was a woman out there that could beat her was thought to be here. >> it was the art move? >> yeah. and she was out. >> then we're done. >> we want to get to the top story in california. new evacuations overnight to tell you about. people packing up their homes to get out of the way of the swiftly approaching wild fires. one of the largest fires, the rocky fire remains 5% contained this morning. nbc gotty schwartz just filed this report for us from california. >> reporter: yeah take a look behind me. the fire conditions extreme even at night. it's easy to see why 12,000 people have been evacuated. this is just one stretch of the 27,000 acre that has been torched. overnight huge flames and more mandatory evacuations in california's lake county. just days after fire captain david was killed scouting a fire in northern california. a husband and father of two now hailed as a hero as a tight knit

community of firefighters worked through this difficult time. >> all kinds of things go to your head. could it have been me? what happened? fire >> reporter: fires in the west are offering no reprieve. heavy wind and lightning are making conditions worse. >> because of the drought and lack of water throughout california the fuel conditions and the bush burning is what we would normally see in late august. >> reporter: in rural washington state homeowners returning to find their houses destroyed. >> all three of my babies were raised in here. even him. it's crazy. >> reporter: in southern california it was round two. the major thurorough fare connecting l.a. to las vegas. today another fire near the same stretch of highway but this time firefighters were able to divert traffic and the flames. now the main focus for firefighters in california is up north at the rocky fire. so far 14 homes have burned while others have been saved.

>> we had the tanker come in the big jet drop a lot of retardant. if it wasn't for that i tonight think my property would be here. >> reporter: chris is packing up and evacuating along with hundreds of others as the fire continues to grow. a relently fire season only expected to get worse. here at the rocky fire, fire crews have been working on this fire for several days. they only have 5% containment. the conditions are looking like they're going to get worse today. back to you. >> tough up there. to politics now where there is new speculation this morning that vice president joe biden may be considering entering the race for the white house. this as the gop candidates get ready for their first debate on thursday. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker is in washington with more. >> reporter: good morning to you, craig. will he or won't he? one of the big debates in washington right now revolving around whether vice president joe biden will throw his hat in the democratic race for the

white house. there's new rumbling this morning that he might be giving it some thought. could democratic frontrunner hillary clinton be getting some fresh competition? according to the new york times, vice president joe biden is taking a new look at a potential run. the newspaper reporting that mr. biden's advisors have started to reach out to democratic leaders and donors who have not yet committed to mrs. clinton. one possible factor? biden late son bo who passed away from brain cancer. >> he encouraged his father to run before his death. they had conversations about this and even when beau was sick he said i think you should run. >> the vice president's press secretary down played the speculation. biden's long time friend senator john mccain telling kelly o'donnell. >> i think he sees this trust

factor of hillary clinton in a steep decline, and i think that he's examining his options. >> reporter: meanwhile the gop race is heating up too. as candidates get ready to face off this week in their first debate. only the top ten candidates qualify for the prime time stage. frontrunner donald trump a political novice trying to lower expectations. >> i have no idea how i'll do. maybe i'll do terrible. maybe i'll do great. >> reporter: the challenge for the nine other candidates how to respond to trump's brash style. >> what do you expect in the debate? do you expect he'll be the unfiltered donald trump? >> no. i really don't know what to expect. i think there will be lots of interaction between us and the other candidates. i think it will be a lively debate. >> reporter: now as for vice president joe biden, some of his key aids have been helping secretary clinton. clinton has broad support among democrats and she's polling very well. democratic sources say biden would likely only seriously

consider running for she were to stumble in a big way. it hasn't happened. biden has said he'll make a decision at the end of the summer. >> kristin welker from washington thank you. chuck todd is moderator of "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning. >> a lot of action for a summer weekend. it doesn't usually happen this way. >> this ain't august. >> no. what does your gut and d.c. sources this morning tell you the chances are that vice president biden will throw his hat in the ring? >> the problem with the -- trying to figure out what vice president bide season going to do, unlike most other national figures he has close counsel ands it family members first. in the past presidential candidates was run by his sister. his niece was the political director. his sons were always with him on the campaign trail. so the reporting that is family definitely would like to see him running is true. the question is what is he going to do? i think what you have to be

careful reporting about joe biden is there are plenty of advisors who don't have the last name of biden who aren't family members who don't fully know. joe biden is going to have a big summer vacation where the whole family is gathering. he's in mourning but they're going to have a conversation about this. after that we're truly going to know. one thing you have to remember is this erica. when you run for president once you usually want to do it again. his heart, i'm told is leaning toward running. the question is does he think he can win. >> there's one democratic voter say it's not like that we dislike hillary, we want to win the white house. is there a sense that vice president biden would fare better than hillary clinton at this point? >> i don't think there's polling evidence that says that. now that said this week brought some new numbers out that show hillary clinton had the lowest favorable ratings of all time and joe biden had the highest favorable ratings he's ever had recorded of all time. in general election match up they look about the same as

strong and previously hillary clinton looked like a stronger candidate. she's still very popular among democrats. her problem is with swing voters who are souring on her and view joe biden more favorably. because they don't like hillary clinton? but they never actually would vote for him. i think that's somebody that the biden people have to answer in order to figure out if it's truly viable for them to run. >> in the meantime on the republican side as we saw jeb bush told lester. it's going to be a lively debate. it's also a little confusing. we have two debates. the top ten will be in the prim time debate. realististly for the american voters how much are they going to learn or accomplish when 90 minutes is shared between ten people. >> exactly. if it's all evenly divided, you're going to hear nine minutes of a candidate. i promise you today on the show you'll hear more from donald trump and ben carson than you may hear from them in the

debate. what the public is going to learn is probably more stylistic. more to see how they interact with each other. and obviously the trump phenomena is going to end up being the story line. whethers it trump himself, the way other candidates react to trump. that is i think, part of this that makes this such a fun debate to watch but probably not very substantiative. >> all right. well we'll be watching that but we'll be tuning in for meet the presz press this morning. chuck, thank you. turning overseas where we got news overnight that rumors that cecil the lion's brother had been killed. scientists say jericho is alive and well and with his pride. kelly koeb ya ya is in london. >> reporter: good morning. it's been a confusing 24 hours for researchers and the millions around the world following the lions. the park where they live is about the size of connecticut,

and early this morning zimbabwe time researchers in a park ranger set out into the remote bushland searching for jericho, cecil's so called brother. cecil, the famous black maned lion killed by american dentist walter palmer wasn't the big male being tracked by scientists. that's jericho on the left and cecil on the right. jericho was colored as well and was believed to be looking after cecil's cubs. but late saturday volunteers of the zimbabwe conservation task force posted this on their facebook page ". but this morning one of the oxford scientists studying the pride tweeted jericho is alive and well. seen him at 7:06 zimbabwe time. he posted this picture of the healthy lion. the scientist said he was with

his lioness who had just made a kill. the pride is weaker. >> the death of one male lion can cause a cascade of effects which leads to other lions being killed. >> jericho and the cubs could face threats from other dominant male lions. for now the zimbabwe lion is being protected from hunters banning all hunting around the park. restricting the kind of hunting practiced by dr. palmer. >> all hunting has been suspended. >> dr. palmer is still in hiding and still wanted by the zimbabwe government. >> i understand that already the processes have been studied and we're looking for hisextraextradition. >> the dentist hasn't been charged and said he believed he had the proper permits.

>> reporter: authorities in zimbabwe are looking into two other protected killings of lions near the park. the one in april the second in july. both are just now coming to light and may explain some of the confusion among volunteers over the fate of jericho. >> kelly, thank you. sheinelle has more. breaking news overnight in the search for flight mh 370. a piece of debris on reunion island is being checked for any connection to malaysian airlines flight 370. items collected are sent to france for study. a possible wing part has already arrived at the lab. investigators will also check a suitcase for dna to see if it matches anyone on the flight that disappeared more than a year ago. and in tennessee a manhunt is underway after the shooting death of a police officer. 33-year-old officer sean bolton was shot multiple times. he died later at the hospital.

authorities say they're using all resources to track down the suspect. a collegiate baseball game suddenly became a fight to save the life of a 9-year-old bat boy. kansas baseball team think of their bat boy as a member of the team. kaiser carlisle was in the middle of the excitement of saturday's big game. but after a batter struck out kaiser wearing his helmet ran out to pick up the bat while a player on deck was in full swing. >> he was practice swinging the bat and ran by him and he was swinging and then hit him in the helmet and knocked him down. he got back up but he went right back down again. >> the umpire rushed to his aid. ems brought kaiser to the hospital in critical condition. the distraught college players in kansas for the summer knelt in prayer. a team official tells nbc he's a tough little guy, if i was a betting man, i would put my money on him. meantime they're asking fans to keep kaiser and his family in

their thoughts. in georgia family and friends gathered to say their farewells at the funeral of bobbi kristina brown. a long standing feud between the families of whitney houston and bobby brown faired at the service. brown's sister left saying the feud isn't over. >> it's not over. it has just begun. it has just begun. i just told her that whitney was going to haunt her from the grave. >> bobbi kristina brown died six months after she was found unresponsive in a bathtub at her atlanta home. the president is set to announce the administration is calling the biggest step ever to combat climate change. the white house released a video outlining the action president obama will take monday unveiling tough regulations to cut greenhouse gases. it could eventually lead to the closing of coal-fire power plant and boost the production of wind and solar power.

so let's talk about these wild fires. there are two dozen burning out west. >> you have thunderstorms without the rain so you get the lightning that triggers the storms and it's hot, dry, and breezy. these are all conditions that spread wild fires. right now there are 21 large fires burning across the state of california. now we are going to see conditions remain favorable for fires over the course of the next several days. we have red flag warnings in effect. that's for the high dry winds, and we also have some fire danger weather across parts of southern oregon and also into idaho, too. humidity is around 25 to 35%. that's dry air. temperatures remain warm too. in northern california it will stay hot close to 90 degrees. we'll finally start to see conditions improve >> good sunday morning, i'm meteorologist michelle grossman. another day like yesterday. mostly sunny and hot.

meredith. meredith arrested charged with public endangerment for downing the drone with a shotgun. meredith claims nobody was in danger when he did it. the drone was hovering just over his 6 foot fence. the camera allegedlied aimed at his duodaughters in the backyard. >> we don't know if files. >> the pilot said if that were the case by all means shoot it down. >> if somebody was flying in my backyard playing peekaboo around a canape i would shoot it down too. the problem with willie is he's not telling the truth. >> reporter: this recording of the flight path proves that he was flying above 200 feet but neighbor willie said there was more than one flight that day. >> it's an invasion of privacy. we were in our backyard. had he never stopped over my house we wouldn't have this

conversation. >> reporter: a feud over a drone in kentucky. isn't this sort of how that other feud in this part of the country started? you know, the hatfield and mccoys? quite the sight to behold here in new york city. check this out. incredible images of wild animals put up on the empire state building last night. francis rivera is here. new york city skyline is stunning already. even more so with these images. it was done by a couple of film makers who are trying to make a difference in the world helping to raise awareness of endangered animals. for years the empire state building here in new york has helped honor certain occasions and holidays by lightening up with various themed colors. from the fourth of july's red and blue to the red and green of christmas. even the colors of the rainbow for gay pride week. but last night, the landmark building was showing these

images to draw attention to the mass extext. from a snow leopard to a bald eagle. the exhibit the first of the kind using moving images on the building was created by film makers travis and luis. >> i think we're trying to start something here. thinking about what we can do with the world and our lives and the cities. >> we're about to lose half the species on the planet potentially by the end of the century. it's the biggest issue on the planet. >> the images which appeared on 33 floords were displayed using 40 projectors on the roof on the nearby party. one was a giant ape appearing to climb the 71st floor. reminiscent with another primate. another special moment of the night this image of cecil the lion who was killed last month in zimbabwe with a cross bow.

fund-raiser online. the premise is pretty straightforward. identify a need figure out how much it costs to fill the void raise money, and give it back. do it all within 24 hours. it's the brain child of a young woman determined to make a difference. for eight years, this detroit street corner has hosted a weekly barbecue for the homeless. an all-volunteer pot luck. every saturday rain or shine. sometimes serving as many as 200 people. >> reporter: what does this barbecue if your eyes mean to the community. >> it means to an end. build community and relationships. >> reporter: self-described social entrepreneur mallory brown was introduced to the barbecue five years ago. on tuesday she introduced it to the world. >> it's more than feeding the homeless. it's really a place where we come together to share a meal. it can all end tomorrow. the barbecue is losing its home. >> recent zoning changes meant
