good morning. so far so good. despite fears of a terrorist attack on the fourth of july the day was largely quiet amid a massive police presence in the nation's biggest cities. are we out of the woods? holiday may him. a california plane comes in for a crash landing on a crowded beach as rescue crews search for missing party goers. in kentucky a family photosprint pcs goes wrong when a deck collapses a the north carolina beach house. up in flames a fireworks explosion in sacramento california starts a grass fire forcing people to run for safety while elsewhere in california a raging wild fire threatens homes as firefighters racing against the clock battling fierce winds.

>> such an exciting. >> natalie is in her element. she's so happy to be there now. >> and looking great in the shirt, too. >> yeah! >> we'll go to vancouver in a bit, also of course it was the fourth. in addition to fireworks there's the tradition that happens every year on coney island. the hot dog competition. there was a huge upset this year. we're not talking about upset stomachs. the winners here in the studio -- we'll get to them in a moment. let's get to the top story. the string of accidents in july 4th parties. gabe gutierrez has that this morning. >> reporter: chaos around the country on the fourth of july. overnight in louisville kentucky a frantic search after boat hit a bridge and capsized in powerful currents on the ohio river. at least two people dead. six pulled from the water with as many as three others believed missing. >> the water is very rapid. we're unable to put divers in the water due to the current,

the speed of the current, so, you know i would say we're continuing to search on the surface of the water. >> out west in carlsbad california caught on camera. a small plane was forced to make an emergency landing on the beach as people scrambled. the plane flipping over when it hit the water. amazingly no one was seriously hurt including the pilot. on the famous board walk in atlanta city new jersey a major fire forced firefighters into action. four people were hurt in utah when a deck collapsed. none critically. in north carolina a family had crowded on to a deck to take a holiday photograph when the structure gave away crashing ten feet to the ground. it happened around 7:00 last night. neighbors rushed outside when they heard children screaming. >> i came around the corner and there was -- i was on the phone with 9-1-1. i just counted people on the ground and i counted up to 21 and i just said you need to get as many units as you can here.

chance of stronger storms later on today. unsettled in the southeast but heavier pockets of rain and thunderstorms through kentucky making their way into georgia. we could see some flash flooding just because of the amount of rain that has fallen recently and more rain in the forecast from charleston west virginia to atlanta. here is that cold front and again we have a chance of stronger storms through bismarck north dakota. it's later on this afternoon we'll see the thunderstorms redevelop. especially through south dakota this afternoon and evening. hail up to 2 inches in diameters, wind gusts near 70 miles per hour. the southwest a little bi i'm brittney shipp. a high of 79 in atlantic city. 79 in cape may. a big improvement from yesterday. temperatures inland will also be warmer ranging from 84 to 86. more sunshine and warmer for us. changes are in store as we head into the seven-day forecast.

think some people will say he was a little slow to criticize trump, but now he's not been slow at all. he's sort of increased the sound on his rhetoric against donald trump over the last few days. but trump is sticking with this because it is resonating short term. i think that's what we should be focussed on here. there is a chunk of the republican electorate. it is not the majority who would like to see a republican candidate be more antagonistic be more brash. the question is when trump flames out -- it's never if it's when. where do the trump voters go? this morning on meet the press you'll hear ted cruz who is not bashing trump. i think he would like to be the home for the voters going forward. >> it will be interesting to see how they vie for the votes. hillary clinton spent the fourth campaigning. she was in new hampshire. walked in a parade along with a rope that is getting a lot of attention. her staffers say the rope is

there so people can see her better. kind of impossible to ignore the optics of this. to have your candidate roped off. will it backfire? >> it does. the optics look terrible. i'm sympathetic to the campaign's complaint. she has a large media group following her around it makes it hard because of the media for her to interact with voters. i think there's a fine line there. we as journalist when you're covering a candidate who is campaigning for the support of voters we should be there to cover the candidate campaigning with voters but i think how the clinton campaign went about doing this seemed to i think, backfire. this is sort of what head scratching to me erica, they've done it for 25 years. how is is clinton not used to this? how do they not have a better plan? >> chuck, thanks. we'll check in later on "meet the press." ted cruz will be your guest this morning. to the english country side where crowds are building. their hoping to catch a glimpse

customs enforcement or i.c.e. in march he was handed over to the san francisco sheriff's department for an outstanding warrant possession and distribution of marijuana on march 27th the charges were dismissed. on april 15th sanchez was released. immigration agents asked to be notified of the release but the sheriff's department didn't do that. as so called sanctuary city it doesn't enforce federal immigration holds. >> the city policy city law is very clear that we don't honor i.c.e. detainers. >> experts like julie meyers-wood a former i.c.e. director said there should be less politics and more cooperation between i.c.e. and local agencies especially in situations like the sanchez case. donald trump under fire for his comments about immigrants tweeted his condolences to the family saying this tragic murder has taken place because of our unsafe border. as for her parents, they hope something good can come from this. >> if kate's death saves other
