5:42 pm
5:43 pm
have you seen this? 35 women on one magazine cover, all of the women say they are bill cosby's alleged sexual assault victims. the new issue of "new york" magazine hits stands tomorrow. some of the women revealed their identities for the very first time on this cover. the alleged victims range in age from the early 20s to 80s. the allegations against bill cosby have sparked conversations and questions over the last year. the cover of "new york" magazine sparking more discussion with its powerful image prompting the empty chair hash tag on social media which has been trending. joining me are two women from the women's center of montgomery county. christine, a volunteer and community educator coordinator and rosie, a board member and volunteer counselor. thank you for being here. stunning striking bombshell. just some of the words used to describe the cover. both of your initial reactions to seeing it? >> well we think the cover just
5:44 pm
reflects the whole situation here, that there were probably so many people who have been impacted by this kind of problem of sexual harassment sexual assault. we don't know the facts in this particular case but we do know that there are so many people who are victims of intimate partner abuse, abuse by other people, and to see them all together certainly shows that there is some increased credibility here. >> each person's story is different but there are certain common facts and we know how difficult it is for rape victims, sexual assault victims to come forward and tell their stories. the fact there are so many people doing that we think is really powerful. >> you think that is what that empty chair represents in this picture? >> absolutely. there are so many unnamed people at this point that could potentially be involved. >> i guess the sad part about it is that you need 35 people to come together to bring some
5:45 pm
believability to the story that alone that the stories are not as believable until they come together as a group. you don't have as much credibility. so we are sort of disappointed in that. we see that again and again, if one person comes forward it's just like we saw with the ray rice video, until we saw the video there wasn't as much belief. in a way, it's sort of both ways. we are obviously, it's great they came out, we appreciate their bravery is amazing because it is hard especially with the notoriety. we see that in domestic violence, if the partner is a doctor, lawyer, and in this case, bill cosby, how hard it is. they don't think anyone will believe them. >> the cover focuses attention on the victims. up until now much of that attention has been on cosby. how much of a difference will that make in the conversation? >> i think that's huge. we can't lose sight of the fact that the victims are just that the people whose story isn't being told.
5:46 pm
the people who if they don't come forward have no chance of getting support and resources and there are so many resources in the community that are available to people who have been victims of sexual assault, domestic violence. we want them to be connected. we are hopeful now that more people will come forward, will contact agencies like ours and others, and get the help that they can use. >> just quickly, for those who say bill cosby has maintained his innocence, he hasn't been charged, to see this with such similarities with all of their stories, and to see it all at once for 35 women on the cover, do you think that will be enough to change their minds? >> hopefully it will because if all of these people are saying the same story, as counselors the first thing we always are taught to do everyone should do, is to believe the story no matter what it is. believe the person. so of course this now we have so many people which again, it's a shame it took so many people. hopefully the emphasis will be
5:47 pm
on what they're going through, the trauma they went through during this ordeal. >> we missouriknow the conversation will continue. thank you both. we appreciate your time. we can also tell you that one woman who does not appear on the "new york" magazine cover is andrea the former temple university employee who claims cosby drugged and raped her in 2004. her lawsuit led to the deposition where cosby admitting to obtaining drugs for women he wanted to have sex with. cosby has denied the assault allegations and has never been charged with a crime. we want to turn to breaking news now. hundreds of people are without power in montgomery county after this. that big tree there fell on wires on the side of the road. you see crews on scene in some of the video from sky force 10. this is the 8,000 block of brookside in elkins park. about 330 homes don't have electricity. we will update you on this breaking news.
