an exclusive look at her documentary today. wednesday, june 3rd, 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning. welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning. it's a busy day. a big day in the fight against terrorism here in this country. >> that's right. we had an overnight arrest tied to a terror plot in boston. the president overnight signed a sweeping overhaul of surveillance laws and there's also word now that the fbi is keeping an eye on you from surveillance planes above. we'll get to all of this. we're going to start this morning with nbc justice correspondent pete williams who's in boston with the latest on the terror arrest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this city embraced its police after the marathon bombings. now authorities say they've disrupted a plot to attack that police force that may have been provoked by isis-inspired social

media. the question this morning, were others involved? police and federal agents arrested this man late tuesday in the boston suburb of everett in connection with the investigation. heavily armed police and federal agents conducted searches there after a boston man was shot tuesday when terrorism investigators sought to question him. usaama rahim was shot and killed after police say an officer and fbi agent approached him at a bus stop and he came at them with this knife. officials say surveillance video not released publicly showed what happened. >> we saw the video where it appears the law enforcement officers were backing away before they exercised deadly force. >> reporter: investigators tell nbc news they belief rahim was preparing to attack police in boston within the next few days. radicalized, they say, by isis social media. he had been under 24-hour a day surveillance for weeks.

they began looking for others that may have been in contact with rahim searching locations nearby. >> i saw a line of what looked like s.w.a.t. team members with shields and battering rams and a bunch of machine guns. >> reporter: officials say expect to see other scenes like this as isis reaches out more with social media and the fbi ramps up surveillance. usaama rahim's brother says he was shot three times in the back but authorities say he was shot in the torso and the abdomen, not the the back. matt? >> pete williams in boston. pete thanks very much. shawn henry, former executive director of the fbi is the president of crowd strike services. goopd good to see you. good morning. >> hi matt. >> let's talk about usaama rahim. he was under round the clock surveillance for weeks. we know that. the law enforcement officials suspected him of plotting against police officers. now they go to the step of

confronting him or wanting to go up to talk to him on the street. after those weeks of surveillance what would have triggered that kind of approach? >> you know when you're following somebody like that you've got somebody under 24-hour surveillance it's indicative of the fbi having large concern about what he's involved in, those are very intensive, resource intensive. you don't put that type of surveillance on just anybody. for them to then go out and confront him on the street it indicates to me there was some change in his behavior. that the agents and the terrorism task force members saw something that caused concern for public safety. and by approaching him, it may have been in an attempt to disrupt him. they may not have had enough probable cause to arrest him, but they were concerned. that's what would cause that activity. >> you say concern for public safety. yet from the reports i've read as they approached him on the street they had their weapons in their holsters. what does that tell you about their level of concern? >> you're going to take your

weapons out if you believe you're walking into an immediately dangerous situation. they may have just been looking to talk to him and drew their weapons when the knife came out. they may not have known he was armed at the time. they perhaps didn't want to take the weapons out in public like that. it wasn't necessary. but they'll make that determination. every case is fact specific. >> and how hard is it? we know there's been a second arrest tied to this case. how hard is it to determine if he was an individual or if he was part of a much larger group? >> you know matt this is the challenge that the fbi is facing right now. these types of investigations are incredibly resource intensive. there's always the balance -- when you hear somebody who's espouseingeing violence they're talking about this jihadist cause and harming americans, they've got to take a look at that and got to balance that against the privacy of the individuals and about the

safety. in this particular case they are absolutely going to look to see who else he was talking to. are there other co-conspirators? are there people he was working with to attempt to get weapons from? somebody else who may be involved in planning with him to launch some other attacks. this is going to be wide ranging. they'll certainly follow all logical leads to try and determine the full extent of this. but right now law enforcement is concerned because of social media that is constantly battering people with these messages to go out and launch these attacks. so those that have been inspired historically through the web are now being bantered by social media, twitter, et cetera. it's causing huge concern for law enforcement and the fbi. >> all right, shawn henry. thanks so much. we appreciate it. >> this whole issue is front and center in washington. president obama signed landmark legislation late last night that

reinstates but limits controversial programs in place since 9/11. senior white house correspondent chris jansing is following this story. good morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this morning the intelligence community began firing up the computers and restarting what they say are critical spy programs aimed at suspected terrorists. but the legislation signed by president obama also significantly scales back a program that was put into place after 9/11 where the government collected phone records in bulk. those will now be kept by the phone companies. and to search them the government has to petition a federal court. the entire system was shut down after a bitter fight on the senate floor. at the heart of the debate national security versus privacy. president obama pushed for the bill he calls it sensible reform. >> and as you mention, this is such a bitter political fight. we saw strange alliances from

washington in the midst of this. >> reporter: yeah. even by washington standards. and this was an em passioned fight as you say. after it was over mitch mcconnell who had fought scaling back the program called it a resounding victory for those plotting against our homeland. rand paul still considers this scaled back bill a gross invasion of privacy that hasn't stopped any attacks. and then something that rarely happened you had a republican house speaker on the same side as the president. but the bill did pass overwhelmly in the senate just as it did in the house. let us turn to china now where this morning hundreds of rescuers are joining frantic efforts to reach 420 people who are still trapped inside a capsized cruise ship. but nearly two days after that accident hope of finding survivors is beginning to dim. nbc's eunice yoon is at the

site. >> reporter: so far the weather bureau has confirmed that a tornado did strike in the area where the ferry went down. this morning desperate rescue efforts are still underway along the hull of the capsized vessel. though the signs of life and screams for help are no longer heard. now the rescuers have put it in a fixed position. they are working around the clock to see if there's anyone alive inside. they are facing very challenging conditions. low visibility very murky waters. officials are describing it as china's worst maritime disaster in decades. the ship on a cruise up the yangtze river was hit by a severe storm monday night. these pictures the last of the eastern star were taken by a passing vessel. it quickly capsized and sank. as of this morning, only 14 people have been found alive. more than 400 are missing. survivors were being treated in

a nearby hospital amid reports relatives are growing impatient with the rescue effort. i'm at the staging area for the rescue operations. the rescuers here having battling heavy rains and murky waters in the hopes of finding anyone else alive. >> eunice yoon on the scene, thank you so much. now following a terrible crash in florida. >> that's right. this morning an investigation underway in jacksonville where an amtrak train split a car in half. amazingly though as you see the story, no one was seriously injured. kerry sanders has the very latest. >> reporter: it doesn't get much closer than this. dramatic surveillance video shows the moment a car carrying three people was sliced in half by an amtrak train. >> when i turned around the back of the car wasn't there. >> reporter: edward peterson was

in the passenger seat. his pregnant girlfriend was in the back. she was ejected when the train hit. >> all i could think about was my girl so i jumped out to find her. >> reporter: miraculously they were both okay suffering minor injuries. and the driver of the car 21-year-old stacy peterson jr. was also okay. the officer said he admitted he drove around the railroad arms. there were no injuries on the train and after a four-hour delay it continued on to miami. the driver's father says the fact that no one was killed was a god-sent miracle. and he hopes it's a lesson for his son. >> maybe he'll learn from it and slow down not go crossing when the arms are down. >> reporter: kerry sanders, nbc news, miami. a frightening scene in chicago tuesday where a bus crash left one person dead and at least eight injured. it happened during the evening rush hour. the bus collide with several vehicles then jumped the curb

hitting at least one pedestrian. a 51-year-old woman was killed and eight people suffered non-life threatening injuries. no passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash. a scary scene at the french open on tuesday when a large piece of sheet metal fell onto spectators in the stand. the incident was captured on camera. look at the high winds blew that metal down to the seats below. that piece also happened to be covered in spikes to deter birds. amazingly only one spectator suffered minor injuries. the match was delayed for about 30 minutes. lucky situation there for sure. a helmet camera captured the terrifying moments when a skier fell into a crevice while skiing in the swiss alps. he was skiing down a glacier when the ground opened up and he fell 15 feet into it. he screamed as loud as he could for help but he thought it would

go unheard because of the thick snow there. he was trapped for 30 minutes. and he too, was okay. good news day. a young baseball fan got a ride on tuesday night on the emotional roller coaster that comes with cheering on your favorite team. the hometown tigers were ahead in the seventh inning. that was until oakland a's ben zobrist hit a grand slam home run. the ball lands right into the hands of a young tigers fan. and the boy was initially really excited because he caught the souvenir. but then he realizes that this means his team is now behind. so as you see, he burst into tears. it's inconsolable. fans tried to cheer him up but to no avail. poor guy. i feel your pain. tigers ended up losing to the a's 5-3. >> that's why you bring a baseball glove to the game. it's a great catch. >> not a ball you want to keep

>> all right, dylan. thank you. we've been talking a lot this week about government surveillance. there's a stunning new revelation adding to the conversation this morning. the fbi is overseeing planes that fly over many u.s. cities armed with video equipment and in some cases able to lock in on your cell phone. national correspondent peter alexander is following this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you said it. just as surveillance has been getting scrutiny this week these new revelations that the top enforcement agency is flying hundreds of planes with advanced surveillance capabilities. most registered to companies with fake names. and while the fbi insists all of this is legal many americans are now wondering just who's watching. as baltimore boiled over this spring most people here had their eyes on the streets. but benjamin shane was looking up. >> it was dark out. i saw the lights flashing on the plane and i saw it bank. and a couple minutes later, it

came back around. >> reporter: shane took to twitter. anyone know who's been flying the light plane in circles? just minutes later someone tweeted back this map showing that plane registered to the same owner as this single engine cessna. it turned out to be a fleet of planes operated by the fbi. according to to an associated press investigation, they're all equipped with cameras that can capture images like this and are often outfitted with cell phone tracking devices. in just the past month the ap reports the fbi has flown more than 100 surveillance flights over 30 cities in 11 states. all intended to zero in on criminals. but privacy addsvocates are asking where does it stop. >> it seems strange the fbi has such a large fleet of aircraft they're using so frequently that they're trying to hide them from the public. >> reporter: the planes are registered under 13 fake company names. local law enforcement agencies

have long used helicopters and drones to monitor for criminal activity. but according to the ap the cell phone tracking capabilities on some of the planes allows them to scoop up identifying information that can help trace a phone's owner from all mobile devices below. >> i can assure you the fbi is not doing widespread massive surveillance on first amendment protected activities. there is a particular purpose and a lawful purpose. >> reporter: we reached out to the fbi and they sent us a statement stresing that the aviation program is not a secret and is used in their words for targeting specific jindividuals and not bulk surveillance. >> thank you very much. >> every once in awhile on this program we make a mistake, right? and we correct it. there was a mistake made this morning, carson that -- not on our show. somewhere else. it's getting a lot of attention. >> it is. it's remarkable too. a series of tweets sent out by a bbc journalist caused quite the

usually pay more than men? today our rossen reports team goes undercover to find out. let's begin this half hour with the american woman who was attacked and killed by a lion at a south african wildlife park. that woman has now been identified. her family and friends remembering her this morning. nbc's katy tur has the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the victim was a 29-year-old woman named katherine chappell originally from new york. she was a visual effects editor for "game of thrones" who was in south africa trying to help protect animals from poachers. this morning 29-year-old katherine chappell is being mourned by family and friends identified as the victim of that deadly lion attack outside johannesburg. chappell a visual effects editor on the emmy award winning show "game of thrones" was in south africa to raise money for animal conservation. the american originally from rye, new york was in vancouver

posting pictures taking off from canada to johannesburg. at lion park despite sign after sign warning visitors to keep windows shut chappell and her male guide had them wide open. taking pictures of cats like these, one only three feet away when it suddenly lunged. >> these are wild animals. most of them were born in captivity, but they're not tame. >> reporter: the attacking lion lioness will not be put down. the mark remains open and insists it is safe so long as visitors follow the rules. meanwhile back in the u.s. chappell's sister broke the news to friends on facebook writing, katie was a brilliant, kind adventurous, and high-spirited woman. her energy and passion could not be contained by mere continents ofr or oceans. she was very much loved and shared her love for life with those she met. chappell's male driver is a man

believe rahim was preparing to attack police in boston within the next few days. a new study in the british medical journal strongly suggests a link between childhood bullying and adult depression. found that those who experienced frequent bullying at the age of 13 were nearly three times more likely to experience depression by the age of 18 than those who were not bullied. for more we're joined now by clinical psychologist jennifer hartstein. these numbers get your attention. are they surprising to you sfp. >> they're not surprising at all. we know it affects self-esteem, self-confidence. it will impact us as adults. >> this is not cause and effect. this is not saying if you were bullied as a teen then you're going to end up as a depressed adult. >> this is similar to family history, similar to any other risk factors we have to think about in childhood. bullying is another one.

country but then both were paralyzed in tragic accidents. both had a ground breaking new surgery with the dream of possibly walking again one day. but that's not the most unbelievable part. before she could even reach the pedals jesse wanted to go fast. >> i went from toy jeeps to go carts. >> reporter: by 17 she was a professional racer. and you were really good at it. >> oh, gosh, yeah. >> reporter: but this january the 22-year-old was involved in a terrible car accident while riding on the back of a friend's motorcycle. >> the last thing i remember was the impact. >> reporter: she woke up a week later in the hospital paralyzed from the chest down. while she was unconscious, her family allowed doctors to do an experimental surgery. she was only the second person in the world to receive it. 26-year-old jordan was the first. he was paralyzed last october in arizona while trying a back flip on a dirt bike.

>> and i just ended up driving myself into the dirt. >> reporter: since jordan was already recovering jesse reached out to him. at first they just texted about their injuries. you're texts at first were probably pretty -- >> we kept it professional. >> reporter: then they're conversations got more personal. >> when i found out that his was a back flip i was like gosh back flip on a dirt bike that's my kind of guy. our facetime dates became nightly. i've never connected with somebody on a level i do with him. it's my fairy tale. get paralyzed and fall in love. >> oh, hey. >> hey. >> reporter: it looks like they've known each other forever, but actually they only met in person two months ago. >> he rolled up behind me, we iss kissed and it was like welcome home. >> reporter: the surgery they both had inserts a biodegradable device into a wound in the

by saturday a nice start to the weekend. temperatures back at 80 degrees. >> and that's your latest forecast. >> thank you so much. this morning on start today, your summer shapeup. we kicked off the week with jean's savings tips. and tuesday joy cooked up healthy recipes. today jenna wolfe is here with getting your body ready for the beach. good morning. >> good morning. we're starting with the age old question when it comes to losing weight what is more important diet or exercise? well there's research suggesting that one of them actually doesn't matter. so as we get ready to bare the summer bodies is it good news for people who want to eat whatever they want or people who hate to work out? diet and exercise. the two have long been an inseparable pair. when it comes to losing weight what is more important? diet or exercise? >> honestly i think it's equivalent. you have to do both of them.

>> i don't think you can really say one is more important than the other. >> both. i would always do both. >> reporter: but consider this. last year americans spent an estimated $24.2 billion on gym memberships. and the fitness bracelets, market analysts estimate 60 million of us will be wearing them by the year 2018. yet still nearly seven out of ten adults in this country are overweight or obese. so is the exercise part of this marriage really pulling its weight? >> at the end of the day if you're worried about weight, you need to control how much you eat. calories do count. >> reporter: recently "the washington post" took that notion further with the headline take off that fitbit. exercise alone won't make you lose weight. citing several studies that found exercise wasn't needed to lose weight. and just to triple check, we asked a sports medicine physician and fitness instructor. >> if your only goal is getting

skinny eating less will make you skinny. >> reporter: that's going to make a lot of people happy. okay then. toss the weights. sayonara step tracker. who needs the gym? wait, wait wait. hold on. play the rest of his sentence first. >> if your only goal is getting skinny eating less will make you skinny. if your goal is to be healthy, the key is to move and exercise. i'd much rather you be a little bit overweight and active than very thin and inactive. the health is with activity. >> reporter: so it's not exercise or diet. you would say -- >> it's exercise and diet together. >> reporter: and it has to be. >> it has to be to make it work. >> reporter: one reason it doesn't always work experts say, is a common misconception. a lot of people fear the more they exercise the more they can eat. that's not true. you wanted to lose weight and only focus on the exercise, you'd have to do the kind of exercises someone like michael phelps or any other professional athlete are going to take it to

the next level. it becomes in essence a job. >> as a nutritionist would you tell someone you don't need to work out, just focus on your food? >> as a human being i would never tell somebody not to work out. >> reporter: the diet and exercise tandem works just fine. what does exercise do for us? >> exercise will lower your blood pressure your cholesterol, make your bones stronger reduce your risk of breast cancer and colon cancer make you sleep better. most of these things alone diet don't do. >> if i just exercise i feel eh. and if i just eat well i feel eh. it's the combination that makes me wake up and feel refreshed and focus and healthy and happy. >> okay. so as a certified personal trainer myself you didn't really think i was going to let you get away without exercise did you? >> no. >> in case you've forgotten and need a summer reboot if i took everything i knew about fitness and put it into four tips these are the four tips to get you back into shape. number one, drink 20 sips of

water first thing in the morning. that's going to get your body ready. >> why gulp it? >> i want sips. number two, keep a food diary. if you write down everything you day. you will hold yourself accountable. i promise you. number three, no carbs after 6:00 p.m. simple carbohydrates. >> what about pudding? >> as long as it's not white, you're okay. no pudding. and last but not least -- >> 10,000 steps. >> it's not as hard as you think but it's also a little bit more than you're used to so it's going to keep your body moving. so coming up next week i'm going to show you some workouts for specific trouble spots from top to bottom. i'll tell you how to tackle them. and to get tips from me every week sign up for my news letter. maybe no pudding now that i think about it. no pudding. >> thank you so much.

we're back at 8:40. today marks one year since joan london was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. we're going to talk to joan in a moment but first hoda's been following joan's journey. >> hard to believe it's been one year. she became a special correspondent for pink power. she remains a source of strength to a lot of us, to millions out there. ♪

>> reporter: one year ago joan london was diagnosed with breast cancer. >> it's is a shame you have to go through something that almost takes life away to appreciate it more. >> reporter: her mammogram was clean, but an ultrasound picked up the tumor. she had aggressive stage 2 triple negative breast cancer. her initial treatment included 12 rounds of toxic chemotherapy and then a lumpectomy. in a brave move our friend joan london appeared bold and bald on the cover of "people" magazine. >> we're doing this. we're losing our hair in order to live and survive and be there for our families. >> pink power! >> reporter: last fall to raise awareness for breast cancer joan tamron and i joined 100 women for our pink power on the plaza. >> we are at the radiation center for my very last dose of

radiation. >> reporter: after four more rounds of chemotherapy and radiation every day for six weeks, this winter her treatment came to an emotional end. >> a very kind of mixed set of emotions with the last day. and kind of re-entering normal again. >> joan good morning. great to see you. >> great to be here. >> the two of you are crying. but these are tears of joy. >> yeah. >> talk to me about how you're doing. how do you feel? >> i'm doing well. i'm feeling great. i'm not back to my old self. if you think you can go through nine months of treatment, rigorous chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation every day and just bounce right back you know i'd like to think that happens, but it doesn't. >> it's obviously affecting you emotionally as we're sitting here this minute. is it looking back and watching what you went through or is it something you're feeling right now inside about where you are?

>> because this show -- you know i went from being the patient, kind of a victim to bag warrior and fighting for my own survival to being a survivor and now an advocate. i made that turn into advocacy here right out here on that plaza with all those women out there. and then the response that i got online from this program just bowled me over. i heard everybody's complaints frustrations their road blocks what they needed what they weren't being able to find. i said i've got to step up and do something. >> can you just describe the feeling of hearing no evidence of the disease. >> ned. you know where i learned that? from somebody on twitter. they said pretty soon you're going to be n.e.d. no evidence of disease. >> there are some physical

things you obviously want to see changing. you have a wig on. >> yes. >> and your hair is under there. it's starting to make its way. >> it's someone else's hair. it's weird. >> it is. it's curly. thank god i've gone to races and been involved in all the survivor things because that's when you talk to other women. they say it grows back coarse and a different color. it's like someone else's hair growing on my head. >> yeah. that's your real hair right there? >> yes. that was last weekend. >> look at you sporting it. >> yeah. i'm like it's grown out a little bit. that was the first time i ever took it off out in public. i was with the kids on rides. >> did it feel free to do that? >> weird. free but still weird. i'm going to be honest. >> so fortunate you have a family that's been there the whole way. work has been really important to you. you started an online channel. >> today. >> yeah. you want to be out there. >> i've been going to washington and i'm not going as a

walk ten feet to get a beer when you can have ten of them in front of you? >> i'm there for the lazy people of the world. >> you don't have to get up to get your beer. >> cost for the project? >> hundred bucks for the table then another 30 bucks and bit of your time. >> this is called the massage seat. this is perfect. this isn't a swing, per se. this is actually an outdoor bed or lounging space. i love the fact you take an old palette palette. cut it to the size you want. >> i made it nice and close so if you want to be the creepy guy and don't want her to shuffle away. >> you said creepy. >> is this strong enough for both of us? >> oh yeah. you can put them from a tree or your own frame. that is the one thing to warn anybody that wants to do this. be careful if you have kids in the yard. it is not meant to be a swing.

took some pvc, put the bigger pieces in there and made a frame for your canvas. and it flops in there. this all collapses down and can store away in the garage. hundred bucks for the whole project. and i picked this projector up for 120 bucks. >> i didn't know you can get a projector anymore. my gosh. >> nice and simple. >> not appropriate to show "50 shades of grey" in your back yard. so this is fantastic. break this down so you don't have to keep it out. >> keep it all in the bucket there. pack it away. >> do you have to cut it smaller? >> i actually -- i put the grommets on it myself. then you can tie it as tight as you want. over time it will stretch. tighten the rope a bit more and keep it taut. >> that 16 by 9 ratio? >> it depends. if you're going wide screen. she doesn't know about a projector but she knows this. >> it was in the notes. thank you so much.

temperatures at dover at 56 degrees and you can see the showers right now mainly confined to the southern parts of delaware and into parts of cape may and as we head into the rest of today, we'll keep our temperatures close to the shore a bit cooler in the mid-60s. closer to the 70s in allentown and our suburbs to the north of the city. jury deliberations continue in the trial of marcel johnson. a man accused of killing a pregnant woman and her 4-year-old daughter. prosecutors say johnson set the fire to destroy evidence. he could face the death penalty, if convicted. one person was hurt in the house fire in atlantic county overnight. in pleasantville on charles avenue. the victim was taken to the hospital with burns and smoke inhalation. and we just learned in the last half hour that two mega million players in our area each won a million dollars in last night's drawing. lottery officials say a ticket in new jersey and a ticket in

few minutes. that movie is intense. >> i watched the original for the first time this week. >> first time? >> i did. it was on a cable channel and i watched it. it's really still good. some films you watch, like i did "ghost busters" recently and was like -- >> whoa whoa whoa. >> al's not here. >> but that little blob thing looks kind of corny. >> slimer. >> i did not appreciate it as much as i would have i'm sure, in the '80s when it came out. but "jurassic park" was so good. it hold up. >> now 22 years later the technology and the graphics that's come along. speaking of incredible, we have some video to tell you. all three people in this car survived. how we don't know. watch this. a car was hit by an amtrak train yesterday. this is security camera footage in jacksonville, florida.

car literally sliced in half. this train was moving from new york to miami as it passed through jacksonville there. looks like the driver just made it across just enough to spare a full broadside. look at that. literally cut in half. a pregnant woman in the back seat was thrown from the car when it hit the train. luckily the mother to be, her boyfriend in the passenger seat, and the driver all okay. obviously taken to the hospital but they're going to be all right. the sheriff's office tweeted the driver admitted he drove around the railroad arms at crossing and tried to beat the train across. >> thank goodness they're alive and thank goodness all the passengers on that train, the train did not derail, everybody's okay. but this could have been a horrific situation for so many more people than just the three people in that car. >> what could have been that important in your life that you needed to go and try to skirt around that? growing up in texas, you could see people when you're younger

go around. what is the point? i don't know. >> people tell you all the time -- there's a reason you see all of these train accidents. you see all of the stories like this where this happens. fortunately in this case it didn't end up as badly as it could have been. >> had a little investigation on the scene and the train after four hours kept moving. >> and reportedly the driver was fined only about $300 for endangering so many people. >> they're all okay. >> remember that song by rockwell "i feel like someone's watching me". >> that's a good jam. ♪ i always feel like somebody's watching me ♪ >> well, they might be. according to the associated press, they're reporting serious business. in the past month the fbi has flown more than 100 surveillance flights over 30 cities in 11 different states. now according to the report or

what the fbi says, this is their plan or catch or zero in on criminals. but according to the ap, these planes are registered under at least 13 fake companies. they created, like, shell companies to disguise the owners which is the government. they're all equipped with surveillance cameras. they're often outfitted with cell phone tracking devices. the fbi told us the program is not secret except for you probably only heard about it from this ap report. it's used for targeting, they say specific individuals and not bulk collection activities or mass surveillance which is in the news and currently a huge legislative cite happening on capitol hill in light of what edward snowden revealed about the nsa. with that said, what does privacy mean anymore? >> doesn't feel like there's much of it. what's fascinating about the planes, they turn themselves into cell towers so wherever they are they can listen and tap

into people's calls. >> which if you're doing nothing wrong -- >> i don't want anyone listening if i'm not doing anything wrong. privacy matters. >> price matters i agree completely. but i think there's also reason, you know, therny were able to find these guys in boston yesterday. and figure out the one guy they shot and killed in boston was possibly of the brink of carrying out an isis-inspired attack against police officers. >> but those specifically targeted -- >> and they were surveilled over months. >> how this was discovered was during the baltimore riots this man saw this plane going around and he went online anybody else see this plane? and through that it was discovered. so to your point, there's a balance between our security but as american citizens, our right to privacy and not to feel that someone at any point has the

branches. they say it could save them about $3.2 million. >> how is that possible? >> that's a lot of money for their voice mail technology. >> i think they said it's 10 bucks a month per phone per voice mail. so if we just get rid of it. athathded it up, it was $3 million. >> they don't have a bulk plan? >> you would think. right? the ceo says barely anyone uses voice mail now. we talked about coca-cola disconnecting their voice mail so employees could use alternative methods of missed call or text messages. >> what do you think, though, of -- i was thinking if you left someone a voice mail and they said i didn't get it. i'm so intrigued by people who assume you received it and you don't reply. and a week later, i sent you the e-mail.

we begin this morning with break news from the pocono mountains. two people are dead. at least 17 others are hurt after a bus crashed head on with a tractor trailer on i-380 in monroe county north of mount pocono. you're looking a t a shot from a traffic camera that's posted there. the northbound lanes of 380 are now closed. sky force ten has been launched. it's on its way to the scene. we have limited information. the northbound lanes of i-380 are shut down because of this deadly bus crash. two people are dead. 17 others are hurt.
