nbc 10 first alert weather breaking news. dangerous heat and humidity will return today and it will be even hotter than yesterday. plus, the nbc 10 first alert radar is tracking severe storms ahead. and the plan for the world meeting of families in philadelphia is taking shape. nbc 10 is live in rome where city leaders are about to announce the performers who will welcome pope francis to the city of brotherly love. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. a first alert is in effect this morning because of the heat and threat of severe storms. meteorologist bill henley has the details in the first alert forecast. bill? >> temperatures in the 70s right now, close to where they were yesterday. but this afternoon is going to be hotter and more humid and

that will likely lead to severe weather this afternoon. a line of storms we're watching this morning just to the north and west. the heat will be in the 90s this afternoon and near record territory. then the severe storms potentially damaging winds, even a threat of tornadoes later today. radar shows nothing in the area just yet but look to the northwest. you can see the line of showers moving towards northwestern pennsylvania at this hour. the temperatures are in the 70s to start with. 78 degrees in northeast philadelphia and 75 in wilmington. the temperatures will be climbing into the 80s by 9:00. by lunch time 90 degrees. we'll go through the future weather hour by hour to show you when the storms are likely to move in when i'm back in ten minutes. >> thanks, bill. the city offed if is taking steps to protect folks from the katy zachry has been making calls to the city to find out what's happening today. she's live in logan square in center city.

katy? >> reporter: hi rosemary. late yesterday i did get an e-mail as many media outlets did from the city's health commissioner, jeff moran. i also talked to him on the phone yesterday. he along with the national today with the high temperatures and the humidity we're expecting, they are calling for a heat advisory. now if we go to some of our video, you can see scenes like this are not too far off. the heat advisory for philadelphia begins at 11:00 a.m. and lasts through 6:00 p.m. that is because of the high temperatures, coupled with the high humidity. it could be dangerous for some people. specifically the older population, young children and people who are pregnant. we do have some tips for how you can stay cool. to avoid being -- having adverse effects from the heat you should not go outside during the heat of the day. do not play or work outside during the heat of the day if possible. wear a hat if you do have to go outside. wear light, loose fit clothing

right now we're on the schuylkill expressway approaching the vine street expressway. you can see they have seens here blocking off the road. we just had police activity here as ed?qwell being another form of blockage. the vine street expressway is dealing with ongoing construction on the westbound and eastbound side. they'll be diverting traffic off around broad street if you're headed westbound. follow the local detours through the area. they have signs posted and you should do just fine. as for the rest of our drive times around the philadelphia area 95 southbound to woodhaven road to the vine no problems on the schuylkill headed eastbound. a 12-minute trip. the blue route, doing fine as well. preparing for the pope means top-notch entertainment. right now in rome officials are announcing the musical acts for the world meeting of families. a news conference started a few minutes ago at the pontifical north american college.

center vai sikahema, nbc 10. >> looking forward to it. thanks, vai. police are investigating a shooting in north philadelphia from overnight. nbc 10 was on the scene at 8th street and lehigh avenue where officers found 15 shell casings. a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg. two cars parked along the street were hit by stray bullets as well. so far, no arrests in this case. we have new information on a hit and run crash from last night in philadelphia's hunting park section. investigators say the driver of a red ford f-150 pickup truck did not 1207 when he hit a man who was riding a bicycle avenue. the victim remains in critical condition at temple hospital. a driver will not face charges after crashing her suv into this house in philadelphia. it happened on caster avenue and loney street last night. witnesses tell us the driver of the blue jeep cherokee first hit a car and crashed into this

brickhouse. a 19-year-old woman with special needs and a nurse were trapped inside the bedroom. a man inside the other car that was hit tells nbc 10 thavç he rushed in to save them. >> like the woman was under there screaming, yelling, she was pinned in between the car and the wall. i was able to pull her out. when she got out she was so relieved and her first concern was the well-being of a little child. >> police say remarkably the injuries were not serious. the gaping hole in the house is now boarded up. the family tells us they're waiting to hear from their insurance company before making repairs. a fight may be the motive behind a shooting that injured seven people including three children in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. the gunman may have opened fire along allegheny avenue in retaliation to a fight that happened earlier in the day. two of the victims are in critical condition. the other victims were treated at hospitals and released. the three children who were hurt

as shotgun pellets dented walls and hit a kiddie pool. >> think about the kids before doing what he did. >> police did find a shotgun near the scene. as for the gunmen police have a vague description. the shooting in kensington comes on the heels of another neighborhood shooting. over the weekend ten people were shot at a block party in west philadelphia. three of the victims were children. it happened saturday night on ogden street. police are searching for the two gunmen responsible. nbc 10 reached out to philadelphia police to find out how many shootings there have been in the city this year. so far, police have logged 450 shootings in 2015. that's compared to 463 at this time last year. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> just about ten minutes after 4:00.

76 degrees. we're temperaturewise, about the same as yesterday. the humidity is already increasing and we will see near record heat this afternoon. 97 is the record. it will feel hotter than that thanks to the high humidity. heat humidity fueling severe storms later today. the threat of damaging winds can't rule out tornado activity later today. relief is on the way. you'll start feeling it overnight tonight. right now 70 in reading, philadelphia 77 degrees. trenton is at 71 degrees. a warm start and a hot afternoon. not much of a breeze right now. what breeze will be blowing is going to be a warm muggy one today. live view of center city where the temperatures are still cooling at this point. likely not to go much cooler during the day today. afternoon temperatures 90s for allentown, reading and quakertown. afternoon showers and thunderstorms will bring the numbers down.big warmup will happen this morning and earl i this afternoon from norristown trenton and mt. holly.

90s for cape may and rehoboth. serious storms roll through during the afternoon. before the storms arrive the temperatures will top out in the low to mid-90s for swedesboro, wilmington and philadelphia today. the wet weather to follow that is visible on the radar. it's off to the north and west right now, moving into northwestern pennsylvania. these are strong storms. they'll make steady progress toward our area. the hour-by-hour future weather shows 9:00 this morning scattered showers in the pocono mountains and heavy downpours are possible as we go into the early afternoon hours. that's 2:00 in the afternoon. these are going to be fast-moving showers. you can see them in the philadelphia area at 3:00. another batch to the west could impact the evening commute. and with these storms the potential for damaging winds. severe thunderstorms are likely to pop up this afternoon. a look at the relief that's on

there are fears this morning that famous hollywood composer james horner died in a plane crash. the single engine plane registered to horner went down in southern california yesterday. nobody has heard from horner since the crash. tributes have been pouring in on social media in the meantime. horner is known for his work in movies such as "titanic" and "braveheart." an isis leader linked to the 2012 benghazi attack is dead after a u.s.-led air strike. the department of defense says the militant killed was a person of interest in the attack on the u.s. diplomatic compound that

ended with the death of the u.s. ambassador to libya. three other americans were also killed. amerac@n officials say this latest air strike degrades isis's efforts to integrate north african jihadists into the syrian/iraqi fight. new information this morning in the growing controversy over the confederate flag in the south. a mississippi lawmaker says that his state should consider taking the confederate symbol off the state flag. overnight mississippi house speaker phillip gunn released a statement call for the confederate symbol to be removed. mississippi includes the confederate battle standard. the dispute over the confederate flag gained national attention after pictures of the charleston church gunman with the flag became public. since then south carolina governor nikki haley, publicly called for the removal of the confederate flag from the state's capitol grounds. >> the fact that it causes pain

to so many is enough to move it from the capitol grounds. it is after all, a capitol that belongs to all of us. >> the state's house and senate must first approve the flag's removal. the governor is urging state legislators to act quickly. walmart says its stars are removing all items containing images of the confederate flag. the arkansas-based chain says the company doesn't want to offend anyone with the products we offer. the trial begins today for a chester county high school teacher and athletic coach accused of having sex with a female student. investigators say that mark hos hostutler take a 17-year-old to his home on several occasions where he gave her alcohol and had sex with her. he was arrested this past february and posted bail the following month. also today, the trial is expected to begin in the case of a dui crash that killed a student athlete from delaware

county. jonathan vanderhorst is charged with homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence. he struck and called this 18-year-old in january of 2014 when his car hit another vehicle and jumped the cushion to the sidewalk. de-simon died. another team walking along the sidewalk with desimon was injured in the crash. today, emergency medical staff at temple university hospital will be recognized for their response following the amtrak derailment. the secretary of the pennsylvania department of health will present a certificate of recognition commending the staff for their service following the may 12th crash. that's when an amtrak train traveling over 100 miles an hour derailed in philadelphia's port richmond section. seven people died 200 others injured. temple took on more passengers from the disaster than any other emergency room in the city.

a group of teachers parents and students from philadelphia is heading to harrisburg this morning to join a statewide rally on education funding. protesters camped out on the steps of the capitol yesterday, calling for a solution to the state's education funding crisis. it planned to stay there over the next several days with the deadline for the state budget one week away. advocates want the legislature to adopt a fair funding formula for pennsylvania's 500 school districts. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. 19 minutes after 4:00. like yesterday, we're getting another warm start this morning. and unlike yesterday, the humidity is already higher and going to be staying higher through today. 77 degrees currently, the humidity is at 76%. steamy afternoon ahead with temperatures in the middle 90s today. that's a live view of center city. quiet right now. no storms in the area right now

but we'ruç watching the radar screen. you can see what's on the way. it's a line of storms that extends from new york into the hey high valley. within this line of storms a very heavy rainfall approaching cleveland, moving across lake erie erie. that's the line of storms that will bring our temperatures down this afternoon. unfortunately it could come with severe weather. look at the 90s, allentown, pottstown, millville. the showers at 2:00 are off to the north and west according to the computer model. the heavier downpours lead into the afternoon commute. loaning what that does to the temperatures, it drops them into the 70s for areas farther north and west and philadelphia will briefly drop into the 70s and settle down in the low 80s after 6:00 this evening when the storms quickly push offshore. but with those storms could come some damaging winds today. be on the lookout for severe

thunderstorms this afternoon. until we get there, hot, humid conditions and afternoon temperatures in the lower to upper 90s this afternoon. southwesterly winds helping to push the humidity right in here and bring the temperatures up. but a dramatic change ahead for the weekend. 70s saturday and sunday. a chance of showers saturday mostly cloudy and a possibility of showers on sunday. both days high temperatures in the lower 70s. some of the cooler weather arrives even before the weekend. i've got the timing of that with the seven-day forecast in the next half hour. >> thanks bill. 4:21 on this tuesday. let's get a check of the traffic from jessica boyington. the weather not going to be a problem for drivers heading into work this morning. jessica? >> right now we're not dealing with a lot of volume. we're in new jersey on 295 around the black horse pike. the southbound side everything is moving along just fine. that's typically where we'd see volume later on in the commute. drive times hardly affected.

we are seeing that ongoing construction on the northbound side. you can see some crews right here, lane restrictions, one lane getting through the area. just something to watch out for if you're headed down 295 this morning. as for another check on new jersey on the 42 freeway, we look at the drive times. they're doing just fine. you can see the cars moving along just fine. yellow right here headed towards the walt whitman bridge. for the rest of the area bridges, no problems heading in or out of philadelphia. rosemary? >> thank you, jessica. general mills is dropping artificial colors and flavors from its cereal. something to consider as you get ready for that morning breakfast. trix and reese's puffs will make the change. lucky charms will take longer to reformulate. general mills' goal is remove artificial ingredients from 90% of its cereals by the end of next year.

millionaires in new jersey could pay more taxes under a new 2016 budget plan. yesterday, new jersey democrats laid out their $35 billion budget. it includes a one-time 15% surcharge on the corporate business tax and an increase on anybody making more than a million dollars a year. a vote is expected a little bit later on this week but governor chris christie is expected to use his veto powers to cut out the ser!im9hr(t&háhp &hc > also out of new jersey

lawmakers advanced a bill to overhaul the state's election law yesterday. the bill was unveiled last week. if approved, residents of the garden state could be automatically enrolled to vote when they apply for a driver's license. now to decision 2016 and more results from an nbc news/"wall street journal" poll on the race for the white house. 75% of democratic voters picked hillary clinton as their top choice. she leads her closest competitor bernie sanders by 60 points. jim webb has not announced whether or not he's running yet. he's a close third. marten o'malley got 2% of the vote. here are the top four republicans, former florida governor jeb bush leads the pack with 22 points followed by scott walker with 17 points, marco rubio with 14 and ben carson with 11. new jersey governor chris christie has not announced whether he would run but he only
