shooting. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. this is a beautiful city but this morning they are nursing a shared wound. it'ser hard to put intoer words how full of grief and sadness the community is. this church is steeped if history. i stood at the base of it and thought how could it happen here? this is a sacred place. there are so many questions, so few answers. >> and what happened in charleston is the top story this morning. here's what we know. the sus peck 21 dylann roof will be in court for a bond appearancement he's this the charleston county detention centerer now. the victims range in aeng from 26 to 87. they are remembered as kind-hearted people who shared a love of family and faith. tonight, members of the community will come together again for a somber vigil to remember the victims, savannah. >> that's right.

of course all eyes will be on that courthouse looking for dylann roof later today when he faces a judge. let's start with nbc's chris jansing who was here from early hours. good morning. >> good morning. dylann roof will be facing a judger for the first time today as the city plans another memorial for tonight. roof are returned to the city he left this mourning wearing a bullet proof vest at one point flashing a smile. less than 24 hours after he left charleston dylann roof was back on a state plane. in handcuffs and a prison jump suit after awaiting extradition. book pded by the charleston county sheriff after going into a bible study, police believe, intent on killing blacks. >> this has no place in a civilized society. >> reporter: we are seeing what appears to be video inside the

bible study. check out the man on the right who appears to be roof. nbc news has not independently verified the video that mashable got from sanders's friend. dylann roof will have his first day in court for a bond hearing. arrested after a florist on her way to work recognized roof's car and distinctive hair cut from video. >> it's nothing to do with me. the lord had me where i needed to be on 74. he had me watching the news see all that. he did that. >> reporter: police say roof didn't resist when he was stopped nearly 250 miles away from the shooting site. he was arresteded twice before on dwrug drug and trespassing charges. roof was convicted of trespassing while the drug case was still pending. do you have an indication how somebody goes from two minor arrests to allegedly one of the worst mass killings in state history? >> trying to figurer that out. we don't have answers to that.

about why dylann roof would do what he's accused of doing. he's 21 years old. gabe gutierrez has been looking into his background. gabe good morning. >> good morning. this is where roof is being held. friends and family say he'd become a loner in recent years talking about segregation and having run-ins with the law. this morning a clearer picker temperature is emerging of dylann roof. >> stayed to himself. really low key. he was under the radar. >> reporter: this middle school friend said roof reached out to hip for the first type inime in five years and made troubling comments about race . >> he was saying he didn't agree with the trayvon martin case. he wanted segregation. he wanted white with white and black with black. he didn't believe in what the black race was doing to the white race. >> reporter: pictures on social media show roof on the hood of a car with a confederate flag and

wearing a jacket with the flag of apartheid era are south africa. friends say he was a good student but while repeating 9th grade he dropped returned. in february roof was arrested outside a mall after security reported he was going into school asking how many people were working and what time today closed. when approached police founder far cot ticks used to treat addiction and booked him for drug possession. that case is pending. now he's the suspect in a church massacre. a woman who spoke to a survivor said one of the victims tried to talk to roof while he was reloading. >> he said i have to do it. he said you rape our women, you are taking over our country. you have to go. >> reporter: after waiving extradition from north carolina roof is expected to appear in court this afternoon via vid quoeo

conference for a bond err inghearing. he doesn't have an attorney. his uncle said i hope he gets what's coming to him. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you so much. i got to talk to debbie dill who helped police track down dylann roof. she calleded her boss after seeing roof on the highway. i asked what was going through her mind when she realized it was him. >> i was nervous, scared. i'm normally not that kind of person. i got back on the bypass to go see if i could get a tag number just to see and make sure -- i just had a feeling. i'm sure that was divine intervention. i have said it before and i will say it againment i feel like god had a hand in it and he had me where i needed to be. he had todd there to help me get

through. i was nervous. i was scared. >> how did you feel when you found out after sending the license plate to todd and the police that yes, in fact, the authorities had caught him? >> very very nervous. i kind of had a feeling for those people in charleston. i had been praying for those people since i heard about the shootingment they were on my heart, on my mind heavy. i was praying and hoping maybe it would help them to find a little bit of peace in a terrible, horrific situation. >> debbie, with a does it mean to you that these families that are going through so much is have said they want justice. that's what they you are a piece of that happening to them. how does it feel? >> it wasn't me. it was god. he used me as a vessel. if anybody is a hero it's him. it was through him that

everything happened. it happened for a reason are. the people were praying. we see their pictures on interviews. they are in circles praying. they need to know and i know they know god heard their prayers. if he used todd and me as a vessel to do that that's good. i'm a willing vessel. whatever he wants. that's what matters the most. >> debbie and todd you are incredibly brave, quick-thinking and you made all the difference at an important hometown for your community. thank you for being here . >> thank you. >> thank you. >> one of the incredible stories of heroism to come out of the tragedy. i'm joined by governor nicky hailey. is he met with families of the victims. good morning. >> good morning. >> these are sad circumstances. i know you have spent time with the families and you seem to carry their grief in your public statements yesterday.

what does it say that in 2015 somebody walks into a church like this during bible study, sits there and shoots them one by one? >> i had to have a conversation with my son yesterday to try to explain why this happened. it's hard to the explain. this is the holy city. charleston is known as the holy city. we were named the friendliest state in the country. this doesn't happen here. that's the tone. this wasn't expected. we're just devastated by the fact that one individual would show so much hate in a state that loves each other. especially faithful prayerful. churches are sacred. the fact that it happened there is devastating. >> you mentioned the word hate. is there a doubt in your mind this is a hate crime? >> it's an absolute hate crime. they said they looked evil in the eye yesterday. this is hate. >> the government opened up an investigation into whether it is a hate crime.

state purees could pursue a case. so it is between the state and federal government. do you want him prosecuted in south carolina and do you think this is a death penalty case? >> without question yes. these are nine families that are struggling. this is a state hurt by the fact that nine people innocently were killed killeded. we absolutely want him to have the death penalty. we will fight as hard as we can. >> the president called you yesterday and made public remarks. he openly vented about pass violence and inner erparticular gun violence in this country. is there anything that makes you think is it time for change? >> any time there is a traumatic situation, people want something to blame. they always want something to go after. there is one person to blame here. a person felled with hate. a person that doesn't define south carolina. we are going to focus on that person. i know president obama has his

ills i can't imagine somebody goes from a regular citizen thomasto to massacring nine people. certainly people heard of this. they've got to come forward. in our society law enforcement doesn't have the ability to monitor or the right to monitor everything occurring within a community. it really is incumbent upon people who recognize this type of activity who see somebody acting oddly, they have to breng it forward. >> this might sound hypothetical. but if one of the people had gone to law enforcement and said my friend made comments like this. what could law enforcement have done done? >> there is a line of course between free speech and somebody who has done something elillegal. law enforcement probably would have talked to hipm.

perhaps somebody intervening might have caused him to question or perhaps he would have told law enforcement which would have changed this. it's not clear what could have happened. but the fact that people may have heard him talk about this in this day and age people is have people have to comer forward. >> i agree. sean thank you very much. a lot of news to get to. sheinelle is here with new information on those es ecaped convicts. >> the two killers who escaped have been added to the 15 most wanted fugitives lest. stephanie gosk is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. rier -- richard matt and david sweat have are eluded authorities for two weeks and are now on a most wanted list. richard matt and david sweat joined a dangerous club.

7:30 now on friday morning, the 19th of june 2015. there is a somber mood in charleston south carolina. nine people being mourned and remembered after they were killed while praying in church wednesday night. matt this is a community who has a wound that feels open and raw now. >> there is only one piece of good news. the suspect is off the street and in custody. i was listening to you talk to the governor of south carolina. it was interesting what she said about the form the prosecution might take. >> absolutely. first of all, she said this is a hate crime. she wants to see south carolina

back now at 7:37. on thursday nbc news announced brian williams, a 22-year veteran of the network would not return as the anchor of nbc nightly news. he steps down after revelations that on multiple occasions brian made inaccurate statements about his experiences on the field including a story about a military helicopter he was traveling in during the iraq war. brian sat down with me over the last two days to discuss how the distortions happened and what the past five months serving suspension would be. we both agreed there would be no conditions or guidelines on the interview. what have the past five months been like?

>> torture. looking back it's been absolutely necessary. i have discovered a lot of things. i have been listening to and watching what amount to the black box recordings from my career. i have gone back through everything. basically 20 years of public utterances. >> wiehy? did you have doubts about things you said over the years? >> i was reading newspaper stories not liking the person i was reading about. i would have given anything to get to the end of the story and have it be someone else. but it was about me. these statements i made. i own this. i own up to this. i had to go through and see and tie to figure out how it happened. >> you're a family man. personally what have these five months been like? >> it has been a time of

realization. trying to find out in me what changed. you know in our work i have always treated words very carefully. that's the coin of orur relalmrealm, our tool the key to our credibility and integrity. matt it is clear after work when i got out of the building when i got out of that realm i used a double standard. something changed. i was sloppier and i said things that weren't true. looking back that's plain. >> you say "sloppy." did you not deal with the reality that when you walked away from nbc, whether it was to appear on a late night talk show or some other venue, some other interview show that the title and the responsibilities of anchor/managing editor of "nightly news" traveled with

you? >> i think that's exactly it. looking back it had to is have been ego that made me think i had to be sharper, funnier, quicker than anybody else. put myself closer to the action having been at the action in the beginning. >> was it conscious, brian? let's go back to january when you went on "nightly news" and recounted a story about a military veteran who played a role in a harrowing chopper ride you took covering the iraqi war. you told the story and had told other versions of it. did you know it was not true? >> i told the story correctly for years before i told it incorrectly. i was not trying to mislead people. that to me is a huge difference here. after that incident i tried and

failed as others have tried and failed and why sitis it when we are trying to say "i'm sorry" we can't say "i'm sorry"? >> you say i wasn't trying to mislead people. did you know when you went on "nightly news" that you were telling a story that was not true? >> no. it came from a bad place. it came from a sloppy choice of words. i told stories that were not true over the years, looking back. it is very clear. i never intended to. it got mixed up . it got turned around in my mind. >> i worry as you say this brian, that people who will have listened to your apology on air and in other areas, facebook,er

you used terms like i was mistaken in my recollections and in other apologies, con flated aircraft. did you give thought at the time to going on air and saying "i lied" is this lied"? >> i know why people would see it that way. it's not what happened. what happened is the fall of a host of other sins. what happened is clearly part of my ego getting the better of me to put myself in a better light. to appear better than i was. that's the process here. >> not to put words inner eryour mouth but had you gone on air and said folks, i lied i'm sorry. do you think the outcome would have been different? do you think forgiveness would have come sooner? >> i think perhaps, yes.

me er for father's day later. >> and we can eat. >> always good. they said you just have to eat. sign me up. >> we have a great father's day surprise as well. we start with a terrible story from charleston. the suspect in wednesday's shooting dylann roof has confessed to the crimes. confession is a positive piece of evidence for the authorities. there will still be a trial but it is a big piece of evidence. police say he shot and killed nine people inside the emmanuel african methodist episcopal church near the heart of the tourist district. the nine victims ranged in age from 26 to 87. in fact one of the few survivors was a 5-year-old little girl. there was a vigil in charleston. roof arrested in shelby north carolina. actually spotted by a woman who recognized him from the news. thought she recognized the car and said i knew it by the hair cut. she saw it in the surveillance picture. >> you talked to her.

to a developing story, a house fire in philadelphia's germantown section is under control, but there's still no indication if a victim is possibly inside this building. nbc 10 on bloyd avenue where crews battled flames for several hours this morning. firefighters tried but could not enter the home because it is boarded up from the inside. one official called it the worst case of hoarding that he's ever seen. we're told the house may have to be torn down just to see if there's anyone inside. and the philadelphia delegation for the world meeting of families will leave for rome sunday afternoon. mayor nutter archbishop shahwill iron out details for the event and the visit in september. count on coverage of the trip nbc 10's chris cato will head to rome ahead of the delegation and will leave from philadelphia later today. he'll have reports from the vatican beginning this weekend

that breaking news is a death of a pioneer of cable television. ralph roberts, the comcast founder passed away last night of natural causes. he was 95 years old. he founded comcast in 1963 and grew the company from a small, regional cable company into a media giant. cnbc's tyler mathisen looks back at roberts' life. >> reporter: ralph roberts was born in comfort in 1920. >> my father was a manufacturing chemist, who also owned a thain of drugstores. >> reporter: life changed for the boy from new york first the depression then his father's early passing.
