cobiella who's got the latest for us. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah and matt. french investigators are treating this as a terrorist attack on an american gas factory in southeastern france. the company called air products it is a gruesome scene. one person reportedly decapitated with islamic flags placed nearby. two others were injured, and one man is under arrest. this morning french president francois hollande says the attackers intended to blow up the building. >> reporter: france is once again on high alert this morning after an attack at a gas factory in the southeast of the country. one man has been killed and several injured. french media reports that the attackers, possibly two men, crashed their car into the factory, hitting gas canisters and setting off an explosion. a body was reportedly found near the factory entrance along with islamic banners. a 30-year-old, reportedly known to security officials, has been

arrested. >> the main thing that we need to know is is this an isolated incident or is it part of maybe a bigger scheme? >> reporter: recently isis has called for more terror attacks during ramadan. french police already stretched after the terrorist attacks earlier this year in paris are preparing for more lone wolf attacks. french media is reporting that the man in custody this morning is a 30-year-old who is known to security officials. nbc news has not been able to independently verify that but he is reportedly being questioned but apparently is not talking. now, there is this question of a second accomplice as well. we've heard nothing from french officials in terms of whether he is still at loose or he was among the injured. we're expecting to hear from the french interior minister at any moment. and one final note savannah and matt this factory was apparently on code red. they had been prepared and

braced for a possible attack. >> kelly cobiella thank you so much. let's turn to michael leiter. mike, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> when you hear what we hear and these details are just coming in now, to you does this bear the hallmarks of an attack either directedly isis or at least inspired by isis? >> absolutely. really in every way. obviously the beheading, the use of the arabic flag which might represent isis itself and also the targeting of a gas facility. this is something that extremists in the middle east and in iraq have always viewed as a good target to try to gain secondary explosions. so i think this is almost certainly, with early reports, isis inspired if not directed. >> and we all remember of course the "charlie hebdo" attacks of almost six months ago now. the fact that france is once again the target, what do you make of that? >> well france has really had a very strained relationship between its muslim community and

non-muslim community for many years. and that has driven at the very extreme edges, a real affinity for isis. and i think what we've seen in france over the past six months is repeated attacks and also an attempt by the french authorities to get on top of this and strengthen their laws for surveillance. but this is going to be an ongoing effort by the french and i expect that we will see more small attacks like this regardless of what sort of laws and pressure that police put on these groups. >> and mike once again, this is a particularly ghastly attack. you have of course the explosions but we're hearing word of a beheading. there are reports this morning out of france about some writing, arabic writing placed on the decapitated body of this victim. what is the allure of this particular type of violence for these isis-inspired groups? >> well there are really two things about beheadings. first, it garners a lot of attention. this is being covered this morning. it is so gruesome and so terrorizes terrorists know that and it gets attention. that's what they want.

second, adherencets believe this is commanded by the koran. and scholars have repeatedly said this is not the case. but unfortunately this just shows how really bereft of any civility these groups are. >> mike leiter always good to get your expertise, thank you very much. >> thanks. we've got another story that's breaking overnight. a sightseeing plane crashes in alaska killing all nine people on board. those passengers were actually from a cruise ship. this was an excursion. ktuu is near the scene. blake, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. nine people are dead eight passengers and one pilot. search and rescue officials say it appears that the plane crashed into a cliff about -- a 50-foot cliff before coming to rest on a 60% slope at the base of that cliff. due to poor weather yesterday, police say that they were not able to recover the bodies. they're hoping to do that today. the names of the victims have not yet been released. this morning search teams will

begin recovery efforts for a sightseeing plane that crashed in southeastern alaska on thursday. killing the pilot and all eight passengers on board. officials with the ntsb say that the de havilland otter airplane crashed in an area of steep mountainous terrain about 25 miles northeast of ketchikan. a spokesperson for the faa says the single-engine prop plane crashed under unknown circumstances. weather conditions in the area were reported as heavily overcast with wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. the plane operated by promech air was running an excursion for eight passengers from a cruise line ship. it left seattle on june 20th for a seven-day round-trip cruise. holland america released a statement, saying in part we are incredibly distressed by the situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with those on board the plane and their families. while the president of promech air released a statement saying "there is nothing i can say that can alleviate the pain and

overwhelming sense of loss that we and the loved ones of those affected are feeling. at this moment all of us share in the pain and anguish of this terrible event." now, weather permitting three members of an ntsb go team will arrive here in ketchikan later this morning. once on the ground they hope to head out to the crash site to begin an investigation for the cause of the crash that killed nine people. back to you, matt savannah. >> blake essig, thank you very much. to politics now. hillary clinton finding herself facing some new questions this morning over e-mails from her time as secretary of state. the state department now acknowledging the archives that she gave them was incomplete. here's nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker. >> reporter: since announcing her candidacy, hillary clinton has been dogged by questions about her use of a private e-mail account while serving as secretary of state. >> i have said repeatedly i want those e-mails out. nobody has a bigger interest in getting them released than i do. >> reporter: and this morning,

fresh scrutiny after the state department confirms some e-mails were missing from the materials she turned over to lawmakers investigating the 2012 attack in benghazi. special committee chairman trey gowdy said the revelation these messages were not originally produced to the state department by clinton is significant and troubling. clinton campaign officials are pushing back saying clinton has handed over all of her work-related e-mails saying she has turned over 55,000 pamges of materials. the revelation surfaced thursday when the state department confirmed that it was missing all or part of 15 e-mails that had been turned over to congressional investigators by longtime clinton confidante sidney blumenthal. blumenthal who had business in the region did not work at the state department but often provided clinton with information about libya. some of that which clinton circulated to her team. blumenthal had written e-mails to clinton about libya prior to the benghazi attack and recently testified on capitol hill.

the controversy continues to be a political liability for clinton with the majority of americans saying she's not honest and straightforward, and it's giving republicans plenty of fodder. >> it seems like you ought to have the ability to know where your e-mails are. >> reporter: pressing questions that continue to resurface as the 2016 campaign ramps up. for "today," kristen welker nbc news. >> chuck todd is nbc's political director and of course the moderator of "met the press." hi chuck. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> it doesn't seem as if it's the content of these e-mails that's significant. what's significant is this adds fuel to the fire for critics who say hillary clinton is not someone who acts with transparency. >> well right. and this is what has taken a toll on her. you saw kristen mention those poll numbers. this has been an issue since the start of her campaign and the revelation about this e-mail server where a majority of americans don't believe she's honest and trustworthy. but here's the other part of

this matt. it hasn't impacted her on any other part of her poll standing with democrats, in particular but even overall, you look at our last poll she's still the most popular presidential candidate that we test. she still leads all other republicans. and democrats are fine with it. but what this does do this new revelation is it gives house republicans more fuel and more reason to continue their investigation. >> a bit of a potpourri for you today. >> you got it. >> another subject. on thursday the supreme court handed the obama administration another victory on the affordable care law. this is the second time in three years the court has upheld the affordable care act now. but this isn't the last we're going to hear of it, is it? >> it's not the last. look this is going to be a huge part of the republican presidential campaign message. all the republican presidential candidates yesterday were almost tripping over each other, saying this is why the presidential election this is your last chance to stop obamacare. we're going to make the general election about that.

it guarantees that whoever the republican nominee is whether it's a more moderate republican like jeb bush or a really conservative republican like ted cruz all of them are going to have the same stance on this. but i have to tell you, privately, congressional republicans are relieved by the decision because they didn't want to have to redo the law and find a makeshift way to get subsidies to people that needed it. >> real quickly, maybe putting you on the spot here it was a 6-3 decision. can we read anything in terms of tea leaves and get some idea of what the court might be thinking on another big decision they're expected to come out with maybe even today on same-sex marriage? >> look i think if you followed anthony kennedy, a lot of gay rights supporters have always believed there have always been five votes to legalize same-sex marriage. the question though is is it going to be a full legalization or a split decision where all states have to recognize marriages from all states but not all states have to grant same-sex marriage. that's to me the only sort of

drama here as we wait for the decision. >> all right, chuck todd. chuck, thank you very much. it's going to be another emotional day in charleston south carolina as reverend clementa pinckney a state senator and beloved pastor at the emanuel ame church is laid to rest. last night hundreds of people stood in line for hours to attend a viewing at the church where pinckney and eight others were killed. and today president obama will deliver the eulogy at pinckney's funeral. lester holt is in charleston for our coverage. lester good morning to you. this is an emotional moment. the president new clementa pinckney personally dating back to his first campaign for president. what do you expect from the president's speech today? >> reporter: well we're told that the president is not going to make some sweeping remarks or policy speech about gun violence or race relations in this country, but he's mindful certainly that the country will be watching him with a sense of looking for him to perhaps give voice to the pain and frustration that we see here. people right now filing past the

emanuel church mother emanuel church as it's known around here. behind me they're going to the arena where the funeral for senator pinckney will be held. it seats about 5,400 people. they set up extra viewing spaces in other locations here in the community, expecting many more people to want to pay their respects. he was a powerful figure around here. not only of course a political figure as a longtime state senator, but also the pastor of this church. and as you noted, a friend of the president. mrs. obama will also be making the trip along with vice president biden and dr. biden. we're also told that hillary clinton, former secretary of state, presidential candidate, will also be attending here today. this is one of many funerals that this community will see over the next several days as it continues to say good-bye and to deal with the pain of all this. savannah? >> it's been such an outpouring there. lester thank you so much. and we should mention nbc news will have special coverage of the president's eulogy today, and lester will have much more from charleston tonight on "nbc nightly news." we turn now to natalie

morales. and you've got more on this search for these two escapees in upstate new york. 21 days? >> yeah now into its third week. authorities have no reason to believe that a ron in upstate new york was knowingly involved in that escape plot. guards gene palmer is accused of passing tools to inmates richard matt and david sweat. nbc's stephanie gosk is in dannemora, new york with the very latest. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. gene palmer told investigators in a statement that he broke prison rules. he brought contraband in. he accepted gifts. but it never says that he knew matt and sweat were getting ready to escape. and the d.a. says that so far there's no evidence that he knew. the second prison employee to be arrested in the jaw-dropping prison break didn't go to his hearing on thursday. he's getting new counsel. his first attorney says the case is too big to handle for a small-time lawyer. >> there are people parked outside of my house. there's people going to the

office. we're just not equipped to deal with that. i'm a small attorney. >> reporter: gene palmer a guard at clinton for 27 years, is facing charges in connection with richard matt and david sweat's escape earlier this month. in a sworn statement to the new york state police palmer says he provided the inmates with paint and paintbrushes a flat-head screwdriver and needle-nose pliers and access to the catwalk behind their cells. they later used that catwalk for their escape route. all part of a sometimes complex relationship between prison guards and inmates. in this case palmer told investigators he helped the two inmates in exchange for matt's paintings and information on other prisoners breaking the rules. stloo >> it may be the normal course of business that was occurring at the jail. it's improper. it violates the rules and procedures of the department of corrections. and so those are issues that we're going to deal with. >> reporter: almost three weeks of this intense manhunt, it's estimated to cost about a

million dollars a day. and it's having an effect here on this summer vacation community. two summer camps for kids say they are now going to delay their opening because of safety concerns. natalie? >> stephanie gosk in new york again, thanks steph. well taxi drivers in paris blocked roads, set fires and clashed with police on thursday as they stepped up their protests against online ride-sharing service uber. police in riot gear used tear gas to try and disperse the protesters. taxi drivers say uber threatens their jobs. french president francois hollande expressed sympathy for the drivers but called the dmen demonstrations unacceptable. while being chased in oxnard california. watch the top of your screen as the suspect runs across the rooftop and literally jumps from one building to the next. he just barely hangs on to the edge of the roof there and then pulls himself up. the chase lasted about 15 minutes before he was finally

taken into custody. and a massive sinkhole in hawaii swallowed up a pickup truck on thursday. residents say they woke up to the sound of rushing water, and they scrambled to move their cars away from this water main break. but the owners of the pickup couldn't reach it in time. as the road buckled underneath it the truck, as you see there, just sank right into the raging water. after more than two hours, the pickup -- they pulled it out of the sinkhole. and as we mentioned here earlier on "today," frightening moments this week during a dress rehearsal for an illusionist show called "the supernaturalist." this happened at the foxwoods casino in connecticut. criss angel can be seen rushing to the aid of spencer horseman who was unconscious and trapped in a water-filled cage hanging about 30 feet above ground. horseman was revived. he's expected to be okay recovering now. and thursday night's show was postponed until tonight. just so scary there. horseman by the way, was on "america's got talent."

around the world. it follows a reported instagram post last week by a univision executive of trump alongside one of charleston shooter dylann roof with the caption "no comments." that post has since been removed. now miss usa cohost roselyn sanchez and christian de la fuente are bowing out. >> it is a shame that such an important institution as miss usa is in the hands of a clown. >> reporter: as is performer jay balvin. still trump isn't backing down, refusing to apologize and vowing litigation. >> and the problem that univision has with me is that i'm honest about trade, and i'm honest about the border, and so therefore they violated a contract. >> reporter: in a statement pageant partner nbc universal said donald trump's opinions do not represent those of nbc, and we do not agree with his positions on a number of issues including his recent comments on immigration. last week trump's comments made headlines. not all of them positive. on twitter, latin celebrities like ricky martin condemned

we're back at 7:41. time for a timely "rossen reports onreport s s" warning. fourth of july is next weekend, lots of people will be attending fireworks shows or launching your own. jeff rossen is about to show us what can happen when those displays go wrong. he's out on the national mall in washington this morning. hey, jeff good morning. >> reporter: hey, guys good morning to you. hey, savannah. yeah we're here for a live demonstration, a pretty powerful one with takeaways for you and your family. we have watermelons with fireworks. this could be your arm, your head. if you come over this way with me we have another setup over here where we're going to blow up another mannequin. this could be you again leaning over a firework as well. we have all of this coming up to show you the sheer power of this. plus also a hidden danger about this. my kids have used it. these sparklers.

this morning a new warning out. all of that in just a moment. first these dangerous accidents caught on tape you need to see. >> oh! >> reporter: you're watching a fireworks misfire in california. >> run! run! >> reporter: the display malfunctioned, sending projectiles everywhere. a few dozen spectators injured. as this fireworks show in pennsylvania another botched launch, injuring 11. six more hurt at a graduation ceremony. fireworks gone wrong again. and it's not just big displays turning tragic. many people are injured at home. this baby girl severely burned when kids down the street playing with fireworks accidentally shot one in her direction. the firecracker exploded in her play rocker. >> it shot from here through here up there. >> reporter: thankfully she survived. this teen hit by another firework. her legs badly burned. >> i saw the flash. my friends started running.

>> reporter: now new numbers out this morning showing fireworks deaths rose in 2014. nearly a dozen killed and sending more than 10,000 people to the hospital. those numbers are sobering and that's why we're here. by the way, right off the top, state laws vary. some states allow fireworks. other states don't allow fireworks. other states still allow some fireworks. so check your state laws before you do anything. that said let's get right to this live demonstration. we're going to start right here with this. it's called an m-1,000. people are actually making these at home based on youtube videos and buying them illegally. we have the watermelon here that's going to basically play the role of you. we're going to run this way. we have to run about 1,000 feet this way because we have to keep a safe distance. that's how dangerous they are. thomas is right over here. thomas with our detonator. are we good? we're ready? >> ready. >> here we go. let's take that tight shot of the watermelon to see what this can do. fire. i mean you see, from the moment

he hit that detonator, how fast that happens, within a second. i want to bring in the chairman of the consumer products safety commission elliott kay. thanks for joining us and running this demonstration for us. >> good morning. >> what did we just see and what can i take away from this at home? >> what we saw is a professional-grade firework. they're far more potent and their fuse time is far shorter. you've got about six to nine seconds to get away. you don't on these and that's the matter of life and death. >> people are still buying these illegally from some of these tents on the side of the road. >> they are. and the whole point is we want consumers to leave these type of fireworks to the professionals. >> got it. we have another one to show you. right back over here as you can see, we have this mannequin that's standing over what's called a tube aerial. when you see the macy's fireworks and cities and town doing it, this is what the professionals use. let's get our detonator ready to see what can happen when you lean over a firework. ready? fire. look at that. he's actually on fire. do we need a fire extinguisher? everything's fine but that can

happen and people have died this way. >> absolutely. and these are professional-grade fireworks. leave them to professionals. consumers should not be looking over any firework. these are designed to be lit by professionals with consumers far away enjoying them in the sky. >> that's key even when you have legal fireworks, never stand right over them. >> absolutely. there's no good reason to look over a firework. >> another thing i want to show you guys before we go -- thank you very much -- is this. the sparkler. you can see we have a child mannequin here. my kids use this all the time. i used these sparklers as kids too. i had no idea they burn at 2,000 degrees. we actually have an infrared camera on this right now. take a look at this. it is absolutely -- see that big red spot? that big red spot is that sparkler. now coming back to me this is a blowtorch. i'm going to put this blowtorch on, guys. now the blowtorch is on. now take that infrared camera shot again. you see the two red dots? that's the blowtorch and a sparkler going around the same temperature. you would never, ever give your child a blowtorch to play with.

and so the consumer products safety commission says your kids should not be playing with sparklers at all. and if they do there needs to be adult supervision. what's the bottom line for the takeaway here? here are some of the consumer-grade fireworks. they'll have the nice labeling on them not brown paper bags you get on the side of the road. what do you do if you're doing this in your backyard legally? >> three really important tips. one, always have a water source handy. two, make sure that if it's a dud, do not relight it. and three, even when you're done with your fireworks, douse them anyway so you don't start any garbage fire. >> it can catch fire. >> absolutely. and we've had serious injuries associated with them. >> here's the takeaway. a bucket or garden hose right there even if you're doing it legally to put any potential problem out. hope it helps. >> wow! >> helped me decide. >> be heading off to the professional shows, that's about it. >> i'll handle the burger. jeff thank you. coming up are you better off having a big circle of friends or just one very close one? tamron's over in the orange room with bristol palin's

jams on the schuylkill expressway. this is around city avenue on the westbound side towards king of prussia. you can see a 30-minute drive time from vine street expressway up towards the blue route. the eastbound side in the center city area doing just a bit better. we are seeing residual effects, downed wires, downed poles due to the storms on tuesday night. this is 295 on greenwich township exit 15 closed at tomlin station, exit 16 at swedesboro road and exit 17 at harmony road. the first medical marijuana dispensary will open to patients in delaware. the first state compassion center is a nonprofit that will dispense prescribed amounts of marijuana to patients with various diseases and conditions. the center will follow federal, state security rules to eligibility and number of plants that can be grown on site. i'm rosemary connors. another update in 25 minutes.

in france one person was decapitated this morning, and officials believe a known terror group is responsible. nbc's kelly cobiella is in london with the very latest. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. french investigators are now saying they've arrested several people this morning, and they're looking for more accomplices. although they haven't said how many. one of the alleged attackers has been named as yassin sally. he was being investigated in 2006 for being radicalized. but dropped off the radar in 2008. this attack happened at an american gas factory. the company called air products based in allentown, pennsylvania. two men in a car rammed the front gate then drove into gas canisters, setting off an explosion there. president francois hollande said they intended to blow up the building. the body of one person was found after that explosion. the person had been decapitated and a message written on him in arabic. that body found close to the

entrance of the factory along with islamic state style flags. we are also following two more developing stories. apparent terrorist attacks. one in tunisia at a beach resort. seven dead believed to be shot there. and another, a suicide bombing at a mosque in kuwait. at least four dead. natalie, we'll keep on top of it. >> lots of developments. kelly cobiella from our london bureau thank you. well officials say stormy weather and rough terrain is hampering their recoveriests following the crash of an alaska sightseeing plane. nine people died in the crash including eight cruise ship passengers who were on a shore excursion. there's no word yet on the cause of the accident. this morning the boston marathon bomber is beginning his first full day in a colorado prison. dzhokhar tsarnaev was transferred to the facility a day after a judge formally sentenced him to death. officials say he's been held under restrictions reserved for terrorists and will eventually be moved to death row at the

federal prison in terre haute, indiana. a dramatic escape from a carjacking in redlands california. take a look. you can see a man approaching a car that had its engine running. inside a 10-year-old and her 2-year-old sister waiting for their mom to return as she comes running back to the car, the carjacker starts to drive away. when he does the 10-year-old grabs her sister and then jumps from the car. you can see them just tumble out as he speeds away. how frightening. the girl sustained only minor injuries. the carjacker managed to escape. hopefully they find him. well here is one very lucky puppy. firefighters in buffalo, new york dug deep trying to reach 3-month-old bailey. the puppy had disappeared into a drain, and rescuers tried treats to coax him out, but they ended up bringing in the heavy equipment, finally pulling little bailey up to safety and the surface. so cute. the tiny pooch was given some oxygen and still a little bit wet and dirty there, you can see. seems to be just okay and loving

all the attention. go, bailey. >> high cuteness factor there. >> a place to put the bones. >> exactly. a bizarre story out of new jersey jersey. >> a family who paid more than a million dollars to are their dream home is now suing to get out of the deal after receiving threatening letters from someone called the watcher. "today's" erica hill is outside that house this morning. erica, what's this one all about? >> reporter: savannah good morning. those chilly letters made references to quote, young blood and the buyers claim they're not the only ones to have received such a letter naming the sellers and the title company in their suit. >> reporter: in court papers the six-bedroom house is described as the current owners' dream home. yet more than a year after closing, the family of five isn't even living here. >> the complaint speaks for itself. that's been filed. it's been a nightmare for this family. >> reporter: that filing which has not yet been served alleges the sellers received a letter

from someone identified as the watcher about a week before the closing. it mentioned the new family moving in asking for, quote, young blood. the filing goes on to claim the sellers willfully withheld that information. fearing the sale would fall through. three days after closing, the plaintiffs say they received a letter claiming the house, quote, has been the subject of my family for decades. asking "why are you here? i will find out." and also referencing young blood, stating "once i know their names, i will call to them and draw them to me." the suit claims the owners received two additional letters in the span of about a month. one stating "i am the watcher. i am in charge of the house." and asking "have they found what is in the walls yet? will the young bloods play in the basement?" and noting "all the windows and doors allow me to watch you and track you." >> usually judges don't want to hold people responsible for things that are beyond their control.

and i think the previous owners are going to say we didn't know what this guy was going to do. we didn't know if the letters would continue. we didn't know if they would stop. the problem is him. the problem is the watcher. >> reporter: we were unable to reach the former owners of the home. in a statement, westfield's mayor assures residents officials have done everything possible. "when over a year ago this matter was reported to the police," it reads, "our police department conducted an exhaustive investigation based on the facts and evidence available." but so far the watcher remains a mystery. this is an upstale family town of some 30,000 residents. and that's why this story definitely got people's attention. >> thank god i'm not the homeowner. i would be scared to death. >> i can't wait to find out what's going on. >> reporter: a small-town story straight out of a horror film that now has plenty of people watching to see what happens next. the title company representative nbc news spoke with said they were not authorized to speak

and that's your latest weather. now an important health notice from the cdc before the family dives into the local swimming pool. >> cases of waterborne illnesses are on the rise. between this and the fireworks story, we seem like the biggest buzz killers of summer. but tom costello is at a pool in bethesda maryland. tom, this is the real deal. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. first of all, this pool here has a very good health and safety record. from resorts to neighborhoods to amusement parks, hotels you name it pool managers will tell you, it is an everyday challenge to keep pool water healthy, and a warning here this topic itself is a little gross. it's every pool manager's nightmare, made famous in "caddyshack" 35 years ago. >> want some? >> give me some. ♪ >> reporter: a doodle in the pool. >> here it is. it's no big deal.

>> reporter: but it is a big deal for the nation's health departments. a new cdc report finds 69 waterborne illness outbreaks over a two-year period. 1,300 known patients probably many more 73 hospitalizations, and 1 death. the vast majority involved pools and hot tubs and very often a parasite called cryptosporidium found in fecal matter and not easily killed by chlorine. >> it could be that a swimmer has a diarrheal incident in the water, or it could be that someone failed to shower before getting into and washed off of their bodies. >> reporter: that parasite can cause serious gastrointestinal illness. keeping the water clean means constantly monitoring the pool. >> this side's for ph and this side is for chlorine. >> reporter: if you can smell the chlorine that's often an indication that it's mixing with urine. if your eyes burn, other swimmers may have peed in the pool. >> it's a community pool and i don't want him catching anything. >> they wear goggles

religiously. they do open their eyes but their goggles are well-fitted and they usually don't get any water in their eyes. >> reporter: advice from the expert talk to kids about bathroom hygiene, make sure everyone in the family showers before and after they go swimming, and never swallow pool water. >> to make sure there's good hygiene for the kids if they're sick don't get in. regular bathroom breaks. tight-fitting diapers, all those things help prevent these outbreaks from happening in the first place. >> reporter: yeah we said it was a little gross. the cdc says harmful bacteria was also found in lakes, in streams, in the oceans nearby land. and so the advice if you're going to be swimming in those bodies of water, the exact same. don't swallow the water. and when you get out, make sure you shower. guys back to you. >> yeah. >> good advice. >> and if you smell chlorine get out as soon as you can! >> i took the family away a couple of weekends ago, and there were two incidents in two days. >> you didn't get back in the pool after that. >> they didn't let you in again? >> it wasn't me.

nbc 10 news starts now. good morning. i'm rosemary connors. it's just a few minutes before 9:00. meteorologist bill henley is tracking some clouds and some rain, right, bill? >> yes. and also some sunshine. the sun has broken out in the pocono mountains and the lehigh valley seeing sunshine too. that's a temporary break in the

clouds. clouds, though, are still in place over philadelphia. there you can see the break in the clouds from the scranton area and allentown. northern and western suburbs seeing sunshine but cloudy skies across delaware south jersey and for now in philadelphia starting to brighten up a little bit in the view from the nbc 10 studios. mostly cloudy day, however, temperatures in the upper 70s by 1:00. topping out near 80 this afternoon. there is a local connection to a deadly terror attack in france. one person was killed this morning at a gas factory in southeastern france. multiple arrests have been made. the attack happened at a factory owned by air products headquartered in lehigh county. we will continue to work on that ro story throughout the day and bring you updates. thousands of people across our region are going into their third day without electricity. nbc 10 in greenwich county gloster township utility and light poles mangled by the storm on tuesday are still out there.

cleanup crews have yet to get to them. power crews in new jersey delaware and pennsylvania are working around the clock to try to restore service to everybody by this weekend. philadelphia's new bike share program has pedalled its way to quite a milestone. two months since indigo hit the streets 100,000 rides have been logged. it took other cities as long as seven months to hit that mark. right now philadelphia's bike share program has 600 bikes. i'm rosemary connors. back to the "today" show. have a good one.

fans. taking selfies, taking pictures. in fact the last song he was kind of caught off guard. he was taking a selfie and said oh the song just started. >> he got into the mosh pit of our plaza. the line when i got here this morning, did you guys see the line? it streeched to near fifth avenue. it stretched blocks to fifth avenue. >> people were lined up yesterday. >> they're sticking around. they're going to be talking us a little later on this morning. >> a little more than two years ago i did "the tonight show," and they were the musical guest, imagine dragons. i had never really heard of them and they played "radioactive," and it was, like, whoa! who are these guys? >> wait till you hear how they got their big break in las vegas. >> we'll sit down and chat with them. we're going to start with a terrifying piece of video. i'm going to say up front i know a lot of kids are at home it's summertime. this might not be the best piece of video for them. >> i agree. everybody's okay. but it's scary. >> that doesn't make it any less scary. everybody's okay.

frightening moments during an illusionist show called "the supernaturalist." magician spencer horseman trapped as he rehearsed and practiced an act inside a water-filled cage hanging 30 feet above the ground. you can see the crew rushes in to help free him. one of the people by the way, in there climbing to help rescue is famed magician criss angel. this is his show i guess. horseman was revived, expected to be completely okay. that's the good news here. last night's show was postponed because of that incident until tonight. >> look the fact of the matter is a lot of these illusions are dangerous. >> yes. >> and people get injured. david copperfield, famously injured himself, cut himself very badly during one illusion. these things have the potential to go wrong, and that's i guess, in a sense part of the allure of -- because there's a risk. what's the problem. >> it's so scary watching the crew. like they're scaling the side. they're in a panic because they know he's in trouble. but again, to your point, we

think everything is okay. but my goodness. that is hard to watch. >> thank goodness everybody reacted as quickly as they did as well. so we have an update on a story that we were talking about earlier this week. >> where he broke this story. >> yes. well i don't know if we broke it. remember the watcher? this story is so creepy. there's this -- in the town of westfield, new jersey which is about 30 minutes here from outside of new york city maybe a little bit further away there's a stalker known as the watcher. apparently he's kept a family from moving into this beautiful house that they purchased, over a million-dollar home their dream home. six bedrooms. we're now seeing how beautiful this home is the inside. it's a gorgeous house. you see it was their dream home but the lawsuit claims the family after purchasing the home they started receiving threatening letters. they received three letters from this person identified only as the watcher on that letter. now, the attorney claims this has been a nightmare for that family, as you can imagine. >> yeah. >> they have not moved into the house. because of this.

the filing alleges the sellers apparently had also received a letter from the watcher about a week before closing that asked for -- and this is so disturbing -- young blood from the new family moving in. and the lawsuit goes on to claim that the sellers perhaps willfully withheld the information that there had been a threat. and one letter including -- had said "my grandfather watched the house in the 1920s. my father watched it in the 1960s. it is now my time. why are you here? i will find out." i'm saying they need to get security cameras all around that mailbox, see who is putting these letters. it's so scary. and the threats are even more dangerous. one says "who has the bedrooms facing the street? i'll know as soon as you move in. it will help me to know which is in -- who is in the bedroom, then i can plan better." now, we were unable to reach the

former owners of the home for comment. the mayor has said with these kinds of threatening letters that they have obviously done an investigation there, an exhaustive investigation, as they call it. you know what struck me as i saw the pictures of the house for the very first time reminds me of the "amityville" which, god forbid. >> there are some similarities. >> there are some similarities. >> you see that home. i mean, i'm hoping that this is obviously some jerk. >> more of a hoax i think. >> it is it probably is but would you want to move in? that's the thing. it's probably someone who thinks they're funny, and it's being a jerk but oh my gosh. >> and it's destroyed the dreams of the house, not to mention the property value of that home. although realtors in the area have said that it hasn't -- it's not affecting the market. >> not to question their credibility, but as a realtor, you're probably going to say that. >> yes.

it's been over a two-year period of time. so there are cases of pool-related illnesses on the rise. 1300 known patients. 73 people hospitalized even one fatality as a result of these parasites. so the common culprit is called a cryptosporidium. it's a parasite that caused more than half of the outbreaks treated, by the way, treated swimming pools. it can survive apparently in water that's not treated properly. i was amazed this week when you guys did the report earlier in the day. you know you smell that chlorine water. you think, ooh, that's a sign of cleanliness. they loaded up on the chlorine. that actually means that urine is mixing with the chlorine in the water. i mean listen. >> nice. >> time for the monthly willie geist take on the germ story. what am i supposed to do with this information? i'm going in the pool. i've been going to the pool my whole life. i'm a pillar of health.

poehler was performing improv wither had friends matt bester ian roberts and current "veep" star matt walsh. together they were the upright citizens brigade. >> they always had a big-picture idea of us working together and big dreams. but to be honest it was small, little steps of can we get a stage show up and running in new york? can we get someone to come see it? can we get on tv? >> reporter: they moved from chicago to new york to chase those dreams. but they didn't exactly find show biz glamour when they got there. what were those early days of ucv in new york like? >> i lived with my parents in new jersey. walsh, you slept on people's couches, yes? >> i couch hopped and then i slept in -- before they cleaned up the gowanus ka fal, it smelled so bad i thought i peed myself one night. i'm, like oh, my god, what happened is this it was just brooklyn coming in. so i since found a place. >> and you lost a ton of weight because you walked everywhere because it was too expensive

even to take the subway. >> yeah we were poor. >> you were still waiting tables for a while? >> yeah i was a waitress for a long time. i remember the day that i quit waiting tables and thinking like okay. this is going to be like comedy is going to now be what i do for a living. wow! >> shut up. >> a beautiful boy. >> reporter: their persistence paid off. in 1998 they landed a show on comedy central. >> shut up daniel. >> once we got on tv wow! maybe we should take all of these classes that we're teaching and put them in a theater. >> reporter: they established their first theater on west 22nd street in new york. but the place came with a slightly sordid past. >> we met a woman who was running a gentle burlesque house. it was a lap dance emporium or something. >> and that's gentle by your standards? >> well -- yeah. that's gentle for me. yeah. i go pretty -- >> it had a runway. >> it had a runway and there were mirrors. oh and there was a nude picture of our landlord when you went in which i would recommend,

it's actually -- it's a real power position putting in a nude picture of yourself. for months months afterwards mostly gentlemen, would come in during the day and act feign interest. oh it's improv. interesting. i've never been here before. i just want to check this place out. >> reporter: in spite of that location word spread and fans began to line up. >> we came to new york during improv and it was free. and that really i think, exploded our word of mouth. >> reporter: so the group came up with a curriculum and started sharing their secrets. >> you can't make somebody funny, but we can recognize talent and give them the methodology to work together better. >> reporter: the guys even wrote a book about it. people can read about this in the summer thriller. "comedy improvisation manual." >> it's a page turner. >> reporter: today ucb is something of a farm system for comedy's biggest movies and tv shows. we got together about three years ago, talking about ucb.

southeastern france. multiple arrests have been made. the attack happened at a gas factory owned by air products headquarters in lehigh county. this morning thousands of people across our region are going into the third day without electricity. downed power lines are the big cull brit. nbc 10 was in gloucester county. see some of the utility and light poles mangled by storms tuesday night. power crews in new jersey delaware and pennsylvania are working nonstop to restore service to everyone. we're just a day away from the start of the welcome america festival in philadelphia and this year's star spangled event leading up to the fourth of july is packed with fun from beginning to end. the festival gets going tomorrow afternoon with family day at the shops at liberty place. kids of all ages can celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first reading of "alice in wonderland" and arts and crafts interactive activities and more.

taking a look at the headlines, officials are hoping a break in the weather will allow recovery efforts following the crash of an alaska sightseeing plane. the aircraft slammed into a cliff while taking holland america cruise passengers on a shore excursion. all nine on board were killed. no word yet on the cause of that accident. lululemon is recalling moesh 300,000 elastic draw strings in women's tops that could snap back and cause eye and face injuries. there have been seven reported incidents of injury that came from the metal or plastic-tipped draw drawstrings. the company is urging customers to stop wearing the hoodies or remove the cord or request a noneelastic cord. weight loss combined with

vitamin d may reduce inflammation linked to cancer and other diseases. the year-long program focused on 200 overweight women with low vitamin d levels and half took a daily supplement and the other half took a placebo. at the end of the study, all the women had reduced levels of inflammation but the vitamin d group showed the most significant decline. when it comes to high school sports a new study finds girls run a higher risk of overuse injuries. the research from ohio state's wexner medical center found the highest rates of injuries like stress fractures and joint problems in girls track, field hockey and lacrosse. swimming and diving caused the most overuse injuries in boys. the takeaway for teens, doctors say varied movements so that they're not repetitive. also get plenty of rest kids. well here's a question would you rather ask for a raise or get a root canal? for some it seems root canal is a new choice. a new study shows 7% would

years later at south by southwest. pat monahan got swine flu, couldn't perform their headlining set that night at a beautiful festival in las vegas. so we hadden who the afternoon spot to play. and the promoter for the festival saw us perform, asked us to fill in for train, and all of a sudden we went from playing to you know 100 people at 12:00 knownnoon to playing in front of 35,000 people at 9:00 at night. >> they tell you when the door opens, you've got to be ready to go through it and you were. let's talk about the new album, " "smoke and mirrors." how is this different from "night vision," and what are you bringing to your fans at this point? >> we definitely didn't go into "smoke and mirrors" to recreate "night visions" or to do the opposite. we were trying to go in free of any agendas and make honest music that we could stand behind and be proud of for years. that's what "smoke and mirrors" is. we got off the road we went into the studio with over 100 songs and had to start whittling

down what "smoke and mirrors" was going to be for us. >> yeah you talked earlier about the battles that you guys had to make sure you guys got the right songs on the album. so you happy with how it turned out? you already have some big hits. "shots "shots" is already climbing up the charts. >> i think we're definitely perfectionists while we're recording it. but once you finish an album, you let go of it you know. >> yeah. >> and i think all of us are really proud of it. and we've been really happy to be able to perform it on the road. especially when you're performing it live is where it really comes to life. >> this is the most fun we've had on stage. we were able to really put a lot of effort into designing a stage and designing production around the music, around the album that we created. we created this whole world that the music lives in. so it's not just seeing us perform. it's this whole immersive experience that people are getting at the concerts. >> we love it. you have at least 80 songs that you can pick up. imagine dragons, thank you so much. and they are going to sing -- i love this -- the viewers'

74 right now in philadelphia 74 in trenton and pocono mountains are seeing temperatures climbing into the upper 60s are with more sunshine there. clouds and temperatures near 80 this afternoon. still a chance of a scattered shower during the day today. heavier rainfall waits until tomorrow. >> thanks, bill. a local connection to a deadly terror attack in france. one person was killed this morning at a gas factory in southeastern france. multiple arrests have been made. the attack happened at a gas factory owned by air products which is headquartered in lehigh county. this morning thousands of people across our region are going into their third day without electricity. downed power lines are the culprit. nbc 10 was in greenwich township gloucester county this morning, see the utility and light poles mang billed storms tuesday night. power crews in new jersey, delaware and pennsylvania are working around the clock to restore service. ♪

♪ >> and good morning. we have an nbc news special report. we have breaking news coming from the u.s. supreme court. >> that's right. it's a big one. this is the decision the court had before it whether or not to legalize legalize gay marriage across the country. the decision is from justice kennedy. pete williams at the court right now. pete, can you tell us what it says? >> historic ruling here for the first time the supreme court has said there is a constitutional right -- excuse me, to same sex marriage. can you hear the cheer in the crowd. a 5-4 decision written by justice anthony kennedy. this is a total victory for the advocates of same-sex marriage. the court considered a fallback in case it didn't go this far. the states would have to recognize same-sex marriage that's were performed in other states. but the court has gone the whole way and said there is an solution constitutional right to

same-sex marriage. now what this means is it is the law of the land. in the 14 states that now ban same-sex marriage, they will have to permit same-sex marriages now. so the effect of this will take a while. i won't be immediate. the court's mandate have to issue, that is a it cantechnical term. it will be soon and it means that same-sex marriage will be the law of the land. you probably heard a cheer go up from a big crowd out here. i have to say that this ruling, while it is historic, is not a big surprise. and there are two reasons for that. last october the u.s. supreme court had a series of cases from states that were opposing the ban and declined to take them. that was a signal. and then in the meantime, as courts around the country struck down bans on same-sex marriage,

the states came to the supreme court and said please put a stop to these until can you decide. and the court declined to do that, too. and some of the conservatives say i guess we know how this is going to come out. >> pete -- >> this is the -- this day is the anniversary of the big supreme court decision involving texas a couple years ago. so it's a historic day for a lot of reasons. >> as you mention, actually there are three major same-sex gay rights president dents in this court. two of them were decided on june 26th. so now we have another one. a potential to go down in the record books, something with the significance of something like brown versus board of education. pete, you mentioned it wasn't a surprise. as recently as two years ago the court had the chance to make a ruling in a companion case and didn't do so. what changed so quickly? >> well, i was that decision of two years ago. by the way, i'm looking here. this is a 28-page decision.

that is relatively short. the one yesterday on health care was even shorter, 21 pages. so this is not a situation where the court had to agonize over this. what changed is that decision two years ago. the supreme court struck down part of a federal law that banned the federal government from recognizing marriages in the states where they're legal. that produced a cascade of rulings around the country where the courts were saying if the federal government can discriminate based on same-sex marriage, why should the states? and that is basically what the supreme court here said today. justice anthony kennedy who wrote all of the other gay rights cases says here, the constitution promises liberty to all within its reach, a liberty that includes certain specific rights that allow persons with an lawful realm to define and express their identity. i haven't had a chance to read this yet. if it is a typical decision by anthony kennedy, it will be full of language like that.

the decision two years ago on the defense of marriage act question had the word dignity in it dozens of times. >> pete, let me also bring in chuck todd who is our chief white house dpont or moderator of "meet the press," excuse me. chuck, the obama administration in arguing against the state ban said this, i'm reading it from pete's note, "they were unconstitutional, arguing that they impose concrete harms on same-sex couples and send the incapable inescapable message that same sex couples and their children are second class citizens." so this is a big victory for the administration. >> it is a big victory for the administration. it's going to, what will be interesting to watch is what is going to be the fallout, particularly among many republicans and many conservatives in particular ivan evangelicals that have been fighting this state by state through the years as well as in the supreme court. where are they going to come down? i think there's a couple

presidential candidates that we're going to find out immediately as pete williams mentioned, there are 14 states right now that ban same-sex marriage. well two of those 14 states are led by governors who are running for president, ohio's john kasich, louisiana's bobby jindal. you'll find out how much they're ready to move on or not move on on this culture fight, if you want to call it that on the right, by how quickly they go ahead and implement the ability for the state to allow for same-sex marriages. i think you're going to see ohio do it very quickly. i wouldn't be surprised if jobby jindal who is trying to win over evangelical support tries to slow walk it and you'll see other governors make that determination themselves based on their own politics. >> as i turn back to pete, i it this significance of this, pete, is the court has essentially taken this issue away from the democratic process. so no longer could a state have a referendum banning gay marriage.

now the constitution says according to the supreme court that people have a right to marry someone of the same sex. >> yes, first of all, the dissent argue that's very point. the dissent written by chief justice john roberts for himself and the other conservatives says this court is not a legislature whether same-sex marriage is a good idea should be of no concern to us under the constitution. judges have the power to say what the law is, not what it should be. so that's point one. point two is what you're now going to see is what we've already seen a little bit of in the last couple of months. states trying to limit this as much as they can where the bans have been popular. for example, you have seen some states say that local officials who have a religious objection to grabbing same sex marriage licenses shouldn't have to. we're going to see court battles over that now. so that will be the next sort of

legal development here. let me just quote one thing from the majority opinion here by justice kennedy. he says, "no union is more pro found than marriage for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family." then he says "same sex couples ask for equal dignity," that is the word dignity again. they ask for "equally dignity in the eyes of the law, constitution, grants them that right." >> and, pete this decision seems to be a sign of the times. back in 1996, a gallup poll on this section, the most recent poll just last month, 60% of people now say they favor this. >> well this is the biggest decision rewriting the laws about the marital union since about 50 years ago when the court struck down bans on interracial marriage. so it's a big deal for that reason.

it's a big deal in terms of civil rights and the march towards gay rights. but you're right about that, matt. this has been very fast. it was just 30 years ago or so that court said that gay conduct is criminal and it slowly moved away from that. so it's been a relatively fast change in public opinion and a relatively fast change here in terms of the legal developments at the supreme court. >> let's go to chuck todd. i think back to land mark case like roe versus wade, chuck, which took that issue out of the democratic process and away from voters. the court finding there was a right to abortion. but then followed decades of it being one of the hottest political issues. do you foresee something like that with gay marriage? the court has spoken but we're just beginning to see a movement. >> i don't think so on gay marriage. now that doesn't mean you won't see this presidential primary campaign sort of be the last

fight on this. i think you'll see mike huckabee, rick santorum, bobby jindal, perhaps ted cruz, four or five candidates that are trying to woo he vanevangelical vote wrerz this is really important to them. by the way, you're going to hear phrases like religious freedom from some candidates who want to tap into those voters and appeal to them without saying they're necessarily against same-sex marriage. i think you'll see a split in the party. i think you'll see jubeb bushes and scott walkers who said they were against same-sex marriage but would abide by the law. i think you're going to see others say -- come out in favor of it. the party is not going to be united on the right so i don't think it becomes roe v. wade is today and divisive as it still is. but this campaign will be sort
