the family of bobbi kristina brown announcing her death six months after she, just like her mother was found unresponsive in a bathtub. tamron has been following the story. so sad. >> heartbreaking. you can see the reaction from people on social media last night. bobbi kristina brown was rushed to the hospital on january 31 and never regained consciousness. the medical examiner is saying it will take time to determine the exact cause of death. this morning, friends, family and fans are mourning the loss of 22-year-old bobbi kristina brown, the only child of superstar whitney houston and r & b singer bobby brown. the family announcing she died on sunday releasing a statement saying in part she's finally at peace in the arms of god. brown's death comes nearly six months after she was found unresponsive at her home near atlanta. a friend discovered her face down and unresponsive in her bathtub january 31.

for months her family kept vigil as she was put on a ventilator, moved to a rehab facility and finally placed in hospice care. [ bobbi kristina rapping ] >> as the daughter of two stars her life was well documented in a reality show about her father. by age 14 her parents divorced. five years later houston was found dead in a bathtub at a beverly hills hotel. soon after, bobbi kristina spoke with oprah winfrey. >> does it seem real? >> sometimes, no. no. sometimes it's so surreal that you know i still walk in the house like "mom?" >> reporter: she married nick gordon. he was often seen as bobbi kristina's adopted brother. >> we are really very happy.

fiat-chrysler with the largest fine ever in the wake of a string of recalls. the company is being forced to buy back some cars that it admits are defective and potentially dangerous. tom costello has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's a $70 million fine. add in the potential fines and penalties and it could be $105 million. that's a record. this is what's unusual, as you mentioned. fiat-chrysler buying back half a million creekvehicles it's already recalled. the national highway traffic safety administration is imposing the fines and penalties because of what it calls the company's lax attitude in notifying customers of the recalls and fixing the cars that were recalled. the vehicles included in the buyback are the dodge suv and ram pickups built between 2008 and '12. the owners of a million jeep cherokees from the 1990s will be able to trade in their vehicles for above market value or

receive a financial incentive. fiat chrysler says we also accept the resulting consequences with renewed resolve to improve our handling of recalls and re-establish the trust our customers place in us. matt? >> what if you own one of the cars and we can put the list back up, that's involved in the buy it is back program. what do you do? >> go to your local fiat-chrysler dealer. give them a few days. they may not have the details right away. two days ago the company recalled more than a million cars and trucks that could be prone to cyber hacking. today's fine and the penalties are part of the national highway traffic safety administration's efforts to get more aggressive in investigating automotive defects and holding automakers accountable after it took heat for taking so long on the gm ignition switch recall that killed more than 100 people. >> we'll put the information on our website as well.

war hero status of john mccain, called his opponents everything from stupid dummy, idiot. he gave out the cell phone number of a rival. why do you think republicans are responding to him? he's zooming ahead in every single poll. >> first of all, i think you recognize this is very early. i also think he's speaking out to people that are frustrated with washington frustrated in many cases with both parties. there is an element of that in both parties. i think you see bernie sanders at 35% on the democrat side and quite frankly, you know with 16 candidates and 16 choices, i think you're going to see a lot of people surge and move ahead and move behind. even trump recognized that. it will be a long process. i think we have a varsity squad on the field. what i'm excited about is the fact that a lot of candidates

are already beating hillary clinton in the important states. that's important because hillary clinton is at 100% name i.d. and our candidates are beating her. >> i want to get to hillary clinton in a moment. let me stay on trump. do you worry there might be long-term damage to the republican party brand? he's got an unfavorability rate among general election voters from 57 59% depending on the polling you look at. if general election voters think republican party equals trump, is that bad news for you? >> wrote think people think that. i think all the candidates speak for themselves. it is a long process. it will be 15 16 more months until november. i don't see that savannah. i think people understand everyone speaks for themselves. i'm not worried. i agree tone matters and how you speak matters. our moms said it's not what you say but how you say it.

most people understand that. >> last thing on this. do you fear an independent run from trump? most political analysts say if trump ran an independent campaign it would peel off enough republican votes to all but assure a hillary clinton victory. do you have to tiptoe around him to make sure it doesn't happen? >> i don't think so. but my job isn't to call balls and strikes but treat everyone respectfully and fairly. but certainly our candidates should pledge not to run as a third party candidate. i don't see it happening. i think even understands that if hillary clinton is going to get beat she's going to get beat by a republican. most people who run for president run to win. if our candidates want to win they will have to run as a republican. i don't fear that. i think you have seen trump walk that back it is ward the last few days as well. >> you have a slate of 16

candidates. you call them the varsity squad. many experienced, qualifieding thoughtful with policy positions. many of them are worried about getting onto the primetime debate stage. have you heard complaints about the fact that only ten of them will be able to be in the top tier debate? >> it's really clear for everyone to understand if you go back to the beginning, back to 2008 back to 2012 we had 23 debates in a traveling circus no control over moderators. we have taken control of the debates. we'll have fewer debates. we have some say over the moderators. not completely but some. we'll have a definite calendar. the other thing people need to understand every candidate will be able to compete in debate night. there is going to be two rounds of debates. there will be an early debate and a debate a couple hours later featuring the top ten. all 16 are going to be debating on debate night. it's just that i think people

understand we can't fit 16 candidates on a stage. we are splitting the debate into two heats. >> with all of the candidates vying because they want to be on the main stage does that mean hillary clinton can go about her business because the republicans are balting to get on stage? >> you know it's not bad to have a battle instead of a coronation like hillary clinton. everyone is so curious about how the debates will work on the republican side. no one is asking the question when is hillary clinton going to debate bernie sanders. there seems to be no interest on the other side. the interest on our side gives us a leg up. you're seeing it now. people across the country now one of the biggest problems hillary clinton has with americans is trustworthiness. it's why our candidates with a lower name i.d. are already beating hillary clinton in important states across america. i'm excited about what's going on.

before crashing in a yard of a home. no one on the ground was lion saga rolls on. police spotted the large cat in a ravine and set up a perimeter to try to contain it. but it ran off into the woods. coming up how safe is your rental car? on rossen report a hidden camera investigation showing popular chains putting you behind the wheel of cars with potentially dangerous problems. >> lots to get to. let's start with the desperate search for two 14-year-old florida boys missing at sea. they went out for a day of fishing on friday and haven't been heard from since. sunday crews found their capsized boat. kerry sanders, what's the latest? >> reporter: the latest is that the u.s. navy has joined the u.s. coast guard in what they are classifying still as an active search and rescue mission. they are also not downplaying

the enormity of the effort that's under way here. as we look at a live picture of the area where they are searching, they have every minute more area to search because of what's known as the gulf stream a flow of water going north at 6 miles per hour. the area they are now searching exceeds the size of the state of maine. all night the desperate search went on. nbc news was allowed aboard one of the coast guard planes searching for a sign of 14-year-olds perry cohen and austin stefanos. sunday night friends and family packed the gym at jupiter christian school to pray for their safe return. >> kind of a shock. hopefully they come back safe. >> reporter: for two days searchers turned up nothing. sunday morning -- >> coast guard received report of an over turned vessel black bottom. >> reporter: the coast guard found the boys' 19-foot boat capsized 67 miles east of

daytona, 170 miles north of where they set sail at jupiter inlet. it gave searchers something to work with. but the search area is more than 33,000 square miles. that's the size of maine. >> i just want him home. i know he's coming home. i just want him home now. >> reporter: austin and perry were last seen buying $110 of gas friday afternoon before setting out for a day of fishing. >> oh he ate it! >> reporter: that afternoon the weather was threatening. the national weather service issued a warning to boaters saying they should seek safe harbor immediately. their families say the two were not supposed to leave the safety of the inlet but they were experienced sailors. >> they have been through rough water, thin water. it opportunity matter. those are salty dog kids. >> reporter: neighbors and friend jay namath is lending his support. >> we just keep on praying, man. it's so hard.

her health and her condition yesterday. the family confirmed that after six months of unresponsive health conditions. she's only 22 years old. she was rushed to the hospital january 31 after being found in her bathtub in her home outside of atlanta. apparently she never regained consciousness despite conflicting reports of her condition. she was the only child of bobby brown and whitney houston who, of course, died also in the bathtub in 2012. the houston family released a statement saying in part she's finally at peace in the arms of god. we once again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during the last few months. there was an overwhelming response of grief and compassion. but oprah winfrey, the houston family think she's finally at peace. since her mother's passing she had turbulent sadness in life. >> you got the sense even before

hit-and-run crash in the juniata neighborhood. an suv slammed into a car at east luzerne and i streets last night. a man inside the car died of his injuries. a second victim is in stable condition. about an hour after the crash police did find the suv in north philadelphia but the driver was gone. police will continue their search today for two sets of suspects wanted in connection with two robberies at cvs stores over the weekend. first in burlington burlington county investigators say an armed suspect walked into the cvs on neck road yesterday morning and demanded cash. no one was in -- no one in the store was injured. meantime we now have a surveillance picture of two robbers who tied up employees at a delaware county cvs on saturday night. police say the men shown here walked into the store in aspen, around closing time. that's when investigators say the men forced two employees into a back room and tied them up. the employees were not injured. the robbers got away with some cash. contact police if you have any information. i'm tracy davidson. another local update in 25 minutes. you can always get the latest

companies are working to fix a 911 problem in burkes county. the county's department of emergency services says sprint wireless customers are hearing a squealing noise when they call 911. the dispatchers hear the same noise making communication impossible. sprint and verizon are working on the problem. pennsylvania governor tom wolf will be in willow grove to promote schools and pursh his budget plan. he will visit willow grove elementary school. the governors an state lawmakers have not been able to break a budget stalemate. wolf proposed a tax on the a natural gas industry to fund $1 billion for schools. in delaware governor markell will welcome young scientists and engineers to the university of delaware. the conferences focuses on coastal environment. scientists and engineers will exchange projects and research to protect the coast.
