printed critical of her. they say she reached in which she leaked information of old cases to the newspaper to get back to people that she blamed for the original newspaper article. >> ladies and gentlemen, this is a sad day for the citizens of pennsylvania. and it is a sad day for all of us in law enforcement. >> reporter: in announcing a a list of criminal charges against the attorney general, the state district attorney said that she misused her office and lie edd the grand jury. >> that no one is above the law, not even the chief law enforcement officer. >> reporter: she is charged with leaking secret grand jury information to a philadelphia newspaper, and witness, said that she did that in an attempt to e embarrass two former staffers that she felt released information critical of her, and the d.a. says no information --

for that 2009 case. she was also called to montgomery county to testify in front of a grand jury. prosecutors say that's where she lied about the original allegations in that case. so the actions happened here in montgomery county and will be prosecuted in montgomery county. >> deanna durante live in norristown, thank you very much. pennsylvania's governor is called on kathleen kane to step down. governor wolf says kane should resign because she cannot do her job while facing such serious charges. >> i don't know how she can defend herself against those serious charges and remain in office and do the job that we pennsylvanians need her to do to be the chief law enforcement officer. >> not to mention kathleen kane's driver is also facing charges. patrick reese is charged with indirect criminal contempt. this is video of kane and reese

together last month. the charges against him stem from last august, when prosecutors say reese secretly accessed the files of the grand jury that was investigating his boss. count on nbc 10 for new information as kathleen kane prepares to surrender to face the charges against her. read more about the back story, too, right now on the nbc 10 news app. chased and attacked. philadelphia police tell us this surveillance video shows the crime in action. a man runs after a woman and knocks her to the ground. this assault happened in philadelphia's queen village section in the 700 block of passyunk avenue. nbc 10's drew smith is live in the neighborhood where neighbors are worried. >> reporter: yeah, they are sharing this video hoping someone recognizes this guy and turns him in. the video is quite clear. it shows a woman running down this section of the street right here, a man following fast behind. police want to find him and find out why he slammed this woman to the ground twice. surveillance cameras from an

insurance office captured it all. you see a woman running south down passyunk avenue, a man in a white teeshirt following fast behind. >> it was right here. >> reporter: we showed the video to people who live here. they cringed when they saw the man had caught up to the woman and slammed her to the ground. >> there's usually a lot of people in this area. >> reporter: but at 3:00 in the morning, there was not. police say the assault continued after he ran back up the block only to return and hit her again. this time, he grabbed her cell phone and ran off. >> scares me because i can't run fast. because i have arthritis. that really freaks me out. >> reporter: jody applebaum remembers an assault last year. >> it is always terribly disturbing. the fact i live two blocks away, don't like it. >> reporter: some neighbors plan to change their routines. >> walking with somebody to feel a little more safe because usually i just walk up and down, i'm here, i walk up and down

here every single day. >> reporter: it is actually a growing business community here. there are a lot of restaurants and shops around. some business owners pretty upset by what happened. they are hoping it doesn't happen again. we are working on that part of the story and will see you in the 5:00 hour. drew smith, nbc 10 news. the deptford mall temporarily closed because of this muddy mess. it came from a large water main break in the parking lot. sky force 10 over the scene a short time ago. the break happened around 1:00 this afternoon. right now, crews are working to repair that system. we just checked and the mall is expected to reopen soon. a lot of mud there in the parking lot. getting fired a second time. that's what's about to happen to a philadelphia police narcotics officer who won his job back after an acquittal on corruption charges. this time, police say he failed a drug test. police commissioner charles ramsey says harry betz will be suspended for 30 days with the intent to dismiss.

a law enforcement source says betz tested positive for marijuana. a jury acquitted betz and five other officers on federal corruption charges in may. the officers regained their jobs through a judge's ruling last month. they have since filed defamation suits against city officials. new information about philadelphia's preparations for the pope's visit. philadelphia public schools are now requesting another day off ahead of the pontiff's arrival. schools are already off wednesday, september 23rd for yom kippur and they were already off that friday because of the pope's visit. he arrives on saturday. now the school district is requesting thursday off as well. this comes one day after the city announced paralyzing road closures that weekend. the schuykill expressway will see all eastbound lanes shut down from the blue route in conshohocken to interstate 95. the westbound lanes of the schuykill will close from 95 to u.s. 1. portions of city avenue, u.s. 1,

from belmont to lancaster will be shut down. that's the area in bala cynwyd where the pope will be staying overnight. also 676 will close in both directions. no traffic on the vine street expressway. the ben franklin bridge will also be closed to drivers beginning friday, september 25th until early monday, september 28th. here's a live look from sky force 10. if you look closely, you can see nbc 10's tim furlong standing on the bridge. tim has been on the move today finding out what impact the bridge closures will have on people trying to get to philly. >> reporter: that was our mission and we chose to accept it. we were told this morning we need to find out how they get to see the pope from jersey and from delaware. one of the things we learned as we come down on the deck of the bridge is that a lot of people in cars and tour buses will actually park their cars down by the riversharks stadium and walk all the way down here and go over there, get up on to the bridge, but then they'll have to walk up here on the deck of the

bridge. the travel lanes will be closed to cars so you are able to walk in the lanes of traffic but then you will have to go this way and you will have to walk all the way across past the comcast center over way past the comcast center and that, my friends, is where you will finally find the pope. all the ways we get into philly, some of them won't be options when the pope is here. >> i heard it will be a gigantic mess. we are staying far away. >> reporter: many of you already got your septa pope pass congratulations e-mails. you can ride their rails into a few different stations which will still leave you over a mile walk to the no traffic box to the parkway. patco will run trains but admittedly don't have enough to get everyone in from new jersey and the ben will be closed to cars but not to feet which means to get from here all the way to here, well, wear comfortable shoes. how long will it take you? >> probably like an hour. more than that. >> northwest on pearl street,

taking part in a pre-debate forum including former pennsylvania senator rick santorum. it is scheduled to start in about an hour. some are calling this the happy hour debate. meanwhile, democrats have announced their own debate schedule. they will hold six presidential debates. the first one is set for october 13th in nevada. four debates are planned for early primary states in advance of the iowa caucuses on february 1st. then in november the candidates will face off in des moines, iowa, then manchester, new hampshire in december. next year the debates will move to charleston, south carolina, miami, florida and wisconsin. today the voting rights act turns 50. the landmark legislation legally protected everyone's right to vote. president johnson signed the voting rights act into law on this date in 1965. the reverend martin luther king jr. was one of the civil rights activists at the signing. the act banned racial discrimination, literacy testing

and poll taxes. tactics often used to keep black voters out of the voting booth. on this anniversary comes a call for a new era of voting rights for pennsylvanians. state senator vincent hughes joined election advocates on independence mall today pushing a bill that would automatically register somebody to vote whenever they have any interaction with state government. >> we are going on the offensive, not playing defense, but going on the offense to make sure that every citizen in the state of pennsylvania has the unabridged right to vote. >> hughes estimates two million pennsylvanians are eligible to vote but are not registered. a really comfortable day outside. you probably noticed temperatures a little bit cooler. humidity is down, too.

but we are tracking rain. we have rain just off to our west and some of you will see the rain as early as late tonight. now, the heaviest rain we do expect will mostly be new jersey and delaware and that's really where a majority of the rain will be as we go into friday. good news, so far it looks like this area of low pressure that's bringing the rain will be moving out as we go through the weekend so we have weekend clearing and it will still be pretty warm through the weekend, too. live look at center city. cloud cover has definitely been increasing today. mostly cloudy, 84 degrees, humidity is still low, around 33%. many areas feel very comfortable with slightly cooler temperatures. 80 in allentown and pottstown, 79 in west chester, 82 for many of suburbs in new jersey, millville, glassboro, 81 degrees in dover right now. most of the area is still on the dry side. it won't be until late tonight when we get more rain moving in. as you can see, the clouds are around and some rain in parts of lancaster county right now near harrisburg. the bulk of the moisture is still off to the west.

that's where we see an area of low pressure. so this low will essentially just slide from west to east, remaining to our south. that's where most of the rain is going to be. here's future weather as we go into late tonight. that area of low pressure gets closer by tomorrow afternoon. that's going to be just to our south so the best chance for rain will be in new jersey and delaware for tomorrow. for saturday, models have become more consistent with pushing this low offshore a little more quickly so we will see the rain moving out a little faster saturday. the shore forecast looks a little better for saturday than it did yesterday. then we go into sunday and the rain really moves away and everyone should be seeing just about a mostly sunny day on sunday. here's a look at future rainfall. majority of it is going to be confined to south jersey and delaware, maybe around an inch in some of the highest amounts but now we look farther to the south and that's where we expect a majority and the heaviest rain to be pretty well far south of the area. for tonight, more clouds around, late rain. mostly south of philadelphia. 68 for the low in philadelphia,

right now on "nbc 10 news at 5:00," this south jersey lake is usually filled with young campers, but on this sunny summer day, kids have been kept out because something in the water could be making them sick. "nbc 10 news at 5:00" starts right now. the campers have what appears to be a stomach bug. >> hundreds of kids are being kept away until officials figure out what's going on here. several ymca camps are held on the lake in medford, burlington county. nbc 10's cydney long has more. >> reporter: sky force 10 high above medford lakes camps where

there's no splashing or swimming allowed until further notice. >> it's not a big deal. problems happen. it's like a school. if someone gets a stomach bug, you get a stomach bug. if it's in the lake, it happens in all the lakes. we haven't had a lot of water runoff. the bacteria grows with not a lot of rain. >> reporter: parents we spoke to the are taking the swimming ban in stride. this as a half dozen kids and adults began feeling ill sunday. the camps decided on their own to close the lake and have the waters tested for potential bacteria by the county health department. >> the preschoolers don't go in the water. >> reporter: the water samples were collected tuesday. it's not uncommon for lakes in the area to turn swimmers away. two summers ago, lakes in medford had goose droppings run off into the lake that spiked bacteria levels, banning swimmers for a few days. for karen hughes -- >> i guess i would be
