mistake. but first a killer on the run. a philadelphia neighborhood on lockdown after a mechanic is murdered inside a car repair shop. police followed a trail of greasy footprints but it did not lead them to the killer. >> reporter: jacqueline investigators in the homicide unit here have a name and several addresses to work with. the victim was killed tonight while he was at work at a job only a few blocks from the house he grew up in. nbc10 cameras captured swat teams in full protective gear after a murder native. a life long friend of stanley martin who everyone called eli. >> my son called me told me eli

just got killed. >> reporter: the chief inspector says the police found the victim slumped to the ground between several cars. he'd apparently been shot in the chest with a shotgun at close range. leaving the scene, they found this trail of oily footprints and files of discarded clothing. with police helicopters searching from above and heavily armed swat crews on the ground, they zeroed in on one apartment, but found no one inside. >> there is a possibility that the shooter exited the property before police were aware. >> reporter: for friends of the victim, the murder seems an unlikely end to a hardx working neighborhood success story. >> all my childhood friends grew up around here. we all made it in life.

none of us got killed. >> reporter: now, witnesses from that scenelj spent hours interviewing with police tonight. and investigators are confident one of the many surveillance cameras in that area likely captured the shooter as he fled the scene. we're life tonight at police headquarters headquarters, nbc10 news. now to a story you'll see only on 10. a korean war veteran is telling the story of how he was robbed and beaten inside his home. it happened in west vincent township. the ordeal began with a knock at the door and a lie. >> reporter: an 81-year-old chester county man is on the mend. >> this was really really black. i had a big bruise up here. skin missing. and i had blood all over my head. >> reporter: cuts and bruises still cover his face arms and legs, a week after a man pretend pretending to be a water worker

beat and robbed him. >> he said do you have a water problem. >> reporter: the man follow-upped up that question by forcing his way into the victim's home. the victim who asked not to be identified explains what happened next. >> that's when he grabbed my arms from behind and hustled me in there. and kept saying he was going to shoot/ he must have said that 15 times. >> reporter: the suspect never showed a gun. he pushed the korean war vet into his bedroom. that's where the robber tied his arms behind his back with the victim's own shirt and covered him with this blanket. >> loosely tied him to the bed. >> reporter: the man got away with cash a laptop, and prescription drugs. the victim said it would have gone differently had he had his way. >> i said if i had my pen, i

would have stabbed him in the eye. >> reporter: they'rex c s happened again. someone smashed out car windows at the train station for the second time we spoke to a woman who says she got off the train to find her car windows broken tonight, along with about six other cars. she thinks someonemx5 just for kicks. >> nothing was ransacked. the glove box wasn't open or anything. it didn't look like anything actually valuable they had was taken. >> this is the same train station where we reported windows last month and stealing valuables from inside. police have not yet made an arrest in that case.t)

night at 7:00 for a special about pope francis. nbc10's jim rosenfield spoke with his close friends, colleagues, and critics to learn more about the man who became the people's pope. >> congressman chaka fattah says he will run for reelection next year despite a federal indictment against him. today, the 11-term democrat made his first public appearance since he was indicted next week. the indictment claims the congressman took bribes and mishandled campaign money. he says he is innocent. >> as i indicated, i deny these allegations. i also said that as an elected official i have never been involved in any illegal activity. >> today nbc10 learned that fattah is scheduled to make his first appearance in court august

a hitchbot hoax? that is the question on people's minds tonight after some newly released video claims to help solve the mystery of its demise. take a look at this purported surveillanc5" where a man appears to jump kick an object against a wall on an old city street. nbc10 has not independently confirmed the video's authenticity. the person who released the footage is prankster. on saturday morning, they got a photo confirming it was van vandalized beyond repair. >> we were shocked, i would say. >> yes, we were quite shocked.

>> new at 11:00, a survival story. earlier today we showed you this video of the coast guard rescuing a man off the jersey shore. tonight, he's telling his story for the very first time including how he swam 10 miles to safety. keith jones has the story you'll see only on 10. >> boat went this way and i fell right out. big thunderstorm, giant bolts of lightning and just waves that were huge. >> may day, may day. >> reporter: that call came 10:00 saturday night from damien's friend still on this 40-foot fishing boat. >> i didn't pfe a chance to show him how to operate the auto pilot. i think that's the reason why the boat kept going. >> reporter: leaving the 45-year-old ) raging storm without a life jacket. his only motivation, his family. a loving wife of one year and

his young sons. >> i just1a couldn't -- couldn't picture theqkeñi next day somebody coming to tell them that i'm not going to be home anymore because i knew it would ruin their lives. and i love them too much for that. >> i love him more than anything. and i mean that with every ounce of my body. >> reporter: so damien started swimming for about 10 miles. >> the wind was so bad, it was blowing me back or it was blowing the ship away from me. >> reporter: unable to feel his legs his arms cramping hours into it it felt hopeless. >> i coughed water out of my lungs so many times. all i would have had to do was take one breath of water and it was over. >> reporter: after four hours, his friend found him and then the coast guard appeared overhead. they grabbed him, lifted him to a hospital where remarkably he made a full recovery. and learned a life lesson along

the way. always wear a life jacket. >> it/o]=u1b u(qq' a whole different story. >> reporter: keith jones, nbc10 news. what an amazing story. and there were some thunderstorms offshore on saturday night. most of the area was dry over the weekend. we continue the heat wave one more day looks like. chance of some showers overnight tonight for one thing. and we got a big break with the heat and humidity on the way. out there. it's 81 degrees. still not all that humid, but it's getting a little bit more so. it feels like it's 83. today, it was 93. it felt like 93. current temperatures well, it's 83 degrees in ben salem. 72 in allen town. it's in the 70s across much of the area. tomorrow yeah, it's going to get up there again. with a southwest wind the

delaware beaches are going to be the warmest, near 90 degrees. get that sea breeze at the jersey shore. even though the ocean is up to 75 probably won't get too much above the low 80s right at the jersey shore beaches. we had a few showers up toward the poconos. another few showers now south of harrisburg that may move into parts of the area during the middle of the night. and then there's more showers and thunderstorms back to the west. and we'll see what happens to those. some of those may make it at least into some of the western suburbs. but the temperature, that's going to stay up a bit. the humidity's going to be up a bit. if there are any showers during the day tomorrow the best chance is southern delaware and extreme south jersey. this particular computer model really not showing us much in the way of showers. but it's certainly showing us that heat once again.

at least to 90 degrees. for the rest of the night, we've got the humidity going the be hot, a little bit more humid. temperatures getting into the low 90s. chance of shower or even a thunderstorm southern delaware, extreme south jersey generally later in the day. then on wednesday, the big change. the humidity, it goes down a lot.i by thursday, the temperature's going down. this heat wave is not going to last muchq longer. by friday, system comes inó6 the west. looks like heavy rain friday or friday night, maybe even into the beginning of the éfweekend. why was demarco murray held out of training camp yesterday? we're going to hear from him. and a fight ñry in dallas training camp. that is next.
