>> our top story, a major interstate in southern california closed after part of the roadway washed away. we have latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. a wild weekend for weather extremes after a kriping drought. the area is seeing historic rainfall that brought flash flooding washing away bridges and cars and damaging homes. a much neededed heavy rain across southern california turned dangerous on sunday. >> bridge collapsed. >> reporter: at least one driver was trapped after the downpour caused a 30-foot section of the freeway to collapse east of palm springs. oh fishes have shut down part of the interstate until they can fully assess the damage. with winds near 60 miles an hour the thunderstorm dropped an estimated inch of rain every hour. the storm led to mud slides and flooded roadways with several cars getting stranded in orange county california. fire officials rescued are residents are from flooded homes

online database a surgeon scorecard could change the way you think about health care. >> reporter: for many patients the dreaded path to the operating room can be a high stakes guessing game. >> people will do more research shopping for a flat screen tv or toothpaste in america than they will looking for a doctor that's going to perform one of the most important operations of their life. >> with a do you think? >> reporter: new yorker george lynch wishes he had a better option. complications tr knee surgery left him barely able to walk. >> if there were more research available or more data available for me to sit down and say, the person who is going to do my surgery has the lowest batting average or the highest complication rate that kind of information wasn't available. >> reporter: until now. the nonprofit news outlet pro publica has a first of its kind database using five years of medicare records for lower risk

elective procedures such as knee replacement, neck fusions and gallbladderer surgery. they are calling it a surgeon scorecardment you can type in the name of a doctor to see how many complications they have had and how they compare to other is surgeons nearby. >> even the doctors didn't know. what's interesting is going around the country, the talking to doctors about what we found. one of the first questions is what's my complication rate from 2009 to 2013 they found 66,000 complications led to rehospitalizations and that cost taxpayers $645 million. the analysis shows some doctors had complications in over 1 in 10 surge aries, but the average was between 2% and 4%. the lowest rates weren't necessarily at big name hospitals. dr. joiner of florence, alabama, had zero complications during that period. he credits a commitment to having a second sur squon in the

this is terrific. >> i'm excited about this show because again, i get to help people. nine families in atlanta, i get to the teach you this is what i do. you watch the show, i surprise the hell out of them. >> i've done this for years, about 35 properties, i love to do it. it's one of my favorite things. >> it is one of her favorite things. we're hiring often just contractors. we're not 100% sure on price, but how will you know if you're getting a fair shake? >> i call it the three syndrome. you call in three people, get three different prices, you automatically think the middle price is the right price. it has nothing to do with the price. it has everything to do with what's in the quote, what material, what are you doing on the job? and once it's itemized 100%, that price, that quote is the one you should be looking at. >> and the reputation of the contractor. >> you check them out. >> you have to. >> i mean, again three, they usually give you three references. >> do you put incentives in to have it done on budget by time?

>> always. always. >> because it seems like they're always late. >> the trouble these days is getting other suppliers to get things to you when they're supposed to. >> well, if he's really good -- he or she, i've made some good female general contracts -- they'll run it like a time clock. >> it's a military operation. >> let's see how we can help people out. first is a ranch house. >> this is in desperate need. >> what did you do to this guy? >> we completely enseparated this from top to bottom in less than five days. i had all the contestants, i'm teaching them dry wall, tiling, you name it. they have to do design. so we split them up. >> so you got rid of the fence which is important. what did you snick there? >> picket fence. >> everybody wants a picket fence. >> in five days. but i had 24 hours a day, over a hundred guys working on it. >> can we put them side by side? >> is the wood the best way to go, do you think? >> when it comes to a fence you have to understand a lot of

things. a wood fence is a simple fence, easy to put up. the curb appeal is everything. changing the roof line. i mean, it looks like a bad hairpiece. once you balance it out -- >> i thought it was falling down. that's actually the line of the roof? >> yes. open it up put in more windows bigger doors. >> how much did this cost? >> this one here probably -- it's worth about $200,000 now. we probably did $100,000 worth of renovations. >> next house this needs some siding obviously. >> and some other things. >> yes, i called this one the contractor runaway job. they bought the house and tried to fix it up and left and we came in and totally redid. >> it show us the after. we saw that. gee, that's interesting. you only know how to do one kind of house. >> let's see if i can get you the after. >> there you go! >> one thing i like about this is the metal roof. a lot of people don't understand, it's old technology and we should be putting up a

metal roof on our home to protect it. once again, landscaping. on the side we added what appears to be an old barn. it's brand new. >> that's adorable. >> that's cute. >> and was that -- is that the garage? or a little shed? >> it's a -- you could call it a party room, entertainment room. >> that's so cute. i love it. love it. and real quick, can we put side by side the last one? we wanted to look at the last house? >> you want to see the last one? yes, please. >> look at you, you're doing everything. >> there's the before and after. now this one here really nice. big changes on this one. you can see just the curb appeal again. we had a lot of water issues on the front of the property so we took advantages. you can see the streamline. we went through the driveway to take it off. and then dress this up. remember, all these houses go to a deserving family every five days i give away the house. >> that's the best part of it. >> thank you so much. we appreciate it.
