nbc 10 news starts now. a wild chase with a wilder ending. new information about the suspect who led police on that chase through two states overnight. we're live to show you just what happened within the past hour. and live look outside at center city philadelphia. calm winds and the heat and humidity are back on today. you can expect temperatures to hit 90 out there. if you think that sounds hot, well just wait until you hear whts in what's in store for the rest of the week. good morning. i'm chris cato. we begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. it's a humid start to the morning out there. different than what we saw yesterday when we had the nice

cool temperatures to start the day. bill is here with a look at what we can expect. good morning. >> good morning chris. the temperatures will be climbing climbing. the humidity is higher will go higher not only today but over the next few days. the temperatures 76 degrees in philadelphia. trenton and wilmington in the low 70s, 69 degrees in pottstown but we're headed for the 90s this afternoon with just a light breeze blowing. bright sunshine we'll see it during the day and warm things up to near 80 degrees by 9:00. by lunch time 86 degrees with mostly sunny skies. we'll go through neighborhood by neighborhood with the forecast when i come back in ten minutes. right now, jessica boyington has a look at your first alert traffic. jessica? >> we are on the schuylkill expressway where we are dealing with ongoing construction on the schuylkill expressway, spring garden off ramp. you'll not have access to the schuylkill expressway westbound from this ramp. as you can see, it says road closed in our cameras. still an 11-minute drive time

headed westbound from the blue route. eastbound doing fine as well. girard avenue to the schuylkill expressway in this direction and you'll be just fine. as for the pa turnpike moving along nicely east and westbound. just a 23-minute trip at the most. mass transit one no problems or delays for new jersey transit, septa or the patco speed line. >> rammed rolled and arrested. we've had new developmented in the past hour involving that robbery suspect from last night who led police on a wild chase that went back and forth between philadelphia and south jersey for two hours. nbc 10's katy zachry live for us in southwest philadelphia. katy, what's happening now? >> this was quite a wild chase, chris, you're right. earlier this morning, the suspect was escorted into southwest detectives right behind me. that's after he was released from the hospital following this two-hour long police chase. here is video of him. what our cameras caught as he

was going into southwest detectives. sources tell nbc 10 he is robert ritter from blackwood, new jersey. you can see the high-speed chase he led police on for over two hours last night. he drove the white van from oakland, new jersey then into philadelphia throughout the city, back to new jersey where he sped through a crowded mall parking lot and once again into philadelphia. philly police say he crashed near the airport after he tried to navigate a tight turn. >> he just looked dazed and confused. we're fortunate no one was injured, the public. the officers did a nice job, the aviation unit the pennsylvania state police from oakland, staying behind the car at a safe distance. >> ritter is wanted for robbing a new jersey business with a shotgun. they did consider him armed and dangerous last night. they also told us why this police chase happening on a monday night actually helped them.

we'll talk about that coming up in the next half hour. reporting live in southwest philadelphia katy zachry nbc 10 news. man, what a chase, though. we'll give you some perspective, though, this two-state chase, we'll map it out for you so you can understand why it lasted so long and took police so long to stop the guy. here is oakland, new jersey in camden county. the guy start in oakland, he goes across the walt whitman bridge the sports complex, south philadelphia gets back on 95, he goes 295 a little bit there, goes down on to the black horse pike back up into camden. takes a tour of camden gloucester city on to 42 south and down to the deptford mall where he actually drives through the mall parking lot. pardon me as i crouch. takes a tour there. police are still following him. he goes back up 42 back into camden decides then to get on

676. he doesn't have to pay the toll there obviously. he goes into philadelphia, old city drives past the liberty bell, independence mall, goes up frankford avenue to north philly before he somehow gets on to delaware avenue back down past sugarhouse casino. don't know if he tried to stop and play slots or anything. back down all the way across the river on 95 the schuylkill that is towards the airport where he eventually gets off of 95 there near the airport and that's when police were finally able to do that pit maneuver and stop the van. i'm exhausted. explaining that. clearly had guy had a full tank of gas when the chase started. the amazing thing is no one was injured in all of that. great work by police there. if you want an even better look at how that chase unfolded check the nbc 10 mobile app for a closer look. we produced a time lapsed video

so you can watch the entire two-hour chase in just about six minutes. happening today, a philadelphia man accused of stabbing his wife and 1-year-old daughter will face a judge in maryland. police arrested stephen burton sunday night. now, it's unclear at this time when he'll be brought back to philadelphia to face charges. one of his neighbors told nbc 10 she heard his wife, danecia burton screaming inside her home in west oak lane sunday morning she went over to see what was happening and saw stephen burton standing over her, cutting her with a knife. police say stephen burton also stabbed the 1-year-old daughter in the stomach. both mother and child remain in critical condition. jury selection resumes in the trial of a man accused of murdering a perspective buyer from craigslist. thomas coffey faces a list of

charges. cook was gunned down in west oak lane in 2013. police say he was in the area to buy an atv that he saw advertised on craigslist. they say when cook showed up to make the purchase coffey robbed and killed him. happening today, a panel will gather to look at a new report that proposes implementing universal pre-k. this comes on the heels of a new study showing the majority of pre-k centers fall short of delivering high-quality education to children. that study revealed it costs on average close to $12,000 a year to educate a child. state funding for each child falls about $3,000 short of that. >> you think of a room of ten children, that's a gap of $30,000 that a high quality center has to make up some way, often through outside donations

in order to provide the quality of care kids need to succeed. >> this push is part of a nationwide effort by the obama administration. advocates say research shows early childhood learning is critical in making sure children start school prepared. getting prepared in another way here preparing for the pope. believe it or in the, we're less than two months away from pope francis's historic visit to philadelphia. the pressure is building for city officials to release a plan of how people can get around while the pontiff is in town. tracy davidson is live in our digital operations center. this is pretty important information the city still hasn't shared with anyone. right? >> it's estimated 2 million people will jam the city for the pope's visit in late september. how am i supposed to get from point "a" to point "b"? mayor michael nutter adressed the issue yesterday. he said city leaders have yet to decide on street closures and security zones.

the mayor emphasized keeping pope francis safe is a priority. >> i'm not planning to give every nut case in the universe a significant amount of advanced information from a security standpoint as exactly where and when and how and what route pope francis will be transported. >> so it's a balance. also yesterday, septa was supposeded to announce when it would put the papal regional rail passes back on sale. it postponed the announcement until sometime later this week. last week you'll remember septa and website crashed on the first day, within the first few hours of selling those special passes. >> one community in bucks county declare a state of emergency to handle the pope's visit. middletown township's police chief recommended that declaration. the township's woodbourne septa station is one of the five train stations during the papal visit.

we've got a heat wave brewing that will take us right on through the weekend and beyond. the longest duration heat wave of the summer so far is just ahead. 68 degrees right now, though, in doylestown, nace and clear. just a few scattered clouds in philadelphia and millville with readings in the 70s at this hour. it's dry on beach avenue no showers heading your way today. the few sprinkles that we saw overnight are moving offshore. now with the higher humidity we're watching for areas of fog, seeing light fog in pottstown, just under a mile visibility. it's hazleton in the pocono mountains that's getting dense fog at quarter-mile visibility. no fog in delaware or south jersey. the high clouds are monthing out ingmoving out. sprinkles are offshore. there are thunderstorms in our future. just won't see them today. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast 88 for mt. pocono 94 in allentown, reading at 93

was linda up sshur. >> i knew her for like three or four years. my husband passed away. when i moved out i left a lot of things behind. i guess that's how you guys found her ashes. >> she says she never intended disrespect. the box of ashes is now in police custody but upshur could get the proper scattering friends say she always wanted. more than 1,200 firefighters will continue battling that fire raging for days near fresno california. the willow fire. it broke out saturday afternoon and has torched more than 1,500 acres now. the fire is still only about 5% contained despite a steady air attack. dry grass and fallen trees from previous wildfires are fueling the flames. not too far away from that

in sacramento county a suspect is behind bars on multiple counts of arson after allegedly setting a grass fire. the browning fire has burned 450 acres and destroyed several homes. we expect a guilty plea from the upstate new york woman charged with helping two convicted murders escape from that prison last month. joyce mitchell hid hacksaw blades and other tools in frozen meat that was eventually given to david sweat and richard matt. after three week on the run matt was shot and killed by police sweat was captured and taken back into custody. 4:17 now. a florida community is hoping for the safe return of two teens who went missing when they went out on a fishing trip friday. yesterday, hundreds had of people gathered to pray for austen stephanos and cohen.

on sunday those two were on a 19-foot boat and the boat they were found on -- the boat was capsized about 70 miles offshore, 170 miles north of where they left. a captain who was on the water the same day the teens left he says there was a bad storm headed toward the shore. he says all of the boats were racing toward the inlet except for three, including the one the missing boys may have been aboard. >> the storm was gone. i turned around and looked back there. it was like this it was nice out but you know, i had no idea what happened to them. >> navy crews are a part of the u.s. coast guard's expanded search of the florida coastline today. 4:18 now. lawyers for comedian bill cosby is appealing a judge's decision to unseal court filings that revealed controversial admissions about his sexual encounters. earlier this month, a judge unsealed cosby's deposition in a sexual battery lawsuit involving

a former temple university employee. the documents, quote, cosby is saying he gave the women quaaludes before sexual incounters. it's cosby's only testimony under oath about accusations he sexually assaulted several women. a woman says smoke from her neighbor's barbecue grill was so strong it made her eyes water and she even got a headache. that's the focus of an ongoing feud that has gone viral. a county environmental specialist cited the man for producing too much smoke. the brothers say they're being harassed. >> the woman shot video of smoke coming from the grill which the men say she's -- video of the smoke citation has been viewed online over 4 million times. now your first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> getting a warm start and watching for areas of fog,

hasn't hit philadelphia and probably will not. some of the western suburbs seeing fog with the higher humidity that's going to stay with us through the day. here you can see a little bit of haze on the horizon. this is a view from the comcast center in center city. the humidity up there at 58%. so far, we're 5 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. it's going to be a hotter afternoon, too. boathouse road is all lit up. we'll see lots of sunshine to push the temperatures into the 90s later today. we're watching the radar screen. we saw a pop of showers and thunderstorms yesterday afternoon. they're out of the picture right now. the next round of showers and thunderstorms, a long way away. it's moving through the dakotas. we'll be watching that for later on thursday. thursday afternoon, that's a cold front that will be coming into the area. behind it some drier air. we'll feel the humidity come down as we go into the end of the week but before this line moves in heat and humidity will be building in our area and the

temperatures will soar over the next few days. then come thursday afternoon, here we go we'll be tracking a line of showers and thunderstorms. that's 2:00 thursday afternoon. that will be sweeping through the philadelphia area most likely during the evening commute. hot, humid weather is ahead and it starts today. sunny skies, hot and humid into the 90s this afternoon. and we'll feel even hotter tomorrow in the days to come. got the seven-day forecast with the details when i'm back in the next half hour. >> steamy. thank you bill. 4:21. let's see how the brave to work is shaping up for those of you who like to head out the door in the wee morning hours. here's jessica boyington. >> we're doing a big check on new jersey roads 295 around the black horse pike. inactive work zone but we're losing the right-hand lane -- left-hand shoulder, excuse me, on both sides. 13 minutes from 38 up towards this point at the black horse pike. the 42 freeway is looking okay

as well. northbound is typically where we'll see the volume in the morning hours. 55 up toward the walt whitman bridge, a five-minute trip. currently no problems on the walt whitman bridge. the rest of the area bridges okay as well. no opening scheduled for the tac pal. we'll have more drive times coming up in the next ten minutes. chris? 4:22 now. officials in south jersey are urging people to attend two public hearings surrounding the state's proposal to build a natural gas pipeline. the state wants to build that pipeline through burlington monmouth and ocean counties. today's hearing are happening at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. both at the manchester township municipal building at 1 colonial drive. mystery solved. this woman was hurt in a frightening crash but she never figured out who came to her aid until nbc 10 stepped in. we'll take you to their reunion.

nbc 10 was there last night when a woman met the good samaritan who helped her after she was injured riding her bicycle on the schuylkill river trail. she met steve klein for the first time. carrie says she hit another rider and flipped off her bike.

she was knocked unconscious and woke up to find a strange man holding her neck. the mystery man left after the ambulance arrived. she wanted help tracking down her mystery helper and last night she met him in person. >> after the accident i kept asking my husband who this person was, this person i woke up to and, you know, all i know is his name is steve but there happened to be a picture on one of the biker's phones. >> we were all very concerned about her and never expected to know anything more and the fact that she reached out through facebook and nbc 10 is just an amazing testament to the power of social media today. >> pretty awesome, isn't it? carrie gave steve a cycling shirt for the group she rides with which raises money for cancer research. carrie says she's okay and ready to get back on the bike soon. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> 4:26. 74 degrees. a light, gentle breeze blowing this morning.

nbc 10 news starts now. >> the driver who led police on a two-hour two-state chase had a busy night. this morning we have new information about what happened to that driver overnight. doing more than shopping. police arrested this man inside a walmart for allegedly recording video under a woman's skirt. this may be just the start of their investigation. temperatures are heating up. today we should hit 90. as you'll see, it's only the beginning of a hot week ahead. it's 4:30. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. it even looks steamy out there this morning just looking at it. you can tell the humidity is back when you step outside. guess who else is back? >> bill henley. >> he is. >> he came back for another day. >> can't have one without the other. >> can't have humidity without henley. let me show you what's happening outside. the temperatures will be running higher throughout the day. it's warmer in philadelphia, at 76 degrees
