morning with breaking news out of tennessee. a massive evacuation near knoxville where at least one train car carrying toxic gas has derailed and caught fire. katie roads from our northboundbc affiliate has more. >> reporter: i'm about 159 miles away from knoxville. we have one emergency shelter up for about 200 people who have come here as part of an train evacuation that leaked poisonous gas in the air. so far 5,000 people have been evacuated. this morning 5,000 residents in tennessee have been evacuated from their homes and sent to a temporary shelter after a freight train carrying a highly flammable and toxic gas caught fire on wednesday night. the train was heading to georgia when one car came off the track sparking the blaze. the cargo included a chemical

call called acrylonitrile. an evacuation zone covering a two mile radius could be in place for up to 48 hours. >> i didn't think about anything other than getting us out. >> ten deputies were taken to the hospital after breathing in the fumes. according to the epa if inhaled at high levels it can cause headaches, nausea and kidney irritation. this resident said his family was surprised by the evacuation and they're eagerly waiting to go back home. >> they were a little panicked, but they were, you know once we figured out everything they kind of calmed down a little bit. >> reporter: and as for the cause of this investigation, it's something that is still a fluid situation and one we're getting details at each minute. something we'll learn more throughout the day. matt back to you in the studio. >> katie roach on the scene of that story in tennessee. thank you very much. following other breaking

news. a powerful storm system spawning tornados in the midwest. dylan is in for al. >> there were six reported tornados yesterday. two were caught on camera in lee summit missouri. i wanted to say north carolina too. it's on the brain! >> i got you started. it's my fault. you can see how the swirling action picks up the debris off the roof. it's just outside of kansas city missouri and, you know, you can't really see the darkness to the funnel cloud because it doesn't really get dark until it picks up all that debris and the dirt on the ground. we have another tornado in the same area. more of a relationshiprope tornado. reports of gas leaks, roof and barn damage in the general area. this is a pretty highly populated area. we're also seeing flooding because of the storms. they produced downpours. there were rescues. look at the people getting rescued out of the waist-deep

waters. we had dogs being rescued in some of these situations because the flooding was so intense and happened in such a short period of time that the residents in this area had nowhere else to go. that was because of this stalled front that is sitting right through the midwest. here is kansas city. lee summit is right near there. it's a suburb outside of kansas city. the heaviest rain is pushing to the south. we have the downpours all though the flash flooding threat is going away for now, we could see it kick back in later today. we're not looking at a lot of tornados in the forecast for today but looking at wind near 60 miles per hour. hail up to 2 inches diameter is possible. it's in the zone we could see the flash flooding little rock memphis, and south of nashville tennessee we could end up with 3 to 4 inches of rain. it's the flash flooding that causes a lot of concern in those areas. >> dylan, thank you very much. now the story in north carolina i was thinking about. and a so-called perfect storm for shark attacks. a record seven so far this

season. the latest just on wednesday. with the fourth of july weekend getting underway obviously a lot of people are on edge. nbc gabe gutierrez is in north carolina's outer banks. gabe, good morning to you. >> matt good morning. emergency crews will be on heightened alert heading into the holiday weekend. right now there are no plans to close the beaches. this morning the latest victim is in fair condition. a shark surge off north carolina's outer banks. the most recent victim a 68-year-old man attacked while swimming in waist deep water just 30 feet from shore. bitten several times on his leg, hip, and both hands. eye witnesses say the victim was able to swim to shore before being air lifted to a nearby hospital. >> i saw a baseball size chunk taken out above his knee. >> reporter: there's been an alarming rise in the number of shark attacks here.

seven in the past three weeks. last friday 47-year-old patrick thorton was seriously injured in a terrifying encounter. he said he feared for his life. >> i could see the fins slowly coming by me. a shark is upon me. it's attacking me. this could be it. >> reporter: since mid june 8-year-old survived an attack but 12-year-old kristin lost an arm so did 16-year-old hunter treschl. this morning a boy is recovering from a shark attack from down shore in north carolina. experts say warm weather could be a factor. >> we've had great weather so we've had more people in the water on average each day. >> leaving beach goers to wonder how safe are the waters. >> you take a risk every time you go in the water. you could be bit by a shark. everybody knows that.

>> reporter: obviously tourism is huge here in north carolina. they expect millions of visitors here every summer. local leaders are in no hurry to close the beaches ahead of the july 4th weekend. they consider the attacks very rare. over the past few weeks we've seen plenty of beach goers out here. some go in the water and many of them staying close to the shore. >> it's such a beautiful part of the country. thank you for your reporting. federal authorities are sounding the alarm about the upcoming holiday weekend sending an alert to law enforcement agencies to be on board. we had the chance to go inside the huge security operation to protect new york city the nation's largest city. a massive show in force in direct response to a heightened threat. calls from islamic militants to launch spectacular attacks with the fourth of july holiday coinciding with the muslim holly month of ramadan. ice -- the nypd launched a

dynamic response. james waters is the chief of the counter terrorism bureau. >> new york is always a target. fourth of july a potential time for an attack. is there something about this year where there's heightened concern? >> the last couple of day ss makes us more aware here. we're on guard 24 hours a day. >> isis encourages the followers to launch attacks by any means they have at their hands. the nature of the new threat is the lone wolf. one person with a knife, a gun, with a bomb who potentially could really do a lot of damage. >> that's very true. low tech high yield. >> how do you guard against something like that it. >> you have to rely on intelligence. we have robust intention bureau here and the police department.

there's no specific credible threat against new york city but in the wake of the alert posted by the department of homeland security. they're on extra edge. the cameras can zoom in from thousands of feet. >> they have to be able to do that with the kinds of threats they look at. >> impressive. now an investigation is going to anger a lot of people who bought a plane ticket recently. the justice department says itself looking into whether the nation's airlines have been colewding to limit the number of availability seats. that in an effort to keep air fares high. nbc's tom costello covers aviation. he's at reagan national airport. tom, tell us more. >> hey, matt. good morning. 3 million people are flying over the travel period over the holiday weekend. as you know if you fly recently planes are packed. so now federal investigators looking into whether the airlines are working to keep the planes full, fewer seats means higher ticket prices which means higher profits.

this morning some of the nation's biggest airlines confirm they're under federal investigation. it has to do with the word federal investigators say has been used a lot by airline executives discipline. usually in keeping the number of available seats or capacity low to keep profits high. >> maintaining capacity discipline is a code word that the airlines use, which is a fancy way of saying let's keep the number of flights lower so we can raise prizeces. >> the justice department tells nbc news it's investigating possible unlawful coordination from some airlines. from 2009 to 2014 airline ticket prices rose 13%. there are fewer big airlines competing for customers. since 2007 through a series of mergers, nine airlines have slunk to just four controlling 80% of the market. today the airlines are earning record profit through higher ticket prices fewer seats, extra charges for luggage, leg

room even overhead bin space. some wall street analysts say doesn't mean they're colewding. >> to say they're playing nice because of consolidation is unfair to some extent. >> many airline customers complain flying isn't what it used to be. >> i think the prices have gone way up. >> they charge you from every little thing. >> by the way, the summer travel season is just now hitting its peak. yeah united delta, and southwest tell nbc news they are cooperating with the investigation. matt back to you. >> what is frustrating to people they're seeing the high air fares at this particular time when fuel prices are low and you think that the airlines would be passing along the savings in that area to the consumer. >> yeah that's right. fuel prices are down $2.20 from the peak 2008.

when i asked the airlines about it said if you go to a coffee chain and suddenly the price of coffee beans drops, your price of coffee doesn't necessarily drop because those stores are going to hopefully recoup some lost profits. in the view of the airlines it's the same thing. they're not necessarily going to pass on to the consumer the price of jet fuel because tomorrow it could be higher. >> i hope that means the jet fuel prices go up they don't make the prices higher. let's turn to natalie following a deadly accident. >> at least 36 people are dead 19 missing after an inner island ferry capsized. the coast guard said more than 100 people were rescued when it went down in strong winds and high waves a few hundred feet from the shores. new details about the plane crash in taiwan in february. aviation officials say the transasia airways captain

mistaken by switched off the aircraft's only working engine seconds before it crashed. 43 people were killed. the investigation also reveals about three minutes after takeoff the captain was heard saying quote wow pulled back the wrong side throttle. the cause of the crash under investigation. a federal appeals court is telling officials in louisiana, mississippi, and texas they must comply with last week's u.s. supreme court ruling on gay marriage. wednesday's order was issued the same day a federal judge in alabama told counties in the state that they had to abide by the high court's decision and could no longer refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. dramatic video shows residents jumping to safety after a fire broke out in their apartment building in georgia. a young woman was trapped inside when neighbors came to help her out coaxing her to jump she leapt to safety in the arms of

her neighbors. moments later a younger girl appeared in the window. she jumped out. officials say 11 families were left without a home as a result of the fire. thanks to the neighbors all doing well. now back to the heartbreaking finish wednesday night in the semifinal game in the world cup between england and japan. it's not the end result but the unlikely game winning goal that has everyone talking this morning. morning. it was a heartbreaking loss and a cruel ending to what had been a history-making tournament for england. in their first time playing in the world cup semifinals england, the underdog, tied the match against japan 1-1, but the devastating blow came near the end with just second left on the lock laura bass set kicked a goal scoring for japan and

the national weather service confirmed that the twister touched down in honeybrook on tuesday afternoon. the official word in this case is that there was no tornado in lehigh county. nonetheless plenty of damage. national weather service determined that a micro burst made this mess on tuesday. those winds caused a great deal of damage in hanover township. meteorologist bill henley has the details for today's forecast. bill? we are getting heavy downpours. that now includes cape may, which was dry a half hour ago. heavy rainfall is moving through beach avenue. cape may will see a drenching to start with. it will taper off in the next few minutes. the chance of showers will stay with us. light showers in philadelphia, and more coming up from the southwest including some thunderstorms. be on the lookout for those storms. they're keeping things cooler today. 71 in philadelphia. 73 for cape may. >> remember, you can get the
