this is nbc news weather. and we have official word for today because of the dangerous heat. it's gripping our region and our threat for storms later today. here's a live look outside now at the boat house row in philadelphia. storms to our west have a look at it. chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz with the forecast. >> vai, it is steamy out there and eventually it will be stormy and for both reasons we have a first alert weather day out there. the oppressive heat high humidity and also some strong storms that will be developing

this afternoon. the threat tracker shows that there is moderate threat of any kind of localized flooding or lightning. the highest threat is for highs, strong gusty winds. a severe thunderstorm watch out already. this is the line of showers back in central pennsylvania that is approaching. this is the excessive heat warning today and tomorrow. once the line of showers comes through that's it for the dangerous heat at least for several days. 86 right now. wilmington, dover, millville, georgetown, a lot of places in the mid 80s. the humidity is high. it already feels like it's getting close to the mid 90s. we've got at least a couple more hours of heating. back to the north and west showers are going to come in before we get a chance to have that feels like temperature

triple digits. we have a lot of rain and showers and thunderstorms. and then it comes through the area so just about everybody is going to get rain. and then everybody is going to get significant relief from the high humidity. steamy and stormy forecast. the pictures. you see pictures and videos. you can upload them on the app. it's listed in critical condition. police are investigating whether street racing led to this wreck. it happened before midnight on

sand meyer lane on red meyer road in the bustleton section of the city. the accident investigation division in brewery town with new information about the victims. monique, what can you tell us? >> reporter: hey, vai. just a few moments ago i spoke to the commanding officer. he said this entire situation was tragic. he said they're investigating speeding or street racing. he says right now he is awaiting further information from a.i.d. investigators, but we've learned in the meantime police have removed the car. police are combing over the car behind closed doors up at the police garage at whitaker and mccallister. we've also learned that at midnight two females and one male were killed instantly when the 2007 acura tl slammed into this tree. police say the impact sliced the car the teens were riding in in half. one male is in extremely critical condition. he was taken initially to aria.

he's been transferred to jefferson now for surgery. another male is at einstein talking and somewhat disoriented. i asked the officer the ages of the teens involved i was told 16 to 20. all of them are from the northeast. the bustleton area as well. >> in our city you have a situation where you have young children, not young children but, you know, teenagers, high speed driving a car, thinking they're having a good time and it only takes a second to lose control of a vehicle and have a senseless loss of life. >> reporter: now investigators tell us there's no indication of impairment, alcohol or drugs, but they do say the car hit the curb, went airborne before landing on the tree. police are right now working to get video that shows a car driving by quickly with headlights on and they said they could have been in a situation of street racing but they're not for sure but they do know speed

was a factor and we've also been informed by police that they plan to have a press conference at 2:00. they need some time to get all of their information together before they share it with us. we'll be back at 11:30 with an update on the investigation for you. live now outside a.i.d. monique braxton, "nbc 10 news." indicted. long-time pennsylvania congressman is accused of bribery and stealing money. this all dates back to his failed race for philadelphia mayor in 2007. this was the breaking news we first brought you live as it happened yesterday on "nbc 10 news" at 11:00. the 29 count 85-page indictment alleges congressman fattah's misuse of congressional influence and misspending of taxpayer money and charitable donations. it includes information about a secret million campaign loan and taking a bribe from a lobbyist who wanted to be an ambassador.

federal agents started investigating him in 2013. he's accused of arranging and receiving what they say was an unlawful million dollar loan to support his 2007 campaign for mayor. after losing that race investigators say fattah paid back $400,000. when the lender wanted the rest authorities claim he stole federal grant funds to repay the loan. in another alleged scheme prosecutors say fattah hand delivered a note to president obama in order to secure an ambassadorship or other post for lobbyist. in exchange they say the lobbyist offered bribes. congressman fattah says he's done nothing wrong and vowed to remain in office and fight the charges. >> it's obviously going to be important to my constituents that this matter not be a distraction in terms of my work and i'm going to try not to have it be a distraction. >> reporter: now there are four other people indicted. bonnie bowser was the chief of staff in his philadelphia office.

she was in charge of the congressman's personal and campaign financial transactions. chief executive officer of educational advancement alliance a non-property that fattah founded, her the bert bead err man former deputy may wror and robert brand was the founder of company 2, a philadelphia-based public policy technology company. brand is also the spouse of a former fattah congressional staffer. so what happens next? well it's important to note that congressman fattah is not under arrest. he will have to appear in court but no date has yet been set. the congressman says he's confident he will be cleared of the charges. he's also vowed to stay in office. now the indictment also points to fattah's wife "nbc 10 news" 10 renee chenault-fattah being involved in part of the crimes. she is not criminally charged. renee is on leave from the station.

we have continuing coverage on nbc10.com and the "nbc 10" app. you can read the entire 85-page indictment and hear congressman fattah's statement from washington. meanwhile, police in camden county are investigating a deadly shooting. someone shot and killed a man at the arborwood condos on east lyndon avenue. this is in linden wall last night. authorities tell us they have no suspects or motive at this time. and an update on the breaking news we first brought you yesterday on "nbc 10 news" at 11:00 a.m. police arrested a jockey in the shooting at a delaware park racetrack. investigators say reuben rojas got into an argument with a trainer and pulled a gun and shot him. the trainer is listed in stable condition. sky force 10 was over the scene yesterday morning. an "nbc 10" camera was rolling as police happened to recover the gun in the nearby creek. a delaware county woman faced a judge overnight on charges that she killed a philadelphia boy in a hit-and-run crash more than

three months ago. sha nika mason of sharon hill turned herself in yesterday. she faces several charges including homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter. police say mason was the driver in the crash that killed latif wilson in april. he was just 4 years old. mason hit the boy in kingsessing after he ran out into the street. officers say she struck him a second time as she was leaving the scene. big news in the sports world. cole hamels is heading to the texas rangers. the phillies and rangers agreed on a deal that brings phillies six players and sends hamels to texas. the deal is not complete until physicals are complete and they've all passed. a big story. hamels is the phillies the most successful home grown pitcher since hall-of-famer robin roberts. he led them to the 2008 world series and earned the mvp honors in that process. he becomes the first pitcher in

major lead pitching to be traded after throwing a no hitter in his last start which he did in chicago last saturday. marshall harris is live for us from citizens bank park where it's time to say good-bye to hollywood. marshall welcome. we've sort of -- we've expected this news but it's still stunning to think hamels will no longer be a philly. tell me your reaction. >> like everyone else vai it makes you reflect on what he meant to this team. of course the best era of phillies baseball when they won five straight national league east championships. went to back-to-back world series winning the first of those. hamels was the mvp. he's one of the faces of that time with the phillies. slowly fading away. as you know. jimmy rollins was trading. look at the team now. only three players remain car loss ruiz chase utley and also one other guy when you look at ryan howard who are still with this team. their days may be numbered as well. so simply just one of the last

pieces of that 2008 world series championship team. the legacy that he leaves is one of the best pitchers along with the life of carlton and robert robertson in history. >> executive director of the hamels foundation this morning and he was telling us that the organization will continue with all philadelphia planned events. so that's pretty good news. you know, you and i have been to some of cole's events. in the time that you've been here, can you think of a player you know maybe chase, he and his wife with their foundation for animals, can you think of anybody that has been more active in the community than cole and his wife? >> i can think of guys that maybe have been equally active when you look at shane victorino, the work he did with boys and girls club when he was a philly. jimmy rollins and johari rollins when they were here. you're right, every year cole hamels and his wife heidi hamels put together so many events all benefitting education. she was the driving force behind a lot of work that the hamels

former ohio police officer faced a judge on charges he murdered a driver during a traffic stop. he appeared in court an hour ago. he is being led into the courtroom. he pleaded not guilty. a judge ordered him held on $1 million bond. he was a university of cincinnati police officer. he is accused of killing samuel dubos after pulling him over for not having a front license plate on his vehicle. dubos was shot in the head after giving him a bottle of alcohol when asked for his license.

the officer said dubos tried to run him over. body camera does not back up his version of events. following the indictment yesterday dozens of students at the university of cincinnati campus took part in a black lives matter rally. after the rally the crowd marched through the streets of cincinnati. more than 300 firefighters are battling a fast-moving fire in northern california. the so-called rocky fire has burned 3,000 acres in lake county. heavy brush and rugged terrain is making the job tougher for firefighters. 500 people have left their homes to escape the danger. two evacuation centers have been set up one for people and one for pets. a small microburst caused major storm damage in maine overnight. winds of 70 to 80 miles an hour knocked down these trees and

damaged about 100 roofs. no people were injured but some say the storm killed some chickens at one farm. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with chief meteorologist glen hurricane schwartz. >> and parts of our area could be seeing some strong gusty winds before the day is over. today is a first alert day. the heat humidity and also some strong storms are expected at least to parts of the area this afternoon. right now the high humidity is already up to 86. it feels like it's 93 degrees. so we were 93 degrees yesterday and 84. about the same today. about the same tomorrow. the humidity is going to be much lower tomorrow. while today feels like about 100, tomorrow will feel more like 92 or less.

it is 86 do grease in wrightstown and wilmington. 84 in blue bell. 83 in reading and lancaster. these are the first places that will see the temperature and humidity drop once that rain moves in. and getting a little bit of a sea breeze cape may harbor getting 76 degrees while inland areas are in the 80s. it feels like it's getting close to mid 90s. 95 in wilmington is the feels like temperature. just in another hour or so that number will be up near 100 degrees. the feels like temperatures, we have this orange color coming in which is cooler weather or at least less extreme weather, and that will continue at least at the shore areas as we go in through the weekend. the low humidity comes in.

84 degrees because of a land breeze for a good bit of tomorrow and then the sea breezes kick in for saturday and sunday keeping the temperatures kind of tolerable. the water temperature, 71. that's another great weekend at the shore. and another pretty great weekend in the pocono mountains, too. less humid on friday and some real nice weather on saturday and sunday. places to escape the heat that will be around here. we have some early showers across parts of the area but that's the line that we're going to be watching and it should intensify as we get more heat and humidity buildup during the afternoon. so into the early afternoon it's forming into a line. some areas getting some real downpours and some gusty winds and lightning and then that's coming through the philadelphia area right around 4:00 and just to the east new jersey by about 5:00 or so.

but you see this back edge here. so there's like a little bit of a stalling. system. so it's not just going to race through and you get 15 minutes of rain and then it's over with. that secondary area could keep the storms going at least in delaware and south jersey up until 9:00 or 10:00 tonight. so for the rest of the day today it's hot and humid. take the umbrellas with you because afternoon thunderstorms are coming through. highs are in the low 90s. remember, feeling like it's close to 100 degrees. tomorrow yeah it's hot. 92 but much less humid. not a little less humid, much less humid. you should notice that. and then by sat it's still, well, not too humid. it's starting to get a little bit more so by sunday. remember the phillies are coming back home tonight. going to be hot for baseball weather and really hot for football as the eagles start their training camp. and by tuesday when they have

meteorologist glen hurricane schwartz is here now with that forecast. glen. >> vai a lot of people looking forward to some of those storms coming in just to cool things off. today is a first alert weather day due to a combination of factors. we have the heat of course we get into the 90s quite a bit. we don't normally get humidity this high. the high gets up close to 100 degrees on the feels like reading and the strong storms also factor today. >> georgetown and so only now it will be into the 90s. not here. in lafayette, things a lot quieter there and any showers or storms. well they're going to hold off until probably about 8 or 9:00

tonight. the showers will be getting there sooner and the temperature drops and that's the end of the high feels like temperature. that line of showers in central pennsylvania and it's going to trigger some heavy rain locally heavy rain. if anything stalls there could be some localized flooding. we do expect lightning to intensify this afternoon. the biggest threat is the high winds that are going to be coming in. now as we go through the next few hours we expect this line to get closer and to get stronger with the additional heat of the day. and by 4:00 it's pretty much right along the i-95 area but behind it we're already starting to see some relief and then as we go towards dinner time and later on this evening it heads towards the shore. and then we can get a bit of a break in the humidity. we'll see how long that lasts

with the seven day in just a few minutes. we'll see you then glen. three people are dead including one teenage girl and two people are hurt after a devastating crash in northeast philadelphia. this happened late last night. police think street racing may be to blame. this happened just before midnight on sand meyer lane on the bustleton section of the city. monique braxton is live in brewery town. monique, you have new information about the victims? >> reporter: that's right, vai. i just spoke with the commanding officer. he told us right now his officers are up in the northeast part of the city notifying families that they have lost loved ones. we've seen a lot of activity here outside of a.i.d. police tell us that they have since removed the car from sand myer and red lion. police say right now they're combing over the car behind closed doors. we've also learned that at midnight last night two females and one male were killed instantly when the 2007 acura tl

investigators are heading to an island in the indian ocean to determine if a plane part found there is a piece of the missing malaysian flight mh 370. nbc's tom costello has an update. >> reporter: it's a huge break in potentially solving one of the world's biggest aviation mysteries. boeing investigators have looked at this video and the debris covered in seashells. their conclusion the piece of wreckage is a wing component from a boeing 777, what's called a flaperon and there is only one missing 777 anywhere in the world, malaysia 370. at a press conference overnight the deputy prime minister of australia called it a major lead. >> this is obviously a very significant development. this is the first real evidence that there's a possibility that a part of the aircraft may have been found. >> malaysia ya'an 370 contact ho

chi minh. >> it was march 17th when 239 people on board suddenly disappeared while on the red eye to beijing. the plane made a mysterious you turn flying off course and into the southern indian ocean, but why? ever since search teams have been focused on a remote stretch ocean 1200 miles off of australia, but the debris turned up closer to madagascar on the french island more than 4,000 miles from mh 370s last location south of vietnam and thousands of miles from the search zone off of australia. investigators have a single piece of wreckage but they're still missing the rest of the plane. >> the investigators are going to look very carefully at the component, what kind of damage it sustained at impact, how it left the rest of the airplane. >> reporter: oceanographers say much of the indian ocean moves in a counterclockwise motion. it's entirely possible that it could be off the coast of australia or anywhere in the

ocean ocean. >> it takes months or years for debris to go somewhere, say, from western australia, across the ocean base. >> we don't know where mh 370 went down. >> looks like a break and what happens today you can see. there was a new burst of energy. that was nbc's tom costello report. the u.s. coast guard will continue searching for two missing teen fishermen until tomorrow. perry cohen and austin stefanos vanished from a fishing trip. their boat capsized in a strong current on sunday. about 70 miles off shore and 170 miles north of where their trip initially started. >> the minnesota dentist who killed a famous protected lion in zimbabwe is in hiding this

morning. walter palmer sent a letter telling them they should find care elsewhere. some of his patients were among those protesting outside his office wednesday. the big game hunter reportedly paid $50,000 to track and kill cecil, the most famous animal in the national parks. palmer claims the hunt was legal. >> happening today, lawyers are set to argue that the singer can buy a hilltop convent overlooking hollywood. the order of nuns that owns a property sold it to a businesswoman that wants to turn it to buy the place. south jersey officials will soon take a big step in the recovery from last month's severe storms. local emergency management officers are set to meet next week with state and federal disaster recovery to apply for

internet security experts are concerned about the new version of windows. experts are worried about a new feature of windows 10 called wi-fi sense. unless you opt out of it windows 10 will allow your outlook, skype and possibly your facebook friends to access your wi-fi network. security experts say the feature could leave your wi-fi network vulnerable. well educational, inspirational and life changing. tomorrow evening a three-event series engaging men of color will kick off in philadelphia. it's called beyond expectations and it will give young men the opportunity to share powerful stories and learn from those who face unique challenges. dr. arthur evans is the commissioner of the department of behavioral health with the city of philadelphia. he is spearheading this initiative. he's here with d.j. and producer rich medino who is participating in beyond expectations.

thank you for being here. >> thank you. >> dr. evans let's start with you. the issue of race relations here especially important at this time. you've seen situations that especially with police that are happening, ferguson of course. yesterday, just yesterday at the university of cincinnati. you see what happened there. given all of that why do you think this is so important, this initiative? >> well so this event really is about mental wellness for african-american men. when you look at as you said what's going on in our communities, the daily stresses that people have what we know is that african-american men often don't have conversations about their own mental wellness. this is an opportunity working with people like d.j. rich medina and other well-known artists to tell their stories and engage in that. >> rich tell me how you got involved and why you got involved. >> i got involved because i got

a call from my manager saying that they have this initiative that's based on speaking to the mental health of black men in the united states and as a blackman as a father of a 7-year-old son to be blackman i find that it's a very unique platform and it's an honor to be called considering all the people of philadelphia who have a prominent voice in that community already. to be called is a fantastic opportunity so i jumped on it immediately. >> tell me what you both hope to accomplish with the initiative. >> well, a couple of things. one is that we want to change the conversation. i think one is to come at these issues from a strength-based perspective. one of the things i am really excited about is in addition to mr. medina we will have black thought there and championship boxer bernard hopkins. two other very prominent people. everyday men who are, as you said, have overcome adverse cities in their communities,

adverse cities in their lives and they're doing well and i think the message is that people can do well that our mental health is a part of our physical health and by raising these issues creating forums for these issues that communities can and people can really address them effectively. >> do you guys think that's just a black issue or could be a male issue that we're just not as in touch with our feelings and sort of reticent to share what our issues are with someone else? >> well it's really an issue for our entire community. i should say this is part of an overall strategy that the city city is taking to take a public health approach to the issue of mental health. the reality is that all communities have trouble sometimes talking about how we're doing from a mental standpoint and -- but we do know that for men, i'm a man, i know that sometimes, you know people are saying how are you doing? people say, i'm doing okay

got some hot weather in store for this home stand. 86 degrees now. feels like 93. the humidity is the highest it's been so far this week. and we are in the low to mid 80s right now, which is above average for this time of the day. the average high is 87 in philadelphia and we're going to be passing that within the next hour. we're getting a bit of relief right at the beaches. actually marina. 80 degrees with the southwest wind. well it's close to 90 degrees inland. it feels like it's in the mid 90s in wilmington already. there are going to be some triple dij get numbers out there before the day is over. and look at that this is one of our computer models showing by 2:00 the feels like temperature is close to 100 degrees, 101 in a couple of spots. not quite as bad as the shore or in the poconos and then as the

showers and storms comes in those temperatures go down. the feels like temperature goes down. and watch what happens as we go into tomorrow, okay? feels like the 60s in the morning and instead of the 90s and near 100, we're feeling like mid to upper 80s tomorrow. so that is a dramatic change from what we have seen and you'll notice that tomorrow. we had a couple of showers earlier. this is the line of showers, even a couple of storms starting to develop, getting close to harrisburg. they should intensify. as you go through the afternoon it knocks the temperature down. pots down 97. 90 degrees in philly. once the temperature goes down it's not going back up into the 90s. 3:00, still just to the north and west of philly through parts of montgomery county and bucks county. by 4:00 it's right along the

area of i-95 from trenton down to wilmington as we continue to see clearing back to the west. now temperature is going back up at reading. 89 degrees by 4:00 but the humidity will be lower by then. then the line of storms approaches the jersey shore by 6:00, 7:00 and then there's this little secondary area they're going to be watching that could keep the rain threat in a little bit longer this evening. so the threat is definitely there for this afternoon and possibly in some areas for this evening. hot and humid this afternoon. with those afternoon storms we were just showing you, high temperatures in the low 90s. the temperature will go down pretty quickly once that rain starts. and then the humidity goes down quickly overnight. you should notice that difference by the time you get up in the morning and it's not going to be as steamy in the afternoon. temperature may vary. we'll get to 90 or a little above but it's not going to feel

nearly as hot as today. then saturday another hot day. humidity still tolerable. sunday starting to get a little bit more humid. eagles starting training camp. not exactly football weather. and then it gets hot and more humid again early next week. iran keeps their nuclear facilities. military sites can go uninspected. restrictions end after 10 years. then iran could build a nuclear weapon in two months. iran has violated 20 international agreements and is the leading state sponsor of terrorism.

on facebook twitter, nbc10.com. you can follow the weather in lots of different ways. this is one of the afternoons to do that. hot and steamy this afternoon with the storms coming in tomorrow, a big break from the humidity. we're not dropping the temperature a whole lot but we are going to be dropping the humidity quite a bit and so while today is going to feel like 100, tomorrow's 92. it will feel no higher than 92 maybe even down to like 90. that's a ten degree improvement tomorrow in the way it feels even though those numbers are exactly the same on the seven day. so that's why we tell you all of that stuff. and the 90s continue all the way through the week end. the humidity won't really build up back again until early next week and then we'll be complaining about the humidity again and hoping for some rain to cool us off. >> yeah you saw the eagles players check in saturday. their first practice is on sunday. still going to be warm out
