nbc 10 news starts now. >> right now at 6:00 a 10-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after getting shot at a park in chester, delaware county and police say the 17-year-old shooter is in custody. good evening, investigators tell us the teen gunman was chasing three young kids around veterans memorial park firing shots at them. monique braxton is live at the medical center and, monique, the victim is expected to be okay? >> reporter: that's right, denise he's in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his stomach. in the meantime parents who were enjoying the pool and the park tell us they're frustrated and fed up. >> it's a shame you can't even

bring your kids out on a nice summer day, enjoy the day, and without somebody shooting it's a mess. >> reporter: we saw parents and their children rushing away from memorial park pool shortly after the shooting. investigators tell us a 17-year-old facing three younger children fired shots at them. >> it was surreal. >> reporter: chster park employee dwayne lee talked to us exclusively telling us he watched in awe and then helped police catch the teen gunman. >> i seen him run through here up the hill onto the sidewalk stopped, start firing and walking as he was firing. >> reporter: and you were shocked that he was so young? >> yes. >> reporter: police say the gun they took from the young shooter is one of 85 illegal guns confiscated this year. >> who knows where these kids are getting it from. some adult obviously or someone irresponsible assisted this young man getting a gun. >> reporter: people we spoke with wanted a visible police presence at the park during the

hot summer days. >> we pay your salaries and we do as you ask and call you when things aren't looking right, help us as parents, citizens period, whether we're citizens or not. these children they want to live. >> reporter: when i asked police about a motive they said there had been an argument in a neighboring community. >> a 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after a driver hit him and just kept going. the teen was crossing west minister avenue in west philadelphia around 1:30 this morning. police say a gold buick hit him and then took off. about an hour later officers stopped a similar vehicle for reckless driving and found it had heavy windshield damage. the driver was arrested for driving under the influence and more charges are expected. the body of a man who jumped into a berks county quarry was recovered today. rescue crews were called to the climbing quarry in robinson township last night for a

possible drowning. investigators say a man in his 20s was at the quarry with a friend and jumped off a 100-foot tall cliff right into the water. he did not resurface and his friend went in to help. searchers found his body today. just in to nbc 10 a personal hit by a train at the levittown train has been identified as an emt from bucks county rescue squad george redner iii killed on the tracks. he was about to start classes at the philadelphia fire academy. his fellow rescue squad members say they're grieving tonight. august is here and still no sign of relief from the heat. taking a live look at cape may where the peach has been crowdbeach has been crowded today, but the real question on everyone's mind is are we still on the heat wave? we begin with team coverage with brittany ship did we hit the

90-degree mark today? >> we did. the heat wave will continue even as we head into tomorrow. it started way back last week. today our temperatures did reach 90 degrees and as we head into tomorrow we'll see a high of 90 degrees as well a little bit above average for us. our average for this time of year is 87 degrees so we've dropped down a few degrees of our official high of 90 degrees today, your current temperature 83, 83 degrees current in allentown and temperatures in the poconos a lot cooler in the mid-70s. we're at 86 in wildwood and temperatures in dover right now at 86 degrees. even along the shore here the atlantic city airport we're at 88 so it's very warm right along the shore. we have a chance tonight for a few little stray showers but for the most part it will stay mild. 78 degrees by 11:00 p.m. coming up i'm tracking the end of the heat wave and when the storms will return and when with the humidity will make its return as well. denise? >> thank you. we continue the team coverage with drew smith who is live in

camden. drew, what are people there doing to stay cool this weekend? >> reporter: it's all about staying hydrated. a lot of people are drinking water and they're also finding spots in the shade and we're here at a neighbor block party. a lot of kids have been stopping by to play basketball but the officers are keeping on the kids because of the extreme heat. it's a way to develop positive ways with young kids and fun is continuing in the high temperatures this afternoon and some of these kids had been stuck inside for days since the heat wave began so this is a good supervised way to get out. it's not just the kids feeling the scorching temperatures the officers have to be out here in uniform and they've been carrying a lot of quemt forfof equipment for this event. >> the heat's been crazy. we had to load the stuff up pick up bring it out here drop it off, go to another location of the city and pick it up and drop it off, but at the end of

jersey and delaware have voted to go on strike if necessary. the communications workers of america union is rejecting demands that workers increase their health care contributions and make concessions on pensions. if there is a strike verizon says it expects the impact on customers to be min pal. in philadelphia police are looking for the person who shot and killed a woman sitting in an suv early this morning. investigators say the 32-year-old woman was found in a driver's seat with gunshot wounds to the head and body. it happened at coral and rush streets in kensington just before 5:30 this morning. bullets also shattered the back passenger window. police are investigating another deadly shooting. this one in the point breeze neighborhood. police tell us the 30-year-old victim was shot four times on the 1900 block of mountain street. he was found on the ground between two cars. neighbors in port richmond are on edge while the killer of a young mother remains at large. police are looking at this

surveillance video showing the suspected gunman running from the scene. it was spotted just -- or he was spotted, rather just moments after witnesses heard shots fired from inside the victim's home. 22-year-old stephanie dekoski was shot and killed late thursday night right in front of her baby. >> so scary, you don't know. got to make sure the doors are locked now. >> police say they discovered the body after her boyfriend returned home from the corner store. a final farewell to bobbi kristina brown. friends and family gathered for the funeral of the late whitney houston's daughter today. we'll tell you some of the big names that came out to say good-bye. plus no more fire deaths. nbc10 was there as the american red cross and firefighters went door to door with smoke detectors for their new campaign. why they say they're seeing success in their efforts.

friends and family said good-bye today to bobbi kristina brown. her funeral was held in suburban atlanta. grammy winning singer monica was there and so was the mayor of atlanta. she died in hospice care on july 26th six months after she was found unconscious in a bathtub. the 22-year-old was the only child of the bobby brown and the late whitney houston. a wing suspected to be from the missing malaysia airlines flight 370 is at a military facility. it arrived at the site this afternoon. a military unit that specializes in analysis of aviation wreckage will inspect it. the debris is believed to be from a boeing 777. it was discovered this week on the remote indian ocean island of reunion. the examination will begin wednesday. coming up the phillies are

nbc10 was there as they went door to door as they handed out smoke alarms to make sure people are prepared for the worst. >> reporter: the steady stream of city officials entered several row homes today in a continued effort to end fire fatalities. >> you have a 50% chance of living if you have a working smoke alarm if you have a fire. >> reporter: the fire commissioner said of the 32 fatal fires last year 22 happened at homes without working smoke detectors so he and others pounding the pavement early to spread the word and warning about the need to have this piece of technology in working order. a resident cheryl july. >> you might test the button to see if it's working but it's something that you don't -- you just take it for granted that it's going to work. >> reporter: to remove the guesswork the personnel canvassed gray's avenue and surrounding streets. they installed ten-year lithium battery detectors while red cross volunteers go over the importance of discussing an

served as emcee. >> three, two, one! go phillies! >> a major league work of art was officially unveiled today dedicated to the philadelphia phillies, the mural at 24th and walnut street towers eight stories high. it features more than 30 prominent players and icons and it depicts historic moments from the team's history including the 1980 and 2008 world series championships. well it's the dog days of summer. and we mean that literally at one center city store. the store hosted an adoption event and there were dogs and cats and even a rabbit trying to find new homes. a pair of designers from bucks county who feature animals on their pillows and totes also autographed items for customer. nbc10 and telemundo 2 are

to end the weekend. a closer look at philadelphia. 88 degrees. winds out of the west at about 16 miles per hour. the humidity is down 35% right now. our dew points are down as well. across the rest of the region for potstown 83 degrees that's a comfortable temperature and georgetown 89 and in philadelphia a little bit of cloudiness but temperatures in the high 80s still. around the rest of the region we're in the mid-70s in the poconos, 85 in reading and 85 in washington township and close to 90 degrees in trenton and 84 degrees in doylestown and our temperatures right now right along the shoreline here mainly in the high 80s. so 87 degrees in beach haven. 82 degrees in louis and 86 degrees in dover. it's been a long heat wave already. our average for this time of year is 87 degrees. we've seen these 90-degree temperatures stretch all the way back to tuesday. today we hit a high of 90 degrees and sunday same thing. so we expect the heat wave to continue once again for us even as we go into sunday and even

into parts of next week. i'll show you that in the seven-day forecast but the satellite radar shot shows that we have a few little passing clouds and a few little passing showers depending on where you are, so right now the shower activity is just to the north of the poconos but as we go into the rest of this evening we'll maintain the chance of a stray passing shower right around 9:00 p.m. so that's port if you're going to the phillies game. and then as we head into the rest of this evening you could see a few more trace showers or isolated downpours closer to dover and right along cape may and stretching up to atlantic city. as we head to tomorrow on your sunday everything clears out nicely so we'll see plenty of sunshine. if you plan on heading out to the phillies game tonight at 7:00 expect temperatures at 80 degrees. you can see by the animation there's a slight chance of a few stray showers. 78 will be the temperature by 9:00 p.m. as you're heading home close to 11:00 77. high 80s tomorrow along the shore so it will be comfortable if you decide to head out to the
