i don't watch horse racing during the year but the triple crown is big. >> you've got to get excited. >> we'll have more on that. let's get to today's top story. it's a trail of destruction from violent storms in colorado. al's here with more on that. >> there was an area we were going to see bring severe weather and it came. as you can see one tornado touching down. upwards of eight tornadoes that we know of have touched down in colorado overnight. two dozen homes and businesses destroyed. look at some of the damage we're talking about. roofs ripped off homes, massive flooding. and we've got some amazing video of hail to show you. you hear the hail there. take a look at some of the hail. they were literally shoveling hail in denver, colorado. amazeing stuff. uptowards of 6 inches of hail

that deep causing big problems. and we've got more severe weather to talk about this morning. as you can see right now, strong storms firing. this is the same system that came out of colorado now threatening kansas city. it had been raining there all night along with heavy thunderstorms. this is the area we look at for a slight risk. 20 million people could see hail damaging winds, isolated tornadoes. we move into tomorrow. we have an enhanced risk from iowa on into nebraska. 17 million people at risk for damaging winds, hail 2 inches in diameter or more and continues into sunday from denver to indiana. 55 million people at risk. we're not going to say tornado outbreaks but there is the possibility as we move into the weekend. >> we'll come back to you in a second al. >> thank you. now to the massive and extremely sophisticated hack that is rocking the federal government this morning. the victims, at least 4 million

current and former federal employees. the finger pointing well underway. the white house pointing to china. andrea mitchell has the latest. andrea good morning to you. >> good morning. this is believed to be the biggest cyber attack in american history. targeting 4.2 million current and former government employees. and who did it? u.s. officials tell nbc news most likely it's china. today the government is scrambling after a massive hack into personal information. names, social security numbers, birthdays. for millions of current and former government workers. if proved from china, the u.s. will likely retaliate. >> there are all sorts of ways we can retaliate both through diplomatic means and perhaps by giving whoever is behind this if we can determine that for certain a taste of their own medicine. >> reporter: the government is telling employees to monitor their bank accounts and offering identity theft insurance and

free credit reports. after the hack into the personal management that warned of a threat in april. >> in an average month, 2.5 billion confirmed attempts to hack its network. these attacks will not stop. if anything, they will increase. >> reporter: this comes after north korea hacked into sony. and russia hacked into the irs and the white house, reading president obama's e-mail. >> the cyber world is the wild wild west. to some degree we're asked to be the sheriff. >> reporter: the fbi is pointing to china which in the past has hacked into government computers from this military building in shanghai. officials say it could have been prevented if a new system had been installed governmentwide. hours before the committee. >> it's possible to root out these threats from overseas and foreign hackers and do it in a way that does not violate the rights of law-abiding americans.

>> reporter: a spokesman at china's embassy tells nbc news quote, jumping to conclusions and making hypothetical accusations is not responsible and counterproductive. so far they don't think the hackers got the crown jewels. >> all right, andrea mitchell. thanks very much. michael leiter is keeping a close eye on this. he's the former director of the national counterterrorism center. michael, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> so we know the scope of it. about 4.2 million current and former federal employees. but do we really know anything about the motive? is it possible this is commercial hacking? or is this espionage? >> it's certainly possible this is commercial hacking. identities and social securities can be sold widely and broadly on the black market and can be very profitable. early indications are this came

from china. and that sort of cyber espionage for china is not very common. china has used cyber tools for economic espionage, but a different source of stealing social security numbers. early indications would suggest that this is a deeper strategic move by china for espionage rather than just economic gain. >> so you answered my next question. when we say its origin is china, that could mean an entity within china. almost a geographic identification but you're saying it's state sponsored? >> more likely than not. we don't see enormous numbers of attacks like this against u.s. government institutions coming from china that are not government sponsored. now, what part of the government of china still too early to say, but the u.s. is actually remarkably good now at doing forensics, identifying not just what part of china it came from but often the individuals

involved. because they leave fingerprints just like you would in any other criminal act. >> perhaps more troubling, if this is not the first time the office of personnel management hacked last year. there had been breaches at the white house and state department. is the lesson here when you find a hole or someone else finds it and you plug it they find another hole? >> that's exactly right, matt. this is cat and mouse. every time the chinese or someone else find a way in and we patch that that adversary looks for another way to get in and get the information valuable to them. this is an effort to fight back those attackers and find other tools of national security to hopefully deter this activity which is clearly very damaging. >> always good to talk to you. thanks very much. an intense manhunt is underway in colorado this morning after several shootings within a few miles of each other in denver. two people have died another wounded. police now fear they may have a serial shooter on their hands.

nbc's jacob rascon has more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: savannah good morning. these otherwise safe and quiet communities have been rocked by this series of shootings. the fbi has now joined a task force promising unprecedented manpower and resources to catch the person or people responsible. >> he's bleeding uncontrollably on the side of the road. >> reporter: this morning the fbi local law enforcement are desperately searching for what they fear may be a serial shooter targeting northern colorado. >> help us look. keep your eyes open. pay attention in your neighborhoods. >> reporter: the first victim survived her attack shot in the neck in april. other drivers in the area reported shattered windows but no injuries. several weeks later jon jaycoby

was shot. formed a task force and offered a reward. then on wednesday night, 65-year-old grandfather bill connole was gunned down while walking near his home. >> there is no positive link between this new investigation and the two other cases being investigated by the task force, but there is -- we have not been able to rule out a link either. >> reporter: three roadside attacks in six weeks. the crime scenes just several miles apart. investigators in colorado now counting or the public to help them stop a killer who they hope isn't just getting started. the investigation picks up this morning. investigators are offering a $10 thourkss $10,000 reward hoping the public comes through again. it is going to be another

emotional scene in delaware today as more public services are held for beau biden. the casket of the iraq war veteran and former state attorney general lay as mourners paid their respects to the family. kelly o'donnell has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the bidens will spend this day with their faith community at their roman catholic parish in wilmington delaware. they will receive friends and mourners there. for a grieving vice president, he was in certain moments so solitary. despite this very public ceremony the flag draped casket the final journey home for his oldest son. beau biden, just 46 when he died from brain cancer last weekend had served as delaware's attorney general. >> the biden family is delaware's family.

peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that man's name is jordan wallace. he had only worked for mr. savopoulos for a short time before the murders here. but this morning the police have looked to find whether there is any evidence linking him to those awful attacks. this is jordan wallace, savvas savopoulos savopoulos' personal assistant. the former race car driver speaking about go carts here. >> they are highly lyly lyly engineered. >> reporter: police discovered jordan wallace's car parked a block away from the savopoulos mansion after the fire. investigators searched it after police say wallace changed his account about when he was told to get the ransom money. among the items they were looking for, cash money wrappers and friendsic and physical evidence related to the murders. the 28-year-old has not been named as a suspect or charged.

more than three weeks later the savopoulos savopoulos' mansion remains a crime scene. spent more than two hours taking information and pictures. wint remains in custody. robin ficker represents wint. "the washington post" reports after delivering the ransom wallace was in northern virginia when he learned about the fire from somebody at american ironworks. wallace texted amy savopoulos write, are you okay if so you need to get home. i got a call your house is on fire. by that time police say, the family was already dead. also seized from inside jordan wallace's car, two backpacks, fast food receipts and swabs from inside the vehicle as well

as pieces of the car included armrest handles. >> still such a mystery. peter, thank you. lawyers for the family of usaamah rahim are asking for calm after his fatal shooting this week. he's the man kused of planning to attack police officers. rahim's family members are in boston for his burial today. the family spoke to nbc news after watching the video that shows what happened as rahim was approached then shot by boston police and the fbi. >> it's hard to look at that. and it was painful. and there were tears and there was a lot of emotions in the room. you know our prayers, we lift them for him. >> officials say rahim came at the officers with a knife as they backed away and wouldn't drop it. but the family lawyers say the tape isn't details enough to show what he was holding. it was a late finish for the east coast, but an exciting one

in the nba finals. lebron james' 44 points not enough to get a win for cleveland in game one. the cavs had a chance to beat golden state at the end of regulation but both james and shumpert missed shots in the final seconds. and in overtime it was all the warriors. the cavs managed only one basket. golden state takes game one 108-100. game two this sunday. exciting weekend in sports for sure. and an update now on a story we've been following on "today." the plan to use a fake killer whale to scare off sea lions from a coastal oregon town got off to a rough start on thursday. the mission was delayed by engine trouble but eventually the orca took to the water, but things then only got worse. the fake whale tipped over on its way to the dock where the sea lions lounge. >> and laughed. >> yes, they probably did laugh.

drought. >> reporter: me and you and millions more. good morning to you. as you mentioned all eyes in the sports world, millions more in fact will be here tomorrow for about two and a half minutes. roughly 15 miles east of you there in new york city. a horse named american pharoah who you probably heard a lot about tries to join a most exclusive lists along the likes of secretariat and war admiral. to become the first to win this the triple crown. on the first saturday in may, american pharoah captured the kentucky derby. with a gritty performance against what many called the most talented derby field in decades. two weeks later in baltimore, he overcame a deluge to win the preakness in convincing fashion. >> american pharoah and victor espinoza have won the preakness! >> reporter: now just one win from history, he'll have to run in the longest race of his life.

a mile and a half. over one of the sport's toughest tracks. one they call big sandy. but while american pharoah heads into uncharted territory, his human connections are no strangers to this grant stage. his trainer bob baffert has been here three times before winning the first two jewels of the triple crown only to come up short at the belmont. victor espinoza his name sounds familiar because he rode california chrome to this very same doorstep of history just a year ago. both part of an unlucky club. 13 horses since 1978 have won the derby and preakness before falling short of the triple crown. and if american pharoah bucks almost four decades of history, he'll have to fend off many fresh contenders including

happened? >> there's a statute in arkansas permitting the abuse of a minor. once the parent becomes aware there's an abuser in the home the parents could be held criminally responsible. the statute of limitations has run on that crime too. >> we heard mr. duggar say we weren't mandatory reporters. we aren't wired by law to report this. >> and that's true. that applies to teachers nurses doctors. but parents always have a legal obligation to protect their own children from a known abuse ir. >> you watched this interview. what did you make of it? what did you make of what they had to say? >> in 2002, 2003 they circled around to protect josh duggar. now in 2015 they're doing the same thing. where's josh duggar? he hasn't spoken out. he's at the center of this. >> though we did hear from his sisters who identified themselves as some of the victims here. and they're saying we feel victimized by this process. the fact our names are now out

back now at 7:41. this has been a great series. natalie looking into "my kid would never do that." this morning a temptation your kids might have a hard time passing up. >> this is a modern twist on the old stranger danger story of offering kids candy. this time we're talking about a mobile video game truck. they can certainly be irresistible to kids. in fact it's a very real danger. a florida man was recently convicted of luring two teenage boys into a truck and then assaulting them. so for this test we found some parents who wanted to know if their unsuspecting kids might follow a stranger inside one. >> reporter: it's a frightening but realistic scenario. a dark arcade on wheels. predators have used them before. so we've rented a video game truck to find out if kids will follow a complete stranger in this case our actor inside. this is 14-year-old jason.

>> happy birthday nat. >> thank you. >> cheers. >> early champagne on friday. >> that's tomorrow. another big event happening in this area tomorrow the belmont stakes. can american pharoah become the first triple crown winner in 37 years? josh elliot is down at belmont park. josh we talked so much this morning about american pharoah, let's also talk about some of the other competitors. >> reporter: you mentioned the fresh horses. that's become the crisis of conscious in the sport. these horses that will not run the derby or preakness before ending in the belmont. and the two horses you want to keep your eyes on are frosted and materiality. those are, in fact two horses that did run in the derby. they finished fourth and sixth respectively. neither horse ran in the preakness. so they've had the better part of a month off. they will be lying in wait.

they are rested while american pharoah will be running his fourth race in eight weeks. so it is a true test. but again, if the triple crown was easy they'd win it every year. american pharoah regardless remains a very worthy favorite. >> and talk about that josh. you told us earlier that some of the other trainers think if anyone's going to do it it's american pharoah. what is so special about this horse. >> reporter: while i am low to put any horses comparing to secretariat, arguably the greatest horse of all time i will tell you this. secretariat's stride was measured at 22 feet per stride. american pharoah's was coming in around 24 feet per stride. as one trainer told me he -- this horse breathes different air. this is a potentially transcendent racehorse. there is nothing to really suggest he won't show up again. he's won all of these races

minutes. >> spent a half hour taking pictures and talking to people. actually doing the selfies. >> it'll be fun to talk to her. the big talk of this weekend, though the triple crown. can american pharoah do it? tomorrow running at the belmont stakes american pharoah would be the first triple crown winner in 37 years. it was 1978 that affirms did it. in the last 37 years, 13 horses have won the kentucky derby and the preakness but then failed to close the deal at the belmont. the jockey is victor espinoza very successful jockey. this is such a hard thing to do. i mean this is -- actually "wired" magazine wrote why it's so hard physically for the horses to do these three just in erm it is of rest and recovery. there's a reason it hasn't happened in 37 years. the reason these horses who haven't run one or both of the previous two races, that makes it easier. >> they're fresh horses with fresh legs.

game truck that is really hard to resist far lot of kids. and this is such a real test. in fact a florida man was convicted of luring two teen boys into one of these kinds of video game trucks and assaulting them. you remember three years ago i tested my son josh with the ice cream truck. now he's at that age, he's 11 years old. video game truck is something so enticing. he was with his friend hudson and his friend malcolm in that test. so this is such an important test. we were going around the country doing this with other parents and their kids. i had to ask myself what would josh do? so you know what? i'm going to test josh again and find out. i want to make sure he really learned his lesson. so take a look at this little clip. >> as our actor waits, we've arranged for josh and hudson to run an errand on a street they're allowed to walk down alone. it's nerve-racking. as they approach the video game truck our actor makes his move.

learn the lesson. >> the clip you showed in the earlier hour i was watching it. the boy who went inside the van after his parents -- how old was he? >> i think he was 14 years old. he was in there for over ten minutes. and the guy closed the door. >> sitting there next to him. >> it's a dark truck. >> frightening. >> it is. he could have driven that truck off and i'm not even sure jason is the name of the boy would have even noticed. >> how sad did he look when his parents said you went inside and you see his face the regret. but it could have been too late. >> such an important lesson. and the whole idea is that kids learn so much. all of the kids who participate in this series and we have three others coming up as well over the next couple of weeks, but all of the parents and kids say this is so great because we feel we learn sod much such a valuable lesson. and they wanted other kids to learn and their parents to have this ability to show their kids as well. we thank them for that. >> you want to make sure they
