the money." i'm becky quick. america's heah crisis. it costs a fortune and it's entirely preventable. are they going too far? can an app a day keep the doctor away? the hospital and patients that say it can. >> i still struggle with my weight but it's made me more aware of what i'm eating. >> the ups and downs of the amusement par business. finding the best roller coasters fol talk to a man that rides the rails for a living. and staycations. how to stay near and still feel far away. >> this is on the money. your money, your life, your future. now, becky quick. >> america is in the midst of a health crisis and it's one that
5:01 am
is entirely preventable. it's not cancer, it's not heart disease, it's obesity and itsz relative diabetes. each day more than 4,000 americane diagnosed with diabetes and more than 75,000 people die from it. why aren't we preventing this totally preventable disease? that's our cover story today. >> the epidemic of obesity is a american's waistlines are expanding. moren 35% of the u.s. populati is considered obese according to centers for disease control. it's a growing problem. obesity rates more than doubled over the last 35 years. the consequences can be deadly. obesity can lead to diabetes which is now the 7th leading cause of death in the u.s. type two diabetes effects more than 9% of the u.s. population. that's more than 27 million americans struggling to control their blood sugar according to the american dia associatio also hurting our wallets.
5:02 am
obesity now kounlts fo for 21% health ce costs. some municipalities are trying to get americans to cut back on unhealthy food and beverages. it's a great thing to let people know the risk they're taking. like what we put on the cigarette packages. what can be done about this epidemic? san franci is the first city to require health warnings on ads for sugary drinks. joining us i rk berman. thank you for joining us today. >> thank you, becky. >> you are opposed to this new san fran law that's requiring warnings on ads. why do you oppose the warning labels? >> from a logic standpoint, the warning that' been proposed and is going to be adopted says that sugary drinks contribute to abee obes for that matter, cooks, candy, ice cream, they all contribute
5:03 am
to obesity. if you have to put warnings out on soft drinks then you need to put it out on the others and the centers for disease control years ago before the downturn in soft drink consumption said that soft drinks only accounted for 7% of total caloric intake for adults. so you have to ask yourself whether we have a crisis here when it comes to soft drinks. you may remember when bloomberg in new york tried to ban big that did not go over with the yea and the court said that it was arbitrary and capricious on bloomberg's part. you can say that's the same thing here because there's an arbitrar attack on soft drinks. >> i understand your point that adults -- this doesn't make up a huge fraction of what they're intaking on a caloric basis every day. when you look at kids that's what the concern might be.
5:04 am
when it comes to a warning label it's the idea that people pay attention. is going to add up to obesity and could cause sugar decay. i do have a problem with the warning by itself. >> they're putting them in taxi cabs and on billboards. i don't kn if that's really directed to young kids. i don't kn of too many young kids taking a taxi cab. it's a statement by the city but not necessarily an efficient one or effective one but if you have an iq above room temperature, you know that soda has calories in it along with the other foods thate eat. >> i will tell you and a agree with you on a lot of this logic but when it came to having fast food restaurants actually put up the calorie count on every single item they sell and making it up on the board. that changed my behavior. there's things i thought were lower calories that weren't. maybe this sticks with a child that said i should think about it and add it up t my idea of things i should be drinking in
5:05 am
well, you know, i always warn people against the focus group of one person and in your particul case it may have changed your behavior but studies that have been done indicate that those calorie counts on menu boards don't change behavior. so it doesn't really matter and in any event those are not warnings. just information and there's informati on the soda botel that says here's how many calories are in there. it's the same with the fast food boards but it doesn't say if you eat a hamburger it's going to kill you. >> it doesn't seem like a huge stretch or huge deal and there aren't that many people standing out against it. again, i'm not con doming it but when you're talking about a warning it's not changing anything. they're not all saying that they can't sell them. >> if you want to use what's the harm, you can do that for a things and you could d what's the harm?that it's my in this particular case they're saying that the size of the
5:06 am
advertisem the size of the warning has to be 20% of the advertisin so what's to say that there is any harm in making it 50% of the advertising. 20% is an arbitrary number too. they lifted that out of the tobacco law that says tobacco warnings need to be 20% of the label. but the san francisco supervisor they don have the right to just go into another law and lift out a particular provisn which is is a penalty provision if u will and just say, well, we're going to use that number. so there's no basis for the 20%. why isn't it 30%? what's the harm in it being 30%. this is why we have laws so people can hijack other peoples rights and commercial rights. >> i want to thank you for your time. it been a pleasure talking to you. becky, thank you. >> one program that helps patients fight diabetes was unve recentl in new orleans. it combined good old fashioned advice with a new high-tech

twist. bertha joins us with more on that. t a growing number of digital tools to help us monitor our health and in particular our weight. doctors in new orleans are testing a number of them includin the new apple watch with their high risk patience and the early results are are impressive he was never one to calories but mobile devices and health apps are finally helping him get his diet and diabetes under control after years of nagging from his doctor. >> i would go to the doctor and say yes, sir and i listened to all the good advice and then go down the street and have a po boy. then his cardiology prescribed mob apps loaded on to his phone and apple watch at the hospital version of a genius bar. i still struggle with my weight but it's made me more aware of what i'm eating. >> they're trying to harness mobile technology to coax it's patients to get healthier.
5:08 am
there's over 100,000 health and wellness apps in the market. there's been data to say that as many as 60% are not useful. so we like to feature the ones that we and others have found to be helpful to patients. >> the hospital is conducting a trial s using apps and mobi blood press cuffs to actively monitor their hypertension they also bought the patients apple watches to make things like notifications about medicatis more immediate. seeing what the medication was an seeing the picture of it kind of helped me remember which one was the one i was supposed to take. >> early results have been encouragin we' seeing at the en0 days over 60% of our patients are gett that's in a very short period of time. it's a much more interactive model ofn requires constant monitoring of the data on their devices and con stand contact on the phone. it seem intrusive to some but patients in the program say
5:09 am
it works for them. >> i love it. my gosh. i definitely want them to know what's going on with my blood pres for sure. i mean, it would be different if they're listening to my phone calls but this is for my own good. as john puts it, he feels like he's getting a real support network now. >> the hospital actually bought apple watches for the patients in it's hypertension trial. they obviously can't buy one for everyone but dr. melani says the health team monitoring approach could be used to help lots of rearranged it so they have teams, a nurse practitioner in the doctor's office working with the pharmacist. they get that data in. they take a look. it will alert them for example if your blood pressure has gone down because you have been exercisi and eating well and your medication and then it goes down. the pharmacist might call and

say let's bring down your medication if it spikes the opposite or they also use with some patients these electronic scales that send back the information. so with heart patients in particul if they gain a lot of water weight that's a concern. so they're able to call and say hey, you're gaining a lot of weight. we can either tweak your medicati or tweak what you're doing. exercise more. it's really about that team approach that these patients say really makes a difference for them. thank you very much. up next, we are on the money. you don't need to drop hundreds of dollars to drop hundreds of feet. we'll show you how thrill seekers can enjoy the best new rides of the summer while holding on to their wallets. later, saving time and money on a staycation. we'll go beyond the backyard pool. how to leave it al

5:15 am
other attractions coming into theme parks. >> how in the world did you get into this line of business? my kids would love to do what you do. >> in a lifelong passion. kids normally love amusement parks. i just never lost the love. >> you have a list of your top through new coasters this summer. it a new ride at six flags magic mountain. it's called twisted colossas. what is this? >> it's actually a retrofit of an existing coaster that had been there since the 1970s. appeared in the movie national lampoon's vacation. it was a beloved wooden coaster but nearing the end of its useful life and they came in and they ripped out the traditional wooden coaster track and put in a steel coaster track and modified the ride and it's now called twister colossas and has new elements including
5:16 am
inversions whi is very unusual for a wooden coaster. >> let's talk about another pick you have. it comes from the regional park in north carolina, this is called fury 325. you call this a new breed of roller coasters. why is that? >> we have 325 guesses as to how many feet tall this is. 325 i would be guessing. >> you've got it. 325. 325 feet tall. which is very tall. it's one of the tallest coasters in the world and it is -- also goes 95 miles per hour. making it one of the fastest coasters in th world. >> last but not least on your list of favorites is the ride thunder bird. that comes from another theme park called holiday world. what do you think about this one? >> it's a winged coaster which means that the seats are on either side of the track rather than being directly over the track which gives a very unique perspecte and also makes for a very wide train and at some -- at different points during the ride, the train is racing
5:17 am
toward, in this case, what looks like you're going to crash into it with this very wide train but at the very last moment it tilts sideways and you thread the key hole and just barely make it through. do have any tips for parents can maybe try to save money at theme parks this money? >> sure. it's not inexpensive to go to the park. the major destination marks like disney and universal do not discount their tickets but what they will do is they will have package deals where they bundle hotel stay tickets. sometimes the also offer food as part of the package. i also would suggest that people might want to consider going in the off season when these deals tend to be more generous. for the regional parks, the seasonal parks, they almost always do discount their tickets but you have to do some research. also you can do some advance purchasing on the websites and often save a lot of money.
5:18 am
>> that's a great tip. >> and one thing that i often recommend and people are surprised to hear this is it may make sense to get a season pass sometimes. you're going to go to a park more than once, often, for a little more than the cost of a single ticket, you can get a season pass and go two or perhaps three times. >> quick question for you. do you ever t up on one of these rides? >> no. and i have been blessed wi iron stomach. i can still go on spinning rides even though i'm middle age and i'm lucky in that respect. you're a lucky, lucky man. thank you for joining us today. we really apprecia it's my plea up next, we're on the money. if your heart says paris but your wallet says home. hints on how to state your name a staycation into a vacation to remember. a look at how the

5:22 am
>> people think of it as staying at home. but you don't have to stay in your house. if you want to go somewhere it can be nice to find another you're suggestingalways wanted to friends or you never stayed there or maybe even rent a home in an area near your home or where you may want to live if you want to think about moving to another location. >> that's a great idea. >> yeah. >> and what i really like is all of these festivals happen in the summertime t these people work? to the festivals and cation you enjoy them. >> a lot of people say it sounds like a good idea but there's so many dis home. how you get into that vacation mode when you're still at home. >> you have to disconnect and disengage and that's hard to do on a vacation at any time but you have to work hard to do that if you're doing a staycation. try to eat out. have dinner delivered. don't do the chores. the bills, the errands.
5:23 am
leave all of that for another day. i personally wouldn't even check the mail. pretend you really aren't there. >> let it pile up outside and let people think you're not the best plan is to make sure that if you want to do it you really take the time and have a relaxing enjoyable vacation. you're staying put but you're on vacation. relax, enjoy, and don't let work and other distractions keep you from having that me time. >> thank you. next on the money, a look at the news for the week ahead. what's a skateboard without wheels? the future for one iconic film product.
