an escaped prisoner on the lose in pennsylvania. they think he murdered a woman while on the man. the manhunt under way right now. a papal mass warning. what septa says you need to know to avoid becoming a victim. we begin tonight with a grave disgrace. the search is on for the vandal who toppled more than 100 tombstones as a jewish cemetery in philadelphia. george spencer reports some of the graves date back more than a century. >> reporter: the groundskeeper knows this cemetery like the

back of his hand. for 44 years now the scottish native has taken an early morning stroll here. today, he noticed this. headstones mysteriously toppled. >> the thought went through my mind, this is a disgrace for somebody to do shgomething like this. >> reporter: they are scattered across the 12 acres. as he walked, he saw more and more. >> along the back up through the middle here. on the left-hand side of the graveyard. >> reporter: he counted 124 grave sites disrupted. no graffiti. no other markings just headstones pushed off their base. >> i don't know who would do it. people on drugs? were they drunk? i don't know. you wouldn't have been in your right mind i don't think to do something like this. >> reporter: the cemetery has some graves dating back 160 years. with only a handful of new burials each year this cemetery is mostly visited by passersby

using it as a shortcut. crime like this is basically unheard of. >> never any vandalism here until last night. the first this has happened in 25 years. >> reporter: now repairs will require machinery to lift the heavy headstones and funding that may not be available. gibson did file a police report but says the evidence is really pretty limited. this cemetery does not have surveillance cameras. he says such cameras had never before been needed. in frankford, george spencer, nbc 10 news. to a developing story. an escaped inmate in pennsylvania is now a murder suspect. he killed a woman after walking away from a work release program this morning. the search is on for him. he was last seen in armstrong county near pittsburgh. that's where the sheriff says he walked away from the jail while delivering meals. hours later, a woman was found dead in a home near the jail.

investigators believe he killed her and that the two knew each other. he was in jail for violating probation on a drug charge and there were no violent crimes on his record. police are looking for a missing truck in connection with the murder and escape. it's a maroon chevy silverado with an extended cab. it has pennsylvania tags. police say the missing inmate is considered armed and dangerous. to our weather and the storms have moved out. nbc 10 in center city as the rain fell earlier today. some people with makeshift umbrellas there. the rain came down hard here in trenton. a viewer sending this. the storms will help the humidity even though we are in a heat wave. sheena? >> so we are in the clear from the rain. but you are right we did hit an official heat wave today. that's three days of 90 degree

temperatures or higher in a row. that's the heat wave. today we hit 91. tomorrow, we're not going to be out of the 90s, not even saturday. temperatures will be staying in the low 90s. we will stay above the average high of 87. the dry air is moving in. regardless of the humidity lowering tomorrow, which will make it feel more comfortable, it will still be hot but a bshit more tolerable. temperatures mid 70s. more comfortable, sunshine low humidity. by 10:00, low 80s. the humidity will stay low through the afternoon. by noon tomorrow in the mid 80s. we expect to get into the 90s again. we will take a closer look at how long the low humidity will last and how hot your weekend will be. that's straight ahead. >> all right, sheena. we learned the identities of three young people when their car slammed into a tree so hard the car split in two.

one of the victimless wass was a 17-year-old girl. randy is live at the accident investigation division. randy, police still searching for another car seen speeding by right? >> reporter: police. can't know for sure right now at least whether these two cars were actually racing or just speeding right next to each other. they do tell us both were going extremely fast. tonight, we have learned the identity of the three young people killed in this accident. the black acura was packed with five young people. >> any car going that fast isn't going to make the turn. >> reporter: their speed topped 75 miles per hour and impact. >> went out of control and hit a tree. >> reporter: detectives say they obtained video showing another car that appears to be racing the akcura just before the accident. a 17 was killed on impact. >> if the other car was to come

forward, it would help the families with closure. >> reporter: her uncle tells nbc 10, she was a senior at george washington high school. >> 17-year-old girl. just enjoyed everything she did. >> reporter: the area around the crash is a known street racing strip. a quick search on youtube shows dozens of videos shot around philadelphia showing fast cars racing down industrial road. detectives now want to talk to the people inside that other car. they don't have a good description. they're asking the driver to come forward. >> people in the other car, we want to talk to them. they have a responsibility to give us information what they saw. >> reporter: we have learned the identities of the two other victims. another 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man from medford, new jersey. we're told one other person remains hospitalized in critical

condition. police are hoping dna evidence and information from neighbors may lead to an arrest in the kidnapping and beating of a 5-year-old girl. the mother says she noticed her daughter missing around 7:00 tuesday morning. police say a man climbed through an alleyway window of the family's home in north philadelphia forced the girl outside and then beat her. her mother found her daughter barely conscious. >> a coward. cowards do cowardly things. for to you call yourself a man and do such unspeakable acts your day in court is coming. you are going to be held accountable. turn yourself in. >> police did question one man but let him go. police say they nabbed a bank robber who tried to get away in a taxi. police say the thief hit up a bank this afternoon. the robber didn't count on a traffic jam in the parking lot. he ran out of the taxi but

officers caught him. officers found the money from the robbery in the cab. philadelphia congressman shacha k chak chaka fattah was indicted today. he mentioned he is not letting the indictment distract him from his work as a congressman. >> we're not distracted. i'm going to do my work. we're going to be -- i've had the most -- we got so much done. we helped so many people that it would be a crime for me to stop doing it. >> in the indictment released yesterday, he is accused of misusing his congressional influence, misspending taxpayer money and charitable donations. he is accused of accepting a secret million dollar campaign loan and taking a bribe from a lobbyist who wanted to be an ambassador.

renee is telling her side of the story in a letter forwarded to nbc 10. the anchor was referenced in the criminal complaint against her husband. she's labeled as person e and an affiliate of the fattah enterprise in the indictment. they allege she and her husband took part in a scheme to sell her car in order to pay closing costs on a vacation home. she says she has done nothing wrong and nbc 10's deanna dur ran tee reports. >> reporter: they say they used money to help secure a mortgage on this poconos vacation home. he describe she says the car was her second car. she sold it to a family friend but for several reasons the car remained at their home. the feds say the friend is a lobbyist and former finance director during fattah's 2007 campaign run for mayor. they say the sale was a bribe to fattah in order to get the girlfriend's a job and him

considered for a federal appointment. she claim he continued to register the car and kept it in her garage for more than 20 months after the sale occurred. she denyied it was illegal and explains why the car remains at her home. the car stayed at our house. we have three garages. the first lived in an apartment. i continued with ensuring it since it was in our garage and wanted nothing to happen. i had it towed to be serviced because i wanted it to be in good shape for the friend. it has remained undriven in our garage for three years now because of advice of counsel we were instructed to do nothing with the car. the wife of the congressman also says she knows this case isn't going away any time soon. in her letter, she says that the proceeds from the car sale were used in the process of buying that poconos home. she says the sale of the car was triggered by a change in the law and a reserve that was required by her mortgage company. she has not been charged with a crime and her husband denies anything wrongdoing.

a warning ahead of the papal visit. someone put an ad on craigslist claiming to be preapproved for septa passes. septa says the offer isn't real. keith jones is live at 30th street station tonight. the real passes are a hot ticket. >> reporter: yes they are. we tried to get ahold of the scammer tonight. we talked to righters here. they are not surprised a scammer would try to prey on the pope. 350,000 passes for two days. this is one of many who plans to enter septa's lottery monday. >> i need the ticket. >> reporter: septa tells us they aren't available yet. how did this ad pop up

river. >> everybody leaves it alone. take a look from a distance. it's a precious creature. take care of our wild life. >> while unusual, manatee sightings in new jersey are not unprecedented. when the weather starts getting colder, most turn around on their own and head south. a sewage problem has a section of beach closed in ocean city. it made it into a storm drain. until crews can test water samples, the 6th and 7th street beaches are off limits to swim swimmer swimmers. two other shore beaches are back open after getting the all clear. health officials initially closed the north carolina avenue and pennsylvania avenue swimming areas because bacteria levels exceeded water quality standards. water samples taken yesterday came back today at acceptable levels. authorities believe the elevated levels in the earlier tests were the result of heavy rains sunday

night. storm drainpipe is between the two beaches. we're dry now. the storms have cleared out. before we saw the storms today, we got to 91 degrees. it was hot and humid. we officially hit a heat wave. so that's going to stick around in the forecast too, the 90 degree temperatures continue. we're going to see less humidity tomorrow along with that. it's not going to feel sticky and hot. it will feel dry and hot. the 90 degree temperatures last all the way through the weekend. as far as tomorrow morning is concerned for your morning commute, it's going to feel pleasant out there compared to what we have seen. areas north and west around 8:00, 9:00 in the morning, low 70s, less humidity. new jersey and delaware temperatures about the mid to low 70s. right now we're seeing dry conditions. most of the cloud cover in south

jer jer jersey and delaware. the rain is to the south. it's clearing out. we're starting to get the dry air moving in. that will keep moving in as we go overnight tonight. a cold front is moving through. it's not going to lower the temperatures. it's going to drop the humidity with the dry air mass right behind it. we don't have rain in the forecast for quite a while after today. a dry stretch and also a hot stretch of weather. here is future weather overnight tonight. we stay dry. we could sierras see arir areas of patchy fog. through the afternoon, humidity stays low. skies stay sunny. it will be nice. looking at the low 90s. across the weekend, temperatures in the 90s. we are talking about a dry but hot saturday and sunday. if you are heading to the shore, tomorrow less humid. temperatures in the mid 80s saturday and sunday. temperatures right around 80 degrees and we expect to stay dry. tonight though, the humidity continues dropping overnight

tonight. we could sierraee areas of fog developing. through the afternoon tomorrow sunny and hot and dry. humidity stays low all the way through the afternoon. temperatures still stay in the low 90s. at least it will feel more comfortable compared to what we have seen for the last several days. our heat wave is going to continue. this is an extended heat wave. there you see it 90 degree temperatures all the way through the weekend, into next week. for the eagles on sunday it's a hot one, even on tuesday, but that one will come with thunderstorms. you can see the hot, dry weather is going to continue. our next chance of storms won't be until about tuesday. we are going to keep our eye on the heat until then. at least you can enjoy the low humidity. that's what makes it feel oppressive to many people. tomorrow, not so much. >> weird to see the eagles logo with 91 95. it's that time of year. >> we're used to seeing it with cold weather.
