be no more money. >> no money. >> reporter: there is a line at the atm there, another one just here and in the same street further down. prime minister will greece run out of money? this morning, the greek prime minister called an emergency meeting for the country's leaders. he believes europe will now negotiate a last-minute deal for greece. many greeks believe him, pouring into the streets last night, 60% voted no to europe's debt demands. now they think greece's massive loans will be reduced. they're celebrating like they just won the super bowl. but this morning, the world is waking up to more financial uncertainty. >> european markets opened sharply lower. you can expect u.s. markets to open lower as well. just how much really depends on whether or not greece can get a deal done. >> reporter: and the feekt of this crisis with greece facing a 1930s style depression will be felt around the world. and as greece breaks away from

europe and if its economy collapses, it does have more than just financial implications. this country has a u.s. naval base, and yet there is ongoing talk about it getting closer to russia. and this morning, hoda we're hearing that president putin will talk with the prime minister of greece today. hoda? >> keir simmons in athens. a story we'll be following closely today. let's talk politics today and a busy weekend for presidential candidates. donald trump appeared on fox news on saturday standing by those comments he made about mexican immigrants but admitting he didn't expect the business backlash to be quite this severe. those are his words. since his announcement trump has lost a number of partnerships with large companies, including nbc universal. many of the other gop candidates weighed in as well including rick perry, ted cruz mike huckabee and jeb bush, who blasted trump. >> he's doing this to inflame and to incite and to draw attention, which seems to be his organizing principle of his

campaign. >> reporter: meanwhile, hillary clinton's campaign caused a stir when they roped the press off during a fourth of july parade up in new hampshire. campaign staffers said they did it so clinton would be more visible to parade-watchers. but their decision also kept the press at bay when protesters began shouting critical comments about benghazi and her e-mails. the new hampshire gop called the move quote, arrogant and shame shameful behavior. hillary's campaign responded by saying while the gop may want to spin a good yarn on this let's not get tied up in knots. meantime former fugitive david sweat is out of the hospital and back behind bars this morning, as new reports surface about what happened on the night of his prison break with richard matt. here is nbc's national correspondent, miguel almaguer. >> reporter: hours before david sweat and richard matt escaped from clinton correctional their

alleged get away driver had a moment of clarity. that according to the "buffalo news" citing a law enforcement official in the search. she had a realization this was d-day and the fantasy she had been living for almost a year was now becoming a reality. that included the murder of her husband. the article also says matt told mitchell earlier that day the escape is on. pick us up at midnight. he then gave her two pills meant to inca pass at a time her husband. the report has not been verdict and mitchell's attorney denies she wanted to kill her husband. lyle told matt lauer last month he believes the decision saved their lives. >> had she shown up in that get-away car, both of you would be dead right now? >> absolutely 100%. >> reporter: the details come a week after sweat was captured and shot twice in the back. matt was killed by police two days early. sunday sweat was released from the hospital and headed for five

points correctional facility 270 miles from clinton, where life on the honor block had its perks. >> radios are playing. they can cook shower. i mean it's just -- it's kind of like a block party. >> all of that is now over for him. david sweat will be completely alone in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day. of. >> reporter: inside his new cell just a bed, toilet shower and what is described as a writing platform. not the ending sweat had been planning for. for "today," miguel almaguer nbc news, los angeles. >> and tamron is here now with the confederate flag back in the headlines again. >> indeed it is. good morning, everyone. all eyes on south carolina today as the legislature starts debating whether to keep the confederate battle flag at the state capitol in columbia. south carolina's governor is among those calling for the flag to come down. the support of its removal grew after nine african-american church-goers were shot to death at the emmanuel a.m.e. search.

a media survey in south carolina last month found enough votes to write bri the flag down if the legislature doesn't pass a bill. one lawmaker has said he'll call for a referendum and let the voters decide. a massive flier at a orlando, florida, resort has guests running for safety. flames at the avonte resort. hotel staff went door to door to warn visitors. 500 rooms were evacuated. many people were left looking for a new place to stay. fire officials say they believe lightning was to blame for this but the cause of the fire still under investigation. news from the nfl this morning. new york giants star jason pierre-paul apparently injured his hand in a fireworks accident near miami this weekend. according to several reports, pierre-paul hurt one or both of his hands while trying to light fireworks during a fourth of july celebration. he was reportedly taken to the hospital in broward county florida.

the extent of his injuries not known at this point. but according to espn's adam schefter it is not career-threatening. sad news this morning. burt behind the burt bee's past away. a message on the company's facebook page says he'll be remembered as a free spirited man, a beekeeper, wisecracker, lover of gold en retrievers and his land. he was 80 years old. no word on the cause of his death but he is certainly legendary. a wild finish and frightening one overnight. nascar race at daytona. the race did not end until 2:41 in the morning which means none of us were up. this all because of a weather delay. it is this crash that everyone is talking about, the last lap. a car made contact with austin dylan's car sending it sailing upside down and into a fence. amazingly, dylan walked away from that accident suffering

only a bruised tailbone and forearm. several fans were hit by the debris, four treated on the site. one taken to the hospital. amazingly, no one seriously hurt. by the way, dale earnhardt jr. won that race and if you can tell me two members of his pit crew you get a "today" show mug. i'm quizzing you. >> you and dylan. >> natalie. >> natalie was your teammate? >> they were on the winning team for the other pit. >> oh but we were the winner of the nascar -- >> i guess that matters a little more. >> can we go back though and see that footage again. those fences that they build -- obviously, some debris went through the fence. but the fact that that fence can hold back a race car going 100 miles per hour or plus is extraordinary. >> isn't that extraordinary? and the fact that all those people are there at 2:41 in the morning. they came out. nobody went home. >> trial and error and testing to ensure the safety of the people there. because we have seen when this goes really bad.

>> it's a surprise. no one is expecting an airplane to land on the beach. >> reporter: cory could tell something was wrong so he started recording this video. >> i think the pilot did a good job of picking a good spot to land and making sure he waited until the last possible minute to touch down so there was fewer chance he was going to hit anyone. >> reporter: the faa says the plane had been towing a banner ad when the engine lost power, forcing the 23-year-old pilot to land quickly. a 12-year-old boy identified by family as nicholas bear suffered a head injury when he was hit by part of the plane. he is in serious condition. other than that no one else was hurt not even the pilot. >> i'm so thankful and blessed that you know so many -- it could have been worse. >> reporter: investigators must now figure out why the engine failed. the plane is owned by a company called air ads. >> this airplane i inspected no more than last week. we did an oil change. everything was perfect. it flew yesterday and everything was fine. >> reporter: but on the fourth

of july something went wrong. >> i was like oh my gosh everyone run, get out, run! >> reporter: with a dangerously close call on a crowded holiday beach. for "today," joe fryer, nbc news los angeles. >> everybody is saying that pilot did a great job to put it down as close to the water as possible. >> right. >> with that -- all those people sitting on the beach. >> amazingly, only one person hurt. >> let's get a check of the weather now from dylan. >> we still have very, very hot temperatures in the northwest. in fact seattle is breaking records. yesterday was the fifth consecutive day of temperatures at 90 degrees or higher. the last four days have broken record high temperatures. the fourth of july was the hottest it has ever been in seattle, and it is going to be hot again today. we have these heat advisories and also some red flag warnings because not only is it hot, but it's very dry and a little bit breezy as well. temperatures should make it up to 90 degrees. this would break the record for consecutive days of 90 or higher in seattle. yakima washington 101 degrees, 17 degrees above average. we are looking for highs to stay well up into the 80s and 90s,

fire trucks from reaching one threatened neighborhood but a fire boat was able to save several lakefront homes. investigators still searching for the cause of the fire which broke out sunday afternoon. meantime firefighters are battling a massive fire this morning at an industrial building just outside of cleveland. the north shore strapping company makes packaging materials and equipment. black smoke was visible for miles. still no word on what may have caused the fire or if there were any injuries. and more than 1 million people are expected to attend a mass celebrated by pope francis today in ecuador. nbc's ann thompson is in the capital city. good morning, ann, good to see you. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. pope francis will travel to ecuador's largest city where he will celebrate mass and also meet with an old friend and mentor. just one of several personal connections the first pope from latin america is expected to make on this trip.

pope francis is welcomed with a hail of flowers, one of the many abundant natural resources in this otherwise poor country. the winds took the pope's skull cap before he even got down the stairs of the plane. speaking before ecuador's president, france noted the singular beauty of ecuador and emphasized two themes of this trip. caring for the people marginalized by society and pursuing socially responsible economic development. beyond ecuador, the pope will visit bolivia, where almost half the population lives in poverty, and paraguay. all three companies are overwhelmingly catholic but none are economic powers. in fact they are far from it. >> these countries are minor countries in latin america. and that's why he's going to them. because he wants to be with these people on the periphery. >> reporter: and though the crowds will be different when the pope comes to the states in

and it truly was -- this was a team effort through and through. the u.s. scoring five total goals. japan getting only two past hope solo. but truly an impressive performance, and the women taking home their third world cup. it is of course history for the u.s. women's national team. >> natalie, we got to watch on tv, except for me, i missed the first 15 minutes. but for those who were in the stadium, what did it feel like being there, watching it all happen especially that beginning portion? >> reporter: you know the first 2:35 carli lloyd scored her first goal and from that moment on we were on our feet. i did not sit down in my seat probably until the 85th minute or so. because the entire place was just electric. it was thrilling, it was amazing. and these girls really proved they have their stuff together. it was unbelievable. and as a soccer fan, it truly was icing on the cake.

so why are some of us just naturally happy? and how can you learn to be happier at home and at work? nbc's special anchor maria shriver, has more on all of this. hey, maria. >> hey, you guys nice to see you. happy to see you. the question a lot of people have is is happiness born or bred? can you genuinely be a happy person? is this something you can learn? well back in 2012 the u.s. ranked 23rd in the united nation's world happiness report. well that, ranking led two film makers on a journey to find out the secrets of the happiest people in america. happiness. a feeling. a smile. a laugh. a moment in life. >> happiness is impacted by the way we're raised. some of it is genetic. it has to do with the circumstances that we are currently in. but ultimately happiness can be generated from the inside of us.

>> filmmakers adam shell and nicholas kraft created a kickstarter campaign asking for referrals for their film "pursuing happiness." they traveled across the country, and interviewed more than 400 people. and along the way, found some happy people. ♪ why is writing and selling joke books a happy thing to do? >> because it makes me happy. >> every day i wake up and think what's going to happen today? >> i look for the funny. i think life is too short. >> bye. what are we going to do today? >> our very best. >> supercalifragilistic- expialidocious day. >> reporter: many people say they actually choose to be happy. >> you also say that it's people who make a conscience decision to choose happiness. >> i immediately think of gloria who at 28, you know was on track to be a partner at her law firm and at 28 she was

diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. >> so i have a blood clot. >> she said this beautiful thing. she goes to get excited about the future is almost disrespectful to the dead. >> the only thing we're in control of is how we live and the choices we make. and the choice to be happy and to be positive. and the choice to be grateful. >> reporter: there are also those who find happiness comes from their community. >> let's get this. >> reporter: like the guys behind sit on it detroit, who builds benches for people waiting for the bus. >> it makes me really happy when i see people that are happy when we're installing the benches. >> happy customers. i told you. >> reporter: others like john lawson who lost both his hands in a fire live life to its fullest every day. >> you are happy. you're making others happy. that's the best thing you can do. >> happiness doesn't come from having a perfect life.

it comes from having to make the imperfections perfect or how do deal with them. >> reporter: someone once said to me you can't really know happiness and joy unless you also know pain and sorrow. >> i have to say, you can't be a human without having both ends of the spectrum. what happens when something bad does happen? how do we get from that place to a place of happiness? finding your way back to a place of happiness in the midst of that is really the most incredible thing. ♪ >> the biggest takeaway for us in making this film was the experience of meeting and really falling in love with all these people who exemplify how to be happy. >> it startses with a great reminder and hopefully inspiration for real change. >> the thing that was so inspiring to me was that all of

these people actually get up every morning and say i want to choose that. and there is actually a science behind that that people -- you can actually see your brain change when you choose happiness. so when that alarm went off at 2:30 this morning, i chose happiness. i said i'm going to go talk to some really happy people i'm so happy to get up and come here this morning. >> but you know, what maria, not to get too personal. but what you said to those film makers on camera you and i have talked about. how a lot of people believe that you can't really understand happiness and joy unless you have experienced some pain and sorrow in your life. you're a little like that too, by the way. >> absolutely yeah. >> well i think that that was really exciting because many people when they go through hard times, when somebody dies when they get divorced when they move they get fired, they think i'll never be happy again. and the research shows that's not the case. that people actually come out better versions of their former selves and they experience joy again. so there's a lot to be excited about, a lot to be optimistic about. >> right. >> maria, that was terrific. that was really great.

it's going away. how long do you have to work at that? >> probably 30 seconds, a minute. you don't want to rub it too hard. >> jewelry. we've all had jewelry that's gotten tarnished or silverware and that kind of stuff. you say lemon juice? >> lemon juice is a miracle. you have it in your cabinet or kitchens. you take old tarnished jewelry or metal and put some lemon juice -- tablespoon and a half in a cup cup of water. >> not too much lemon juice. >> no and you can see it comes right off. >> now, i would imagine for jewelry there is some you should use it for and symptom steer clear. >> do not do this with pearls or gold. but all metals. >> how long should you soak them? >> you can soak it if you want -- shouldn't hurt it at all. it's just lemon juice. -- >> just for a few seconds? >> yeah if it's a stubborn stain, leave it in longer. >> you're right, it's working. >> comes right off. >> like it. this is my favorite one coming up. i wish they had this at the nail

cheesecake jars everything looks cuter in a jar. >> two ingredients to start with. these are just cookies. >> we want to run through ingredients real quickly. lemon cookies, a bit of butter raspberries, lemon zest and lemon juice. cream cheese whipping cream and powdered sugar. >> so simple when you see it laid out. let's begin with the bottom layer. >> we smash up some cookies. >> i would love to do it. wow. you're welcome. so you smoosh them up. >> once they're nice and finally smooshed tip over your melted butter. do you want to stir that through? >> sure. just so it's moist, right? >> you want them almost starting to stick together but not too much. >> all right. >> we're going to build them in these cute mason jars but you can use a martini glass. >> so anything you have around will work. >> exactly. >> so i put a layer on the bottom? >> pop a little in. >> just a little? >> i like to split it in half. i like a crunchy base. >> that's our first layer.

>> nice and i'll pat it down. >> and then we're adding berries. so you can us obviously any kind of berries you have. >> any kind of berries you like. with the raspberries, layer them on the outside of the glass so you can see them through. that's right. while you're doing that i'm going to whip the cream. just make sure it's not too whipped. you can see the consistency, it's not going to overwhip when we mix it through the rest. >> okay all right. the guys are downstairs eating. how is it tasting, guys? >> i turned mine upside down. >> carson dug into the cookie. >> very tart. but then it's sweeter down below. >> see, the sweetness is down -- you're adding lemon zest. >> lemon zest. if you haven't zested a lemon before i'm using a micro plain. but you can use -- just get the very, very fine skin. but you don't want to see the white pith underneath. and then we have cream cheese and powdered sugar, lemon zest and lemon juice. >> sounds delicious.

it's an unusual way that it's made also. isn't that true that a lot of it was improvised to make it as realistic as possible? >> most of the dialogue about 85%, ended up being improvisation. we went into it and pretty much got an outline every day. we wouldn't get the scenes until that morning. we never knew what we were shooting. we could pick up the camera any time we wanted to. >> a lot of people say that would be hard. saying what comes to the top of your head. i think that makes it harder. >> in a weird way, it did. a lot of times we were actually scared in dark hallways by ourselves. we kept it small. the casting crew totalled about serve seven. and occasionally people coming from l.a. but wanted to do it outside the hollywood norm. >> do you like this genre, or would you like to set -- you've done movies in the past. do you want to set your sights on different things? >> i did grow up loving horror movies much to my mother's dismay. she thought i was a freak. i want to do other things but it was great to start where i

already 78 degrees in philadelphia pottstown at 74 77 in northeast philadelphia and wilmington and roxborough 74 while south philadelphia is 76. through the 70s into the 80s and likely see scattered showers, possibly a thunderstorm later this afternoon. >> a shooting in philadelphia's frankfurt neighborhood sent a man to the hospital. it happened around 11:30 last night at erat street. police tell us several people approached the victim opened fire jumped into a car and took off. the victim is in critical condition. around 10:30, someone shot a man in philadelphia's mantua neighborhood. police took him to the hospital and he is in critical condition. investigators still looking for the gunman in that case. and there is a $20,000 reward offered as police look for the person who stabbed a young mother to death in a philadelphia store parking lot. the teenage girl on her way home from a fourth of july celebration in hunting park when

is like i've got one more thing. >> no, here's what happened. before the commercial break we had been there for two hours. so willie goes, nothing else matters. we've been great for the last -- >> i didn't say that. >> but this last thing we have to really stick it. well, my heart started racing and i got all nervous. and the script said, "let's get it started" and i'm like "let's get it started"! >> but it was the thought on the teleprompter -- the thing that was -- >> i knew, because there was someone clearly counting us down in my ear, but in front of me it said "let's get it started" and i look over at willie and he has that look like "shut up!" >> so it was a quick, 2, 1. >> i never knew the word "started" was a whole second. and it came out of my mouth and it was just a disaster. >> to viewers it was seamless. >> it was not.

landing. carlsbad beach in california. this is near san diego. according to the faa, the plane was flying a banner ad when the engine lost power. this -- look at people playing volleyball. they don't even notice the plane crash-landing near them. now they notice and they rush right over. witnesses say a 12-year-old boy suffered a head injury when he was actually clipped by or a part of the debris hit him. remarkably, no one else was injured. all of those people on the plane the pilot is getting credit for that landing which i don't know what his options were. >> right. >> but it is crazy what all of those people on a holiday weekend -- >> yeah. and that little boy is okay. he was injured, but he's okay. >> the 12-year-old got hit by part of the plane but he's going to be okay. >> it could be nonlife threatening, but serious. >> that's incredible. all right. let's get to the women's world cup this is what everybody was talking about. team usa winning 5-2 over japan.

it was a walk-away. they scored four goals right out of the box, and natalie was there to see the whole thing. hey, natalie. >> hey guys. i've got to tell you, emotions were running high here. 53,000 people in this stadium and all of us were on our feet probably for the first 16 minutes of the game, as you said willie. within the first two-and-a-half minutes, carli lloyd had already scored the first goal for the u.s. women's national team. and we knew from that moment on that we were going to be witnessing magic in the stadium. two minutes later she scored yet again. and i think the goal, though, that everybody is still talking about this morning is that hat trick from mid field. she saw japan's goalie come out of the goal and she saw that as an opportunity. and that's when she took that shot. it was the first time ever in a final in a world cup that a player has ever been able to pull off a hat trick like that and make that goal. it was truly remarkable. so it was 4-0 in the first half

going into the second half, japan managed to come back and get two goals. but the u.s. winning it. heath scored the first goal. 5-2. truly an amazing night here and fans were partying all night long. i went to bed early but i could hear the parties around me guys. >> you saw the celebration from afar, natalie. >> you were up all night. we know that's true. >> i've got to say -- yeah, yeah i can't. no i wasn't, i promise you. but i know someone who was and that was carli lloyd. she pretty much told matt she was simply exhausted. she got no sleep, up all night with her teammates celebrating their victory. here's what she had to say a little bit earlier on today. >> it just didn't feel real. i don't know why i don't know if it was because of the fashion how it was a 5-2 game. it was just -- it was unbelievable. >> i want to read you a list of all of the people -- all of the incredible players who have gotten a hat trick in the of a

nbc's hit show "american ninja warrior" puts competitors through a grueling obstacle course. does natalie have what it takes to be a ninja warrior? natalie, how did you do? >> no. i got to tell you, it is so much fun to watch on the couch. but even more fun to compete. maybe just a little bit scary, too. i visited the set recently. they were based in san pedro, california for their military appreciation week. and take a look how i did. >> travis rosen drew dreshle and natalie morales! >> here i am on the set of "american ninja warrior"! i am freaking out. even behind the scenes, the course is intimidating. they look so easy on tv. wow! he did that with ease. that will not be the case for me. i needed a little advice from co host matt iceman. >> don't hit the money maker.

since 1999 the u.s. women's soccer team is the world cup champion. team usa beat japan 5-2 in the shining star was a burlington county native. carli lloyd scored three goals in the first 16 minutes of the final, a world cup record. she had six goals overall in the tournament, also a world cup record. the americans are the first country with three women's titles overall and the hometowns are still celebrating this morning. president obama sent his congratulations via twitter and said what a win for team usa. great game carli lloyd. your country is proud of all of you, come visit the white house with the world cup soon. we're sure they will. and today is the first day on the job for the first woman president of lasalle university. doctor colleen hanycz comes from canada where she pro sided over a college in ontario and the first nonclergy member to serve as the president. we'll be back with another update in about 25 minutes.

taking a look at the headlines, stock markets in europe and asia showed signs of jitters overnight after voters in greece rejected the belt-tightening terms of an international bailout. european leaders will hold emergency talks to see if a new deal can be reached to help greece renegotiate its massive debt and avoid financial collapse. mastercard is testing a facial recognition app to help verify your identity when you make an online purchase. users hold up their phones, selfie style, to scan their face and send the image to mastercard. they're also required to blink to prove that you're real and it's not a picture. the app can also be used to check a person's fingerprints. that's incredible. amazon is promising more bargains than on black friday alone to celebrate its 20th birthday. the retail giant says july 15th

dermatologists who got a wake-up call when they quickly went from doctors to patients. >> being a doctor is such a fulfilling career. i get to know my patients well but have sadly seen many young women develop skin cancer through the years. i never thought it would happen to me. so my diagnosis of medical nama at the age of 37 came as a shock. i noticed a small dark mole on my leg. i had two babies and a form of skin cancer. thankfully, it was in the earliest stages to my prognosis was excellent. i learned that bad things can literally pop up out of nowhere so i make a point for me and my family to celebrity the little things every day. my entire family loved the sun. our vacations were always at the beach and we spent hours outside without protection. i had always wanted to be a doctor, but then i learned the hard way what it means to be a patient. not only have i had skin cancer, but a few years after my

and it wasn't. it never developed like a pimple. so i had it biopsied and it was a base sal cell cancer. two years later i found it under my eye and later a tiny dark spot on my knee. i had been a canoe instructor, did everything wrong when i was little, suntanning salons, sun burns and had that biopsied and it was the earliest stage of melanoma melanoma. since then, thank goodness nothing. >> and you're going to run through some of the a, b, c, d and es. no one should take this for granted, even people with darker skin. >> the problem for people who have any type of pigment in their skin think they're immune to skin cancer. and people who are hispanic and asian and all different colors skin, they're the second-highest incidents of rising melanoma. >> a is for asimymmetricalasymmetrical. >> means you can't fold it in half and it would be a perfect circle. you can see here if you folded this in half, it wouldn't quite fit and match. so asymmetrical is an easy

beginner. >> b is for border. what does that mean? >> border means you don't -- you couldn't draw a nice fine pencil line around it. this is smudgy, scalloped. see it's curvy? look for that. >> these pictures by the way from the skin cancer foundation. and c is for color. >> color. so you should have one color. you have your signature mole color. if you have one that's changing or has multiple different colors this has i call it milk chocolate dark chocolate. this has red. you can even get grays and blues. and that's where the pigment is in your skin. >> it's becoming invasive. >> and as pointed out, these pictures were provided. would you be able to see this with your naked eye? >> you can can see -- if you do your skin checks once a month yourself, your brain will remember. so one thing starts standing out to you and you don't know why which abc it is, that's something to have your doctor check. >> diameter? >> diameter. so obvious often i find melanomas on people that are tiny. but if it's bigger than 6

millimeters they do a radial growth. if it's bigger than your pinky fingernail fingernail, it's too big. >> e is for evolving. >> this is the most important. your mind will pick up when something is changing on your skin. any change bigger, wider, darker, wider, crusty, bleedy, itching. these things you need to show your doctor. >> sun protection. and do skin cancer, take a hike, be out there but protect yourself. >> thank you so much. we're back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc.

showers, possibly thunderstorms developing this afternoon. already 79 degrees in philadelphia. on our way to the 80s with mostly cloudy skies and afternoon showers and possibly thunderstorms. this morning, philadelphia police are investigating a pair of shootings that left two men fighting for their lives. one happened around 11:30 last night on arrot street in frankford. police tell us several approached the victim opened fire and jumped in a car and took off. the victim is in critical condition. someone shot a man in philadelphia's mantua victim. police found the victim took him to the hospital. he is also in critical condition. investigators are looking for the gunman in that shooting as well. to summer vacation for these teachers, least not right now. the teachers are at a workshop under way this morning and will be all week for more than 700 teachers in the philadelphia school district. this is new video just into nbc 10. kindergarten through third grade teachers working to improve

[ laughter ] >> by the way i saw it on sunday. cass, this is one of those you should not watch by yourself and i realize that now. that particular one, i wondered how did you do that. i know you do stunts your've done stunts in other movies but you did your own stuff. >> we didn't have much of an option. that was what made the movie so great is that it was found footage, we did it guerrilla style, we had almost no money so it was seven of us including cast and crew and i was laying on a piece of cardboard holding on to the rope and there were guys pulling me down and i was bouncing off the walls getting rub burns on butt. >> she got rub burns on her

butt. you said you did want to be a rugrat. >> yes, thank you, mom. >> when you listen to the dialogue, it's so natural. that's the first thing i thought, you forget you're watching a movie. >> we honestly we would goo into the day not knowing what scenes we would be shooting. they would give us an outline of these are the points we needs to hit, this is what we need to get out of it, go. >> but you've done a lot of improvisational work. >> my audition was an improv audition. >> what did they tell you? in the audition what did they tell you to do? >> my mirs audition i had a couple scenes which had no relevance whatsoever. i was sitting on the train and a ghost went by and when i went in and did the call back with the rest of the cast we got to know each other, we would talk and then they would give us a scenario and they would say sit there you see something and you're trying to describe what you saw. these guys were so comfortable, they were so friends. but it helped because, you know they helped in the casting trow says.

>> one of the things that helped me out even more is that your name in the movie was cassidy. so when they said your name -- everyone used their own name, right? >> it was intentional because they wanted our reactions to be real. they wanted it not to be just like another found footage movie just like a home video type thing. they wanted to shoot it well and professionally but keep that relatability. >> and you really -- two years ago when you shot this originally you said "mom, don't worry, nobody's going to see this movie." now it's out there, 2500 screens. >> we can't believe it. to see where we started. it's like an underdog story. these two guys, our two directors, travis and chris, they fear from fresno, they were driving to l.a. for meetings sleeping in their van. >> it's a cool story. >> they did the editing. they had a vision for it and we were just lucky to be a part of it. >> you love horror movies, too, don't you? >> she would sneak out and watch them apparently.

>> i would. >> which ones? >> because cody is three years older than me so any time he and his friends were watching a movie i would sneak down and watch. >> which ones do you love. >> the first one i saw was "the shining" which i did see with you. you can't -- [ laughter ] and "what lies beneath" with harrison record. >> and michelle pfeiffer. >> sometimes when i take a bath or i'm in the pool by myself i'm scared. >> kathie lee, did you freak out a little. >>? i'm excited for her, she's got two other movies that are independents as well. she does all kinds of stunts. she came looking like she'd been -- you know. and when where she plays a girl sold into human trafficking. so i'm excited that maybe she deal a rom comm with somebody pretty soon and we'll go to italy. >> it's all about her. she quantities to go to italy. you didn't come to fresno. >> i went to austin, texas, with you last summer. >> and complained the whole

mayor nutter has been racking up frequent flyer miles lately visiting the united kingdom and israel also visited paris to try to attract new business to philly. he was in rome two weeks ago getting ready for the pope's visit. today, delran new jersey is celebrating their hometown girl carli lloyd. her hat trick led the u.s. women's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over japan in the world cup finals. lloyd grew up in delran and folks in that burlington county community say they are so proud of her. we have a full hour of news in about 30 minutes. get the latest news and weather with the nbc 10 app.
