picking up the pieces. today, residents in dozens of south jersey towns ravaged by severe weather will get answers from the state about how to get their homes and lives back on track. we are tracking the possibility of showers later but not everybody will see the rain. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today," i'm rosemary connors. >> most people seeing readings

in the six and everyone is dry including center city. radar scene pretty quiet in our area for now. to the southwest is showers heading for the delaware beaches and the jersey shore. the temperatures right now? 67 degrees in northeast philadelphia. wilmington 65 and down to 67 in millville. pottstown at 60. lots of sunshine to start with and scattered clouds coming in. 74 by 9:00 and lunch time 80. neighborhood-by-neighborhood forecast when i am back in ten minutes. it's a thursday morning. let's get a look at the traffic so far, if there is any, with jessica boyington in the first alert traffic center. >> not dealing with volume but ongoing construction that is typical four 5:00 this morning. broad street is closed off and police activity blocking off the westbound side. eastbound side is closed.

it's closed between broad street and schuylkill expressway until 5:00 a.m. speaking of the schuylkill expressway no problems drive time eastbound. 12 minutes from the blue route to the vine and no problems on 95 southbound. we are watching ongoing construction out in cherry hill new jersey route 70 westbound. one lane is getting by south cornell and mcclellan avenue and i'll check the new jersey cameras coming up in a minute. breaking news in camden. someone shot at an undercover police officer. nbc10's katy zachry is live outside police headquarters to fill us in. >> reporter: we know the undercover officer's car is shot. but the officer was not hurt. officers investigating kept us a few streets back while they looked into what happened this morning. it happened in the parkside neighborhood of camden and it

took place just before midnight. we understand an undercover officer was sitting in his vehicle at the corner of park boulevard and kenwood street when someone shot at his car. his car, again was hit but the officer was not hit by the bullet and not injured. the shooter did take off. the next half hour i'm working to get more information about that shooter and fleeing suspect who was armed at last check and a better description for you. so check back in. katy zachry nbc10 news. now to breaking news from overnight. out west more than 200 firefighters are battling a brush fire in southern california. the blaze broke out last night in a rugged area about an hour east of los angeles. flames have burned dozens of acres so far. people at a lakeside camping area evacuated as a precaution. but official say no homes are in danger. more breaking news from the philippines. past half hour a ferry boat

carrying more than 170 peepople cap-sized. we will bring you new information as soon as we get it. today, the philadelphia parking authority will roll out a new fleet of taxis that are wheelchair accessible. one of those will be introduced today like this one to passengers. the group wants to make philadelphia the first city in america with a fully accessible taxi system. the parking authority expects to have dozen wheelchair taxi cabs in service by the fall. this morning, the federal government is looking whether the airlines could limit growth so they could keep ticket sales high. the justice department is leading this investigation. how did this come to their attention, vai? >> like a lot of us who fly from time to time federal

investigators started to notice a lack of empty seats in a shrinking, but more profitable airline industry and it wasn't lower fuel prices that raised suspicion about airlines. possibly working together to make sure fares stayed high. u.s. investigative sources are looking how they used the term glin as in capacity discipline. one said it's a code word. >> it's basically saying don't grow your airline, don't add speeds. get rid of routes where you don't have your flights completely full. >> reporter: investigation comes just as the airlines are beginning to turn a record profits after struggling for years. those profits are being pumped by fewer available seats. 13% higher ticket prices the last five years and extra charges such checked bags and ticket changes and even extra leg room. united and delta both say they have been told they are being

investigated. we have no comment from american. and southwest airlines says it will cooperate, if asked. the airline industry added there will be more seats available this summer not fewer. rosemary, i'll join you in the studio at the bottom of the our. vai sikahema nbc10. a nursing home investigation is revealing serious allegations against a chain with facilities in our area. authorities say residents were left thirsty hungry and in soiled undergarments long periods of time. the attorney general office filed a lawsuit against golden living center. 14 are named in a suit including one in philadelphia's west oak lane neighborhood and another in phoenixville. the suit says the company failed to provide the basic care to residents. the company has not commented on the case. from our jersey shore bureau. two tragedies are prompting official to warn people into

wading into high-risk areas as they are stepping up efforts to keep swimmers safe. a swimmer has not been able to find who disappeared in this area. he disappeared early tuesday morning. the same day a 17-year-old girl drowned in a lake at an old mining quarry in ocean county. police say it's never safe to swim at a qauruarry. >> it can drop from two feet to 20 feet immediately and no climbing back up particularly if you're a weaker swimming. >> it was the fourth drowning at that quarry since 1984. liskeds lifeguards are building this talker to give them a better view of swimmers. they are hoping to find out today what kind of recovery help is on the way from the state

government. representatives will meet this morning and talk about the storm damage and where funding could come from to make repairs. initial damage estimates run around $10 million and distant meet fema's threshold for uninsured damages which would qualify the state for federal disaster money. it's 8:00 minutes after 4:00 and 71 degrees. the temperatures still falling at this point. we have mostly clear skies and the humidity is on the low side this morning. a warm day but i'm tracking some showers for parts of the area. not everybody is going to see it. the fourth of july is looking warm. can't completely rule out a shower but i think most of the weekend is going to be shower-free. reading will see sunshine today and 63 and clear skies in philadelphia and 71 cape may. it's clear for now. 72 degrees. the chance of showers for the

shore and delaware beaches, as showers are tracking into our area this morning. they are well to the south and west but during the day, will likely see raindrops falling at the shore. radar is completely clear for allentown and you can see the wet west spotty showers moving through virginia. but there are some thunderstorms that are popping up this morning in eastern virginia heading towards maryland this morning. those are on track for moving forwards delaware to start with the clouds will be out of here but during the day, we will see more clouds in delaware and south jersey. 77 degrees at 9:00 in philadelphia. clouds will be inching into philadelphia. it will be partly sunny day and shower activity at the shore and cape may at 1:00 this afternoon and chance of showers and possibly heavy downpours during the late afternoon hours. the showers start to move out by 7:00 this evening. a look at the weekend forecast when i come back in ten.

lower pottsgrove around route 422 westbound. use the detour signs to get around that. while you were sleeping crews in camden county were spraying the area to kill off mosquitoes. this is video when they conducted its scheduled sprays. ofgs official say the sprays take place when mosquitoes are active after a storm or on when an area has tested positive for west nile virus. residents are urged to get rid of their standing water on their property to avoid mosquitoes. watch as a septa rider staggers along the platform and ends up falling right on to the tracks. how he ended up avoiding serious injury. i'm matt delucia live in trenton. a school out here that teaches kids in a rather unconventional way and it's all about putting them on the fast track to

the frightening fall that was caught on camera. this morning, we are getting a closer look at the man who fell onto the tracks at a septa station in kensington neighborhood. it happened last night on somerset station platform. the man walked down the stairwell before stumbling and falling on the track. people waiting for the train told the cashier somebody had fallen and power was shut off once september take officials were notified. the man was able to get off the tracks with the help of two passengers. a man suspected of starting a fire that durned boun aurned down

a cvs pharmacy was captured after a wanted poster was released on monday with a $10,000 reward. you may remember the chaotic scene in philadelphia after the death of freddie gray while he was in police custody. tv land has pulled reruns of "dukes of hazzard." the problem is the confederate flag. retailers like walmart and ebay have stopped selling images with the flag on it. the fence around the grounds of the white house is now more difficult to scale. an anti-climb feature that includes sharp metal points was

stalled on top of the fence yesterday and a temporary solution until a long-term solution can be put in place. it comes after recent security breaches including a jump fencer who made his way into the white house. people allowed to go into the white house for a tour are able to do something they haven't been able to do for 40 years. take a picture. visitors can now post photos and view social media while inside the building. the change started yesterday. guests can use compact cameras but video cameras and live streaming are still banned. president obama will be at the university of wisconsin today pushing his overtime campaign. he introduced the proposal tuesday and it could affect nearly 5 million salaried workers who are on the job more than 40 hours each week.

ready? aim. fire. getting kids on the right track. a local man is lending his time and expertise to teach kids about racing and life. we have the exclusive story how they are winning in more ways than one. matt delucia is live in trenton how this all came together. matt? >> reporter: it's summertime and kids are out of school and your kids might be in a camp or perhaps a sports league. this one is out of the ordinary. even the guy who runs it agrees. right here inside this church it is a racing school. a group of kids spend hours, days weeks, and months focused on winning here at the living hope alliance church after the sunday services. this place turning into the living hope racing school. about a dozen kids from 10 through high school age come here and the owner of the school does this on his own time for no

money. he takes the kids who might be otherwise doing nothing with their free time and he hands them tools and in doing so he teaches them how to build these cars that can go upwards of a hundred miles an hour and teaches them how to race and how to win. all that time spent together he says is better than any textbook or class he's ever seen. >> when i know i'm coming to see these kids here they can tell when i'm not exactly right and they help me get out of whatever funk i'm in and get, you know, motivated and back on track again, and vice versa. >> reporter: what do the kids who do this who spend hours and hours of work building these racing machines what do they have to say about that work? i'm working on that for the 5:00

hour. in torontorenton, matt delucia, nbc10 news weather. 19 minutes after 4:00. we are in the 60s and 70s. clear skies. very little wind. most of the area is calm this morning and most areas will start with sunshine. a clear view looking toward center city. 71 degrees at philadelphia international. one of the warm spots. look at the humidity though. way down. 68% and pleasant start for the day and nice day ahead for most areas but we will be watching the shore. the delaware beaches for some showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm. right now, 50s for chester spring. farther to the northwest, quaker town is 59 degrees. 60 currently in doylestown and coatesville in the upper 60s. newark in 66 and millville 66 and 70s at the shore. will be a warm day at the shore despite clouds and chance of showers. clouds are to the southwest right now. but mainly clear to start with. a few clouds that are moving across south jersey will disappear to start with.

then we will watch for showers developing during the day. you can see some scattered showers in virginia and one lone thunderstorm just heading into maryland. the future cast showing there are some clouds in the future and a chance of some showers during the day today. this is 5:00 this afternoon. then those showers move offshore and we have a nice day ahead for friday. humidity comes down even lower for friday. look at that. sunshine at 10:00 in the morning and sunshine stays for most of the day on friday. there are some clouds. heading in for the fourth of july. future cast showing at 9:00 mostly cloudy start but take note. the showers are to the southwest and though there is a slight chance of a shower this computer model showing us dry through 4:00 in the afternoon with some breaks of sunshine and more importantly, you could argue dry as we head through the evening on the fourth of july. seven-day forecast is coming up in the next half hour. it's 4:20 on this thursday. 71 degrees out there.

jessica boyington is keeping an eye on all of the traffic cameras. what are you seeing at this hour? >> a lot of ongoing construction but a few things to talk about as well. we are losing the right hand shoulder on the schuylkill expressway and vine street expressway. the cone taking out the right-hand side shoulder but drive time 11 minutes from the vine up towards the blue root. no problems but something to watch out for. sellersville this area is closed. ramp closure outó lower pottsgrove on route 422 westbound side around armor hammer boulevard. camden has broken ground on a new project that could put thousands of people to work when it's completed. the whole tech international

campus will ship state-of-the-art facilities nuclear reactors. >> if you have any kind of an accident you can walk away and the accident would take care of itself. that's the technology we are developing to license. >> initially the project will bring 1,400 construction jobs to camden and 4,000 permanent positions and whole tech will help make camden a job center in south jersey. you will no longer be able to enter the common areas of granite run mall in middle town township in delaware county. it officially closed its doors yesterday. however, according to the delaware county times its two anchor stores including sears, will continue to be open for business. the entire project will be demolished later on this year for a 20 million redevelopment project.

may be returning to put some extra cash in your wallet. drivers with ez pass who take round trips across the local bridges could get a discount. the discount ended in 2011 but officials say it could be back later on this year. if you ride patco, a new schedule is starting this weekend that could affect your commute. patco will run a single track on sunday. eastbound and westbound trains will share one track along the ben franklin bridge and allow crews to work around the clock to get a major project finished ahead of schedule. health experts want anyone who is planning to grill this weekend to be aware of the potential dangers of food-borne illness. 60 million americans get sick from this each year. they say good food handling practices could prevent most cases. for example, meat and poultry should be put on the grill immediately once they are brought outdoors and rinsing raw
