focused on the adirondack mountains, close to where it all began. it comes less than 24 hours after a sighting of two men fitting the convicted killers' descriptions had police searching in friendship new york. >> female reporting that she saw two males, possibly matching the description of the fugitives. >> there was two people. >> reporter: that or the cape from brandy thompson. >> they were just coming out. my dog barked. they turn around and ran back down. >> reporter: by nightfall the efforts came up empty. >> i hope they get them. >> reporter: meanwhile nbc news learned the investigation of prison workers is expanding. already joyce mitchell is charged with giving then some of the tools they used to cut through steel walls and pipes. several guards are under investigation and one, gene palmer has been put on administrative leave. his attorney said palmer had ex tensive convicts with the

escapees and mitchell but didn't have add ransed knowledge of the prison break. >> he plans to be forthcoming with information that can help in the capture of mr. sweat and mr. matt. >> reporter: the new york state police is getting help from neighbors and the vermont state police. a special tactical unit trained the if thengs like barricade situations and active shooters. savannah? >> john are yang on the trail for us. thank you so much. clint van zandt is a former fbi profiler. good morning. >> hi. >> we have two sightings now. one western new york on saturday. another 24 hours later, 300 miles away. sit credible that both of the sightings could be confirmed? >> well this is what law enforcement has to determine. number one, savannah there is no information. a car was stolen. any means of transportation once they popped out of the manhole.

so if they only had one plan and that was joyce mitchell and she failed to show up safe money says they are still around that prison somewhere. the only way they could get from point a to point b perhaps is riding the rails. you know hopping off and on freight trains as they pass through the area. but, again, though law enforcement has to run down every tip, i think there is something in people involved in the search that says they haven't got out of this area. if we keep pressing these cabins houses woods, we are going to find these two. >> say the cabin sighting is a con if i wered one. if they spent time in the cabin at all one imagines there is a treasure trove of forensic-type evidence for investigators to grab onto. >> it should be easy. you have to go in find fingerprints and dna of people who have the right to be in the cabinment you exclude that and obviously you are looking for the prints of the two fugitives. so they are the search dogs.

they are using bloodhounds that would have the scent of these two. they ought to pick that up up fairly quickly. savannah there are hundreds of houses homes, cabins places to hide. you can go in and search one, move to the next. these guys can circle behind you and come back into the house you just searched. >> before i let you go are you surprised there is no report of a carjacking hold-ups any kind of home invasion? there's no sign of them at all. >> these are all things you have said what we normally hear with an escaped prison -- that they have to have toes the things to take care of themselves. either somebody else helped them or they were able to get in one location hunker down and they are still there. they know if you steal a car, break into a house and it's found that you are going to have 800 cops come on you in one location at one time. so being out 17 days is a

walking in a massive unity chain sunday night, just hours after mother emmanuel church opened its doors for the first worship service since the tragedy. >> a lot of folks expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. well they just don't know us. >> reporter: among the crowd south carolina's governor one of its senators and the long-time mayor of charleston. >> it broke our hearts in chars ton, -- charleston but it's broken hearts in america. >> reporter: some who lost loved ones like lana simmons just had to be there. >> my grandfather loved charleston. to see what an example they have been to the nation his heart would be so full. victim. including the church where the alleged shooter's family went. >> we are amazed at the fringe benefits forgiveness they have expressed in an open way. >> reporter: over the weekend more disturbing images of 21-year-old dylann roof, posing with guns confederate flags and at sites dedicated to the history of the confederacy. there is a 2500-word manifesto that lays out his po tif perhaps for mass murder. sources attributed it to roof but it has not been verified to nbc news with quotes leek "someone has to have the bravery to take toyota the realer world with and i guess that has to be me." roof's obsession with the confederate are flag has inspired a petition to remove it from all government locations in north carolina.

joe fryer is there. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning. firefighters are gradually making progress. temperatures are ex expected to drop a little bit today which should help. the forest fire consumed more than 17,000 acres and this morning it is just 19% contained. firefighters are bracing for another long day battling a stubborn fire on a steep mountain. >> if you look at the he will itill behind me it's steep sthrks 2,000 firefighters have been called in. they are attacking flames feeding on old growth trees perched atop peaks in the san bernardino national forest. some spots are so rugged they can't be reechd on the ground. >> we are helicoptering crews this so they can get up in the morning and start fighting the fire again. >> reporter: it is a scene playing out across the western u.s. where the land is dry and the weather is hot and windy.

parliament building in afghanistan is the biggest taliban offensive since u.s. forces handed over security to afghan troops this year. kier simmons is following developments from london for us. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. the attack began in the morning with a suicide bombing. then an attempt to storm parliament which was pushed back. a government spokesperson said 31 civilians have been wounded including five women and three children. on live television -- an explosion rocks afghanistan'ser erer parliament. smoke and screams fill the chamber. outside, a massive car bomb had been detonated. from four sides taliban militants attack. a huge fire cape up from the building, this man says. the country's democracy targeted. defended only by guards. this morning lawmakers had been voting for a new defense

minister. >> the message to the americans and nato you're out of here. we're going to show you what we can do. in other provinces the taliban is also on the offensive. >> reporter: afghan special forces arrived while a local school was with evacuated. the taliban fighting back from a disused building. many have now been killed officials say, after an attack that shook parliament and will send shock waves around the world. the ministry said the attack includes seven taliban fighters and all seven have been killed. to lawmakers were harmed. the key is how did the taliban get so close? >> scary. thank you, keir. searchers in new mexico found the body of a former white house executive chef who was missing for nine days. walter scheib disappeared in in the mountains of new mexico. his body was discovered sunday off a trail. there were no obvious signs of
