we begin with meteorologist brittney shipp and our first alert forecast. it will be a mild start. as we head into the afternoon, temperatures will push above average. we are tracking thunderstorms as you head home from work. there's a live look outside now. quiet conditions for us. as we take a closer look at our current temperatures, mid-60s in philadelphia, 60 degrees in washington township, 65 in allentown, 58 in the poconos. 61 in beach haven, 57 degrees in woodbine woodbine. temperatures going to push into the 70s by 9:00 a.m. by noon 78 degrees. if you take a look at today's forecast, you're going to see warm conditions between 83 and 86 degrees, afternoon and evening showers expected and even storms. i'll break down the timing of everything coming up in ten minutes. for now we check in with first alert traffic report jessica

car hits him. the 17-year-old football star is a rising senior. the spot on the road where kyle was hit is now marked with a line of spray paint. police are looking for a hyundai elantra with front end damage. kyle went through hours of surgery yesterday. his loved ones spent the entire day at his bedside. >> we'd like to thank pennsville for all your support for kyle. he's in critical condition. we ask you to respect the family with peace and give kyle time to please heal. >> reporter: kyle's friends and neighbors say he's a fighter. they're demanding the driver do the right thing and turn him or herself in. the high school's athletic department released this statement, police keep kyle and his family in your thoughts during this critical time. the family understands and appreciates everyone's concern for kyle and is extremely thankful there's been such an outpouring of support. speaking of support, we have learned that students today at

the high school will wear blue one of the school's officials colors to honor kyle. nbc 10's katy zachry is on her way to the school. she'll have an update live in the next half hour. live in our digital operations center tracy davidson nbc 10 news. this philadelphia teenager was hit and killed by a car that ran a stop sign last night this morning, the driver is under arrest suspected of being drunk behind the wheel. 17-year-old adelso matos. >> the guy went through the stop sign, hit him, he flew over the windshield and he was lay on the floor. >> he needed cpr. everybody move did my job, tried to do the best i could and i couldn't keep up with him. >> matos passed away police arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of dui.

we'll update you and let you know if and when charns are filed in matos's death. 4:05. happening later today in delaware, lawyers begin selecting a jury for a stalking trial linked to the wilmington courthouse murders from a couple years ago. it involves three relatives of thomas ma tuziwicz. prosecutors claim his wife daughter and son harassed belford for years over the internet and by mail. she was at the courthouse that day for a custody hearing involving their child. also today, a philadelphia judge is expected to appoint lawyers for the three suspects in the jewelers row kidnapping case. the trio is charged with abducting a woman from a parking garage in april and beating and torturing her. police say they want the code to the safe at the jewelry store

where she worked. new jersey's gun laws make victim. that's according to protesters who marched outside the home of steve sweeney in woodbury yesterday. those protesters say the state's gun laws need to be streamlined and modernized and sweeney is standing in the way of that. carol bound was stabbed to death wednesday night outside her home in berlin township. she had a protection order against her exboyfriend, michael itel and filed for a gun permit back in april but never got it. >> she would be alive today because she would have been able to utilize modern background check and been able to purchase and carry her firearm on her person to protect herself against any type of violent criminal. >> after a manhunt for eitel, they found he hung himself in the garage of a house in west

berlin. 4:06. this shows an suv plowing into a bar. there you go in delaware county. kind of bumped into it, didn't it? authorities say it happened early saturday morning at mike and johnnie's sports bar on north fifth street in darby. a passenger gets out of a vehicle, take a look around at damage. the driver eventually took off. police are still looking for that driver. no one was hurt. today we expect to learn more about a case involving a whistle-blower and a now suspended penn state fraternity. an attorney/) state college police department about possible crimes on the chapter's private facebook page. and that chapter was suspend after authorities say they found photos of nude unconscious women and drug sales on that page. happening today, some low-wage workers at philadelphia

international airport will hold a protest at city hall. dozens of baggage handlers wheelchair attendants and airplane cleaners plan to hold a sit-in. the nonunion workers say they're living in poverty because airlines outsource jobs to low-bid contractors who pay them as little as 7:25 an hour. they are calling for the passage of a bill. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. good morning. it's a mild start as we head into the start of your workweek. temperatures right now in philadelphia at 65 degrees. we're at 61 in kennett square 61 in chester springs, low 60s in horsham. closer to allentown, mid-60s 60 in oxford along the shore, 61 in avalon and 61 in beach haven, temperatures in dover in the low 60s. over the next eight hours we are going to warm things up. temperatures going to head above

average. we'll stay above average all week. 62 degrees by 6:00 p.m. april take a look at your 9:00 hour 70 degrees. by the time you head out for lunch today, close to 80 grows. we'll head into the mid-80s as your daytime high. we are checking out unsettled weather here. this is going to continue to shift our direction. we have a cold front and we also have a warm front that's going to help pull in more moisture. the bottom line is by the time you head home from work not heading to work we are going to see thunderstorms throughout our area. it's going to start closer to 3:00 p.m. allentown stretching down into reading. we expect heavy downpours today. even the possibility of training which is when it continues to rain over the same area over and over again. by 5:00 p.m., you'll notice some of the heavy downpours lingering into the reading, allentown and the poconos. closer to 7:00 8:00 more widespread rainfall affecting philadelphia by 8:00, 9:00 p.m. we'll continue to see a chance

those two killers that broke out of the maximum security prison in new york on saturday are still on the run this morning. nbc 10's jesse gary is live in our death tall prague our digital operations center tracking the story.

investigators say this could have been an inside job. >> new york state police now offering a $100,000 reward for the wheres about of richard matt and david sweat. it's unclear whether the duo took off on foot or found other transportation. this is the steel pipe new york governor andrew cuomo says they somehow got through after breaking through a brick wall. they used power tools to break out and handmade dummies to trick guards into thinking they were still in bed. authorities are trying to figure out how much help the convicts had. this is a note they left behind. it's a smiley face with the message, have a nice day written under it. governor cuomo says we will bring them back and we will give them a note back. authorities say because of the amount of time that's passed since the pair escaped the two could literally be anywhere. the situation, of course, is still under investigation. we'll keep an eye on it for you.

live in the digital operations center jesse gary nbc 10 news. >> on your face! >> a lot of people upset by this video. the texas police officer seen here in this viral video is on administrative leave as authorities investigate his actions during a response to a disturbance at a pool party in texas. the officer as you saw was shown throwing that 14-year-old girl to the ground and later he pins her down there with his knees in her back. the naacp released a statement about what it calls the excessive use of force by the mckinney texas police department there. from the president of the arlington branch of the naacp says the fundamental problem is the expectation that many officers have when they look at young african-americans. they expect them to be more violent with be more dangerous than any other race and expect them to engage in criminal activity end quote. today the dallas-ft. worth state and national naacp leaders are scheduled to meet with the

mckinney police chief. and police in oakland california, are trying to find out what led up to officers shooting and killing a man in his car sunday. the officers had responded to reports of an unresponsive driver. they say he had a gun in the car next to him. after two hours of trying to wake him up they finally used a metal pipe to break into the car. the man did wake up and became violent, they say. they shot and killed him. the man's gun was loaded and had been used in a burglary on saturday. meantime still no arrests in two deadly shoot innings new jersey. a man was shot and killed saturday night in the backyard of a home along placid lane in willingboro township, burlington county police say there was a party going on at the time of the shooting. in trenton, officers on patrol at 2:15 sunday morning heard gunshots. they later founded if a victim near st. joe's avenue.

there's no motive in either shooting. now to the investigation of former house speaker dennis hastert. more members from the high school wrestling squad are speaking out about allegations of sexual abuse. many want to know who individual "a" is. that's the person in a federal indictment that alleges that hastert agreed to pay $3.5 million to conceal past misconduct. the students that he once coached are puzzled by this saying they never had any indication of sexual abuse happening. >> none whatsoever. until more comes out, then i'm still going to believe he's a good person. >> a friend of another wrestler says that the student confided in him 40 years ago that he'd had sexual encounters with hastert years earlier. hastert has not comment on those allegations. dozens of young women and

weather with meteorologist brittanyney shipp. good morning as we head into the start of your workweek we'll see storms returning heading into the afternoon. hot and humid conditions especially as we push into the midweek of the workweek. i am tracking 90s for this week thursday and friday. look outside right now, we're seeing mostly clear skies, temperatures in philadelphia. at 65 degrees, just a few clouds. that's going to switch over to storms into this evening and late afternoon hours. current temperatures at 58 degrees in the poconos, 62 in trenton. we're at 61 in mt. holly 63 in wilmington 61 in stone harbor and 62 degrees in dover. we are seeing more of a mild start to the morning. in fact temperatures are up 15 degrees in the poconos, up 14 in allentown, 12 in pottstown. not a huge difference in philadelphia. we're about 10 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. here's a closer look at the radar. quiet conditions for most of the

area area. just outside of harrisburg we're seeing a little bit of shower activity. we'll see moisture moving in from the east and we'll also see more moisture moving up from the south. that combination is going to give us by 6:00 p.m. a chance of thunderstorms from allentown stretching into the poconos, down into lancaster county into newark. if you live in those areas, your evening commute will ab effected. we'll continue to see the showers and thunderstorms moving through our area throughout tonight into our overnight hours and we will see another chance of showers as we push into our tuesday morning and tuesday afternoon. even say chance of a few isolated thunderstorms on tuesday as well. as far as today is concern, our temperatures will be a few degrees warmer than what we saw yesterday. ranging between 83 and 86 degrees. tracking those afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, wind speeds out of the south 5 to 15 miles an hour.

it gets warmer heading into wednesday. we get rid of all the storms and the showers on wednesday, 87 degrees. take a look at thursday and friday. hot and humid conditions expected on both days. temperatures push into the 90s. by next weekend we are tracking a chance of storms with temperatures at 89 degrees. >> starting to look a lot like summer. all right. thank you, britt. 4:21. new jersey chris christie shares his thoughts on legalizinge inging marijuana. a frightening encounter at a beach in florida. a young boy is bitten by a shark. the latest on his condition is ahead.

4:23. breaking news into the newsroom in center city where police arrested two men who they say climbed scaffolding and broke into the window of an office building on broad street near arch. investigators say witnesses called police when they saw those men throwing various items out of the windows of the vacant building. police arrested the pair on the 18th floor. new findings show the number of abortions performed in the u.s. is down. an associated press survey reveals those procedures have decreased by about 12% since 2010. and that's happened in states where new laws made it tougher to get an abortion. also it's happened in states where abortion rights are protected. pro-choice advocates say the drop is due to expanded access to effective contraceptives. pro-life supporters say more women are choosing to carry their pregnancies to term. in pennsylvania abortions are down nearly 13% since 2010.

delaware has seen over an 18% drop. new jersey does not track those numbers. people who signed up for health insurance through obamacare may see rates go up soon. many of those increases, close to 10%. the department of insurance says that these are just proposals and that the department has to approve any changes. officials say they expect to make a decision by early october. in new jersey if chris christie does become president, he says legalized marijuana has to go. states like colorado have started to legalize that drug even though it's still against federal law. the justice department has agreed to look the other way as long as the drug is tightly regulated. but yesterday on cbs's "face the nation" christie said that would change under his administration. the new jersey governor hasn't formally announced a run for president. he said he will decide sometime this month. new jersey racetrack is

trying to lure triple crown winner american pharoah to its next race. american pharoah became the first triple crown winner since 1978 with the huge victory at bell monday.stakes on saturday. he will continue to race this year but he hasn't said where. in the meantime, his horse is back at his home in kentucky greeting his adoring fans. >> it was really neat this morning to be able to share this horse with everybody else. me as a fan, i know when i started training thoroughbreds, i love to see the horses up close. that's what this horse is all about. >> now american pharoah's owners do live in new jersey. so the officials at monmouth park believe they at least have a chance to get that horse to their track. we'll let you know how that turns out. the "today" show will talk live exclusively with the owners of american pharoah as well as the horse's trainer and jockey. that's coming up this morning starting at 7:00 on "today." a 9-year-old boy in florida
