[snoring.] take the roar out of snore. yet another innovation only at a sleep number store. nbc 10 breaking news. that breaking news a police car and a taxi crash. at least one person is hurt. we're live on the scene to find out exactly what happened. while you were sleeping mother nature put on quite a light show. check out this lightning we captured in plymouth meeting and other areas west of philadelphia. right now we're tracking the threat of severe weather this morning and then again this afternoon. 4:00 a.m. this is nbc 10 news today, i'm tracy davidson. we have issued a first alert because of the storms. meteorologist bill henley is tracking them. he has his first alert forecast. good morning, bill. >> it has been a light show overnight. this is what we're tracking heavy weather moving through lancaster and eastern york county. the storm is on the move. it's this line of storms that's of concern this morning. there's also a possibility of

strong storms developing this afternoon. very heavy rainfall and lightning moving through eastern york county and into the lancaster area. if this holes together, it could be in chester county within the hour. and heading towards other parts of the delaware valley. it is a line of storms moving through not only the new york and the philadelphia area but to our southwest and later today, there's a possibility we'll be looking at more showers and thunderstorms with the threat greatest in delaware and south jersey. the possibility of severe weather could include damaging winds and a threat of hail possibly even tornadoes later today. we're tracking this storm right now. i'll have your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i come back in ten minutes. let's get a look at traffic with jessica boyington. >> you said it bill not much in terms of traffic so far. we're on the vine street expressway, right around 8th street. we're headed westbound right in here towards the schuylkill expressway 30th street station.

you can just see signs and leftover signs in the area for some -- from some earlier road work. that's not setting anybody back too much. the drive times three minutes headed westbound from 95 up towards the schuylkill expressway. let's take a look at the drive times heading towards the philadelphia area on 95. currently no problems or delays. the schuylkill is doing okay the blue route is doing all right as well. if you're heading out the door on the p.a. turnpike, the cars are nice and green. you have a drive time of about, at the most, 23 minutes. 4:02. breaking news we're following in west philadelphia. a police car and a taxi crashed a short time ago. there are injuries. matt delucia is live on scene. >> three people are in the hospital including the officer who was driving this cruiser right there. you can see the investigation is still under way right now. those two cars banged up the cruiser and the taxi just to the

right over there. this is at the intersection of 56th and haverford. the female officer along with the two people in the cab, they were conscious as they were taken away their injuries not life-threatening. the folks in the cab, we're told, more banged up than the officer. we'll come back live again, at this intersection is shut down for the moment as the investigation continues. back again in 30 minutes with an update. live in philadelphia, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. we're also following breaking news overnight, a shooting in the parking lot of the pnc bank art center in home homedale. witnesses say there was an argument someone started shooting. two people are in the hospital and police are searching for the gunman. in north philadelphia,

post-game coverage as well as every snap of the preseason opener august 16th against the coals. happening today, the trial begins for the man accused of shooting and killing his pregnant girlfriend. around fitzpatrick is charged with the murder of both the mother and her unborn child. it happened in february of 2012. neighbors called police when they heard a woman screaming. when paramedics got there, they found 24-year-old tiffany gillespie dead in the basement of her south philadelphia home. a korean war veteran robbed and beaten in his home in chester county is telling his story only to nbc 10. police say amman pretending to be a water working forced his way into the vet's home in late june. we'll show you a sketch of the intrurder who never showed a gun while tieing up the victim. da denise nakano spoke with the

vet who asked not to be identified. >> he grabbed my arms from behind and hustled me in there and kept saying he was going to shoot me. he must have said that 15 times. i said if i had my pen i would have stabbed him in the eye. >> the robber got away with cash, a laptop and prescription drugs. police are looking for a white subaru neighbors saw in the area around the time of the robbery. delaware county teacher paul hoschwender will be sentenced. he's already serving time. his arrest prompted lawmakers that prevents abusive teachers from relocating from one school district to another. here's how that so-called pass the trash law works. it bans confidentiality agreements. it requires anyone working with children to disclose if they've been investigated or disciplined

cemetery manager, ethel melvin and shaughn graves. they're also looking for another person. at last check, nearly 40,000 people entered the lottery for septa. the winners will be announced thursday via e-mail. special passes are required to ride the rails the weekend of the pope's visit in september. now when pope francis visits philadelphia, security will be tight. how tight that remains to be seen. yesterday, nbc 10 spoke to a vat ken insider about the coordination effort currently under way. the negotiations continue but francis wants to be close to people. i think everybody realizes that. >> does that mean the secret service is going to have to sort of bend to what the pope and his

in parts of philadelphia. clouds are overhead at 77 degrees. a warm start again for wilmington at 75 right now. clear view across the delaware no problem just yet but later this morning, then again this afternoon, the possibility of storms. the radar shows that line of storms moving through the allentown, berks county and the heaviest weather now in york county and lancaster county. these storms are moving to the east at 40 miles an hour. what pushed them in southern chester county and lower oxford by about 4:30 this morning. very heavy rainfall with those fast-moving storms. it has a history of producing quite a bit of lightning. that's a line of storms moving to the east. the possibility of damaging winds this morning and with thunderstorm development this afternoon, the possibility exists for more severe weather. you can see that includes philadelphia delaware and south jersey at greater risk but farther north and west that risk will be diminishing during the day today. your neighborhood by

to find out if the police lights and sirens were on at the time of the accident. we will check back with him live from the scene coming up at 4:30. this new video just in to nbc 10. watch as a deputy drags a man away from his car seconds before a train coming barreling down the tracks. the sheriff's office says two deputies were in the area when they heard the car crash into the crossing guard. one ran to alert the engineer while the other rescued the driver. we also have new video showing a design in new hampshire after a powerful storm knocked over a circus tent. two people died, a father and daughter. as many as 250 were trapped under the collapsed tent. police now say most made it out safely. developing right now, a wildfire in northern california thought to be under control is raging once again. the so-called rocky fire is burning about 100 miles north of san francisco. so far, the flames have destroyed two dozen homes and forced 13,000 people to

evacuate. >> i am scared. i really am scared. they told us that this was an unprecedented fire. it was everywhere, huge. >> and take a look this is time lapsed video. look at this. it shows the fire growing, puffing flames and smoke with every passing minute. fire crews across drought-stricken california are hoping cooler weather will let them get a handle on about 20 wildfires. many memphis, the manhunt is over for an accused cop killer. he was wanted in the shooting death of officer shawn bolton on saturday night. investigators say bolton interrupted a drug deal when willborn shot him. >> we were always one step behind or ahead of him. i think he felt the walls closing in. >> >> willborn was out of prison

on parole after serving time for a bank robbery. yesterday, the jury decided not to eliminate the death penalty for james holmes. the decision clears the way for another round of arguments before choosing between capital punishment and life in prison without parole. the same jury found holmes guilty of opening fire in a crowded movie theater in aurora in 2012 killing 12 people and injuring 70. cuffed in class. new video shows what appears to be a child handcuffed at his desk. the american civil liberties union is suing. there's the video. the suit claims a kentucky sheriff's deputy who is also a school resource officer admitted to handcuffing the 8-year-old. he says it's because the child with special needs tried to hit him. this isn't the first time he's been accused of doing something like this. >> children are exhibiting

behaviors related to their disabilities. both of them have adhd. >> the school district is not named in the lawsuit and it does not ask for the officer to be fired. in addition to monetary damage from the county that it does seek, the parents say they want all deputies trained in how to handle children with disabilities. an attorney for the sheriff's office says it is reviewing the case but refused to comment. former president jimmy carter is expected to mack a full recovery from elective surgery. doctors in atlanta removed a small mass from carter's liver yesterday. a hospital spokesperson would not release details on the procedure or say what led to it. carter is 90 years old. he served one term as president from 1977 through 1981. mexican authorities have found another unfinished drug tunnel just two blocks from the u.s. border in tijuana. it's the third tunnel they've found in the past four months and the first drug tunnel to be found since the notorious drug

cartel leader joaquin "el chapo" guzman escaped from prison. gulf weed algae has been washing up along the shore for weeks. officials assigned crews to the task over fears it could ruin cancun's reputation for pristine beaches. >> not enough to like ruin the holiday but it is frustrating when you -- because the beach and the sun is so good for the see seaweed to prevent you from going in the sea. it's alittle annoying. >> it could be due to high levels of ocean nutrients, changing currents or wind patterns. now your first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 20 minutes after 4:00.

things are quiet in the immediate philadelphia area. we're tracking showers and thunderstorms that are severe this morning. they are moving toward our area and a possibility this morning. we'll see it first in chester con it i, moving in from the west. clouds over philadelphia 77 degrees. getting a warm start. it's going to be another hot afternoon and it's not going to be an all-day rainfall. certainly quiet, no sign of any rain just yet. this is what we're tracking. the rain is starting to move in to upper montgomery and chester county and a severe thunderstorm warning, you just saw it flash on the screen, has just been issued for southern chester county into delaware county northern new castle county and northern cecil county and northeast of maryland and extends into salem county and gloucester counties in new jersey. this is a line of storms moving to the east at 40 miles an hour. and within these storms, the rain is coming down at a rate of more than 5 inches an hour. they are on the move. i mentioned the move at 40 miles an hour. they'll be moving quickly into

the new london area and wilmington and into delaware county. we could see the storms hold together and produce not only heavy rain but there's a potential for damaging winds with these storms. there's a cold front that's on the way. it will push through the area this morning but there's a possibility that parts of the area will see storms this afternoon. 7:00 this morning. you can see the lines on the move. this is just updated information. by 9:00 in the morning, it's pulling offshore. by then we could have seen damaging winds. then most of the day kind of quiet. this is 11:00 this morning. we'll see sunshine. we'll be on our way to the low 90s this afternoon and then keeping a close watch on areas along the coast and in southern delaware. cape may county into the atlantic city area southern delaware could see strong storms develop and there's a potential for severe storms as these move through the area for tomorrow. for later today. tomorrow, though, we get a cool start. tomorrow afternoon the temperatures climb into the
