun. she's going to try to hit a golf ball 300 yards. it's much harder with breasts, let's face it. >> you talk about kris jenner. there's been a dispute between

them about how much kris jenner knew about these gender issues. what did she tell you? >> you know and kris was civil during the interview and was very open. she said i didn't know. i thought it was a man boob situation. i had a solid "b" cup. as a journalist i didn't want to delve closely into that. i didn't know. i had no idea about the gender issues the severity. i think she's right. i think bruce down played it. it was a phase in my life. it's over. it wasn't over. everyone i think kris has accepted whatever happened in the past i can fix it. and look. they produced two wonderful children and he was a terrific father to the kardashians and i think made it harder for the jenner kids. >> all the jenner kids are hoping to have a relationship with the new caitlyn jenner. that's a good ending to this story. thank you for sharing with us. the july issue of "vanity fair" hits newsstands june 11th.

"nbc 10" breaking news. and that breaking news you're looking at video here from a plane on the tarmac at philadelphia international airport. right now police are on the scene. they are investigating a bomb threat there. u.s. airways flight 648 arrived from san francisco about 6:00 this morning. so a little under two hours ago. now parked on the tarmac as bomb sniffing dogs are going through that plane. the commuter jet was carrying 88 passengers and 5 crew members. "nbc 10" was there as everyone on board was being removed from the plane. the passengers are being taken to the terminal building where they will be assisted with their connecting flights or their final destinations. no one there was hurt. we'll continue to follow this breaking news. it's also, again, we should tell you that this was a hoax but we'll continue to make phone calls and bring you updates as they come in.

this one, a 65-year-old woman who was pulled from the ship after somehow rescuers heard her. midwest of the 450 chinese tourists are between 50 and 80 years old. the ship sank late at night in high winds and drifted down river for two miles. the captain and chief engineer of the ship escaped. they told police it was a cyclone and the ship sank very quickly while most of the passengers were asleep. there was no distress call. relatives who, of course are distraught want to know why the captain took no emergency action and why he abandoned his passengers and survived. >> lots of questions there. thanks so much. the acting head of the tsa has been reassigned after an alarming breakdown in airport security. homeland security agents posing as passengers were able to smuggle test guns and explosives in checkpoints in 67 out of 70 tries. that's a 95% failure rate. home lantd security has ordered additional training at airports

across the country. the oklahoma highway patrol has released a portion of a dash cam video showing a deadly confrontation between a trooper and church pastor. it shows him shoving an officer who responded friday after fisher's truck got stuck in flood waters and fisher was shot and killed during that altercation. police say he had a handgun in his possession. fisher's brother was arrested and charged with assault and public intoxication. the family has challenged the officers. lawmakers in san francisco have a list of measures to target sugary drinks. there will be a label saying it leads to obesity and tooth decay. that would be a first in the

endurance athlete sam fox, no relation who's setting off on that quest for the michael j. fox foundation. willie joining us because this is a cause close to his heart. guys welcome. good to see you. so i rode my bike 230 miles, you couldn't let me have my moment. you had to top this. >> let me be clear, i'm not doing this. i'm going to the highest point in north dakota. that's what i'm doing. but sam is an amazing athlete and amazing son. his mother hz parkinson's and he's been motivated to get involved. >> lay out for people exactly what you're going to be doing. this is a guy who woke up one day and decided to run from new york city to the east end of long island. 100 miles in one day. what are you doing for this one? >> my mom was diagnosed with parkinson's when i was a young teenager. when i was in my early 20s i sort of -- i saw her symptoms progressing. i was out taking a run, realized

that maybe i have sort of a knack for endurance. i wanted to try to use that to make an impact in her life. i've done a few endurance projects. this is the biggest one to date. 14,000 mile journey across the u.s. climbing the highest point in every one. >> the hiking the biking the climbing. what makes you most nervous about this challenge? >> most nervous, probably the biking. a lot of cars on the road. but i'm mostly excited. this is going to be a lot of fun, i think. we're doing things i really like to do. climbing, doing any kind of endurance sport but also we're meeting hundreds of people out there in the parken ninson's community. >> it's a chance for people with parkinson's or having it in their family to get together and be active with other families. and move forward. >> and it continues the great work of the michael j. fox foundation. we'll talk to you more. spend time with willie in the next hour.

>> you're here to talk philosophy of life. what's your philosophy? >> my philosophy is to make the best out of every moment. everybody has some bad moments. everybody has some people who are trying to be like pessimistic. and i'm saying out of my life experience -- now i'm going to be 87 -- and out of being an orphan and all of the other things i'm saying the one thing that i've learned, you have to make the best out of everything you can. if it's a sad day, say okay today i have a sad day. tomorrow will be better. >> if anyone embodies this it has to be you. you mentioned a few moments ago you were orphaned at the age of 10 years old. you lost your mother in the holocaust. >> not just my mother. my parents, my grandparents everybody.

i went to an orphanage. then i went to palestine. maybe you forgot matt i was a sniper. i wrote it in the book. i can put five bullets in the same area. i never killed anybody. but then i was fortunate to go and i'm going to talk about that in the book. what it is to be in a crowded room and i'm very short. i took a good looking guy like matt and i told him put me up on the window sill. because otherwise i can't see. and i passed all the exams and i came to this country. and look what happened. sexually speaking on wyny. >> you were a phenomenon. when you give out advice to people, they listen. you do get asked about sex a lot especially from young people. what is the most frequent question they have about sex?

>> these days the most important question among married couples is boredom in the bedroom. and i'm saying read the book and then you'll know that you can't have boredom and you can't bring your worries in the bedroom. leave them outside the door. make a package. the next day they'll be there. so the important thing is people are more sexually literal now because of people having talking like you television people. but there's still a lot of education to be done. >> you've done a lot of good. you really have. you've given out a lot of advice and helped a lot of people. dr. ruth it's always great to see you. >> we showed the book. but more than that we want to say happy birthday. you have a birthday coming up don't you? >> two days from now. >> happy birthday to you. >> look at this. >> happy birthday.

all right. we are back with "today's" kitchen. we're firing up the grill on this taco tuesday. it's fast delicious, and kid friendly. my fiance behind the blog siriusually delicious. let's get to it. when we make our tacos, we decide to just go high quality ingredients. very simple. >> good ingredients, simple. >> the steak we usually use is a flank steak. use a skirt steak if you want. we did a classic tritip the other day. this is cilantro garlic, pepper. we're going to put in olive oil. i love to marinate in a big bag like this. >> it's easy to massage it and b

also great cleanup. you just throw the bag away. >> throw this in the fridge for an hour yeah? >> at least. get it on the grill. >> five or six minutes on each side. we normally barbecue this but it's raining outside. >> i'm going to make home made corn tortillas. one ingredient which is corn flour. and to this i'm going to add about a cup and a half of hot water. and all you do is shake itpe it with your hands. i'm going to use a spoon for a second because it's hot. >> it's not intimidating. >> it's not. one ingredient. water and the flour. now i'm going to use my hands. >> you mix that up. i'm going to let this rest about five minutes before chopping it. maybe i should get my cocktail. >> yes. the best part. >> again, this is going to be the simple margarita. tequila and use a good one.

but we're not going to mess it up with too many ingredients. just fresh lime juice which is the most important thing. >> he loves tequila. >> i'm going to make golf ball sized balls and this is a tortilla press which is awesome. but if you don't have one, smash these between two things of parchment paper. look how easy this is and it comes out uniform. and i'm going to throw it on the grill. >> i put a little bit of agave in. fresh lime juice. about half and half there. we're going to pour it and it's delicious. we're going to put a garnish on it. >> did you taste a little? >> i am going to. downstairs you guys are eating the simple taco tuesday right? >> so good. >> that is a winner right there. the home made tortilla. i love it. >> and this margarita is great.

at 65 who would have thought. thank you for your support. this was -- >> fascinating article. yeah. >> it popped up in your inbox and twitter. and you say my gosh, that's the form ever bruce jenner. >> there was a moment i was walking on 5th avenue and you could see everybody looking at their phones like oh my gosh. getting the news and looking at the picture. everybody was talking about it. and she looks amazing. i guess if you're going to go for it, you go for it. and caitlyn is a beautiful woman. >> that bustier is $200. apparently it sold out already. that's one of the reports out there indicated. down to what she was wearing people were fascinated by. but i personally the kind tweets from strangers and from her children were just so sweet. i mean i can't imagine and none of us can, the notion of not being free. maybe you can equate it if you were in a relationship that is

dysfunctional or violent. but to say i'm free. feeling like your life has been in bondage for 65 years. and to do it in this way. to say this is who i am now. >> the tweets from the president said it takes courage to share your story. some people made the comparison to jessica lange in terms of appearance. jessica reached for comment said that is so wonderful. now i'm going to have to look for that picture. so she was flattered by the comparison. the "vanity fair" piece written by buzz bissinger hits newsstands on the 11th. >> he spent months with bruce and then as he became caitlyn he spent a lot of time with caitlyn as well. and to hear how bruce becoming caitlyn suffered a panic attack

just hours after the femininization surgery and had to have therapists come over and talk to her and to let her know the comments is normal fear and anxiety and all the feelings you're feeling. talk to people about the emotional side of this. obviously a difficult thing to choose to do this and to put on the dress. but it's another thing entirely to start thinking like a woman and doing everything like a woman. and she's now doing that. >> and she's not doing it alone. going back to their youngest child is 17. while this is a moment of courage for caitlyn this is not happening in a vacuum. yes, we're all watching from the outside and people have speculated on the spectacle that is or things that go along it. but it separates that they are the kardashians. they are still kids.

a 17-year-old, a 20-something 20-something-year-old. and they're on this journey with their father. and we talked about the relationship with kris jenner. we don't discuss how she must feel. because they still -- their stories still don't align. she thought it was a passing phase in his life. he was like how could you have thought that. >> so this one i have to say second to the caitlyn headline this blew me away last night. the tsa, the failure to detect fake explosives and weapons through the checkpoints of some of the nation's busiest airports. so they sent in basically a team an undercover team to see how effective tsa workers are how well they're doing their

job. they smuggled in weapons as i mentioned. 67 out of the 70 attempts, that's a 95% failure rate, that's the score at these nation airports. i don't even know what -- where to begin with this. i know people have talked about that it's not the best paying job. maybe you have to bring in the best and brightest. it means you've got to pay more. i don't know if that's validated. >> it's a tough job though. and i give them credit because those who are doing their job, they've been shot at. they've had to put themselves in difficult positions. that said, it's a massive glaring failure of the system and what's going to fix it? who knows. >> i think they have to overhaul it.

one of the criticism is they kept recirculating people from within and that you have to break the system. and some have argued privatization. >> we poured tons of money into the tsa. i don't think money is the problem. when you think of all the stuff we've done over the last 14 years. taking shoes off, mothers giving up breast milk. >> think of the bottled water issue. yeah. >> then you look at that number and say what are we doing this snr. >> all i know is one time shortly after september 11th and i will tell you honestly, i accidentally had -- i had an eight inch long serrated steak knife in my bag. >> you always travel with that. >> i had brought it to work the day before cutting a grapefruit. yes. this is a huge knife. it was in the bottom of my bag and it was six months after 9/11. and i remember like it got through two airports. we had a transfer in st. louis. two airports. nobody stopped it.

the only reason i finally -- i'm like whab is that metal sound. i went to the restroom i reached down and cut my hand. i was like my gosh. then i was in a panic like what do i do? i felt like i had a weapon. >> ditch the bag and run. >> this was right after it. i like wrapped it up in toilet paper and threw it in the trash. >> did you? >> that's what i would have done. dump it and run. >> now you really look guilty. >> i know. i could just see the headlines now. >> i would have dumped and run. i have to say, the secretary of homeland security said that the tsa has been directed to conduct training for all of its officers in airports across the country. i just think people will say it should be privatized. >> something has to happen. yeah. all right. this is another tragic, tragic story. 22-year-old american woman she was attacked by a lion in south

africa and died. she was at a wildlife park there. she had left her car window down which they advise against you doing. witnesses say the lion approached and lunge at the suv while she was taking photos. the driver was also injured. the lion sprang into the car bit her through the open window and, again the park does warn tourists about getting too close. also tells them to keep the doors locked. over the years as people have come to visit these parks more and more, people -- the lions have lost their fear according to animal experts. they no longer have fear of humans and of cars. we've seen all this footage of close calls before. the video we showed you earlier in march. when a lion actually opened the

door handle to the car. this is how close we are getting to nature and how close they are to figuring out how we work as well. take a look at this video. last year there were some kids at a park in south africa look at them. they're leaning outside of the car window. and look how close that lion is. it could easily -- look at that. he could have got the kids. >> i keep watching it. >> it is scary. >> you know the signs couldn't be more clear. doors locked, windows up. >> the signs say stop and people still go. it's crazy. >> here's another one that has gone viral. dog lovers in taiwan are loving this new kind of grooming to their pets. they are styling their dogs into perfectly trimmed cubes. how do the dogs feel about this? i'm sure they're not liking it

who need it. >> i've been lucky enough to be in a situation to do something and it's been a privilege. but the thing is there's a million people in the states that are affected by parkinson's. but when you think of families and friends and the wider network, it's a lot of folks. joining our ranks. we hope to go out of business soon. but what sam is doing is incredible because it brings in a lot of the community to be out there and to own their connection to parkinson's and to be proactive and feel good about it. >> sam, your mom lucy was diagnosed 15 years ago. you're trying to raise a million dollars for parkinson's research. you're going to earn that money over 48 states. you're going to summit the highest peak in each state, right? how'd you come up with this plan? >> it was actually put together by the team fox faithful community.

we put out a challenge to come up with my next trip. and we put together pieces of some of the more extreme ones. this is what we got. >> wow. we're going to be rooting for you on this. in addition to rooting because we can't get on a bike and ride that far, what else can people at home and those out there watching do to help this cause and to help with the research? >> it's a good question. with tour de fox specifically there are over a hundred events in a hundred days we're on the road. so we're really spreading ourselves a little bit thin but we've got celebration events. you can climb or ride with me. simplest thing could be go to the website and give to the challenge. the map sort of speaks for itself. >> really it is that sense of community coming together. how much does this mean to parkinson's and to you, michael? >> we started as a research organization, like, not having it down. have money come in and go to the best researchers possible.

madeline furnstrum. let's start with this study that came out the relation between fiber intake and diabetes 2. >> there's always been a situation the last couple decades about how much fiber you have and risk of diabetes. this was a study done in europe. so thousands of people were asked how much fiber you eat over a period of about ten years. and what they found is the people that ate the highest amounts of fiber or said they did had a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes. it means this is a useful thing and whether it's fiber alone or it does help with weight loss as well, it could be one of those too. most americans don't eat enough fiber. >> so let's talk about what we need to be eating for women and for men. >> it's something that is hard to get enough fiber. women need about 21, 26 grams. and men, 26 to up to 38 because men are bigger. my general rule of thumb is over 20 grams, you're doing great. and that's not hard to do. let's take look.

taking a look at the headlines. new analysis finds that breast-fed babies have a 14% to 19% lower risk of pediatric leukemia the most common childhood cancer. but one expert with the american cancer society warns the study does not prove that breast-feeding prevents cancer. get on your feet. that's the advice of some british researchers who say sedentary workers should stand for at least two hours a day to avoid health risks from too much sitting. the panel also recommends workplace standing time should eventually increase to four hours each day and companies are urged to provide sit/stand desks and allow periods of walks to break up periods of sitting.

while i couldn't give them all a home, i could make sure they were healthy. assisting the doctor with exams. my first patient. >> little kazoo there. >> reporter: 1.24 pounds. >> excellent. he started out at .8 pounds last week. >> reporter: they were given a clean bill of health. my next patient was a 9-year-old beagle who came to the shelter because his elderly owner could no longer care for him. you ready to be a patient? he had never had his teeth cleaned and i've never cleaned teeth so this is going to be a new experience for both of us. >> before anesthesia, we have to check the color to make sure it's nice and pink. >> reporter: going to have a george clooney smile when done here. gloves on i got to work. >> this is the fun part.

>> yeah. >> what i did when i did a book, an autobiography, not this one, because by now i have worked it out, i did go to a therapist and i said, i have to talk to you about having been an orphan at the age of 10, losing my entire family. you two have to know, had the allied not entered world war ii i wouldn't be alive. i was in an orphan in switzerland and they would have taken me now. look at me now with women like you, four grandchildren, the best grand children in the world. nobody has grandchildren like me. i have a lot to be grateful for. and that's why i did the book. >> we were talking about yesterday with tracy morgan, how important gratitude is. a lot of people have problems and we could sit around and go why me, why me god, but if you start to say thank you and look around at what you do have, something chemical changes in you, doesn't it? >> it's not only chemical that

changes. look, i'm going to be 87, look how straight i walk. >> yes. >> i don't walk bent. >> yeah. all the time. >> of course i have sex all the time. from morning to night, except when i'm on your show. so the important thing is not to be with people, that's what you have to tell your audience, not to associate with people who are negative. >> yeah. >> they will bring you down. >> you both know people who are constantly complaining about the weather, about anything under the sun. tell those people, go home. >> did you do that in your life? you just weeded people out? >> i certainly tried first to change the attitude. i said, if you don't talk to me about something that is uplifting. >> yeah. >> something in addition to your problems. >> yeah. >> you have to find another topic. i want to hear some problems, but i also want to hear how you work it out. >> i had it to tell somebody in my life once, if you can't be a
