theater in louisiana. we are learning more about the gunman. nbc's kerry sanders in lafayette this morning. >> reporter: erica, it remains a mystery. a 59-year-old drifter buys a ticket and under the cover of darkness, he pulls a pistol and starts firing. he shoots 13 times. among the questions that people are asking did anybody know the gunman who was capable of such horror. at a candlelight vigil in lafayette, prayers for the victims, and questions. did the system designed to stop a crazed gunman break down? 59-year-old john russell houser was no stranger to police. in the bar he once owned, the former mayor and houser's one time business partner said he

has problems. >> a good description is time bomb. >> reporter: several years ago, his wife filed for legal protection protection. houser displayed behavior that led to a brief involuntary hospitalization at that time. last year when he lost his home in foreclosure. deputies had to physically evict him. >> pillows all over the place. paint all over the walls. >> reporter: family members referenced the victims. ali called her big sister mayci a rock. and at the makeshift memorial to jillian johnson. >> this is our alarm clock. it's time for us to wake up. >> reporter: for some that leads to calls for stricter gun controls. >> you see the blood from the victims and bullet holes in the seats. >> reporter: louisiana governor and republican candidate for

president bobby jindal. >> this should never have happened here or anywhere. >> reporter: and you feel powerless because we see it over and over. what do you do? >> right now, the important thing is we shower these families with prayers and love. i this i right now, we are less we are 24 hours after this happened. the most important thing is to let the families know we care for them. >> reporter: in the chaos, there was bravery. >> some victims screaming. >> reporter: the supervise are paramedic who rushed into the scene. then the school teacher. >> beyond the life-saving role you played what about the teacher? >> that is extraordinary. >> reporter: extraordinary because by pulling that fire alarm, all theaters emptyied here. the gunman escaped from a side door but cut off from cops so he went an back into the theater

and continued shooting before taking his life. the items recovered by investigators are journals which may explain why this gunman's madness was brought here to the theater in lafayette, louisiana. erica. >> kerry sanders for us. thank you. guns involved on friday on the busy sheinelle. >> this started on ventura boulevard and ending with police shooting and killing the suspect. it was chaos in the late afternoon. shoppers in studio city not sure if they should take cover or run to safety. >> everybody said banks are locked down. >> reporter: witnesses had a clear view of the man. >> he was sitting on the front wall of the bank. looked calm. >> reporter: a helicopter above as police shouted orders. >> the officer gets out with the shotgun raised.

>> reporter: some bystanders say the man fired his weapon. confused shoppers were still on the streets as police began firing. the gunman was killed but the bomb squad had to clear the scene because police were concerned he made have been armed with explosives. police say they don't think the man had anything explosive. no one else was injured. ventura boulevard was closed as the investigation went on. carson. >> sheinelle, thank you. president obama spoke out recently about the gun culture in america and his frustration over unable to pass stricter laws. >> if you look at the number of americans killed since 9/11 by terrorism, it is less than 100. if you look at the number that have been killed by gun violence it's in the tens of thousands. >> nbc's senior white house correspondent chris jansing is in kenya traveling with the president. chris, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, erica. president obama says no other issue he has faced as president has left him as frustrated as trying to make some progress on what he calls common sense gun safety laws. it was against the back drop of the shooting in louisiana that he came here to kenya to face some other vexing problems, including a big push for the economy. already this morning, he was at the global entrepreneur summit and brought along american success stories including the founders of aol and airbnb. this was also a return to his father's homeland. >> obviously, this is personal for me. there's a reason why my name's barack hussain obama. my father came from these parts. i have family and relatives here. in my visits over the years, walking the streets of nairobi, i came to know the warmth and

spirit of the kenyan people. >> reporter: last night, the president had a reunion dinner with three dozen relatives, including his half sister and step grandmother. a recent poll shows 80% of kenyans trust the president to do the right thing for them. he is hoping that will work in his favor because his relationship with government officials here has not always been as warm as it is with the kenyan people. erica. >> chris nairobi, thank you. we will check in with you more on the president's trip. and meantime the attention of the political world on iowa today. presidential candidate donald trump will be there as well as hillary clinton. this as she faces new questions about her use of a personal e-mail account while secretary of state. kristen welker is here. >> nice to see you in studio carson. hillary clinton has been dogged by the e-mail issues. now the concerns over her

private account could have contained hundreds of classified e-mails. campaigning in iowa later today, hillary clinton will try to turn a page away from the mounting questions of the use of the private e-mail account as secretary of state. on friday clinton defended herself in new york. >> i have released 55,000 pages of e-mails. we are all accountable to the american people to get the facts right. and i will do my part. >> reporter: this after two inspectors general asked the justice department to investigate whether ianyone mishandled information relating to her e-mail. one noting that four were classified but they were given that notation after they were sent. >> when things are not originally classified are reviewed. >> reporter: clinton has consistently denied any

wrongdoing. >> i'm well aware of the classification requirements and did not send classified material. >> reporter: on friday her campaign said in a statement, any released e-mails deemed classified by the administration had been done so after the fact and not at the time they were transmitted. legal issues aside, the ongoing questions about e-mail have been a political problem for republicans. on friday some republican presidential candidates took to twitter urging the justice department to investigate. and the flack has brought eroding trust to her. according to a poll in iowa 59% say hillary clinton is not trust worthy. if you look at the national polls, hillary clinton is the strong front runner. justice department officials have given no timeline for making a decision. this is an issue she is having a tough i'm shaking. >> you will be on it in iowa? >> that's right.

i have a plane to catch in a few hours. >> it was nice to see you. it was brief, but nice. >> kristen, i appreciate it. sheinelle has more details of the death of a woman after a traffic stop in texas. >> friends and family of sandra bland are pay be final respects after the autopsy of her death in a texas jail cell. we have nbc's john yang with more. good morning john. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. the funeral comes one day after the release of the autopsy report that ruled bland committed suicide. the family conducted a separate autopsy of their own. we don't know the results of that. the official report we got on friday does not talk about the marijuana that prosecutors say was in bland's system. we expect to get that toxicology report next week. the family says that is

irrelevant. that is merely an attempt by investigators by prosecutors to smear bland's character. now for more than a week now, bland's case has been taken up by many people for many reasons. today, here at this church the only reason for the gathering is the family and friends saying good-bye to a friend and daughter and sister and aunt. thank you. fans of "deadliest catch" are stunned at the shooting death of a crew member. the associate producer was found on the streets in east pasadena suffering from gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. several hours later, a 24-year-old suspect in the shooting was also found dead of self inflicted wounds. investigators say the two knew each other, but released no other details about the shooting. in hot springs, arkansas police looking into the death of a 2-year-old found in the sweltering car. the child's father drove to a neighbor's house to get help

after realizing what happened. >> he driven home. left the baby in the car. forgot the baby was in the car. about four hours. >> emergency crews responded to the scene, but were not able to revive the child. there is a new view of the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and hundreds of just released photos. then president george w. bush and vice president dick cheney can be seen in discussions with national security. in several frames, you can see the world trade center in flames. the operations center pictures were taken by the staff photographer and made public through a freedom of information request. presidential hopeful donald trump is taking a tough stand in iowa with the paper. he is banning "the des moines register" from the event today. the newspaper called on trump to pull out of the race.

breast cancer but instead looked at those women who smoke that have breast cancer are three times more likely to die than those who don't. >> it looked at the length of time in the women that smoked. the longer you smoke, the greater the impact? >> yes. in this group, if you smoke for more than two decades, you are at risk of dying from the disease. >> was this woman in the study still currently smoking or if you smoked for 20 years and quit and got breast cancer does this affect your survival rate? >> that's a good question. in this study, it is women still currently smoking. this reaffirms there is no time that's too late to quit smoking. it is encourageing for anybody to quit smoking. >> the study that is surprising to me. we are seeing overall smoking rates in the country decline which is good for our health.

a separate piece for women 18 and 25 which are very light smokers. that is five or fewer cigarettes a day which seems kind of high. >> i think this is the social smoking phenomenon. not even smoking every day, but occasionally. these women were at very high risk. i think we have seen particularly in the news over the past several years that alcohol in moderation one drink a day or less is not necessarily bad for your health and may be protective against heart disease. for smoking, this reaffirms that no amount is safe. >> any smoking, especially for women, as we know now, can have this effect. if you consider yourself this light smoker that can affect you with breast cancer later on. >> exactly. what is dangerous about the light smoking, when they see their doctors, they may not seem to be smokers. when you are asked the question do you smoke, they may answer

memorial cookout from noon until 6:00 p.m. in honor of the victims. two men are charged with the carjacking and murders of the family members. they are cornelius crawford and jonathan rosa. both are still awaiting trial. happening today, demolition crew wills begin taking down a fixture of the camden skyline. the commerce building was a beacon of progress when it opened in 1965. crews are now clearing it to make way for a parking lot. the demolition should take about two weeks. traffic will be rerouted around the area. and part of lincoln drive in philadelphia is closed today for repair and maintenance. you cannot drive, walk, or bike. we're back in 25 minutes. i'm ted greenberg. more of the "today" show coming your way next. have a great weekend.

explain his madness. they found inside that motel, wigs and other items that may have been planned to be used as a disguise. meantime houser is no stranger to law enforcement. in his home state in alabama, there are records that indicate he had problems over the years, including his estranged wife who requested protection. she said she needed protection because of her husband's extreme erratic behavior. an example of that may be in the flags. nazi flag flown over the bar that houser once owned. as all of the attention is focused on trying to figure out why, there is also a lot of praise for one of the theater goers here. a school teacher, in the chaos, had the wherewithal to pull the fire alarm. the experts and first responders

say that one decision saved countless lives. sheinelle. >> thank you, kerry. as hillary clinton heads to the iowa campaign event, questions about e-mails go along with her. the inspector general for the intelligence committee says four of the e-mails from the private server have been determined classified. the clinton campaign says those may have become later after the e-mails were sent. and president obama is at an economic summit in kenya. nbc's chris jansing is traveling with the president. good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. the message from president obama is africa is on the move. he cohosted a global summit. he took a tour of programs that are designed to get more electricity to various parts of kenya, but he also talked about the importance of technology in moving new ideas forward. he got a laugh when he said he can't quite text as fast as his

chrysler is taking more cars off the road for a new fix in the internet age. recalling 1.4 million cars to make sure they are secure from hacking. this follows the demonstration by the pros who hacked into the controls of a jeep. investigators in rhode island determined cause of the blast that injured one woman and sent police on inspections on beach fronts. the culprit was a corroded copper cable under the sand. we go under water for a discovery in lake michigan. divers identified a shipwreck that is 116 years old. the steam ship called "the john v. morgan" disappeared in 1899 during the voyage from milwaukee to muskegon. it was discovered upright and almost entirely in tact. >> they were really shocked it was in tact.

injuries. in florida, nbc's kerry sanders has more. >> reporter: 28-year-old bobby served in afghanistan. a green beret. >> i was driving a dirt bike and went over a pressure plate ied. it took off almost my whole leg. most of my hand. crushed my pelvis. >> reporter: he had more than 30 surgeries in three years. >> there have been times if i questioned if it would have been easier if i died that day. going from the pinnacle of the green beret to physically disabled and use a cane and wheelchair. >> reporter: today, he's married and the father of 9-month-old wyatt. on this day, bobby is joining other wounded vets in the florida keys for a special under water mission. >> when someone calls you on the phone and we have this important thing. we want you to come and join in. it's a real morale booster.

>> reporter: enter biologists from the marine laboratory to help replenish the coral reeves. the job or mission as it were for the vets, with tools, take coral grown in the lab and plant it on the ocean floor. so 35 feet down near the key, bobby and his fellow wounded vet began rebuilding the reef. >> i think this is another mission they can get excited about and feel good about giving back to the environment. >> reporter: in the last two years, wounded vets helped plant more than 1,000 corals here. a protective haven for fish. >> you get into it and there is a feeling of importance. there is something better than me trying to swim with only one leg and hand. >> reporter: is that something that has been missing in your life for a while? >> at times. when i get things to do this and
