meanwhile, friends and family can't believe that. they say she was so well liked in this area and they have been adding to a growing memorial here all day. it was a sleepless night for friends and family of stephanie dzkowski, especially the ones who went inside her bedroom and saw her body. >> my whole insides were shaking, scared. a lot of blood. >> reporter: witnesses say dzkowski's boyfriend went to the store and left the door open. >> seeing her look like that is one reason why i can't sleep because that's all i see every time i close my eyes. >> reporter: neighbors heard a bang a single gunshot. then they saw a man running from the scene. police are looking at this surveillance video that nbc 10 tracked down at a nearby convenience store. you can see a man sprinting down aramingo avenue. >> she was a great mom. baby was always with her. always. >> reporter: dzkowski recently became a dentist's assistant and planned to move to a new home. her family says she had no enemies. now they feel most badly for her daughter who had to see her mother covered in blood.

>> i don't even know. it's a shame because she's only 2 years old. >> reporter: that daughter was not hurt and is now with family. we are told nothing was taken from the home. we are told dzkowski lived here most of her life. in fact most of the neighbors here consider her a part of their family. they plan to come out here stand together and remember this young mother dead at the age of 22. i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. philadelphia police aggressively looking for surveillance video and any witnesses to come forward. as they search for the man who kidnapped and beat a 5-year-old girl. the girl's mother says she noticed her daughter missing on tuesday morning. police say a man climbed through an alleyway window at the family's north philadelphia home then forced the girl outside and beat her. the mother found the child barely conscious in the backyard. she's still in the hospital tonight recovering from severe injuries to her face. new at 6:00 a trial date is

set for the first lawsuit stemming from a 2012 train derailment in south jersey. you might have remembered this one. on september 8th a federal judge in camden will hear the case about the derailment in paulsboro, gloucester county. several train cars operated by conrail went off the tracks spilling vinyl chloride a gas that has been linked to respiratory problems, dizzyiness and death. several first responders sued conrail claiming they weren't warned about the possible health risks. this is the number one opportunity i have been able to be given in playing baseball and especially to play for the historical city of philadelphia. you know some of the best memories i have ever had. >> that's official now. cole hamels traded to the texas rangers less than a week after throwing that no-hitter. today, he thanked fans in the city of philadelphia, saying it was an honor to play. he mentioned the world series

parade, by the way, down broad street as one of those favorite memories of his. we'll have more on his interview ahead in sports. a former philadelphia police officer charged with stealing money during a sting operation is found guilty on all charges today. investigators say gerald gibson was on duty as an narcotics officer when he stole the money in 2013. a judge originally declared a mistrial in the case last october. gibson is the former son-in-law of former pennsylvania governor tom corbett. congress is now beginning its summer break meaning indicted congressman chaka fattah could be back in philadelphia at any time. congressman fattah is scheduled to appear in havertown on monday. in an indictment the congressman is accused of misusing his congressional influence, stealing taxpayer money and charitable donations. he is accused of accepting a secret $1 million campaign loan and taking a bribe from a

lobbyist who wanted to be an ambassador. fattah denies the charges. congressman fattah is married to nbc 10 news anchor renee chenault-fattah. renee is referenced in the criminal complaint against her husband. she is labeled as person e and an affiliate of the fattah enterprise. they say they took part in a scheme to allegedly sell a car in order to pay closing costs on a vacation home. she is not charged and denies any wrongdoing. renee is on leave from nbc 10. to this now. dr. jill biden spent the morning at a prison in delaware today. her message was in line with president obama's push to reduce sentences for non-violent offenders. nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong sat down with a woman whose life took a turn when she was only 11 years old. >> reporter: amanda left her drug-addicted parents when she was 11. she was soon sold into a life of prostitution and drugs and has

been in and out of prison. she is now halfway through a ten year sentence in delaware. she says she has hit the reset button on her life. >> [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: it's a series of motivational talks all over the world that get uploaded to a central site. it's rare to hold one inside a prison. >> it's not something i ever thought i would be doing but it's pretty amazing. >> reporter: it's rare to have the second lady of the united states sitting among and interacting with the inmates. the theme is redemption and second chances. president obama recently said it's time to lower some minimum sentences for non-violent felonies basically less incarceration, more rehabilitation type mind shift. the head of delaware corrections says the women in this particular crowd are the inmates who have decided to use prison as a safe sanctuary. they are trying to get their lives back together. >> they have changed, they accept responsibility for what they've done but they want to make it right. they want to get out there and

have that second chance. >> reporter: in delaware and around the country, 70% of people who get released from prison eventually end up back in. they go back to their old crowds and habits. the thinking is this. if you can give them more coping and job skills maybe they can change the script on their life and become productive members of society. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. speaking out against the iran nuclear deal. today, pennsylvania senator pat toomey announced he will vote against it. he says it's not only jeopardizing america's security but also israel's. the senator made his announcement at the jewish federation of greater philadelphia in center city. the deal would limit iran's nuclear capabilities in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. right now congress is in the middle of a 60 day review of the agreement. senator toomey said he believes it lets the american people down. >> this deal fails to meet the minimum criteria we need to remove sanctions on this regime and rather than enhancing

america's national security interest, in fact this deal threatens it. >> many american jrues areews are lobbying for a no vote. today joe sestak announced he cautiously supports the iran deal. the former congressman said quote, i am supportive of the nuclear agreement with iran if for no other reason than iran could have bomb grade material for a nuclear weapon within 30 days of today. this agreement sets back that clock for at least one year, if not 15 years. closer to home this berks county man is accused of driving into a barricade at the u.s. capitol building in washington, d.c. he says he hit the barricade intentionally this morning. authorities say he appeared imbalanced. he is from reading. he says he was upset over a clothing patent. investigators found nothing suspicious in his car. a delaware woman, a mom, is

accused of whipping her child with an extension cord. this right here is nivia brown of dover. police tell nbc 10 she's accused of using that cord to hit her 6-year-old daughter because the daughter didn't listen. a family member called social services earlier this week. dover police arrested her. this next story might creep you out. a school in central pennsylvania is closed now because of an infestation of spiders. pest control found brown recluse spiders in a school library in mercersburg, franklin county. crews are spraying pesticides right now. bites from these spiders are usually painless but can produce ulcers. we have had relief from the humidity today but that doesn't mean the heat's going away. plus the weekend forecast from the poconos to the shore. i feel like i'm going to wear the responsibility well. i'm going to be really really great at what i'm going to be doing. i can't wait to start fighting

it's a first for the city of chester. three history-making women became firefighters today. nbc 10's rosemary connors has their story. >> reporter: amid the typical hugs and kisses with something new at today's firefighter graduation in chester. three women, cadets who are now the first female firefighters in the city's history. >> i think that it's just time. >> reporter: they will be sworn in at a later date but amy deknight who won the top academic prize in the class of '16 says she's ready to go. >> i'm nervous but excited. >> reporter: lasandra capo took the test because she was ready to move on as a chester housing police officer. but she still wanted to help others. >> i know that it wasn't going to be easy. i just pushed myself through. >> reporter: the women say they were treated the same as male cadets during the grueling

training. >> they did everything the same. tried their hardest like everyone else. >> the guys have all been great. they have really taken to having women in the class. they all looked out for us. honestly, i have gained so many brothers that i never had before. >> it makes you realize how strong you are. >> reporter: she will have no problem doing what used to be thought of as a mans job says donae duncan. >> definitely it's strong for a woman to be able to come into a male dominant field and conquer. that's what we did. >> if our youngsters don't see female firefighters if they don't see african-american firefighters, or latino firefighters or italian firefighters how do they know that it's possible for them to do and become a firefighter also? >> reporter: the fire commissioner james johnson says there's another important reason for having men and women working side by side. >> it will help train us to make us better men and better firefighters. in the lehigh valley a

philadelphia family is accused of sneaking into dorney park outside allentown. park officials say they caught up with the bostick family inside the park wednesday night, saying the group told workers their tickets were being held inside by another group. the police say once inside the family ran off to avoid paying almost $300 for tickets. now bostick is charged with theft by deception. four straight days of 90 degree temperatures. the hot weather isn't going anywhere any time soon. tariq rasheed takes frequent breaks inside his justice center park lunch truck in camden. kids cooling off at the north camden community center had extra sets of eyes watching today. for good reason. the center added lifeguards during this week's heat wave. we can't forget of course about our furry friends like that little guy there. keep them in shaded areas if they're outside or better yet, bring them inside with you in the air conditioning and give them plenty of water.

>> if you have an animal in your yard it's receiving sunlight all day long if they're locked up in the car they will overheat. they will die. >> the new jersey spca says it responds to at least 120 animal heat related cases each week. some dogs were locked in cars or chained up with no water. some local hospitals have seen a boost in emergency room visits. doctors say of course it's directly linked to our soaring temperatures. alan bruno is a registered nurse at delaware county memorial hospital in upper darby and says as temperatures soar, so do the number of people needing medical attention. right now the boost is moderate. that could change with the mercury expected to go even higher next week. >> they are becoming dizzy, light-headed and having a little bit of nausea. >> doctors say asthma and other breathing disorders are sending many people to the hospital. they are also seeing moderate to severe cases of heat exhaustion.

we have good news for beach goers at the jersey shore. two beaches in ocean city are back open today. the sixth and seventh street beaches were off-limits to swimmers yesterday as a precaution. health officials say a small amount of sewage made it into a storm drain. the new water samples taken late yesterday showed no more problems. further south down the shore, what a great day to be at the beach. less humidity and warm temperatures. you're taking a live look at cape may. people still enjoying the weather right now. there is great weather continuing even into the weekend. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us with the first alert forecast. >> yeah we have pretty nice timing here. we have had timing much of the summer. a lot of good weekends. >> great weekends. cape may, we showed that picture, you love it down there. it's a perfect time of year to be down there. >> when you have the right weather conditions especially with the sea breeze we will see more of that on sunday than on

saturday. it will be kind of warm for a lot of people. at least the humidity is down and the humidity is down in the pocono mountains, too. this is the camel beach wave pool. a lot of folks in there. one thing with the low humidity is that when you get out of the water, you cool off that much faster. keep the towels nearby if you head into the pools this weekend. the humidity dropped really nicely today. we've got that break. even though the heat continues, the lower humidity makes a big difference. the weekend from the shore to the poconos looking pretty good. we've got a westerly wind bringing in the drier air. the humidity has dropped dramatically today. 89 degrees now, the humidity only 30%. with the lower humidity it feels like 89. yesterday it was almost 99. even though the actual high temperature is very close to yesterday, it felt a whole lot different.

91 yesterday, 90 today. we will be in that ballpark the next couple of days over the weekend. then on monday it goes back up and the humidity goes back up too. we're in the mid 80s to near 90 degrees across much of the area. a little cooler in the poconos. at the shore, it's still pretty warm in most places because of that offshore wind that west wind. it's in the 80s right at the beaches and it will be that way tomorrow as well. but things will shift a bit for sunday. so tomorrow should be the warmest day at the shore with that west wind kind of hot for a lot of folks. then on sunday the sea breeze kicks in earlier so it will not be quite as warm. it will be pretty nice and comfortable at the poconos both saturday and sunday. mix of sun and clouds especially on saturday. not many clouds on the satellite picture not only around here but even back into the mid west even back into the plains

states, there's not much going on. high pressure, big area of high pressure way back to the west. that's keeping things dry all the way to the east coast. until this thing moves offshore it's going to stay dry and comfortable. there we go through sunday afternoon. there's no way to get any significant moisture in here until this moves offshore and that would be on monday. that's when the heat builds up. that's when the humidity builds up again. so yeah it will be hot over the weekend. still tolerable humidity. then watch what happens next week. that hot air echoes off the map by the middle of the week. we are going to be seeing some major relief not only in the humidity department but also in the heat. clear and comfortable tonight, 72 for the low in philadelphia 62 north and west. lot of sunshine tomorrow. not too humid, even though it's likely to be 90 degrees again. the seven-day forecast another hot day on sunday but the heat

and humidity really return on monday. it might feel like it's close to 100. then on tuesday, still pretty hot but we really cool down by the middle of the week with some showers and storms returning. the summer marks a major anniversary for a cape may county company f you have ever been to the jersey shore, you probably see them in action. we're talking about banner planes. these are owned by paramount air service in middle township. it's the nation's oldest and largest aerial advertising business. this year the company is celebrating its 70th anniversary. the 12 vintage planes pull banners over the ocean from cape may all the way to sandy hook. they are designed to catch the eyes of beach goers on the sand below. >> we're just part of the jersey shore experience and have been for seven decades. thanks to my parents, who started it. >> the company was started in

he spent his entire career in a phillies uniform and met with the media today understandably with mixed emotions. here's a look through the years. 18 years old when he was drafted 17th overall in 2002. three time all-star nlcs and world series mvp in 2008. going to be hard to forget his grand finale for the phils, a no-hitter against the cubs last saturday. hamels becomes the first player in major league baseball history to be traded in season after throwing a no-no. >> you always start your games off trying to throw a no-hitter. it's just never really happened until now. being able to do that in the phillies uniform will mean an immense amount of joy and the memories there will be -- they are going to last forever. we will always have this jersey in my house and i will be able to see and keep that memory. >> the phillies with another trade before today's 4:00 p.m. deadline. general manager ruben amaro
