search for the two convicted murders that escaped from the maximum security prison. six days later could they be a few miles away? there are a lot of developments overnight on the story. we're starting with miguel almaguer. good morning to you. >> good morning. investigators will only say a tip lead them here, but with local schools shut down in the area and more and more squads moving up the hill behind me we haven't seen a large police presence like this and an area shut down in some time. overnight and into the morning what may be their best lead. authorities flooding the area three miles southeast of the clinton correctional facility in dannemora dannemora. police ordering residents to stay indoors and turn on outside lights. hours after the search expanded to vermont. >> it's insane. crazy. >> across the border from new york police on high alert.

scouring homes, campsites, boats, and bridges. for the first time convict david sweat talked of coming to vermont before making their daring escape. >> we have information that suggests they thought new york was going to be hot and vermont would be cooler in terms of law enforcement. >> following new leads in multiple states, more than 500 tips. police are going door to door using these. >> they are both murders. you don't know what they're going to do. >> investigators focussing on the shoreline and seasonal cottages. >> this is just amazing that this is happening, you know, how it has come to this. >> this morning day six of the manhunt no confirmed sign of the killers as the dragnet expands deeper to vermont while remaining close to where it all began. like so much of the other land in this area the area behind me is a thick forest conducting a

grid search simply won't be easy. as more officer pour into the region it is clear the search here is a high priority. >> a lot going on miguel almaguer thank you. >> police are questioning joyce mitchell. the woman at the center of a lot of speculation in this case. her ex-husband is speaking out. stefanie gosk has that part of the story. >> good morning. for the first time law enforcement officials are saying that the 51-year-old grandmother and seam tres worked here at the prison tailor shop befriended the two and may have given them help needed to break out. sources tell nbc news they're interviewing joyce mitchell looking for any information they can get from her. >> we have spoken to the female that the media has widely reported on. obviously, she was befriended or she befriended the inmates and

may have had some sort of role in assisting them. i'm not prepared to go into details. >> mitchell's first husband hasn't spoken to her in almost 20 years. believe she is could have been manipulate manipulated. >> she's from the country. she could be just a country girl that got sweet talked by some city guy. >> that small town is home to just 800 people. not many job prospects for residents like mitchell who commuted 90 minutes to work. >> there's not a lot of work in your town is there? >> no. there's one little gas station in my town. it doesn't even sell gas. >> so the job was important to your parents, also for their livelihood now? >> yeah absolutely. very important to them. >> mitchell's marriage ended after he said she cheated on him. she doesn't want to judge her based on recent speculation. >> i don't know.

i loved her. she was my wife then all of a sudden she changed and a year and a half later i moved on. >> mitchell's family goes back as many as five generations in her hometown. people we spoke to there say they're shocked and angry that their sleepily little village has been put on the map because of the prison break. >> thank you. let's turn to former fbi profiler. good morning to you, clint. >> hi savannah. >> prison officials have acknowledged they are talking to joyce mitchell questioning her as to whether or not she may have helped in some way. they say she befriended the inmates. why do you think she hasn't been charged yet? >> well they want to get the maximum amount of information they can. she may, for example, know what their steps were going to be after they popped out of the manhole manhole. if, for example, she was supposed to drive them. where was she going to drive them? mexico canada? we know we're looking from border to border in the united

states right now, but there's no information, no solid information amongst 500 tips to say these guys actually got out of the area. that's why we see so much search effort being exerted there right now. >> i want to ask you about that in a moment. staying on joyce mitchell for the time being. here is a woman described as a grandmother. we heard her son say she would never do something like this. she has to know as a corrections officer this is a vicious killer. what is the dynamic she would be friend an inmate like this? >> the two things are normally drive an employee inside a prison to cooperate with a prisoner is money and emotion. either money, drugs, that are promised on the outside. if you help me do something, you know if you do something from give me a privilege to help me escape or emotion. i love you. i care about you. we realize one of the two convicts matt is very

manipulative sociopath. somebody fully capable of tapping into the emotions of this woman. perhaps she thought she was helping a little bit. you know you have the slippery slope. do this for me. do the next thing for me. all of a sudden get me an electric saw, 100-foot extension cord and be waiting at the manhole. it looks like that end, should the media reports be correct that's when she changed her mind. instead of waiting she checked into a hospital. >> that's the report not confirmed by nbc she was supposed to be the get away drive but got cold feet. if they were expecting a ride and not getting one, would you expect them not to be able to get very far? >> well, you've always got plan b. realize inmates inside a prison spend a vast amount of their time scheming thinking fantasizing. part of the fantasy is the escape. escape as far as they're

concerned with coming out of the manhole, that was the fantasy. the reality is our ride is not there, where do we go now? that puts them on foot. they're not survivalist. they don't know the area. it doesn't look like they've had a prestage house, food we don't know of a car. that's why law enforcement says first of all, let's stay in this local area and if we get information they have fled from one does another that's fine but the last thing they want to do is ignore the possibilities that these two guys who are inside one of the hunting cabins a house, a barn something like that hunkered down waiting, perhaps for law enforcement to disappear so they can disappear in the population. >> that's intriguing. we'll continue to follow. thank you. the texas police officer who resigned earlier this week in the wake of the video showing him pushing a teenager to the ground at a pool party is now apologizing for his actions. nbc's janet has the latest on

the story. good morning. >> good morning. new information for the attorney for eric casebolt who said her client was not targeting minorities. the actions caught on cell phone video, she says came after he responded to two separate suicide calls that took an emotional toll. the first public words from the police officer in this video are coming from his attorney who apologized on eric casebolt's behalf. he apologizes to all. that day was not representative of the ten-year service to the community of mckinney. >> by his resignation the community may start to heal. >> it came after he responded to two suicide calls and the stress had taken its toll. >> with all that had happened that day, he allowed his emotions to get the better of him. >> we're also now hearing from the teenage girl pushed to the

ground through her attorney. said she's shaken and hasn't decided whether to file a formal complaint. >> the casebolt's voluntary resignation should not mean the end of the investigation. >> this morning the community is taking in what happened. hoping for a return to the way things were. not knowing for that is possible. >> i don't know. this is kind of shocking but at the same time it is kind of a relief just to know he has resigned >> she's afraid to leave her home her attorney said casebolt had to leave his because he's been receiving death threats. >> this incident in the seven minutes worth of video does not fully portray eric's moral and ethical character. >> civil rights groups are continuing to press for further action, but the district attorney has not said whether any characters might be filed. >> thank you, janet. >> we have natalie here now with

in washington today. >> big showdown over the trade agenda. house republicans are getting ready for a two-day debate and a vote tomorrow despite heavy democratic oppositions. it centers around the fast track trade negotiating authority. many of the president's fellow democrats are threatening to derail the package because of concerns about what will happen to american workers who lose their jobs to free trade. pope francis is urging russian president putin to make a sincere and great effort to achieve peace in ukraine. meanwhile, putin kept the pope waiting. apparently arriving more than an hour late on wednesday for his meeting at the vatican. the talks concentrated on the ukraine conflict and the middle east where the catholic church is worried about the faith of the christian minority. you've heard of snakes on the plane, but what about sharks on a road? that was the case in florida on a highway on wednesday when a truck carrying four sand bar

sharks up to an aquarium in new york blew a tire ran off the road and crashed. unfortunately, one of the sharks was killed. another semitruck was brought out to transport the three surviving sharks. no people were injury injured in the accident. a washington state man thrown to the bottom of a ravine during a motorcycle crash survived 24 hours in the wilderness thanks to his iphone charger and perhaps his training as a former navy s.e.a.l. medic. matt was in the remote area of the columbia river gorge when he crashed his motorcycle. he fashioned a incident using sticks shoe laces, and the iphone charge. after a painful long night a pair of hikers rescued him. the chicago blauk hawkckhawks evened the score in game four of the stanley cup finals.

sky 4 ten is over breaking news. police confirmed they are investigating a cab driver's report that the cabbie picked up two people who looked like the escaped convicts from upstate new york. we learn the cab driver picked them up at broad and vine and took them to 30th street station. police are talking to the cab driver who admits he picked up a cuff other fares after the men before he called police. police are investigating and the investigation in its preliminary stages still. nbc10 is live on the ground at 30th station as well and police taped off the taxi cab. the two pretty muchersisoners escaped in prisoner in upstate new york on saturday.

we're out here to have an investigation, and i guess they're not being cooperative. we have to see the child to make sure the child is all right. we do need police assistance. >> it is unclear what happened next because the call was transferred. it's also unclear what was being investigated in the first place. arkansas's department of human services tells nbc news it neither confirm or deny whether we investigated a specific family. so far no comment from the duggars who star in the reality show "19 kids and counting". the family recently admitted in 2002 and 2003 when they're eldest child josh was a teenager, he inappropriately touched five underage girls. four of the victims were his sisters including jill and jessa who spoke to fox news last week defending their brother and parents. >> they handled the situation very well. they set up safety guards in our

we are following this breaking news. police are in the preliminary stages of investigating whether two escaped convicts from new york state are in philadelphia. police tell us a cab driver told them he picked up two men that he said looked like the escapees at broad and vine and 30th street station around 4:30 this morning and he picked up two other fares before calling 911. police have taped off a taxi cab involved in the report and minutes ago, philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey texted us there have been lots of reports about the escapees and no reason to believe they are in philadelphia. you can use the nbc10 news app to stay updated on this still breaking stories. now updated on the forecast with meteorologist bill henley. >> tracy a quick warm-up today and sunshine and hazy and humid

leads. police activity here just a few miles from the prison break is certainly intensifying late this morning. natalie, back to you. >> miguel almaguer thank you so much. investigators are questioning joyce mitchell who worked with the two convicts in the prison's tailor shop. state police say she became friends with the inmates and may have had some role in assisting them. mitchell's first husband hasn't spoken with his exin nearly 20 years, but he believes she might have been manipulated because she's just a small town girl who could have been sweet talked by some city guy, in his words. internal united nations investigation found that u.n. peace keeping courses sexually abused hundreds of women and girls in the countries where they serve. the document alleges that women in haiti and highliberia were forced to provide sex in exchange for food and medical supplies. 480 sexual exploitation and

>> first of all, we have to say the study researchers used an unconventional approach to studying big data and look for a particular drug effect. what they did was scan and analyze the medical records of close to 3 million patients and tried to link together sort of key words such as heart disease, heart attack and these drug called eded tpi. they found there was a 16 to 20% increase risk of heart attack in the people who were using these drugs called ppi. these were study conclusions and associations. not cause and effect. >> some experts, it sounds like we should include you are a little bit skeptical of the methodology here. >> correct. we have to remember the traditional approach the approach that the fda would support is that you do something called a prospective randomized control. you compare it to a placebo. you have two groups and look for an outcome measure to determine whether or not a drug is causing

the particular effect. the study offers very clear is that not suggesting there is a cause and effect they're raising the concern there is potentially an association between the drugs. >> same study looked at the different anti-s a used. was there any concern about these? >> there wasn't. which would lend a little bit of support to their findings. patients on the other h 2 blockers there was not the effect. that was one, you know, sort of plus for them i should say. >> bottom line should anybody be concerned? >> no. i think this is one of the times where you definitely have to speak with your physician whether or not you need to be taking the drugs. patients are taking prescription medicines like this doctors keep refilling the prescriptions and refilling the prescriptions and perhaps these people should not be taking them for such chronic long periods of times. you need to discuss with your doctor. >> good information. good to see you. we reached out to the makers of

north-of-philadelphia. new from overnight, a fire in the northern liberty section of philadelphia force some people to flee their homes. a viewer sent us this video of the fire that broke out on a store front on girard avenue. people living in the apartments made it out safely. no word yet on what caused it though. no one was hurt. well, we are waiting to learn what's next in the investigation into last month's deadly amtrak derailment in philadelphia. federal investigators revealed yesterday the train engineer was not talking or texting on his phone at the time of the crash. according to ntsb, there were no calls, no text messages no data usage on brandon bastian's phone. they are not through look at the phone. it may have been on airplane mode. if it was, he may have been able to use an app. this investigation is expected to take a year.
