promise you. that's all for today. if it's sunday, it's "meet the press." nbc 10 breaking news. forced out of their homes, residents of this high-rise apartment building were evacuated because of a fire. we'll take you live there to the scene in pennsauken. monday morning soaker. you can see rainy conditions that our crews found as heavy downpours pass through the area there. just take a look at where that's coming from here on nbc 10 first alert radar. the rain will be with us for the time being it looks like. then more showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for later today. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. weather that matches a monday morning perhaps. i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. still a good amount of rain out

there, right? >> some areas getting heavy rainfall. this line of showers is moving through the area including center city. that's a live view looking at center city this morning from the loews hotel camera. look at the storms. right now raging through delaware. they just cleared middleton. rainfall is extending into salem and cumberland counties and thunderstorms into camden and burlington county just south of esham. it's not going to be an all-day rainfall. we'll see showers and thunderstorms to start with. 6:00 still tracking some storms in the area 73 degrees and then we'll see a chance of scattered showers and possibly thunderstorms at 9:00 and at noon. that's going to hold our temperatures back today. we'll be in the 80s this afternoon. we'll go through the futurecast hour by hour to show you when the storms are most likely to pop up in your neighborhood. that's when i'm back in ten

minutes. let's see how this is affecting the roads. jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> we don't have backups as of yet. we are dealing with wet roadways and slippery conditions. moderate flooding in some spots as well. we're looking live at i-95 around the vine street expressway. you can see the drive time here still a 14-minute trip whether you're headed northbound or southbound. still from woodhaven road to this point at the vine street expressway about a 14-minute trip. no real problem there. if you're headed out the door on to 422, it is active right at this moment. headed eastbound from 29 up towards the schuylkill expressway. currently no problems or delay for mass transit, new jersey transit, septa and patco doing fine so far. let's get back to that breaking news out of camden county. a fire at a high raise apartment building. people are out of their homes and a firefighter had to have medical help. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in

pennsauken. katy, take us through what happened there. yes, chris in this rain we're experiencing is not helping for the people who have been displaced. the pennsauken fire chief tells me that fire broke out just before midnight out inside the cooper river plaza apartments. we're focusing in on the first floor where you can see windows were broken during the firefighting effort. if we take you around this side of this fire truck right here you can see a number of people are standing underneath the overhang. many of those people are waiting to get back into their apartments about 350 people had to be evacuated during the firefighting effort. when firefighters arrived they did find fire on the first floor in a dmon area. they evacuated everyone from inside the building. some people i'm toll had a difficult time getting downstairs because they're disabled. they had to be helped by firefighters and emts. the fire was put out rather quickly. smoke did filter throughout the building. firefighters are right now in

the process of checking each floor for carbon monoxide before letting people back in. just before we went on live i heard from their loud speaker that they're letting everyone from the third floor back in. there are 14th floors. everyone from the 14th floor to the 3rd floor has been let back in. you see behind me under the overhang a few people still waiting to get back inside. we about the firefighter who was taking to a local hospital. i'm told he's suffering from exhaustion. coming up in the next hour you'll hear people's stories from the evacuation. 4:04. new information on six people who were feared missing on delaware river. they're all safe and sounded this morning. just after midnight search crews from pennsylvania and new jersey found the group of tubers near this bridge in frenchtown huntington county. search started when people called 911 worried because they

hadn't heard from the tubers. the six were never in any trouble, they just hadn't told anyone how long they'd be out on the river. police in philadelphia are still looking for the drive are in a deadly hit and run there juniata park. around 10:00, a car smashed into another car on east luzerne street and took off. the impact killed the driver of the car that was hit. a passenger was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. police have found the car that left the scene but not the driver. the ex-son-in-law of former pennsylvania governor tom corbett. prosecutors say money was planted as part of an internal affairs investigation. a judge declare a mistrial in the case last october. bobbi kristina the daughter

of late music legend whitney houston and singer bobby brown died yesterday at the age of 22. six months ago she was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub at her atlanta area home. she underwent treatment at two hospital and a rehab facility but never regained consciousness. doctors listed heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors in her death. >> it is bizarre that the same type of incident would happen involving a mother and a daughter. >> three years ago, whitney houston drown in a bathtub in a beverly hills hotel. police have investigated the circumstances of bobbi kristina's death but have not yet revealed their results. something to pass along here that could be of importance to you in berks county this morning, two phone companies are working to fix a 911 problem in berks county. the county's department of emergency services says sprint wireless customers are hearing a squealing noise when they call 911. the dispatchers are hearing that

same noise which makes communication impossible. both sprint and verizon are working to fix the problem. we'll keep you posted. a robbery victim found beaten and bloody just moments after three teens attacked him. it happened early friday morning. police say the teens beat a 61-year-old man and stole his watch. james cooper had stopped at that gas station to grab a snack. he says he saw the three teens running away leaving the man on the ground his face badly swollen and bleeding. he immediately started recording video with his cell phone. >> i seen him stretched out on the ground. i said let me help this guy out. hold on. let me get you some help man. looked like he got beat bad. i wish i could have got there earlier to help him out. >> not only did he call police for him, he visited the victim in the hospital yesterday and he tells us that the man is doing much better.

he says the guy didn't have any family in this area. police are still looking for the teens. 4:08 now, pennsylvania's governor tom wolf will be in willow grove, montgomery county today to promote schools and push his budge oat plan. he'll visit willow hill elementary as part of his ongoing schools that teach tour. he'll talk about his plan to increase funding for the education. he's proposed a tax on natural gas industry to fund schools. jack markell will welcome young scientists and engineers to a conference at the university of delaware. that conference focuses on the state's coastal environment. they will exchange ideas on projects and research to protect the coastline. in bethlehem, northampton county, township commissioners want to fight flash flooding by taxing property owners. this move follows last month's storm which is cost the township $250,000. the proposed tax would run

between $25 to $150 a year and would be used to fund storm water drainage projects. township officials meet next week to discuss that proposal. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 4:09. showers and thunderstorms, we'll be tracking them to start with. there's a good chance we'll see more storms during the day today. with heavy downpours you could see localized flooding a flood watch in effect for much of the airy -- flood advisory in effect for much of the area. the downpours will help keep our temperatures down today but that changes tomorrow. a heat wave is coming. and the 90s return tomorrow afternoon. right now, 65 rain in the pocono mow tans. northeast philadelphia is reporting light rain. 75 in atlantic city. not much wind with this rain except around thunderstorms. we have seen some thunderstorms and are still tracking them in delaware and south jersey. that's where the heaviest

rainfall has started to taper off for philadelphia and suburbs but the heavy rain pushing to the south and east. you could see it in central and new castle central delaware and new castle county as well as salem and cumberland counties. it's a line of showers that extends into new jersey as well. the heavier showers just south of bear, delaware. winslow, the heavier downpours on the way. this first line won't be the last for the day today. futurecast shows at 9:00 this morning, storms once again popping up in south jersey. and in areas closer in to the delaware river, you can see camden and salem counties getting heavier downpours as we go into the afternoon hours, that's 2:00 this afternoon. showers will keep our temperatures lower and then be clearing out this evening. take a look at how much rainfall is already on the ground when i come back in ten minutes. watching that rain move

through on her network of traffic cameras is nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. making things slippery out there this morning. >> we're dealing with slippery conditions. the schuylkill expressway specifically having a lot of wet areas that you might want to slow down when you drive through, actually. on the eastbound side we're still dealing with a 14-minute drive time. from the blue route to the vine street expressway. the roadways are wet. headed westbound towards the king of prushsia area. actively rain falling on the pa turnpike. turnpike. westbound or eastbound about a 23-minute trip there. towamencin towamencin, watch out for this accident. also happening today, another traffic alert for drivers that you'll want to be aware of. it will be in center city for at

least the next week. penndot is closing the spring garden street ramp to the schuylkill expressway westbound. crews will be working there from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the ramp will be closed until next tuesday as crews make repairs to the concrete. drivers will take a detour to the girard avenue ramp to get on the schuylkill. now to a disturbing discovery in a vacant lot. an nbc 10 viewer called us after finding this small box and what was inside is what was so disturbing. we'll tell you the mystery of how it got there, why it's far from solved. and an all-out search. the big name star using his fame and fortune to help find two missing teenage boaters.

ú residents of a high raise apartment building were evacuated overnight because of a fire. it started on the first floor and spread throughout the building the smoke did rather not the fire. some of the residents are being allowed to go back inside. firefighters say they have to check each of the 14 floors for carbon monoxide levels. not everyone is back in yet. nbc 10's katy zachry has spoken with many of those who escaped the fire. we'll hear from them and katy in 15 minutes. people had to evacuate the nearby apartment complexes after a warehouse fire in brunswick township. residents can return to their homes. officials again ordered them to leave when the fire broke out early last wednesday morning. investigators still have not determined the cause of that fire.

this morning, president obama is in ethiopia following a historic and personal visit to kenya where his late father was born. nbc 10's tracy davidson is live in our digital operations center this morning. tracy, bring us up to speed on the president's agenda. >> president obama arrived in ethiopia's capital last night, just the latest stop on a journey to africa that spans his family's history. this is new video of prsh atesident obama at a welcoming ceremony. he's the first u.s. president to visit ethiopia. this is the president as he arrived in addia adaba. the president spoke to crowds large and small. kenyans consider the president a local son. his father herded goats before

leaving for the u.s. to pursue an education. now as leader of the free world, the president urged kenya to eliminate corruption and discrimination against women. >> those are bad traditions. they need to change. they're holding you back. i'm here as a friend who wants kenya to succeed. >> crowds of kenyans chanted the president's name as he left for ethiopia. today the president is scheduled to hold talks with ethiopian officials and discuss the civil war in south sudan. live in the digital operations center tracy davidson nbc 10 news. 4:17 now. funeral services are happening today for a u.s. marine sergeant who was killed during that attack at a military center in tennessee earlier this month. sergeant thomas sullivan will be laid to rest one of five service members who were killed by a lone gunman later gunned down by authorities in chattanooga. following today's private

funeral, sullivan will be laid to rest with full military honors at the massachusetts memorial veterans cemetery. investigators say john houser illegally -- i'm sorry, legally bought that gun last year in alabama but in 2008 court records show his family had him involuntarily committed to a hospital in georgia. >> seemed to be an individual ranting and raving about things going on within the government things going on maybe around the world. >> obviously somebody with this history never should have been able to buy a gun. >> it's still not clear why houser's hospitalization never showed up in the federal data database when he bought that weapon. so far, there is no clear motive for why he did it. this morning, an nfl half of famer is offering big money to find two 14-year-old boys

missing in the atlantic ocean off the coast of florida. yesterday, the coast guard found the teen's boat capsized nearly 70 miles off the coast of jupiter, florida. the two were last seen on friday buying fuel before going fishing. the nation of one of the boys football great joe nameath is offering an award to find the teens. >> we keep on praying. it's so hard. we have to believe in their wherewithal. we have confidence in that area, no doubt. >> the u.s. coast guard is modifying its search based on the boat's location. 4:19 now. happening today, the boy scouts of america is expected to make history by lifting its ban on gay leaders. "the new york times" reports the scouts' executive board will ratify a resolution that ends the ban. the new polywould allow scouting

groups to select adult leaders, no matter their sexual orientation. some groups with religious ties would still be able to limit leadership jobs to heterosexuals. the james whitey bulger case goes back to court. the imprisoned gangster won't be there. his lawyers will ask a federal appeals court in boston to overturn his racketeering investigates arguing he did not get a fair trial. a jury found bulger guilty of participating in 11 murders in the 1970s and '80s. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> showers, thunderstorms, heavy rainfall moving through at 4:20 this morning. that will be the case to start with. it's not going to be an all-day rainfall. we'll see on and off storms as we go through the morning, it will be mostly cloudy. the temperatures will be held become. that's a clear view from center city. but it's certainly not clear weatherwise as the rain is coming down.

71 degrees. look at the humidity up there at 90%. heavy rain a steady lighter rain for philadelphia. they're still waiting for the rain at the jersey shore. cape may, beach avenue is dry at this hour. heavier rainfall inland in south jersey delaware and into maryland has prompted a flood advisory. that's until 6:15 this morning. look at the heavy rainfall. it's already on the ground in chester and new castle counties and farther to the north. some very heavy rainfall amounting to more than two inches in northern chester county topping 3 inches in portions of new castle county and closer to 4 inches farther to the north. there's been a real soaker this morning. but it will break and we will see breaks of sunshine. that will come with some warmer weather, too. 73 degrees at 6:00. by 9:00 77 degrees and at noontime, we'll be tracking more showers and thunderstorms, 81 degrees. but expect to see more breaks of sunshine during the afternoon.

a woman said she found a box of cremated remains saturday morning. the remains are those of a woman named linda upshore, died in 2007. neighbors we spoke with did not

recognize that name and they're wondering why someone would leave the box there in a vacant lot. >> why put it out like it's trash? that's not good. >> it is so unfortunate and very dis respectrespectful for someone to dispose of anybody's remains in such a poor manner. >> nbc 10 reached out to police who are investigating the discovery. if you recognize the name of that woman, linda upshore, call police. prices at the gas pump continue to fall some good news on this monday morning. aaa reports the national average is at $2.72 a gallon down 4 cents from last week. analysts predict an even bigger price cut in coming weeks. bring it on. here's a look at what drivers are paying now. the average in the five-county philadelphia area $2.83 a gallon. drivers in delaware expect to pay $2.60 and in south jersey the average is $2.45 a gallon. summer savings perhaps.
