press." nbc 10 news starts now. all board. the clock is officially running in the one-day lottery for septa passes for the pope's visit. hear what commuters need to know. new from overnight, someone slashed the tires of several cars along a south philadelphia street. today marks a solid week since our heat wave began. humidity will be building but there is relief in sight. it's 4:00 a.m. good monday morning on nbc 10 news today. i'm tracy davidson. let's get right to meteorologist brittney shipp. >> relief is in sight for the

seven-day forecast but not for today. we expect temperatures to push back into the 90s. 67 in the poconos, 63 if you're heading out the door son. pottstown, 3 in philadelphia and 69 degrees in dover. yesterday was day six. we did see a high yesterday of 90 degrees. as we head into the rest of today, our temperatures push to 93 degrees. by tuesday, 91 but we do expect temperatures to drop out of the 90s on wednesday or thursday. right now, as we head into the next eight hours or so, our temperatures will stay in the low have by 6:00 a.m. by 9:00 a.m., 80 agrees and by the time you head out for lunch, 88 degrees. it will be a warm lunch hour. more details on what you can expect from your weather in my next forecast. right now, we check in with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. good morning. >> good morning, brittney.

we are deal willing construction on the spring garden off ramp. road closed, signs and crew actively working on the scene right here. what the problem is, that you can't access the schuylkill expressway westbound from the spring garden ramp. if you are on the schuylkill, an 11-minute drive time up toward the blue route. no real problems there. we just looked at the schuylkill. here's an eastbound drive time. 13 minutes heading into center city. same for 95. a 13-minute trip if you're headed southbound. the blue route is doing okay. area bridges are nice and clear so far this morning as well. tracy? happening now, four hours into septa's one-day lottery giving riders a chance to score the coveted passes for the pope's visit in september. even if you enter the lottery, no guarantee you'll get a ticket. it's a lottery.

>> reporter: this is one of 18 outlying stations that will be shuttling people to and from center city during the papal visit. you can expect that to be very different when the pope is here next month. the septa website for this lottery has been up and running for four hours now. no real problems. i've heard from several people who have tried this and have gone through successfully. here's what the website looks like. it is on septa.org. this lottery is open just for today. until midnight. the winners will be announced starting on thursday. you'll get a congratulatory e-mail. if you are selected you still have to take another step and buy your pope passes. this is for september 26th and 27th. septa has not indicated xaktdly

in south philadelphia will be waking up to a major enconvenience this morning. tires slashed on their cars. a man walked down ellsworth street with a box cutter and punctured a front tire on about ten cars. police are trying tra tock down the man responsible. fire crews put out a house fire around 12:30 on east price street. officials say it appears the fire started in the bax. every got out of the home safely. water department crews will make repairs in bustleton after an 8 inch main broke yesterday afternoon. about 50 homes have not had water service since then. it's 4:06. indicted congressman shaka fatah will make an appearance this afternoon. the congressman is accused of

misusing his congressional influence, stealing taxpayer money as well. fatah denies the charges. congressman is married to nbc 10 anchor renee chenault-fattah. she's labeled as person e in the indictment and affiliate of the fatah enterprise. the feds allege she participated in a scheme to fraudulently sell a car in order to pay closing costs on a vacation home. philadelphia police are searching for the driver who hit a 5-year-old and took off. medics rushed the child to the hospital where she was last reported in stable condition. the vehicle is describeç des e

described as a light colored jeep and pennsylvania tags with jsg-6673. anyone with information is asked to call police. a live look outside right now. there's a new push to revitalize the city. camden is a finalist for a $30 million grant to help pay for redevelopment. leaders say proposed budget cuts could wipe out that money. in delaware, the v.a. medical center is holding an open house. it's part of a national press day. showcasing the v.a.'s process and accomplishments. they'll be joined by veterans affairs leaders from philadelphia to discuss plans on moving the organization forward. also today in delaware, congressional leaders are hosting a veterans job fair at

the middletown memorial fire hall in greene street. the event is free and runs from 10:00 till 2:00. tonight in montgomery county, the planning commission will meet to talk about a proposal to turn the community's oldest church into office and apartment space. developers are converting two other church properties, the former united methodist church and st. margaret church's gleason center into condos. 4:08. today the philadelphia eagles report to the nova care complex for day two of training camp. head coach chip kelly caught the attention of fans. he answered a question in response to brandon boykin and how he didn't relate to some players. >> when he left here last night,

at 71 in atlantic city at the airport there. close to 70 degrees in wildwood and 64 in millville. we're going to see another above average day. our heat wave will continue. this will be day seven. our highest expected to push into pottstown. we are going to factor in our increase in humidity. we are going it see the wind direction shifting. we'll see warmer, more moist air coming up from the south. we're also watching a line of storms that it's moving through toronto, parts of buffalo and cleveland. we'll see energy head our way. close to 5:00 p.m. the storms may move in.ç as we head into the afternoon, certain areas like allentown stretching down into parts of lancaster county will be dealing with the chance of isolated thunderstorms as we go into the rest of the evening. you'll notice most of these chances for thunderstorms will

be spotty, clearing up as we head into tuesday and whennen -- and wednesday. my seven-day forecast will be coming up in about ten minutes. let's get an early check, check traffic with jessica. >> we start off in new jersey on 295, heading out the door, currently no problems. not an active scene but you can see lane restrictions in the area. this is still a good drive time from 38 up towards the black horse pike. a 1 -minute trip. heading out the door on the 42 freeway, actually below average drive time, the northbound from 55 up towards the walt whitman bridge. that's a four-minute trip there. all cars are green and moving. as for mass transit, currently no problems or delays. all good news for new jersey transit, septa and the patco

4:14. this morning, an army of firefighters are trying to contain dozens of wildfires. most of the fires are in northern california like this one, the so-called rocky fire. officials have told more than 12,000 people to evacuate.

this blaze scorched more than 70 square miles and destroyed two dozen homes. that is an unbelievable amount of acreage burned in such a short amount of time. it's because of the drought conditions that are allowing fires like that one and all the others that were responding to to grow so quickly. >> the rocky fire is only 5% contained. dry conditions and shifting winds are fanning the flames. further south near los angeles, a brush fire burned a section of the los padres national forest. the charo fire did not threaten buildings and fire officials did not order evacuations. now to southern oregon where firefighters are trying to save homes near the stout fire. high temperatures and gusty winds have caused it to double in size to around 15,000 acres. 4:16. a 9-year-old bat boy

accidentally hit by a bat over the weekend has died. keiser carlisle was a bat boy in wichita kansas, a summer league for college players. one of the players accidentally hit keiser during a warmup swing. he says he heard the bat hit keiser who was wearing a helmet before he took a few steps back and fell. the boy died of head injuries yesterday. just outside chicago, a festival ends in a fatality after a tent collapsed during severe weather. one person died, several others were hurt yesterday. about 15 people had to be taken to the hospital. three were treated for serious injuries. the event was canceled much athe ten the collapse. bobbi kristina brown will be laid to rest today at the same north jersey cemetery where her mother, whitney houston is

buried. friends and family members gathered saturday. she died july 26th, six months after her boyfriend found her unconscious in a bathtub. she was the only child of singer bobby brown and the late whitney houston. preparing for the pope. the world meeting of families is an event bringing the pope to philadelphia. this is open to all faiths. it features speakers from various backgrounds. as nbc 10's chris cato reports, one of them won't have to travel very far to deliver his message. >> reporter: first african baptist church in south philadelphia is the oldest of its kind in pennsylvania. >> he spoke from that exact pulpit. >> reporter: the man behind the pulpit now, the reverend terrence griffith will find himself preaching to another flock on the world meeting

stage. >> it's a world meeting of families. >> reporter: he's speaking at the world meeting of families in september. he believes organizers chose him because he has a message for parents of all faiths. >> we need parents to get back to basics. we need parents to trainç thei kids, take their children to the mosque, the church, the synagogue. >> reporter: he believes a lot of the problems facing american cities, crime, drug, unemployment ultimately exist because children aren't in church like they were 50 years ago. there's no accountability, he says, to a higher power. >> without god in the society, the society is destined for destruction. >> reporter: he says philadelphia needs families to go to church, almost as much as churches need them. >> without the family, there's no church. without the family there's no synagogue. without a family there's no mosque. we need a family. >> reporter: families have held his church together for 206 years and counting. in south philadelphia, chris

weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good monday morning. as we head into the rest of day, our humidity is going to return. it will feel more uncomfortable, more sticky out. temperatures are still beginning to stay hot for us, above average heading into the low 90s today. right now, look outside at philadelphia, mostly clear skies. 73 degrees. our humidity is up. you can already tell the difference. 73%. wind speeds out of the south at 8 miles an hour. our wind direction has shifted. we'll continue so sto see warmer from the south. 69 in dover, 71 in atlantic city, temperatures in millville at 64 degrees. yesterday we hit a high of 09 degrees. that makes for day six. today if we hit the high of 93, that's day seven. it macs an entire week we've seen temperatures at 90 degrees

or above. we expect temperatures to hit 91 as we head into tuesday. the end is near in our heat wave. our satellite radar shot shows quiet conditions. mostly sunny skies to start. but then as we head into the afternoon, we'll track a chance of isolated showers, even thunderstorms move into the poconos. parts of the lehigh valley, even stretching out to lancaster county. by 11:00 p.m., we see the showers drifting closer to philadelphia out to lancaster county once again around 11:00 p.m. before clearing up as we head into tuesday and also into wednesday. by thursday, for the rest of the workweek as well, we are going to see unsettled weather. the heat wave will continue as we head into the rest of today, expect temperatures closer to 93 degrees. 91 for millville and that will be our range between between 91 and 94 with a chance of a few isolated thunderstorms.
