"today" charleston church massacre with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning and welcome to "today" on a thursday morning. nine people killed in an unthinkable crime in charleston south carolina. this morning this image is the one being spread across the country. who is this man who opened fire during a prayer meeting? >> obviously police taking close look at the images. it's our top story. we'll be talking about a lot about it this morning. as savannah said ten people were shot. at least nine are dead after a gunman opened fire during the prayer meeting at the emanuel church. >> police have not released the names of the victim. we know the church pastor clement they pinckney. he was also a state senator. >> a clean-shaven white male said to be in his early 20s,

sandy blond or light brown hair. >> the fbi is already on the scene. so far the suspect hasn't been found. an e intense manhunt underway at this hour. we go right to chris jansing. >> reporter: police are hoping the surveillance video will help them catch the suspect quickly. all starting to unfold after 9:00 last night. you can see part of the emanuel church just down the street from where i'm standing. a place where members said to be everyone is welcome. it wouldn't have seemed out of the ordinary they said if a young white man came in during the bible study. apparently he came in sat down for a bit, and stood and opened fire. this morning the city of charleston is in mourning and on edge. >> at this point, we want everybody to be vigilant. >> this morning police

canvassing the streets of charleston south carolina. searching for this man they say opened fire at a historically black church. >> if they see anything suspicious call us. >> the shooting descend upon parishioners opened fire killing nine people. eight who died inside the church. one person pronounced dead at the hospital. >> i believe this was a hate crime. >> is that why the fbi is investigating it as a hate crime? >> it will be investigated as a hate crime. the fbi would be here regardless because the size and scope of the investigation. >> police describing the gunman a white male 21-year-old with sandy blond hair. >> we were tracking this individual with canines. we were making sure that he was not in the area to commit other crimes. >> police have not confirmed the names of victims.

reportedly among the dead state senator clement they pinckney. >> his cousin adied in the attack. a local basher in his early 20s with a positive attitude. >> it doesn't surprise you he was at a bible study? >> no. because that's what he is. he's a prishs man. >> the shooting comes two months after walter scott was shot by a white police officer in neighboring north charleston. multiple people in the community didn't want to rush to condemn the shooter. instead calling for peace. >> we're trying to keep calm. we're trying to keep peace within the community. we're trying to be the barrier of good news in a time of war. we're trying to have peace. >> and there will be a prayer vigil at noon today. it is unclear how many people

were in that bible study. we know that one person is recovering and our local nbc reporter said he spoke to a witness who described the young girl at the bible study who pretended to be dead and she survived. we're going to continue to follow this obviously, very closely. police are trying to get things back to normal but obviously there's a tremendous amount of concern in this city this morning with that mass murder on the loose. >> chris jansing, thank you very much. nbc justice correspondent pete williams following the latest on the search for the suspect. pete what can you tell us? >> matt good morning. charleston police are in charge of this investigation and likely will remain so but the fbi is helping out. an fbi official said it is photoic experts are looking to enhance the surveillance video. both the suspect and the suspect's car -- as for the car, it's difficult to read the license plate number from the surveillance picture, but

photoenmance may help there. you can be sure that agents will help the police scour the area searching for other surveillance cameras showing the suspect coming or going. they will be checking state data bases about the make and model year to narrow down the possible owners. and the fbi can help with interviews of the members of the church looking for any information of possible past threats. >> thank you very much. clin vanzant is a former fbi profiler. good morning. we heard from pete the fbi trying to enhance the images of the suspect and the car. they're obviously scouring that church looking for physical evidence. what else can they go on? >> well, there's a lot of things. as pete says number one, they'll look for any type of video surveillance on the outside. in a terrible shooting situation like this matt it's probably a semi all pistol. there would have been empty

rounds ejected. likely could have the fingerprints or the dna of the shooter. this is going to be a combination of physical evidence gathered at the scene both one more time -- we have a good photograph we have a picture of the car. somebody knows the guy. dial 9-1-1 and we'll get him. >> anybody who is capable of this level of violence and this level of hate probably has vented his anger either to someone he knows or maybe even online is that where police will look as well? >> yeah. they'll be looking at past threats. somebody of this individual's age probably has been active with social media. he probably suggested to other people ease anger. either specific individuals at the church or at african-americans. somehow he would have told someone. people don't just snap. there's a build up to it. those around should be aware. >> we often look at churches and think they are places of refuge.

we were talking on the phone earlier this morning and you relayed a shocking statistic, i think. >> yeah matt. last year there were 176 incidents of significant violence inside houses of worship. 74 resulted in death. we think schools, houses of warship should be places isn't a ty -- sanctity. >> clint vanzant, good to get your perspective. i had a chance to talk to thes spastor of the nearby church and a close friend of pastor pinckney who passed away. i asked him how he and the community are doing this morning. >> terrible. terrible but very supportive of the mayor and the police department, but most of all, franklin norris bishop of the

ame church continues to lead us and have us to respond in kind that we lean on one another to help the community get through this terrible situation. >> it is shocking in every sense, and already authorities are calling it a hate crime. how do you feel about what has happened here? i mean is there anything that would ever have made you think this could happen in your community? >> yeah for me it's a shock, but when you look at america. america has a great love affair with guns and anybody can get them whether they're mentally disturbed, whether they're crazy, part of a hate group. give them a gun and nobody wants to police it or reign it in. when you have things like this it would be absurd to think that every church that has a service or a meeting would lock their

doors and lock people out. you just can't do that. when you look at this country and the direction it's going in it's a lot of violence everywhere. it's almost nonstop. >> reverend i know we're just counting the human toll of what has happened here. i know you were close to reverend pinckney what can you tell me about him? >> he was a leader for the young people group. when he became an elder person as a man, there was no doubt he did not address yes, ma'am or yes, sir. always had the demeanor about him. >> i know he had a young family a wife and two daughters. do you know anything about how they're doing this morning? >> well, we were with the families last night. they're definitely in our prayers and the church has come to their aid and rescue so has the community along with other nine persons who were gunned

character charged with trying to kill an federal office. he was plotting with a college student arrested over the weekend to stage a terror attack in new york. the u.s. supreme court could rule on several high profile cases today. among them is a decision on extending subsidizes for the affordable care act. congressional republicans now say they will move to temporarily continue aid if subsidizes are overturned. supreme court justices could vote on legalizing same-sex marriages. a white tiger that broke through a zoo killed one man and injured another in georgia when the flooding took place. >> good morning to you. people there once again afraid to go outside. they have been told that all of the most dangerous animals from the zoo had either died or been recaptured but that clearly wasn't the case. late wednesday a volunteer

helping to clean up after the floods was attacked by a tiger. it was the full-grown white tiger. it had crouched in a warehouse. zoo keepers thought it died in a flood. but when a clean up crew went in it lunched. the eye witness said the man who went in first was bitten in the throat. he didn't survive. throughout the night armed searchers were looking for another missing tiger and a striped highee that. the flooding on sunday swept away cars and people killing at least 20 and destroying much of the zoo. about half of the 600 animals either drowned or escaped. this hippo swam out of his pen. it was tranquilized and herded back to an enclosure. but bears and big cats were loose in the city. >> it was necessary to shoot

animals because they could harm people. >> officials say the last missing tiger and highee that may be buried in the mud and debris. debris. there's lots of false alarms overnight but no sightings of a tiger or hiee that. there was a sighting from the endangered african penguin swimming in a river 40 miles from the capitol. >> thank you. frightening moments this week at the airport in kazakhstan when a commercial airliner burst into flames moments before passengers were about to board. look at this boeing 737 after a oxygen cylinder exploded. cell phone videos shows 15-foot flames erupting from the fuselage. the golden state warriors were in a playful mood when they flew home on wednesday with

father clinging to a tree while the flooding caught him off guard. he his 2-year-old daughter. she was swept out of his arms. searchers are searching for her this morning. we keep him in our thoughts and prayers as they continue to do that search. look this is the latest on bill 80 miles southeast of oklahoma city. 25 miles per hour winds. you can see the spin still hanging in there. we talked about the fact there's so much moisture in the soil it's releasing energy and heat and keeping the circulation together. look at the track goes through friday morning into missouri and central and southern illinois and indiana dumping a ton of rain. flood watches from texas all the way into illinois including st. louis, hot springs. locally up to 8 inches of rain on down south of branson. throughout the region heavy rain and flooding is going to be a possibility.

7:30 now on a thursday morning, and you're looking at the city of charleston south carolina. an unspeakable tragedy occurring this overnight. a gunman walking into a church sitting there for perhapsing an hour opening fire and nine have been killed. police released this surveillance image of the suspected gunman. male early 20s, sandy blond or brown church. >> he walked into the church during an evening prayer meeting and opened fire. the massacre being called a hate crime. and charleston's mayor said it is an unfathomable and

unspeakable act. chris jansing is following this from charleston. good morning. >> we got an update from visibly shake city officials, savannah and they said resources have been pouring in both state and federal. one of the things calling this a hate crime allows them to get more federal resources. they need more forensic they need more investigative. they vowed not to stop until the kus suspect is in custody. and police chief mullen described more of what happened last night. >> the individual was in the church attending a meeting that was going on there and stayed there almost an hour with the group for the event. there's some information that has been developed in the investigation would lead us to believe that. we're not going to put it out right now, because if we capture the individual we want to make sure that during the interview process that we're getting real information from him.

>> one of the thing they're going to put out are some more stills from the surveillance video. they said they don't know if anybody was targeted or if it was just the church itself. i can tell you, i spent a lot of time a last night at the local hotels where family members were. to say it was heartbreaking doesn't describe it. the question they want answered is why. >> chris jansing, thank you very much. let's go back to clint van zandt. it's a chilling detail saying the suspect may have been sitting in the house of warship for up to an hour as people said their prayers before he started firing. >> yeah and i think what that suggests to us savannah he made a decision to do something. obviously he's in the church. he's carrying a gun. he's ready to shoot. did he have to build up his courage? did he have to identify a specific target? whatever it was that took him that one hour period to make a

decision but he could also be looking around to see if there is anyone who could stop him. we know more and more houses of worship are employing armed guards. he may have been looking for something that too. but the question is always from a profiler's perspective -- we understand somebody committed a terrible act but why not yesterday and why not tomorrow? we know he chose wednesday night because that's when people met there. was there any specific target inside the church. >> they're still looking for the gunman. they have surveillance images. they have a shot of the car where the license plate should be visible but in the shot we see it is very fuzzy. do the feds have the kind of technology that should be able to reveal more once they enhance it? >> well you know, you and i see tom clancy movies where we see a satellite from space zero in on a license plate, but you have to have something workable. you are to have a fairly good

escape. lyle's attorney joins us now. >> noto say lyle mitchell's life has been turned upside down is an understatement. his wife accused of having a sexual relationship with one or both of the inmates. as part of the escape there might have been plans to kill him. it almost sounds ridiculous to ask, but how is he doing? >> he's in shock still. he thought this woman was his best friend for 21 years, and now he finds out she was possibly even part of a plot to kill him. >> he was interviewed by the police on wednesday, was it purely an attempt to get information about his wife or is there any chance that they're also considering the possibility that he was somehow involved in this? >> right now i don't see any indication that they're looking at him as a suspect. he did give a statement earlier on and yesterday it was an effort to go through the

statement to make sure that everyone in that statement was accurate accurate. they did want to turn over a few other stones. they wanted to know how it was he didn't know about this beforehand. >> let me ask you about that. there had been an investigation inside the prison awhile ago, long before the break that possibly his wife had an inappropriate relationship with one of these inmates. that inmate was actually removed from the thaiailor shop for awhile before returning. was mr. mitchell aware of that? did he confront his wife? >> he was aware of it. he talked to his wife about it at the time and i believe he talked to the inmate at that time. the inmate came up to him and assured him there was no inappropriate relationship. his wife assured him there was no inappropriate relationship that they just worked together. >> we should mention when you say the inmate came up to him. mr. mitchell also works at the prison. just to make sure that people understand that.

i know that mr. mitchell spoke to his wife in jail on tuesday. what was the nature of that conversation? can you describe it for me? >> he went into talk to her. like i said this is a woman that he cares deeply about and he still cares deeply about her. he needed some answers. he was just blown away by what was coming out. the fact that she told him that these two inmates had a plot to kill him. that she was part of the plot. >> she confirmed that when you talked to her? >> she did. she did. she also told him that she was not in agreement with it. that she was getting threatened by the inmates at that point. >> obviously the attorney for his wife saying mr. mitchell continues to standby his wife. is that the case or would he testify against her if it comes to that? >> i think that is a strong

comment. like i said lyle still cares about his wife but he realizes that he can't stand by her. that she's kind of made her own bed in this situation, and he's got to distance himself from that. he's cooperating with the police. he told the police everything that his wife has told him. whether or not any of that can come in is a real question of privilege. >> and obviously he can't go back to work in the immediate future because he does work at that prison where the investigation continues, correct? >> yeah he's out on administrative leave right now with pay, but that's one of the things he's worried about. he loved his job. he wants to go back and he wants to work there again. >> peter dumas, i appreciate your time this morning. thank you very much for talking to me. >> sure. >> can you imagine a man's world more turned upside down than

charleston, south carolina. nine people were killed last night when a gunman opened fire at the emanuel ame church in charleston south carolina known as "mother emanuel." police calling it a hate crime. police say the gunman was sitting inside a wednesday night bible study for nearly an hour. he was part of the study before he opened fire. the church pastor clementa pinckney dead also a state senator. pinckney's cousin spoke in the aftermath and described an disturbing account we should tell you what the survivor saw inside the church. >> i spoke one of the survivors and he said he reloaded five different times and her son was trying to talk him out of doing that act of killing people, and he -- he just said i have to do

it. he said you have taken over our country. you have to go. at the conclusion of the bible study, from what i understand they just start hearing loud noises ringing out, and he had already moved in -- the suspect had already moved a couple of individuals, including my cousin reverend clementa pinckney. >> the account passed along by one of the survivors. and the fact confirmed by the chief of police of charleston that the gunman did sit in the church for an awful long time and was interacting with the people before he opened fire. a manhunt underway for the gunman at large. described as a white man police say between the ages of 21 and 12525. 25. clint van zandt a contributor at nbc told matt there were 176

acts of violence inside houses of warshop last year. and 74 of those resulted in death. >> acts of violence in house of war worships. >> to me it's akin to a school shots. you go to a place that is supposed to be peaceful and visit unthinkable violence on families, on young children apparently in there. not among the dead, we don't think. >> a child survived. >> not just a random act. he got to know the people. he talked to them and then to do that. it's just unspeakable. >> what is also striking is the age of the suspect. authorities believe he could be in his early 20s, and when you think of these violent hate crimes you think we live in this multicultural world of understanding and acceptance, and if those words are correct

that he uttered to the innocent people in the church believing they were taking over his country, it's obviously despicable and authorities in south carolina say they will dedicate every person available in this search. obviously several authorities are now involved. we're thankful we have surveillance cameras in all places a church but thankfully the church was equipped with the surveillance camera. there's an image that is not a perfect image but authorities believe it is clear enough if anyone knows the individual they will recognize them. and they also have the vehicle and what seems to be a distinct marking on the license plate. so you got those images. we've seen so many times before, it only takes one person to say, sadly i know that person. >> and another element that speaks to the cold calculation of this. he let one woman survive and said to her "go tell people what i've done inside this church."

taking a look at the headlines specifically designed to prevent migraine headaches are showing significant promise. more than half the patients in preliminary studies saw at least a 50% reduction in the number of migraines they had each week. the new class of drugs appeared to have minimal side effects. an estimated 36 million americans suffer migraine attacks. they're more likely to strike women than men. transfats are used to improve taste and texture in processed foods may affect your memory. in a study at the san diego school of medicine, men who took a memory test saw their performance drop with each additional gram of transfat they consumed each day. just this week, the fda ordered

he was a sharp dresser he had a great smile. then i look at the pictures of him and the two of us standing together he's shorter than i am. he was a little guy. he was like a polly pocket but he was just this big person, and it was because he was generous in spirit. one of the greatest lessons i learned from my dad was to make sure your children know that you love them. he made sure at the end of every conversation over the phone i love you. if you were in person it was a hug and a kiss and an i love you. there's nothing better. i try to emulate him. i try to let my children know how much i love them. i'm a hugger. i like to go in for a hug and a kiss. i think much to the chagrin of many. there's kind of the side guy hug

huggers but with other men in your life, friends brothers-in-law huggers or handshakers? some guys don't want the hugs. i've become a big hugger. >> i love hugs. and you see guys embrace each other. there's an extra connection there. >> my dad was a bus driver for most of my childhood. in a way my youngest brother who was 16 years different had a different dad. he moved to transit dad. my dad worked in a bus depot and i got to ride the buss with him! i had a subway repair card so i got see the subway cars up on lifts. i had a great time. bus drivers were buying me candy and ice cream. my brother got to play with a xerox machine. >> but he got the management dad that meant more money. >> i got more time. my dad was a bus driver.

we're back on this thirsty thursday, and our series father's day favorites. earlier this week i shared the meal that reminds me of my daddy. >> by the way that was delicious. >> wasn't it good? >> my dad was a griller and he used to make these egyptian sliders that i can still remember the taste of to this day. dinner was really a special time when we were growing up. this is my brother adel, by the way. and here's why. >> he's going to be okay. >> every memory i have from childhood revolves around our table. and like you remember where each of us were sitting, my mom, my dad my sister my brother. our meals were together. and we knew as scattered as we were during the day, my parents were at work, we were at school or practice, when it came time for dinner, that's where you could find all five.
