overnight. he spent 13 years on the run until his celebrated capture in february of 2014. the 60-year-old had undergone facial reconstruction surgery. this is not the first time he's been on the lam. in 2001 he escaped the mexican prison in a laundry cart. flights have been suspended from local airports about 50 miles west of mexico city. u.s. officials will want to know how the crime boss was able to escape. prior to his arrest he was wanted in six different u.s. courts for smuggles billions of dollars of cocaine, meth heroin and marijuana across the border. now again, sheinelle we're checking with the white house and the justice department for reaction to this stunning overnight news. back to you. >> kristin welker thanks. to the mysterious accident we should say on a crowded rhode island beach that has some beach goers wondering for it is safe to return today. on a saturday a woman was hospitalized after eye witnesses

said an apparent explosion knocked her a reported 6 feet in the air. kristin is in rhode island today. good morning. what happened? >> good morning. let me first say the beach just reopened and there's actually a line of people waiting to get in. now imagine you're on the beach here right back there enjoying the day and boom. you're thrown into the rocks, sent to the hospital. the victim is expected to be okay. they don't think it's terrorism. they don't believe it's a bomb. but what did happen here still a mystery. >> it seemed like a typical sunny saturday morning at the beach. >> i heard a boom! the ground shook. at first i thought it was an earthquake. >> a woman was literally lifted up off her chair. >> police and emergency responders were called to the beach in rhode island just before noon. the injured woman was taken to

the hospital. eye witnesses telling an incredible story. responders we're told a sudden single blast sent the victim flying back ward into the rocks. >> a small explosion sub surface that erupted out the sand. >> investigators dug up the spot and began tediously sifting through the sand and inspecting the area. >> there are fractures in the wet sand gaps that occur, something like it would seen when lightning hits a beach. >> authorities evacuated and closed the beach after the incident. late last night the rhode island department of emergency management tweeted they planned to reopen the beach today. even though they still don't know what happened. they say they're confident the beach is safe. >> i have not been told of any

evidence that would suggest there is shrapnel or any kind of device. >> now they don't believe there are any gas lines in the area. the investigation continues today, but even with all the questions, peter, it's expected to be near 90 today. the beach expected to be packed. >> yeah. kristin dahl again, thank you. to arizona where republican presidential hopeful donald trump drew massive crowds and no shortage of protests saturday as he ramped up his harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration. nbc's katie kur was there. >> donald trump pulling no punches in arizona saturday. >> i had an idea. i think it's good. every time mexico really intelligently sends people over we charge mexico $100,000 for every person they send over. >> and neither did the crowd clashing with protesters inside
