case today. >> the charges include racketeering bribery and money laundering. today's indictment also points to the congressman's wife nbc10 news anchor renee chenault chenault-fattah chenault-fattah's purported involvement in the crimes. >> fattah's impact on the community and impact in washington. >> the 29 count indictment accuses fattah of misusing hundreds of thousands of dollars of federal, charitable and campaign funds. fattah's associates are charged with racketeering conspiracy. charged with bribery, conspiracy to commit bank and mail fraud and money laundering among other things. prosecutors say those charges covered five schemes in 2007. authorities alleged the congressman paid off part of a million dollar campaign loan with charitable donations and federal grants.

he's accused of using campaign money to pay his son's student loan debt. nbc10 news anchor renee chenault-fattah is married to the congressman. the feds allege renee's car is part of a scheme to help the fattah's finance a vacation home. renee is not indicted. >> the public does not expect their elected officials to misuse campaign funds. misappropriate government funds, accept bribes or commit bank fraud. these type of criminal acts betray the public's trust. >> he's done nothing wrong, congressman fattah was at work in washington today. a court date will be set. harry hairston joins us now. you spoke with the congressman when these allegations began to surface. you spoke with him today, he spoke today when the charges were announced? >> yes, he did come out and speak today, that's right. for the past eight years, a cloud of suspicion has followed

him. today on capitol hill congressman fattah stated neither he nor any of the others named in the indictment did anything wrong. >> i understand but the rico charge, what's unusual about it the one thing on first blush i can agree with he said this at the end, i think it may be one of the more important items, these are allegations that the people involved are innocent until proven otherwise. >> for years, congressman chaka fattah has maintained his innocence ever since losing the mayoral campaign. he's been on the fbi radar. today's indictment alleges the congressman use campaign funds to pay off his son's college debt. over the last year i've asked both the congressman and his son about those claims. both have told me those claims are false. furthermore, the two

congressman's former associates plead guilty last year to federal charges. greg nailer a former fattah aide admitted to helping fattah conceal finance related fraud schemes. later his legal problems deepened. when thomas lyndon failed plead guilty to wire fraud and implicated fattah. now, it's chaka fattah who will have his day in court. his son will also fight charges, he committed bank fraud and tax evasion. >> harry hairston thank you. >> fattah has vowed to remain in office and fight the charges, he did step down from his leadership post as the top democrat on the house preparations subcommittee. >> tim furlong went to washington today. as soon as we heard about the indictment. he's been speaking with leaders there, also fattah's colleagues on capitol hill. what did they have to say, tim? >> we hit the road as soon as we heard this we knew the house was in session. we've decided we would come to washington to talk to

congressman fattah's house colleagues from pennsylvania. we spoke with one of his older friends here who said he's shocked and disappointed about these allegations. >> congressman bob brady was driving to d.c. today when he heard his friend of 40 years had been indicted. his immediate reaction. >> brady says it's a major loss for philadelphia. fattah has now stepped down from his post as a ranking member of the house appropriations committee. >> a lot of money, a lot of resources in the city of philadelphia. >> in his capitol hill office brady tells me he feels bad for fattah's family the congressman seems to be handling the news okay on the floor. >> he was right back in the corner with all of us. >> brady tells me he doesn't know anything about the people indicted along with fattah he hopes the allegations against his friend aren't true. >> even in the indictment when i read it it said these are just allegations, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. i hope that would be the case for him.

>> the buzz really is the appropriations seat is a big loss. brady's going to get personal. he shares a little of their conversation. i asked him, and he gives us an explanation. can he still be effective in the house with this major cloud hanging over him? live in washington, tim furlong, nbc10 news? >> thank you very much. there are four other people indicted in the same case here. bonnie was the district chief of staff at fattah's philadelphia office. she was in charge of the congressman's personal and campaign financial transactions. herbert beterman was a finance director lobbyist and senior consultant. and robert vlad is the founder of company two, a company for public policy. he's a spouse of a former fattah congressional staffer. voters have elected fattah

to congress 11 times, he's been a leader on improving education and the lives of young people in his district. >> that district covers several portions of philadelphia and part of the montgomery county suburbs. >> sydney congressman fattah has a lot of support from people in his district. >> jackie and keith, he truly does, he has been a tireless advocate for young people inspiring them and enticing them to get involved give back in their communities and also graduate with specialty degrees. >> a lot of people look up to him. and a lot of kids want to be just like him. >> darryl goodman was one of those kids inspired by congressman chaka fattah and his family having found peace and unity after prison at the master street house of emoja. it's reformed gang members to turn their lives around and pay it forward, so other young people find the right path.

fattah has been a champion for youth advocacy. luring them to enrole in science, technology engineering and math programs and getting them scholarship money to achieve their goals. >> he has many success stories of putting kids through school with the robotics program, i've known many kids i dealt with and said well i just came from chaka fattah's organization. >> good man now meanters young people as ceo in the city's manchu with a neighborhood. drexel graduate janelle johnson also inspired by fattah's youth are our future. hard work ethic. >> in the camp, we teach them about literacy we teach them to do volunteer services. teach them a little bit about giving back to their community. >> the overal sentiment here in his district is that he has stood up for them. now it's time for them to stand

up for the congressman. truly a lot of shock and disappointment in these communities where he had had such close ties. live in west philadelphia cydney long, nbc10 news. recapping what we know now, congressman chaka fattah says he's confident he'll be cleared after the feds charged him in a 29 count indictment today. he's not resigning, but he did step down on a house panel. he's accused of manage using hundreds of thousands of dollars of federal charitable and campaign funds. four associates are also charged. the indictment also points to his wife nbc10 news anchor renee chenault-fattah as being involved in part of the alleged crimes she has not been indicted. renee is now on leave from the station. nbc10 will continue to follow this as it unfolds, still ahead, what mayor nutter said today about fattah and the allegations against him. we also have full coverage on our website, including a breakdown of the charges and

fattah's entire on camera response response. tonight a first alert weather day for dangerous heat. >> let's check in with sheena parveen. >> keith and jacqueline we are talking about a lot of 90 degree temperatures in the forecast. today we have a first alert weather day. this goes into tomorrow as well. we're talking about dangerous heat staying in the forecast we will be feeling close to 100 degrees tomorrow and even today some areas do feel like the upper 90s, thunderstorms also in the forecast tomorrow mostly in the afternoon i'll show you the timing coming up. feels like temperature right now, when you factor in the humidity, this is what it feels like when you step outside, 98 degrees is the feels like temperature in philadelphia. 88 in wildwood. that's where you can get a little bit of relief. feels like 97 degrees in wilmington. we have an excessive heat warning, and this one will

continue through the area even through part of the day tomorrow, you want to stay hydrated. avoid the peek heat hours, wear loose fitting clothing and if you have to be outside, stay cool by going inside periodically, or at least staying in the shade. some areas seeing relief from the heat mostly in delaware, we have heavy showers moving through milford, closer to the delaware beaches. dover seeing one small heavy shower. in this area we have a flood advisory until 8:15 this evening. we've seen about an inch of rainfalling. those showers kind of remaining in that same location. as we go through the rest of the evening, it's going to stay hot and humid, a chance of an isolated shower, most of us will stay dry. by 8:00 tonight, temperatures mid-80s, low 80s, staying humid overnight and more hot humid weather tomorrow. we'll have storms with that too. i'll show you the timing of it am coulding up. >> looking forward to that. months after a hit and run

an arrest in a hit and run that killed a little philadelphia boy. shah 'nique ka mason turned herself in today.

he was just four years old. mason ran over this boy in kensington in april, she faces several charges, including homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter. a worker in the delaware park racetrack has been questioned after shooting near the stables. sky force ten over the scene before 10:00 this morning. the victim was another worker. he was shot in the stomach and is in stable condition. in was an argument before that shooting. >> a husband and wife on the run no more. investigators have arrested this couple here suspected of stealing the identities of several elderly people in montgomery county. eric and porsche martin are being held on $75,000 bail each this afternoon the martins ran a heating and air conditioning repair center. authorities say they swinned elled tens of thousands of dollars using the names and social security numbers of unsuspecting victims.

we're going to get back now to our first alert weather as we deal with dangerous heat outside. many seniors on fixed incomes don't run air conditioning or simply don't have it. that's why places like martin luther king older adult certainer fill up with people trying to escape hot row homes and apartments. it was also the site of a free giveaway of 500 fans sponsored by walmart and the city of philadelphia. of course when you think of seniors, children are also on that list as some of the most at risk to excessive heat. >> brittney shipp joins us live in center city many how hard is it to stay cool in this heat? >> really is a delicate balance between still trying to enjoy your summer day and making sure you're staying safe. one of the things the red cross recommends is coming to places like this to the pool or even the mall any place that has air conditioning especially if you do not have air conditioning. that's one way you can beat the heat there are also simple

precautions, summer camps and parents can do to make sure they keep the danger of heat related illnesses away. >> 30 minutes that's all these campers get at the spray park in philly, an hour less than a normal wednesday. >> if we see them like run in their face being red and stuff, we tell them to get a drink of water. >> then it's time to march back to camp. indoor arts and crafts is on the menu. >> what did you pack? >> sunscreen, i brought some gatorade. i bought him a new shirt to keep the sun off him. >> it's going to be 90 degrees, wen watted to be able to be cool today and enjoy ourselves. >> this family set up shop right under this tree trying to find a delicate balance between enjoying the summer day and staying safe. >> i don't think they paid me no mind. >> it doesn't matter? >> it don't matter. >> i went in the sprinklers the pool and i drank lots of water. >> while this water park is packed to beat the heat this

basketball court next door is desserted. one brave family stayed on this tennis court, but is still prepared with plenty of fluids. >> it doesn't bother me i got some water, cool water. >> as you can see, everyone is filing into the pool right now, this is a popular time the bottom line on excessive heat warnings if you do decide to go outside, make sure you limit your outdoor activity. drink plenty of water and fluids and liquids throughout the day. for more we're going to check in with sheena parveen. >> like you just talked about, dangerous heat is in the forecast, not just today, but also tomorrow we have that excessive heat warning out for tomorrow too. here's a look at center city. we're kind of seeing that hot hazy look outside, you see the haziness out there, the humidity is certainly around and it's going to stay around as we go

through the rest of today and tonight. some areas already are feeling like the upper 90s, it's a first alert weather day out for the area, because of the heat which is considered dangerous heat at this point with temperatures feeling so much hotter near 100 degrees as we go through tomorrow. thunderstorms also in the forecast tomorrow and the heat and humidity will only fuel those across the area. we will be tracking more storms as we go into tomorrow afternoon. temperatures 91 degrees, humidity is actually making it feel like 98 degrees, so it feels 7 degrees hotter than it really is. take a look at our temperature trend yesterday. we hit 93 degrees today so far. tomorrow we'll be hitting the low 90s, we are going to watch for those thunderstorms which in some areas could hold the temperatures down a bit if the rain comes in a bit earlier. we expect to be around 90 degrees fry and saturday as well. we are talking about an extended heat wave. the heat wave is currently building now.

we only have three days of temperatures in the 90s, we expect way more than three days of this as we go through the weekend. philadelphia 97 is what it feels like. you see the wind arrows on the map too our winds are coming in mostly from the south and southwest, that is a warm and humid wind direction. that's going to continue for tomorrow. the dangerous heat is across the area from about mercer county down to new castle county areas in between, excessive heat warning that runs through 6:00 tomorrow evening that means it's going to be feeling close to 100 degrees in some locations. most of us are dry, not seeing much in the way of rain relief unless you are in kent county in delaware, in sussex county right along someone in a to dover we have heavy showers there, and even through parts of sussex county we've been seeing the heavy rain here from milford to lewes. local when i heavy rain this is one area where we've had a flood advisory out for a while. we've already seen about an inch of rain in this area.

at least that's at one spot seeing a bit of a break from the heat today. feature temperatures this is going to factor in the humidity as well the future feels like temperature as we go into 9:00 tomorrow morning. we're looking at temperatures feeling like the mid-90s, tomorrow afternoon, 2:00 p.m. could be feeling already like triple digits. we will have storms moving through. aside from the heat and humidity we will be dealing with thunderstorms. here's future weather, we're going to be staying on the dryer side. very early tomorrow morning, models have been trying to pick up on a few showers trying to move in. a majority of that will be in the afternoon. once we get hot through the day, that's going to help fuel any thunderstorms, by noon there's a chance we could see a couple storms trying to pop up early afternoon by 3:00 p.m. we could see more organized thunderstorms approaching philadelphia and then moving to the shore by about 5:00 p.m. after that we should start to see things wind down. by 9:00 10:00 tomorrow evening a lot of those storms will be

out of here we can't rule out locally heavy rain and gusty winds with those two. for tonight, we have early showers around mostly south of philadelphia right now, mostly in areas of delaware warm and humid in the overnight hours too. low 70s, areas north and west. hot and humid, thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon hours. temperatures still at about the low 90s, we will be watching those temperatures closely, with any showers that start to move in. friday less humid, even though we'll still be in the 90s friday we'll get a break from the humidity, the 90s are not going away until the middle of next week we're still going to be near 90 degrees. >> a big story that's caused such a reaction on social media. killing a protected lion the worldwide outrage that sent an american into hiding. and how he is responding to his critics.

more police officers will be patrolling hotspots for crime in wilmington. 14 officers are going to target gun violence and cracking down on violent crime. the reason for the shift, money. willmington city council hasn't approved funding for the restructuring of the police departments. district attorney seth williams is in northern liberties right now, he's at his third summer community walk. members of his outreach team, elected officials, police and service providers are also there. it's an opportunity for residents to ask questions and connect with legal and social services. >> a candlelight service is

planned tonight for a 5-year-old girl found raped and murdered 15 years ago today. friends and family will gather at 7:00 tonight in north philadelphia. ariana de jesus's body was discovered inside a building at 6th and pine. only a couple blocks from where she lived. her killer is still free. alexis florez is accused of killing the little girl. he's believed to be in hiding in his native honduras. helping young people stay on track and achieve their full potential. it's called my brother's keeper and it's part of a national initiative. a local action summit tonight. he opened discussion will involve government officials, business leaders and community stakeholders, the mayor spoke about the importance of a program yesterday on nbc10 news.

fattah for more than 35 years. >> this is a very very sad moment. >> philadelphia's chief politician tried to take the politics out of a brewing political scandal. >> my comments are really more about the person that i have known for a long period of time. >> the mayor said he did not witness or know about the congressman's alleged wrongdoing even as some allegations trace back to the 2007 mayoral race in which they competed. >> i was completely unaware of those activities and everything that's been alleged since then. >> congressman brought money and progress to philadelphia. >> the congressman has probably helped more young people go to college and graduate school than any other member of the united states congress. >> he rejected questions of whether fattah should resign his office. >> in america, at least, i think folks are innocent until proven guilty. he wanted no part of fattah's seat if he resigned. >> it's completely inappropriate in this moment at this time.

also tonight, we're dealing with some dangerous heat outside, nbc10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen joins us now. >> the heat was more intense today. >> humidity is up today, the heat is up today, and it's making it feel more like 98 degrees at the moment. we have a first alert weather day out today. this is going to continue tomorrow. dangerous heat with this in place, feeling close to 100 degrees, especially tomorrow in some areas. and aside from this tomorrow afternoon, we'll be tracking some thunderstorms across the area. the heat and humidity is going to help fuel any storms we have around. right now, the actual temperature is 90 degrees in allentown, actual temperature 91 in philadelphia many areas in the low 90s or upper 80s. humidity is making it feel like 5 to 7 degrees hotter than it really is. we do have the excessive heat warning out because of this. all the areas in between, this goes until tomorrow 6:00 p.m.

firefighters battle blazing temperatures along with flames today in philadelphia. look at the video, crews cooled down with wet towels icy drinks after knocking out a house fire in kensington. they rescued the man from a burning home too. the fire began with an explosion that happened around 5:30 this morning. we're waiting to hear what the cause is of that blast. in electron ton, crews toughed out the temperatures after a vac an the home went up in flames this morning. this was the scene here on south olden avenue. an ems team was on hand to check firefighters for any problems. two fire fighters went to the

hospital for caution. it's not clear how this fire started. in you were near the sports complex this morning, you may have seen this right here. fire and police everywhere disaster victims lying on the ground. >> a scary look when you first see it it was all a drill to get emergency crews prepared. randy gyllenhaal joins us live from south philadelphia. >> the crews had to deal with extreme heat as part of this training exercise. >> for a chemical disaster drill, they have to wear those heavy protective suits. it got so hot today, they had to end this drill early, that was more than enough time for them to train first responders for a potential terror attack inside the city's subway system. >> on one of the hottest days of the year emergency crews get a frantic 911 call. a dirty bomb has exploded in the subway. rescue crews race to the underground tunnel.

same thing, except the heat tomorrow will help to fuel some thunderstorms in the afternoon. so we'll be tracking that as well. we're at 93 degrees, that's what it feels like in allentown, feels like 98 in philadelphia. feels like 91 in millville, feels like 90 in dover, 97 in wilmington. that is part of the reason why we do have that excessive heat warning out right now, the heat is dangerous, all the county shaded in pink here you're dealing with these temperatures that feel like the upper 90s, this is from new castle county to mercer county this is what we'll be watching as we go through tomorrow as well. like i mentioned, we'll also be seeing thunderstorms, aside from the temperatures feeling like the mid to upper 90s, the wind direction, it's coming in from the south and southwest. that is a very warm very humid wind direction in the humidity. that's what's making it feel much hotter than it really is. radar in parts of delaware trying to move into extreme south jersey into cumberland

county, these are crossing out of kent county now, some near dover pretty heavy at the moment. we have scattered showers in sussex county from milford to lewes to dewey beach. this area is under a flood advisory. at least it's providing a little bit of relief from the heat. take a look at future feels like temperatures, this is what it will feel like when you factor in the humidity come tomorrow morning. we're going to walk you through the morning hours 9:00 10:00 in the morning, already feeling like the mid-90s tomorrow. through the early afternoon, 2:00 p.m. could be feeling close to 100 degrees in some spots. this is all going to help to fuel any thunderstorms. we do expect storms as we go through the afternoon. take a look at future weather. tonight we say mostly dry, very warm and humid, we could have a few isolated showers in the morning, but a majority of the activity will be here later in the day. by noon we can have some pop-up showers, already maybe a couple thunderstorms, it's really into the early afternoon, 3:00 p.m.

the model starts to show more activity here. we could have strong showers or storms around. by 5:00 p.m. they could be making their way into new jersey and delaware. after that starting to slide offshore, we should be in the clear after about 10:00 p.m. tomorrow evening. either way before the storms get here, it's going to stay hot and humid through the entire area. early showers mostly south of philadelphia right now, mostly in delaware still, warm and humid overnight, about the 70s in the philadelphia area. tomorrow hot and humid thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon. temperatures will be right around the lower 90s, feeling much hotter with the humidity in place, we'll be watching those storms start to move in too. friday humidity will get lower, temperatures stay in the low 90s, relatively speaking it will feel better because of that humidity being lower, still a hot day over the weekend, though. the humidity starts to creep up going into next week temperatures pretty much stay in the 90s.
