camouflage -- >> gilly suit i guess. >> they have not found the inmates considered dangerous. it is our top story. we want to get to nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: savannah good morning. the manhunt knows no boundaries. the rural forest and farm land a backdrop to a massive search a few hours ago. authorities say this isn't the only place they are looking. on the run five days now, investigators are on the trail of murderers david sweat and are richard matt following leads not just here but also here . 51-year-old joyce mitchell a supervisor in the prison tailor shop who worked with both sweat and matt has been identified as a person of interest. on the day the inmates were reported missing -- >> be on the lookout for two escapees. >> reporter: mitchell checked into this hospital complaining of a panic attack. could the inmates have used her? we spoke by phone to a convicted

murderer who testified against richard matt in court. we agreed to disguise his voice because he fears for his safety. >> there is no telling what kind of revenge he might want to exact on people that i love people that are close to me . this is a are very psychotic individual. >> reporter: 40 miles from the prison wall they cut through and the manhole today escaped from a tip that sweat and matt were seen running into these fields. in willsboro an intense man hunt. with hundreds of tips investigators are mobilizing search teams across the region. these are the conditions they face -- thick terrain, all across this area. saying the trail has gone cold here for now, authorities are reaching out to those who knew the fugitives, including richard matt's 23-year-old son. >> we are just waiting like everyone else i guess. >> reporter: police say there is no word or sign of the inmates.

in communities like this, there is fear they could kill again. brought to this field by a specific tip, authorities are concerned that both suspects may be armed. they fear the confrontation between them may quickly turn deadly. matt and savannah? >> tense times miguel. thank you very much. >> meanwhile joyce mitchell's son is defending his mother in an exclusive interview with nbc's stephanie gosk. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. tony mitchell said there is no way his mother willingly helped sweat and matt escape from the prison. he said the rumors are lies. he's angry at local friends and neighbors who he say have are jumped on a bandwagon against her. >> she is not the kind of person that's going to risk her life or other people's lives to let these guys escape from prison. if she was involved in anything you can rest assured there was a good reason to it and there is more than a relationship with an

inmate. >> reporter: do you think it's possible she was taken advantage of? >> i don't know. they are both convicted murderers. you have an inmate in prison for life they don't have anything to lose. when you are put in a situation where family members, friends or other family members might be threatened or at risk you do a lot of things you wouldn't think just to protect your family. >> reporter: do you realize there may have been a threat? >> i'm constantly worried about what might be going on. >> reporter: he last spoke to his mother the day of the escape. his mother called from an emergency room where he said she was treated for a panic attack. people are saying maybe she had a panic attack because she was supposed to help them get in the car and didn't. a lot of speculation. >> no. i mean my mommer worries a lot about everything. especially with me. >> reporter: has she been to the hospital before with panic attacks? >> i believe -- i believe she has a few years ago. she constantly has panic attacks

around the house. i mean, she's a wor arery -- >> reporter: nervous. >> a nervous person. >> reporter: he's received calls from the police asking about his parents whereabouts. he said he has no idea where they are. matt and savannah. >> outside the prison stephanie gosk. thank you very much. days after president obama acknowledged the the u.s. lacked quote, a complete strategier for helping iraq defeat isis there is word this morning of a new plan to send more u.s. troops to the region. nbc's kristen welker is following the story from the white house. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. according to a top official at the white house, the obama administration isser considering sending hundreds of u.s. military trainers to iraq to help the iraqis defeat isis. one official tells me the number of new trainers under consideration is less than 500. this new strategy comes after iraqi forces have suffered a

number of defeats in recent weeks including the fall of ramadi a key city. president obama signalled he was considering a range of options to further help train and equip iraqi forces. they will likely have a decision in the coming days. savannah? >> i want to ask you about another story in the headlines. nbc confirmed new secret service agents working who don't yet have their national security clearances. what's this all about? >> reporter: well savannah here is the latest. according to a secret service fish clancy became aware that as many as four to five dozen agents have been posted in century sensitive positions but haven't completed the entire national security clearance process. the problem is the result of administrative backlog due to an increase in firing in the wake of a string of security breaches we have been reporting on

including in september when the fence jumper made it into the white house. brian laery told me quote the dreker tor has taken immediate steps to accelerate the top secret adjudication process and allocated additional resources to ensure this is completed as quickly as possible. he also noted most of the new hires created the bulk of it including polygraph test thes and background tests. the agency said the problem should be fixed by the end of the week. back to you. >> kristen welker from the white house wh thank you. nearly a month after the derailment in philadelphia the ntsb is announcing new findings today. willie has the latest. good morning. >> good morning. investigators have been looking at a range of evidence to determine whether the cause was mechanical malfunction or humor error. officials aid the train was going 106 miles per hour on a curve with a 50 miles per hour speed limit when it derailed. new reports say we could find

out as soon as today whether or not the engineer of the train, 32-year-old brandon bostian was using his cell phone at the type of the crash. he said he doesn't recall fig about the moments before or during the accident but maintains his phone was in his bag during the trip in compliance with federal rules. his lawyer said he called 911 after the crash with. sources say the ntsb is expected to release findings later this morning. savannah. >> thank you very much. meantime dennis hastert is out on bail after pleading not guilty to charges in the hush money scandal in federal court. gabe gutierrez was at the courthouser for thor hearing. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. >> reporter: hastert taught high schooler in 15 years but now faces the legal fight of his life. it was a wild scene as he made his first public appearance in nearly two weeks. this morning, dennis hastert is

out on $4500 bail after facing a media frenzy. he pleaded not guilty to charges he broke banking laws and lied to the fbi. inside the federal courtroom he whispered "yes" when asked whether he understood the terms of bond including surrenderering his passport removing firearms from his home and submitting dna samples. >> i i assume the defense will be it's my money, i'm entitled to withdraw it i am entitled to use it for any lawful purpose. this whole incident may be distasteful but not unlawful. >> reporter: the indictment claims hastert made 15 withdrawals of $50,000 and at least 106 cash withdrawals of less than $10 ,000 each all to pay an unidentified individual a. federal law enforcement officials tell nbc news the money was to cover up past sexual misconduct with a male student, the allegation rocking the illinois town where he was a

finances. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. he is one of the republicans' fastest rising stars at 44 the youngest presidential candidate in the field. new scrutiny focused on marco rubio's financial struggles and spending habits. the this morning marco rubio are's campaign insists he's faced financial challenges like most americans and they make him a better candidate, one that voters can relate to. the new york times detailed his debt and mortgages including his purchase of three homes, putting no money down on two of them. after a publisherer paid marco rubio $800,000 to write a book in 2012 he paid off $100,000 in law school loans and purchased an $80,000 24-foot fishing boat like this and leased a $50,000 luxury suv. he's been under scrutiny before. he charged personal expenses to a state republican party credit card including the times reports

>> the actions on the video are indefensible. >> reporter: the cell phone vid are owe has been viewed more than ten million times. >> i was in the middle of a group of black people. they put them on the ground except for me. >> reporter: the resignation comes one night after hundreds marched protesting his actions. the mention chapter could be criminal charges. >> i'm not going to comment as far as prosecution. that's not within my realm. i believe we should hold the staff and employees accountable. >> on your face! >> reporter: officer casebolt has not made a comment. janet shamlian nbc news houston. new developments this morning in the colorado theater shooting trial of james holmes. the judge dismissed three jurors tuesday and had them escorted out of the courtroom. this after a juror came forward claiming another juror watched

news coverage and told two other jurors about it. they were instructed not to read news reports about the trialer or discuss the case amongst themselves. holmes is charged with killing 12 people in the shooting spree. three alternates will now become jurors. a camera captured frightening moments when a gust of wind swept away a bouncy castle this in southern china last week. a 3-year-old girl died in the accident. the video shows a woman trying to grab onto the large castle as it blows away. at some point the girl died at the hospital. there are questions about whether or not the castle was properly secured to the ground. los angeles police are looking for the public's help tracking down two drivers involved in a road rage-fuelled brawl. crazy video. the drivers were screaming at each otherer for ten minutes. they got out, started throwing punches. one man was almost hit by a van, as you see right there when he

fell into on coming traffic. that fight lasted under 15 seconds. so far neither man has filed a complaint against the other. what looked like a blowout turned into a nail biter in game three of the nba finals. at one point cleveland had a 17-point lead over the warriors in the third quarter. lebron james finished with 41 points overall. golden state got within one point in the fourth quarter. still the cavaliers held on to win game three 96-91. they lead the series 2-1. game four tomorrow night in cleveland. this is an exciting series to say the least. right? >> absolutely. good basketball. al is on assignment. we have dylan here with a check of the weather. >> remember hurricane blanca? we are still talking about her. she still has a lot of moisture being pumped into the southwest which need it is rain. san francisco seeing steady rain now. fresno seeing rain and the moisture moves in from the south

with the upper level low and the -- upper level high to the east pumping in moisture from the south. we are certainly going to see the chance of brief flash flooding. also flooding as the rivers start to fill up. we've got northern parts of nevada also into parts of the rockies where we have flash flood and flood watches in effect. we have additional rain over the next 48 hours that will move into the upper midwest. minneapolis could end up with three inches of rain especially into tomorrow. this area could see the threat of stronger storms. it's right along this front where we'll see stronger storms redevelop this afternoon back through the central plains and through the eastern and southern great lakes as we go into this evening. that's the weather across the country.

i have four jobs three kids. there are trouble spots but let's focus on the abs. what can we do? >> gilbert is helping out today. we'll target the core which is your front and back midsection area with two great exercises. the first will start in a plank. come down into a plank for me. take your left knee and bring it up to the left elbow. then your right knee. the second exercise will do the same thing but top to bottom. your entire abdominal region. if you would lay on the ground on your back great. i want your arms straight up in front of you. bring the legs up as well. i want you to open both arms and legs and close them. two exercises to really get this entire core area. four spots, four workouts to help you have a trouble-free summer. so it's important to point out that trying to lose weight just in your trouble spot isn't possible. that's spot training.

david sweat and richard matt who escaped from prison in upstate new york a few days ago. prison employee joyce mitchell has been named a person of interest in this case. on the day they were reported missing she checked into a hospital complaining of a panic attack. stephanie gosk at nbc had an exclusive interview with joyce's son toby who denies his mother helped the men escape and says the rumor she had a relationship with one of the convicts could not be true. >> she is not the kind of person that's going to risk her life or other people's lives to let these guys escape from prison. if she was involved in anything you can rest assured there was a good reason to it. there isser more to it than a relationship with an inmate. >> do you think it's possible that she was taken advantage of? >> i don't know. they are both convicted murderers. you have an inmate in prison for life they really don't have anything to lose. when you are put in a situation where a family member, friend or

nbc 10 breaking news. >> the national transportation safety board just announced the engineer of the amtrak train that derailed in philadelphia was not using his cell phone at the time of the accident. the ntsb says brandon bostian's phone shows there was no calls, text or data usage during the time he was operating the train that evening. 8 died in last month's derailment. as for why the train was going 106 miles per hour in a 50-mile-per-hour curve investigators are still trying to answer that question. we are looking at the forecast now, and it's warming up nicely on this wednesday.

we begin with breaking news this morning. two buses collided in the lincoln tunnel this morning between new jersey and new york city. here's a live look at the scene right now. new jersey transit bus hit the rear of a private bus. 18 people are known to be hurt. the buses were heading into manhattan when they crashed. we have video of one person on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance on the new york side of the tunnel. we've seen people walk out carefully, under their own power. it happened on the new jersey side of the tunnel. there are 60 to 90-minute delays getting into the tunnel on the jersey side. that's what we're getting right now. we'll c
