to reck black churches in two weeks. it happened in georgia, north carolina tennessee, south carolina. now the feds are working to see if the fires are hate crimes. we are at the scene of the fire. sarah, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. fire investigators are bringing in a ladder truck to give them an aerial view of the destruction and help them determine if it was caused by nature or arson. this morning local and federal agencies are investigating the cause of the fire tuesday night at mount zion methodist episcopal church in south carolina. 50 firefighters responded to the scene, but authorities say it is too soon to tell what caused the fire citing storms and lightning strikes in the area. >> it is hard to say who might have come through here or what the cause was. we had problems here before. it really didn't go away.

it's still here. >> reporter: the blaze comes amid a rash of fires that erupted at black churches across the south in the past two weeks. officials say at least two fires have been declared arson. all of the recent fires occurred in the weeks after the shooting in charleston on june 17. a white gunman opened fire killing nine people. the victims were all black. the fires have fuelled the discussion with the hashtag # who is burning black churches trending throughout the week. the south has a long history of racially motivated attacks against black churches. mount zion was burned in 1995 by members of the ku klux klan and was visited by then president bill clinton after it was rebuilt. a press conference is scheduled in just about three hours. we hope to learner more about any headway investigators may have made overnight. back to you. >> sarah, thank you so much.

>> i have learned in my state, the most ethnically diverse in the country, the first way to do it is show up and to listen. so for instance when the tragedy happened in charleston african-american ministers in my state called and wanted a prayer service. i went on father's day and sat with african-american ministers and members of the congregations and spoke about racism. er racism is the cause of what happened to charleston. >> the president went down and eulogized the reverend pinckney. >> i don't think he listens. look at camden in our state. murder rate is down 55%. who showed up? the president to say what a great job it was. >> when president obama came to office it was all the talk about hope and change. there was the feeling of inspiration. you can decide how it worked out six years later. what could you do to inspire

one young man's remarkable journey. >> when you hear someone suffered are from a stroke we think of an older person with gray hair and a life of experience. what if a stroke hits while you are young? what if it came on suddenly and wiped out 95% of your memory. first day of school first kiss gone in a flash. it happened when joe miller was about to turn 25. he's committed to living life to the fullest all over again for the first time. you must be joe. >> hi. give me a hug. >> reporter: the way joe millerer greets you, you would never guess he was on hise is death bed. he was an aspiring artist working jobs to stay afloat constantly on instagram. in october he went to bed with a migraine. >> the only reason i remember is purely because of an instagram photo i took. it came out twisted.

it was a glitch. i posted it anyway because i felt like it accurately depicted how i was feeling at the time. >> reporter: three days later joe's roommate found him unconscious. it was a massive stroke. >> the most important thing with respect to the stroke treatment is to get to the hospital quickly. in this case he obviously did not. he may easily have died before coming to the hospital. >> reporter: joe's parents flew in from nebraska. were there types you thought you hugt lose him? >> definitely. >> i was so tore up on the inside. my wife, listen. i'm strong during the this time. if he passes away you're -- you have to be strong. >> reporter: surgery to relieve pressure on joe's brain saved his life. >> joe? joe. we love you. >> reporter: joe survived. >> i'm alive. i didn't die.

>> reporter: the stroke has taken a toll. joe lost feeling on the left eyde of his body. >> i have work to do. >> reporter: 95% of his memories were gone. >> the only person you are really remembered was your mom. >> true. yes. >> reporter: joe moved back to his parents' home in nebraska and now lives in the basement. if it sounds like a rough situation for a 25-year-old, you haven't met joe. >> i believe i have a new beginning, a fresh start to try things for the first time. >> this is my first baseball game since my stroke. >> reporter: he's doing just that and documenting every moment. >> for the first time all over again. >> reporter: all the instagram posts from before the stroke were like a treasure trove. what was it like to open it up and see the photos and videos. >> i was like oh man, this kid is crazy. >> we are hiking -- >> reporter: to help joe remember friends sent videos recounting favorite memories.

sanctuary. has work changed since your stroke? >> i believe so. this work is right after my stroke. there is a lot of free form expression. there is to order. i just pretty much painted these lines sfrks he asked he to try. you want foe put a blindfold on. >> i do. >> reporter: joe's way of showing even when faced with limitations we can accomplish things we never expected. wow! my art is nothing like joe's. we tried to capture his enthusiasm. he's infectious. he's working on his art. he wants to go back to college. this summer he's working with fashion students at the university of nebraska to design hip clothes that will be easier for people with disabilities people who have had strokes to take off and on. doctors aren't sure why joe had the stroke . there are generally reasons including obesity, high blood pressure and problems with blood vessels and heart abnormalities

8:51. time for today's food. we are all about the ultimate party foods. our guests this morning, our friends from sordid finished up their lost and hungry tour. took them to culinary hot spots in los angeles, the pacific northwest, las vegas, new orleans, chicago, miami, richmond virginia before finishing up back here in new york. jamie, ben, barry and mike. i'm looking at your profiles. how much weight did you gain? >> we measure in chins. >> did you have fun? >> incredible. >> amazing. we discovered so much. we started in l.a. and went to restaurants. we were invited into people's houses. invited by virginia the to vuft there. it's been -- the momentum has been ahazing is. >> that's fun. you're going to make one of your favorite dishes you sampled

along the way from the new orleans area. >> yep. >> what's the dish? >> it was inspired by a crawfish boil from new orleans. we went to a member of the community's home. they showed us how to make it properly. >> you're doing it with a twist. >> how do we get started? >> what we've got here is fresh shrimp mussels, corn celery potatoes mushrooms and seasonings and sies spices. it couldn't be easier. >> shrimp and mussels but no crawfish. >> crawfish is difficult or expensive to get ahold of if you are not in new orleans. this is inspired by the flavors. the method. something you can create at home. >> this is a one pot dish. >> potatoes go in. throw all of that tray in. >> what if you don't like mushroom ares? >> we have bell peppers there. add some color. >> now? >> add them in as well. it will be a spicy broth. we have creole seasoning, kay yen, brown clov.

philadelphia wilmington and dover. a slight chance of an afternoon shower as temperatures warm. 73 degrees. no threat of severe weather today. we will see temperatures climb with bright sunshine into the 80s by 1:00 this afternoon, 84 degrees. breaking news the past ten minutes we've learned that another person is dead after this car crashed and burst into flames on the schuylkill expressway this morning. that brings the total number of dead in this incident to three. our traffic camera as you can see showed the fiery scene this morning in the westbound lanes of the schuylkill expressway near montgomery drive. this is the scene from the ground. the crash happened around 2:30 this morning. police are trying to determine exactly what led up to this crash. new from overnight, a man is recovering after being shot while driving a van in north philadelphia. investigators say the man was shot along stillman street but he drove himself to chalmer's avenue to avoid the gunfire. investigators did find a gun in the victim's van.

police have not named any suspects yet in this case. overnight we received these surveillance pictures of four suspects whom police say robbed a chestnut hill bank yesterday. according to investigators, the four men robbed the td bank along germantown avenue before splitting into two groups and taking off in separate directions. i'm rosemary connors. we'll have another update in about 25 minutes. now back to the "today" show. have a good one.

men who robbed a delivery man. if you see these men, do not approach them but call 911 right away. drexel university has laid off several dozen employees. the school knew it would have to cut costs after it made the decision to take a smaller class size with the upcoming fall semester. the layoffs and other measures will save drexel money. we'll have a news news cast coming up in 30 minutes. back to the "today" show.
