this is nbc 10 news first alert weather. >> it is a first alert weather day because of this. we are tracking severe storms sweeping across the area right now, heavy downpours and lightning moving toward philadelphia. a live look outside now over the city. and we do expect those storms to be moving in soon. it could be a wet commute this morning and there could be even more problems throughout the day. we'll tell you what it means for your neighborhood. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today on this wednesday, i'm chris cato. as you saw there, it is a first alert weather day because of the strong storms moving across from the west right now. here's meteorologist bill henley with a look at where that action is. bill? >> chris, it's fast-moving rainfall heavy rainfall. now strong gusty winds. it's a lien of showers that

extends from the pocono mountains to the lehigh valley. some of the heaviest weather is entering our immediate philadelphia area from eastern berks county, chester county and into montgomery county. there's heavy rainfall and a lot of lightning with this storm. the greatest threat right now is from damaging winds. this is the area of severe weather, the severe thunderstorm warning. the storms are moving to the northeast at 25 miles an hour puts they will at norristown at 14 minutes past the hour and upper darby closer to 4:30. the storms will bring heavy rainfall and gusts, potentially in excess of 60 miles an hour damaging winds bringing down trees and power lines. the warned area extends into montgomery county south philadelphia and virtually all of delaware county and southern and western delaware county are seeing the heaviest rainfall as well as eastern chester county. but it extends also into upper montgomery county and the pottstown area very heavy

rainfall and there's plenty of lightning there. this is one of the reasons we've issued a first alert for today. the potential for downpours will continue not ownly this morning but into this afternoon. it could lead to localized flooding and the immediate threat of heavy thunderstorm winds, strong gusty winds and more this afternoon. so a stormy day ahead, 74 degrees at 6:00, the temperatures still held back at 9:00 in the 70s and stormy weather as we head into the noontime hour especially stormy for the start, the start of the morning commute. jessica boyington is watching first alert traffic. what's going on out there jessica? >> we are quiet in terms of volume. we have not seen rain hit all parts yet. you can see on 295 out in new jersey around the black horse pike, a 13-minute drive time. rain not falling on this scene. although on the way in from new jersey myself i did see lightning in the distance.

we have the ongoing construction on either side, north and southbound. in cherry hill new jersey ongoing construction on route 70 westbound. only one lane is geing by. the 42 freeway is looking okay. five minutes. northbound toward the walt whitman bridge, rain is falling in the distance. just something to watch out for. we saw the walt whitman bridge, the tacony palmyra and bristol are clear. we have two lanes blocked due to ongoing construction heading westbound into philadelphia on the ben. chris? on to a story about an innocent victim here. an elderly woman sitting on her front porch when she was hit by a bullet. this morning she's in a philadelphia hospital after being hit by that shot. the police say was a stray bullet. matt delucia live outside einstein medical center. >> that 79-year-old woman is stable here at einstein.

police tell us she was an innocent victim, sitting on her porch when the bullets came flying. this happened just after 10:30 last night. the woman was shot once in the right leg while sitting on the porch with her son. police say there were at least two shots fired, that they know of at this point. by woman, that is the big question at this hour. detectives have been looking for cameras in the area and talking with witnesses. the victim was conscious and talking as well. that's the good news. right now, this is all believed to be stray bullets, hitting that 79-year-old woman and they do believe that this woman was not the intended target. right now detectives are still trying to work on a description of this shooter. they don't know who he or she is or which direction this person went after the shots were fired. live at einstein medical center matt delucia, nbc 10 news. a philadelphia police

officer who was shot last year is now accused of trying to pin the shooting on his wife. police arrested officer robert penn yesterday on charges of making false reports and conspiracy. last march he was shot in the back at his home in overbrook. authorities now say he paid his ex-brother-in-law to tell the media that his wife pulled the trigger. his wife is a lieutenant with the philadelphia police department. >> i can't see her doing something like that. like i said she's a very nice person. she's been here a while. >> she's liked by neighbors? >> everybody likes her. >> now, a month after that shooting, penn's wife was assaulted outside her home. both the assault and the shooting remain unsolved. the police commissioner suspended officer penn with the intent to dismiss. 4:05. happening today, a judge in chester county will hold a pretrial hearing in the case of two school officials. como and james donato are

charged with violating state ethic rules by texting racist and sexist messages with their district cell phones. we call this one skirting the law. this woman was caught on camera using her roomy skirt to steal hundreds of dollars worth of liquor from astore in burlington county. police say her entire family kids included helped her pull it off. notice the man here handing her the bottle from the top shelf. this video was recorded on high street in burlington. there were two teens and two younger kids with the man and woman. the children distracted the employees by asking them questions while the man and woman went on a shopping spree. >> in the liquor business you make only dollar a bottle. once you have $300 gone you have to make 300 transactions to cover that cost. >> the store owner is hoping

someone will recognize the woman in that video and call police. happening today, the naacp national convention in philadelphia will wrap up today with a speech from former president bill clinton. the organization says he will talk about civil rights challenges facing the nation now. yesterday, the convention of course heard from president obama. he focused on criminal justice reform and talked about recent racially charged incidents across the country. >> we should not be tolerating gang activity in prison. we should not be tolerating rape in prison and we shouldn't be making jokes about it in our popular culture. that's no joke. these things are unacceptable. >> and some delegates told us they're encouraged after the president said there is bipartisan support for many of the reforms he's looking for.

4:07 now. new information in the bill cosby scandal. the smithsonian museum of african-american art will post a sign telling visitors the collection is about the artist and is not meant as a tribute to cosby. more than two dozen women have accused cosby of sexual misconduct. with the influx of more than 1 million people to this area for the world meeting of families in september, one organization is worried that they won't be able to carry out their mission of helping people in their time of need. nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us in university city this morning with that potential problem. what are we talking about here? >> chris, this group is called host for hospitals and basically people open up their home and volunteer space in their home so that those who are here in philadelphia seeking medical treatment and who may not be staying at a hospital don't it the ned to pay to stay at a hotel. one long-time host family we met

yesterday, they live in media, they'll often have guests with high-risk pregnancies who need to visit children's hospital of philadelphia once a week but live too far to commute. they're concerned with so many people filling their homes with people here to see the pope in september, they won't have room for the people that come to host for hospitals. host for hospitals are looking for 50 new families to host people during september when the world meeting of families taking place. board members told me they are shocked with the response. i'm working on that story, coming up at 5:00. reporting live in university city katy zachry nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> tracking severe weather on our first alert weather day. heavy downpours, lots of

lightning. that's a live view from the comcast center. the lightning is lighting up the sky with the rain moving into the area. you can see the lightning in the distance. going to be a light show this morning. the biggest threat right now is from damaging winds as those storms quickly move into the area. we're tracking it on the first alert radar. it is a line of storms extending from allentown through berks county into montgomery chester and some of the heaviest weather right now into delaware county and quickly moving towards philadelphia and montgomery county. it's clearing new castle county in delaware. look at the heavy rainfall now in western delaware county. heavy rainfall is just getting ready to exit the westchester area and euclid township. these storms are heading to the northeast at 25 miles an hour. it's not going to take much time at all to reach westchester.

i've taken the lightning off of this. you can see the heavy rainfall that's a few seconds away from media and chester and quickly on its way to upper darby. it's about to intensify in radnor, too. lots of lightning. this area here this large area that's the warned area for severe thunderstorm gusts of more than 60 miles an hour damaging winds, possibly bringing down trees. definitely want to wait that out, even heavier rainfall is moving into upper montgomery county. it's just clearing pottstown, still seeing downpours, east pikeland as well. this line of heavy rainfall is moving into the limerick area. it won't be long before it's in lower frederick and heading off in the north and east. then it's into bucks county this morning. this rain is moving quickly.

flooding is less likely with a fast-moving storm but there could be localized flooding with this fast-moving complex of storms. your hour by hour forecast shows it tens at 6:00 to threat. in fact, continues into delaware and south jersey. look at the rain extending into the allentown area. we may see heavy downpours scattered around at the 7:00 hour, as we go into the morning, more widespread rain follows the heavier storms potentially taking a break. the threat of storms and wet weather will stay with us into the afternoon. we could see heavy downpours later today. we'll keep an eye on this heavy rainfall as it moves through the area. this is why we issued a first alert for today. chris? >> obviously watching its effect on travel, too, bill. people are heading out, may be a good time to wait this one out. let's check in on traffic with jessica boyington. >> we're starting to see rain out in montgomery county.

certain parts of our cameras are showing water on the lenses. there's no light shining up on the camera so you can actually see it. there with hee go. eastbound is where we typically see the volume in the morning. rain is falling throughout the area. we can see that. eastbound from 29 up towards the schuylkill expressway, still an eight-minute trip though. out in montgomery county, also watching for an accident on main street and old sumneytown pike. the pa turnpike you won't see rain falling around the radar right now. it's through the work zones that are clearing right now. all cars moving along, a 22-minute trip from route 1 up towards valley forge. a landmark deal is in place that would prevent iran from developing a nuclear weapon. but president obama may still have to use his veto power. we'll explain. we'll tell you what the president is doing to drum up support for that agreement.

tracking severe storms moving in from the west as we take a live look over philadelphia from one of our cameras atop the comcasten isser it. heavy rain right now over the westchester, media area, headed towards norristown. meteorologist bill henley is tracking it all. intense rain coming with this. bill will be back in a moment with a look at exactly where it is. it's quite a light show from mother nature right now. today president obama will continue to make his case for the historic nuclear deal with iran that was brokered over the past 48 hours. president obama says the agreement is not built on trust but on verification by inspections. according to the agreement, iran will not produce enough material for anatomic weapon for at least ten years. in exchange sanctions against iran will be lifted. mr. obama says iran does not have the power to develop a nuclear bomb now but others are

leery. >> i'm going to read this agreement closely and with a fairly skeptical eye. i deeply distrust the iranian regime. >> this is a bad mistake of historic proportions. iran look at this they were holding up "v" for victory signs there. the celebration lasted throughout much of the night. crowds waved iranian flags, held photos of the foreign minister sharif. many hope this will help the country's struggling economy. >> it shows diplomacy has a much better chance of achieving results than coercion and pressure. >> congress has 60 days to review the agreement before

voting. if congress should reject it president obama says he will use his veto power to overturn it. the colorado movie theater shooting trial is in its final stages now. closing arguments are over and jury deliberation begins today. prosecutors are trying to prove that james holmes was sane when he opened fire in a movie theater in 2012, killing 12 and injuring hundreds of others. defense attorneys admit holmes was the shooter but they say he was mentally ill at the time. the trial has gone on for more than 11 weeks now. more than 250 witnesses testified. if convicted, holmes could be sentenced to death. today is the last day families can visit f.a.o. schwarz on fifth avenue. almost 30 years. officials say they will re-open in another spot but nothing has been announced at this point. of course fao has been featured in several movies.

most notably the scene from "big." . take a look at this video out of new york. it shows a building just collapsing. we'll get another look at that in a moment. three people were walking by an empty building at the time when the building collapsed. those people were injured. the building was being preparing for demolition. no one was inside and no word yet on what caused the collapse. check out this video here. a small plane landing in the middle of route 72 in stafford township, ocean county on sunday. we'll show you again, right there. sitting down in the median. you can see from the traffic camera. gliding right in there for a landing on the grassy median. here's the scene where the plane stopped rolling, right there, shot by a motorist. investigators are looking into what caused the aircraft to lose power. three skydiving students and an instructor were on board.

no one was seriously injured. well from the outer reaches of the solar system another joint leap for mankind. nasa says its mission to fly by pluto was a big success. this is the first close-up image of icy pluto now classified as a dwarf planet. the team tracking the probe for 9 1/2 years and 3 billion miles couldn't be happier. >> telemetry with the spacecraft. >> it did exactly what it was supposed to do. >> it's amazing. >> it is crazy when you think about they sent that probe, launched it almost ten years ago and now it's completing a mission. the spacecraft is expected to beam photos and data back to earth for the next 15 years. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley.

>> a stormy morning. we're tracking showers and thunderstorms that are getting ready to move into philadelphia. it's really not that far away. it's heavy rainfall as well as strong, gusty wind. look at the line of showers and the lightning show through southeastern pennsylvania. a tremendous amount of lightning along with strong gusty winds which is why this area is under a severe thunderstorm warning. it's winds, potentially in excess of 60 miles an hour. those are damaging winds to bring down traez and power lines this morning. the greatest chance of seeing the damaging winds is moving into the marple area. you can see the first rain drops are just inching into south philadelphia. very heavy rainfall it's falling at a rate of more than 2 inches per hour. but those storms are on the move. so you'll see a brief period of heavy rainfall and then it's

going to taper off. but as that line moves through, could see damaging winds. less likely the damaging winds for limerick where it's getting heavy rain moving through upper providence and it's about to taper off. you can see towamencin. wait a few minutes before you hit the road let this line pass through not only douglas and into bucks county it's moving through eastern berks county right now. that same line is also affecting the lehigh valley. very heavy rainfall not only to start the day but it's potential through the day. not expecting an all-day this line will push through and then we'll see scattered lighter showers. you can see west vincent is getting lighter showers. that line the leading edge will be in norristown right about now and heading to lower marion at 4:30 this morning as they move off to the northeast at 25 miles an hour.

there are a few scattered showers in new castle county. much lighter rainfall there. that extends into salem county new jersey. this first line of showers appears to stay clear of most of new jersey but it's going to be hugging i-95. you can see it's affecting montgomery county right now. it's not going to be very long before it moves into bucks county this morning. the rain is still coming down but it's not nearly as heavy, just to the west. and the potential for more storms during the day. won't be an all-day rainfall but the threat of showers and thunderstorms will be with us through the day. that will keep temperatures lower. upper 70s and low 80s this afternoon, doylestown trenton and mt. holly. a stormy start for doylestown and trenton. we'll see scattered showers and possibility of more thunderstorms this afternoon. there's a possibility of showers and thunderstorms during the day, vineland and dover into the low 80s this afternoon. he's a stormy morning right now for westchester, drexel hill and

those storms are moving into philadelphia. won't be an all-day rainfall but the threat will be with us into this afternoon. but there are big changes ahead. it's a first alert day today but i've got a look at the seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. >> thanks for that. it is prime day for online shoppers. amazon is promising that this will be bigger than black friday. we'll see about that. we'll tell you what you need to do to take part in those deals.
