not indicted we have live team coverage from washington, d.c. to the congressman's home district in our area. we're breaking down the indictment and looking at the impact it's having on people right here. >> we begin with with deanna durante who was there when the indictment was afwhoufrnsed in center city. it's 85 pages long let's begin with how long the investigation took. >> as you said it began with prosecutors looking into campaign finances. he wanted to leave city hall. prosecutors say after that they followed the money. >> no public official gets a free pass to ignore our laws. >> in a lengthy criminal indictment, four others engaged in money laundering. >> i accepted a $1 million campaign contribution in the form of a loan. disguised the illegal contribution as a loan to a consulting company. >> fattah also needed to get rid

of $130,000 campaign debt so he directed a political consultant the to apply for a multimillion dollar federal grant. the third scheme prosecutors say relates to his son and the repayment of his student loans. >> between 2007 and 2011 the political consultant the used the campaign funds to make loan payments on behalf of congressman fattah's son. >> reporter: the congressman's philadelphia office chief of staff bonnie becauser the head of a fattah nonprofit and a deputy mayor. also robert brand a former of a nonprofit technology company and spouse of a former fattah staffer. the bribery charge they say comes from beterman's $18,000 payment for the purchase of a call owned by renee

chenault-fattah. the car was never sold and the couple used the money to secure a mortgage for a vacation home. it was in exchange for the congressman's efforts in obtaining a ambassadorship for beterman. >> reporter: this is a long complaint, some of the penalties are hefty, bribery, racketeering carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. >> as for the congressman, he was in washington today, here's what he said soon after the indictment was made public. >> any unlawful activity and any misappropriation. these are allegations. the people involved are innocent until proven otherwise. >> the congressman was working today, he voted on some issues there in indictment. he did step down from his powerful role on the appropriations committee but vows to focus on his job. >> it's going to be important to

my constituents it not be a distraction in terms of my work and i'm going to try not to have him be a distraction. >> tim furlong headed for washington as soon as we found out about the fattah indictment tim is live where he spoke with congressman bob brady, who's also chairman of the democratic party in philadelphia. tim? >> as soon as we heard the word we wanted to speak with congressman fattah's colleagues here in the capitol, the house was in session today, and bob brady tells me he was alongside him doing the job on the house floor. >> reporter: between votes on the house floor today, bob brady gave us a few minutes to talk about his old but newly indicted friend and colleague. he spoke with fattah this afternoon. >> we have a pennsylvania corner we hang out in. he was in the corner with all of us the whole time many he was on the floor, upbeat voting he was there, people came up to

him, a hurt el he's going to get over. >> brady says he doesn't know the other people named in this case, he doesn't know anything about the allegations of bribery and illegal money shuffling, he hopes, he hopes this is all just a big misunderstanding. >> i've known him 40 years. i've known his family every one of them. this is sad this is happening, i hope things work out for the best. fattah will get his day in court, he will continue to serve but not on the finance committee. tim furlong, nbc10 news. >> we've been reporting on the fed's focus on congressman fattah for quite a while. harry hairston's been following the investigation in the congressman last year's

indictment as well of his son. harry? >> this cloud of suspicion has been over his head for quite some time. it started in 2007 when congressman fattah ran for the philadelphia mayoral seat. he received an unlawful million dollar loan in his campaign for mayor. he stole charitable grant funds to repay the remaining 600,000. multiple stories were done about fattah as leaks by federal officials suggested fattah used campaign funds to pay off his son's college debt. now, that debt repayment has been described in today's indictment. then last year greg nailer admitted in federal court to helping fattah conceal finance related fraud schemes. later, fattah's legal problems

deepened, a political consultant plead guilty to wire fraud and implicated fattah. shortly after those pleas, i questioned fattah himself about the statements that implicated him. >> in all of my years as an elected official i've never been involved never would be involved. in any illegal conduct. >> he dshtd know why his former aide would plead guilty. you may never know what kind of pressure people are under. >> as far as you say, he's done nothing wrong? >> i said i have never -- never is a very clear declaration, right? no illegal conduct at the time fattah told me he believes the feds were overzealous. >> we have some concerns about the conduct, this has been going on for several years. we think that it should come to some conclusion. >> now eight years later that conclusion started today, and will likely continue in a

courtroom. i also sat down with fattah's son who was indicted late last year on his own federal bank fraud and tax evasion charges. he's done nothing wrong and he believes the feds indicted him hoping to get him to testify against his father. junior's trial is scheduled to start later this year the two fattah former associates who plead guilty faced sentencing in december. >> for 20 years, congressman fattah has served a second congressional district here in pennsylvania. that district home to more than 645,000 people that includes parts of west philadelphia north philadelphia and northwest philadelphia. in addition to parts of south philadelphia center city and lower merion township in montgomery county. >> cydney long is in west philadelphia this evening talking to community members there and getting reaction. >> so many of the people we spoke to right here where fattah grew up and where he now serves very much consider him a warrior on their team. having always stood up for them

they say now they are doing the same. from a college student inspired by the opportunity of a scholarship to an ex-con who came through the doors of the fattah family inspired house and is turning his life and other lives around. >> devastated. where do we go from here. we want to take control. it's not many people that can fill his shoes. >> i was interested in the internship opportunities because of the program that he's hosted. >> i'm very shocked to hear that he was indicted today. very. because i'm -- this man, i held up here. so. >> vargas used to volunteer for fattah's campaign when he was running for mayor. so many that shook his hand over the years say they are truly saddened by today's serious allegations. live in west philadelphia, cydney long, nbc10 news. >> what happens next it is

important to know congressman fattah is not under arrest. he will have to appear in court, no date is set. he's confident he will be cleared of the charges. he's also vowed to stay in office. renee chenault-fattah is on leave from the station. we have continuing coverage on nbc10.com and the nbc10 app we have the entire 85 page indictment as well as congressman fattah's statement from washington. it is a first alert weather day, taking a live look at cape may, where people could be seeing some showers, also a little relief at the shore, afternoon sea breeze kept it from getting into the 90s there. everyone else is feeling the heat, that's for sure. glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us now. >> we have a first alert out not only for today, but for tomorrow as well. the humidity is just getting higher and higher. and you combine that with the high temperatures and you kind of get a dangerous combination.

and we also have poor air quality to go along with that. things are going to be changing. excessive heat warning goes until thursday at 6:00 for the urbanized areas, from trenton down to wilmington. we've had a few showers, especially in delaware cooling things down a little bit. and trying to get toward cape may, they are weakening as they move across delaware bay. flood advisory until 8:15. it's 90 degrees right now in philadelphia reading, northeast philly, it's cooler in delaware where the showers have been it's cooler at the jersey shore where the sea breeze is. the feels like temperature goes up as high as 99 in philadelphia within the last 15 minutes or so feeling like 90s over much of the area. as we go through the evening, temperature really is going to be dropping very much isolated showers are generally still in

delaware. a lot more storms around tomorrow. more on the timing on that in the 7-day in a few minutes. >> thank you. philadelphia is reviewing how it performs during large scale emergencies. emergency crews just wrapped up this drill. it comes two months before pope francis will draw millions into the city. drew smith is findsing out new information. live in south philadelphia. drew? >> this is a great place to practice, because it's one of the few subway stations that's going to be open. this one here at the end of the line, all of these will be closed. this parking lot will be filled with buses and cars you'll also see police officers and emergency workers. >> it sounds like it's going to be much more crazy than i thought. >> it's beginning to sink in the pope's visit to philly is going to bring a lot of people. and with that comes a whole new set of challenges for responding to emergencies. >> people would probably break

out in mass hysteria if something big were to happen. >> these workers are hoping to prevent any hiss tearial by holding simulation exercises like this one today. organizers thought about cancelling because of the extreme heat, but decided there would be no other ideal time. >> it's going to make us even more prepared for the papal visit. >> you can see there are a lot of fire trucks and ambulances needed to respond. so we asked a deputy mayor how they would get around when there are so many people here in areas closed off. there will likely be more to it than just that fence you may have heard about. >> we blocked the streets, we use either concrete or sometimes we use trash trucks in order to make sure the streets can be opened and closed rather quickly. >> the mayor's office couldn't answer all of our questions, but plans to release more information next week. >> we have some great state marter ins that are going to come in and help us. our emergency responders can do

our jobs. >> we also spoke to septa today. it has a plan for dealing with the major crowds. they say it's important to be flexible with those plans, there could be a weather issue or there could be too many people on the platform causing a safety problem. live in south philadelphia drew smith, nbc10 news. >> we have answers to many questions about the pope's visit to philly on the nbc10 app. other news now, an argument led to a shooting near the staples and delaware park racetrack. sky force 10 over the scene just before 10:00 this morning. the victim is another worker he was shot in the stomach and is it in stable condition right now. only nbc10 was there as the divers recover the gun. one person has now been charged. >> is this weather that turns the city row homes into literal ovens. the difference a free fan or a cooling center may make is the difference between life and death. that story coming up. next who's going to see

only made it worse. some places feeling like 100 degrees. doug shimell was out in philly today. people are looking for ways to stay cool in the potentially dangerous heat. >> trying to keep cool in this isn't an elective, it's survival. >> heat is something -- it's like a silent killer you don't realize just by being in it, that you possibly could have a stroke. >> a free fan could be the difference for keven campbell. >> i haven't had a fan in a year and a half. >> he was second in line at the fan giveaway. >> it gets very hard to breathe if you have a medical condition, it gets even worse. i'm a diabetic myself. >> it takes six blocks to get it to his unair conditioned house. it doesn't seem like much, but to kevin campbell, it's just enough. >> oh, boy.

>> we'll find out if you can qualify for a free fan giveaway call your local senior center. live in north philadelphia, doug shimell, nbc10 news. >> balancing act between staying safe in excessive heat and still enjoying a summer day. most kids in summer camps had to head inside early today. the excessive heat is just too dangerous for these campers to stay out all day. counselors and parents packed extra supplies to beat the heat and stayed in the shade while resting in a water park. >> sunscreen, i brought some gatorade, i bought him a new shirt to keep the sun off him. >> if we see them red in their face, we tell them to get a drink of water. >> on days like this the national weather service recommends limiting your outdoor activity plenty of water, and stay in the shade or air conditioning if you can. it's important to give the elderly and your pets a little extra attention at times like this.

that applies to tomorrow as well. it's going to feel every bit as hot tomorrow if not hotter that's why we have first alert out through tomorrow as well the high humidity getting even higher. poor air quality continuing as well. the temperature got up to 93 degrees today. it's 90 right now in philadelphia's southwest wind 13 miles an hour feels like 96. half hour ago it felt like 99. the temperature itself isn't going to change much but the thunderstorms on thursday are going to bring lower humidity in on friday. so it will not feel as bad on friday as it will tomorrow. we're near 90 in much of the area 92 in horsham and trenton right now, still 90 at quakertown reading 91 in coatesville, cooler in delaware because of the showers, cooler at the jersey shore because of

the sea breeze. feels like temperatures in the 90s unless you have those showers or the sea breeze. tomorrow you're going to see some of those triple digit numbers. take a look at that. 1:00 is the future weather computer showing several places in triple digits. even though the temperature might not goat any higher than today. at 4:00 starting to get some storms cooling things off to the west. it's not necessarily going to stay at triple figures, it's going to reach triple figures. you can see the showers in delaware weakening as they go across delaware bay and not quite getting into south jersey. now, tomorrow could see a couple showers earlier in the day. but with the heat and humidity this is what we're more concerned about, the line of storms developing with the weak front, in the afternoon, that's 3:00, it's just north and west philadelphia, just about to enter delaware and they could

have some strong gusty winds and a lot of lightning, and, of course, the downpours, behind that we have dryer air, less humid air, not necessarily cooler air but we'll take what we can get, you know? for tonight, early showers, you saw to the south they're already weakening, warm and humid tonight, in the 80s for most of the night, for most of the area. tomorrow, hot and humid, mainly afternoon thunderstorms in a place that gets rain early, could potentially get short of 90, but a lot of places in the 90s, humidity higher than today. it will feel like it's 100 in some areas, a little higher. it's less humid on friday the lower humidity lasts into saturday and sunday even though it stays hot, and as the eagles open for training am calp they're going to suffering for some hot weather along with the phillies, it gets even hotter early next week again. what does jonathan papelbon
