hour. >> i don't have to ask if you watched the debate. we were texting each other during the debate. it was fascinating at times, exhausting at times and it is the subject of our top story. we have the big moments, the night's impact on the race moving forward beginning with nbc national correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning. if you were looking for a good debate night to kick off the political season, this one didn't disappoint. it was raucus, feisty. donald trump debating for the first time didn't shy away from the spotlight. afterward he complained some of the questions to him were much tougher than to anybody else. he said at times they were simply not nice. it started with a show of hands but only donald trump raised his. >> mr. trump -- >> reporter: re fusing to commit he won't run as an independent. >> you can't say tonight you will not make the pledge. >> i cannot say. >> reporter: rand paul quickly pounced. >> he's already hedging his bets

because he's used to buying politicians. >> well, i have given him plenty of money. >> reporter: trump also tangled with moderators after disparaging comments about women. >> you have called women fat pigs, dogs, slobs and animals. >> only rosie o'donnell. the problem this country has is being politically correct. >> reporter: o'donnell tweeting, "try explaining that 2 ur kids." jeb bush dismissed trump as a divisive figure. >> we'll win when we unite people with a hopeful message. >> reporter: john kasich declined to attack the frontrunner. >> donald trump is hitting a nerve. people are frustrated, they are fed up. he's got his solutions. some of us have other solutions. >> reporter: democrat hillary clinton was a target they could all agree on. >> how will hillary clinton lecture me about living paycheck to paycheck? i was raised paycheck to paycheck. >> reporter: trump, who contributed to the clinton foundation batted away questions about whether he was too cozy

with the clintons. >> with hillary clinton i said be at my wedding and she came. do you know why? she had no choice because i gave. >> reporter: one of the night's sharpest exchanges, chris christie blasting rand paul for fighting to put limits on government surveillance. >> when you are sitting in a subcommittee just blowing hot air about this, you can say things like that. >> i don't trust president obama with our records. i know you gave him a big hug. if you want to give him a big hug again, go right ahead. >> the hugs i remember are the hugs i guay to the families who lost people on september 11. those are the hugs i remember. >> reporter: the debate touched on everything from immigration to planned parenthood. >> i defunded planned parenthood long before any of these videos came out. >> reporter: the night wasn't without lighter moments like this from neurosurgeon ben carson. >> i'm the only one to separate siamese twins, take out half of a bryn but you would think in washington someone beat me to it.

>> reporter: this morning donald trump was complimentary about what he described as worthy opponents including jeb bush, marco rubio and ben carson. unclear what this will do to shake up the field going forward. carly fiorina was very strong in the earlier debate. the republicans aren't on stage together again, matt, until next month. >> peter alexander, thank you very much. senator marco rubio joins us now from cleveland. senator, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> i have been reading some of the reviews on your performance last night. i will pa are a phrase and sum them up. people said you may not have broken out last night but you certainly answered in a positive way some questions about your electability. are you happy with that review? >> yeah. with the reviews that matter are not the pundits. it's the people watching that have to make the decision at the ballot box. this is the first time we'll debate together. there will be multiple other opportunities. this is a long campaign for the

most important political office in the world. i was honored to be a part of it. i'm looking forward to future ones. >> donald trump refused to rule out a third party run. he says he's using it as leverage to make sure the party treats him well. sounds like a threat to me. how does it impact the way you and other candidates take him on directly? >> it doesn't impact it at all. i'm not running against any of the other people on that stage. i'm running for president. i will continue to do what i did last night. i will tell people where i stand and what i will do if elected and voters decide. that's the great thing about living in this republic is the voters decide. what other people are doing doesn't necessarily impact our strategy or what we are saying. >> let me ask this way. as you stood on stage last night listening to what he said, watching what he did, did you find yourself thinking, if i am not fortunate to be the nominee of this party i could

enthusiastically support donald trump to be the next president of the united states and commander in chief? >> yeah, look. i think i have confidence in this process. i have confidence that the republican nominee is going to be a republican. i have confidence that the nominee will be someone who is optimistic about america. i don't believe america is losing to everybody. i think this is the greatest country in the world. i know we have problems, we have challenges, no doubt. >> right. >> who would we trade places with? what country in the world would we trade places with? that's the message that will ultimately win. >> i will ask you again with all due respect. do you think donald trump has what it takes to be the president and commander in chief? >> i don't know. i don't think that's been answered about anybody in the race. i feel confident about me. but that's why we have a campaign. that's why we are going to have multiple debates and people have to answer questions. over the next few months that's what the campaign is about is determining and answering questions like that. none of us are owed the position by virtue of our fame or how

much money we have raised. we have to go out and convince people. last night was part of the process where voters get to see us answer tough questions and from that make a decision about whether they are going to turn over the most important office in the world to one of us. >> senator marco rubio. i appreciate your time this morning. thank you very much. good luck. >> thank you, matt. >> all right. which candidates expect to get a boost from their performances last night? chuck todd is nbc's political director and moderator of "meet the press." >> good morning. >> i have heard more than one pundit say i'm out of the game predicting what will happen with donald trump. the rules don't appear to apply. do you think he helped or hurt himself? >> it was an audience of mostly republicans. yes, there were others that wanted to watch the event. and to start off by saying i wouldn't necessarily stay in the republican party, you have automatically shut down your ability to grow your support.

look, i understand why donald trump is upset with the moderators. they put him on the defensive from the beginning making that the first question. put him on his heels, no doubt about it. i think it will hurt him. but you're right. he defied political gravity before. >> people thought it was a big night. it had to be a big night for jeb bush. did he live up to what he needed to do? >> for the first time he looked like he didn't like to be there. sometimes you get the feeling just going, gosh, i can't believe i've got to do some of the things i have to do before i campaign the way i want to campaign in a general election. but i thought the moment with trump peter highlighted in the package there where he stood by his criticism of trump and when trump had the chance to -- you thought maybe he would pounce, trump acknowledged it was a fair criticism on tone. let me tell you why. it guay jave jeb the moment. it could have been a bad moment for jeb and it was a good one. >> a couple of hours, you try to

get to the substance. you can take the measure of people in a situation like that. for you, who was the stand out? who helped themselves last night? >> the person who helped himself the most was john kasich. this is a guy nobody knew a lot about. we kept saying, hey, watch this guy, watch this guy. he's going to get that second, third look. marco rubio, there were concerns from some of the establishment, the elite going where's he been? he's gone away. he had a good night. scott walker, sometimes you wondered where he went. for a frontrunner he didn't make any mistakes but for a frontrunner he disappeared too often. as debates go on he needs to look for alpha, presidential. >> let me not let you leave without asking about a big headline last night. chuck schumer said he will oppose the iran nuclear deal. how big of a blow is it to the president's attempt to get it through congress? >> he tried to do one favor. he announced it during the republican debate. he tried to bury the news a

little bit. he's clearly not campaigning against the deal. the fact that the other new york senator who rarely splits with him on foreign policy, kristen gillibrand, she came out for the teal and three, four hours later schumer came in. he's opposing it but seems to be trying to oppose it, not campaign against it. if you're the white house, could have been worse. >> you have a lot for "meet the press." we'll see you sunday for sure. coming up, we'll talk live to donald trump. >> we want to welcome natalie back from rio. she has a look at the headlines. >> thank you. russia is being blamed for a sophisticated cyber attack on the unclassified e-mail network of the u.s. military's joint staff. u.s. officials telling nbc news that the system has been shut down and taken off line for nearly two weeks. the cyber attack affected some 4,000 military and civilian personnel. the officials stress no classified information was seized or compromised and that only unclassified accounts and

e-mails were hacked. there is growing concern here in new york city this morning over the outbreak of legionnaire's disease. ten people tied and more than a hundred have been sickened by the disease. dr. natalie a strzar is here. what is legionnaire's and how is it spread? >> it is a bacterial infection that can cause pneumonia. we see roughly around 8,000 to 18,000 cases per year. it is not spread person to person. that's important for the viewers to understand. you can get legionnaire's or the pneumonia by inhaling mist contaminated with bacteria. >> what are the symptoms? >> the symptoms are consistent with pneumonia. shortness of breath, chest pain when you take a deep breath in, cough, fever. some people can have flu-like symptoms with headache, nausea and diarrhea. >> how is it treated? spimt's treatable when diagnosed early, of course. antibiotics from two to three weeks with a number of different

would you get involved to stop him or her? the results might surprise you. that's all next week here on "today." >> let's begin with republican presidential front it is runner donald trump joining us by phone. mr. trump, good morning. thanks for waking up early for us. >> good morning, savannah. >> we have a poll that has you winning this debate. a time magazine poll says you won the debate. here is not good news. a fox focus group after the debate, likely republican voters. some called you mean, angry, bombastic and one voter said, you know, i liked him when i came in here because he wasn't a politician. but right now he skirted around questions better than a life long politician ever had. are you happy with your performance last night? >> i am. that was done by a guy named frank luntz who is a real dunce, frankly. i don't know where he finds the people. i think he hand picks them to say whatever he wants.

it didn't jive with anything. >> the focus group had 14 people that liked you. >> savannah, depends where you get them. i can do focus groups and say do this and that. he came to my office looking for a job, looking for work. then all of the sudden he's doing focus -- i had no interest in him. i don't believe in that focus group. it was an unbelievable evening. i had a great time. some of the folks i met were fantastic. we had a great evening. >> one of the big headlines of the night came early on when you decided not to take the pledge not to run as an independent if you were not to get the republican nomination. you said later to a host on fox news the reason is you want to keep leverage in case the republican party doesn't treat you well. i guess my question is to you, is it more important that the republican party treats you well or that they win back the white house? everyone thinks an independent run means a democrat definitely

keeps the white house. >> well, savannah, many people want me to do the independent thing. i want to run as a republican. right now as you know because i watch your polls all the time with great interest, but i'm way out in front. i'm i enjoying it, having fun, getting great respect from the leaders of the republican party. they see what's happening. there is a movement going on. the people are tired of politicians that are all talk, no action. that's what's happening. i want to run as a republican. i want to win the primaries. i want to run as a republican. i think we'll win. certainly that gives us the best chance of winning. i don't want to do the independent thing. i do keep it and it is leverage. there are positive things about keeping it. but it's not something i want to do. >> you were challenged a bit on some of the liberal positions you have taken in the past, the fact that you were once self-identified as a dechlt you said, i have evolved the way reagan evolved. my question is how do republican

voters know you won't evolve again? in other words, they are looking for a candidate of principle. ho how do they know you won't change your mind and go back to being a democrat? >> i'm the one who brought it up. they say you were a democrat. if you look at new york city where i live that's mostly democrat. you will rarely see anything else but democrats get into office. that's where i live. but i absolutely have gone the other way. i use the example of ronald reagan all the time. not only was he a democrat, he was on the liberal side of being a democrat. i have evolved. i'm where i am. i'm leading in the polls. i want to run as a republican, not an independent. i think it will work out well. so far it is. even oraccording to your polls. >> some of the question s had to do with prior comments you made about women. do you have a problem with women? is that an issue in the general election? the winner of the white house

has to win a huge portion of the female vote. >> no. i don't think i do at all. in fact, if you look at "the apprentice" which nbc renewed a and wanted me to do but i said i'm not doing it because i'm running for president. you are not allowed to because of equal time laws. if you look, the audience was women. by the way, some of the names mentioned were not names that were familiar to me. we are going to look into that. frankly, the biggest applause of the evening was when i mentioned the name rosie o'donnell. the place went wild. it was the loudest applause of the evening. people got a kick out of it. it was an amazing evening and probably got tremendous ratings. >> you were asked about your past donations to democrats, specifically donations to hillary clinton. you said, look, i make political donations because i want to get something in return. when asked specifically what you got in return from hillary clinton you said, well, i wanted her to come to my wedding so she did. >> i said that as a joke.

i was joking obviously. they said, give us an example. i said, well, she came to my wedding -- they both came and that was nice. but as a businessman, don't forget i have been doing this now for approximately two months. i have never run for office before. i have been doing it for two months. as a businessman i would contribute, like other businessmen, i would contribute to everybody and that's a fault of this country. you contribute and people two years later, three years later when you need help, they help you. you don't contribute, they don't help you. that's sad but a problem with this country. it's a problem that has to be rectified. >> you made no secret you didn't like some of the questions. you felt they were tough, unfair questions. to that i just wonder if you don't like questions coming from commentators during a debate are you ready for the toughness of

not only running for president but being president? >> i thought the questions were unfair. i can live with it. probably you're number one in the polls and they ask tougher questions. even the other candidates got off stage and said, you know, it's amazing that the questions were so unfair. they all felt how unfair the questions were. i enjoyed the evening. i thought they were unfair but that's okay. it was an amazing evening and i think it was a success. time magazine did a poll and the numbers were astronomical in my favor. maybe in your nbc poll i will even go up in two weeks when you reveal it again. >> we'll watch it for sure, mr. trump. thanks for being with us. >> thank you very much, savannah. >> onward. >> onward. >> to the next debate and the next few weeks and months on the campaign trail. >> al has a check of the weather. >> political heat and weather heat out there.

the humidity has dropped down to 66%. 74 degrees running a little bit cooler, seeing winds gusting to 23 miles an hour. still some clouds over delaware and south jersey. those will be slow to clear today. >> we continue to follow this breaking news out of philadelphia's overbrook section where investigators are trying to figure out who shot a bakery owner in the face. they tell us someone shot the woman inside the best cake kosher bakery along haverford avenue around 6:00 a.m. investigators say she called 911 and managed to get outside. she's not able to talk because of her injuries, but she did hold up two fingers when officers got there and police are trying to figure out what she was trying to say. she's in the hospital right now. we'll bring you updates as soon as we get them and have them for you on our nbc 10 news app. today jurors will continue deliberations in the trial of former eagle irving frfryaditi roy. they accuse him of masterminding an alleged bank and fraud scheme. they asked for more testimony to be reread.

cheesesteak or hoagie announced it's leaving philadelphia. amoroso's bakery moving to camden county and laying off dozens of workers in the process. amoroso's says it has outgrown the bakery on south 55th street in southwest philadelphia so it will be moving its operations to bellmawr starting in october. a new company is being formed with that move so the current positions will be terminated. the folks who work in southwest philly will have to reapply for their jobs with the new company. a camden county man is recovering this morning after he was lost in the woods for days. police have been looking for james wharton since tuesday morning. he called 911 twice to say he was lost in the woods in winslow township. that was the last that they had heard from him until last night. officers found wharton along some train tracks off williamstown road and took him to the hospital to be checked out. they tell us that he was in good spirits. i'm rosemary connors. we'll have another update in about 25 minutes. remember, you can always get the latest news and weather with the

taking a look at the headlines a wake-up call for parents as kids head back to school. the cdc says schools are starting too early with 20% of high schools beginning at the recommended start time of 8:30 a.m. sleep deprooied teens suffer from class and are at risk for serious health problems. the cdc recommends parents set a firm sleep schedule and limit screen time at night. at least ten people are dead after an outbreak of legionnaire's disease in new york. officials say another hundred people are sick with the disease caused by breathing in air contaminated by certain bacterias. the outbreak has been traced to five air conditioning systems. health officials say legionnaire's is easily treated with antibiotics but can pose a serious risk to people with

weaker immune systems. a senate report released this week is urging the government to crack down on airline seats that are often unfair or hidden from travellers. according to the report, consumers are in the tadark abo air travel. some say air travellers are being nickel and dimed to death. the report says there appears to be no correlation between the cost of checked bag fees and the airlines that incur the fees. >> michigan wolverines head coach jim harbaugh already getting tough questions from the media. take a look. >> what's your question? >> how much milk do i have to drink to be big enough to be quarterback? >> can i give you a hug? that's a great question. i love that you're thinking about that. drink as much milk as your little belly can hold. >> i love that. that was 6-year-old brady

scattered clouds. more sunshine in pennsylvania than in delaware and south jersey. warm this afternoon, 80s later today. sunshine, bright this weekend. low humidity, 87 on saturday. a nice day sunday, just a little bit warmer up to 88 degrees. showers, thunderstorms, could return later monday and are likely tuesday with a high of 83. plenty of sunshine wednesday and thursday. have a great day. that's your latest weather. time to wrap up our one year to rio week on "today." i'm going to show you how to make brazilian-style skirt steak with chimichurri sauce. i love doing this. it's quick and easy. you can do a lot of it ahead of time and have a great time. first of all let's start here. you have skirt steak, you could use flank steak, cilantro,

oregano, lemon. this is the skirt steak. again, just a great cut of meat. it's economical, cooks quick. cut this in half. one of the secret ingredients is brazilian salt, salgroso. look at the big chunks. that's fantastic stuff. you can do it outside on the grill. it's probably easier. but it's still simple. this is all you will do. basically put this salt side down. >> you didn't do pepper? just salt. >> just salt. you could do pepper but there is other stuff coming. >> you have the chimichurri. >> let it go for three, four minutes on both sides. once you flip it, put on more salt. take this off. first of all, you want to let the meat rest. the reason is basically because the juices have now come up close to the surface. you want to give it ten minutes

so they go back in. all right? we'll slice it in a minute. but in the meantime while this is resting you want to take your herbs. >> make your chimichurri. >> you can make your chimichurri. you can do it ahead of time. wash your herbs, wrap them in a paper towel and put them in the fridge. i like to roughly chop. take olive oil. >> this is so delicious. >> delicious. >> i mean, you can taste every flavor. >> throw that in. >> olive oil, lemon juice. you have ore g ano. >> garlic. i like a lot. and red pepper flakes. mix this up. you can do this ahead of time actually. let it sit in the fridge. >> cool. >> it's great deal. >> salt and pepper? >> i like it like this. you can add salt and pepper if you like. you want to slice skirt steak, flank steak against the grain.

♪ that will wake you up. we are talking about sleep. last week i shared an experience that i woke up in the middle of the night and realized one of my stove burners was on and i put a pot on it. at first i thought an intruder has broken in but i was sleep walking. >> we invited dr. carol ash from meridian health to help us aleve yat common sleep disorders. good morning. >> good morning. >> what do you think was going on with tamron's body? >> glad you didn't say in my head. >> maybe in your head. you never know. what could have triggered a first time episode? >> this is a common phenomenon. we call them parasomnian which is any abnormal behavior. you have two different circuits. one set of gears for the wakeful activities and one for sleep. the gears can get stuck in the off and on position. anything you can do during

wakefulness, any activity can present itself in sleep with the conscious awareness of the process. it's still in the sleep state. so you could imagine what you could get up in the middle of the night and do. >> later in the day i started thinking about what i was doing before i went to bed. i was thinking about what i would cook for breakfast. i had a whole conversation about what am i going to make. i think i woke up to make the breakfast. i don't know. meanwhile, natalie mentioned we heard from a lot of people including a viewer on twitter who said she was sleep walking when she washed her hair with scalding water and burned her scalp. that's terrifying and part of the fear i have. >> you can get up and certainly some things could be funny. i have had patients that in the night find themselves on the lawn in their underwear. you want to go to bed with clean underwear. you could do dangerous things. there isn't conscious awareness. you could injure yourself trying to cook or drive.

people will have sex while asleep. they have no idea they are doing it. >> are some of these hereditary? tamron said her mom used to sleep walk as a child. >> it runs in families. we believe there is a genetic factor. some of the things that cause us to present -- anything that causes your sleep to be disrupted. often times when sleep is disrupted, if you are stressed these things present more likely. the gears will get stuck between transition from sleep and awake. >> natalie mentioned her friend's son has sleep walking and night terrors. >> let's start with a child. what do you do? >> fist you want to get information. if you have these problems this is something that's dangerous that could injure you. you want to deal with it right away. children typically grow out of it. it's reassuring parents that it's okay. if the child is up wandering around you want to gently coax them back to bed. if you are around them they might be irritable, angry. that's not a situation you want

blowing, it has been picking up as we head into the later morning hours. we'll see those gusts continue. winds now at 9 miles an hour. we have seen winds topping 20 miles an hour with the gusts as the humidity drops, now 78 degrees and 58% humidity. >> new from overnight philadelphia police are investigating a deadly shooting. they say an 18-year-old man got into an argument with a woman. she left and came back with a group of friends and then authorities say she shot the man at croskey and berk streets in north philadelphia. the man died a short time later. no arrests in the case. philly police are trying to figure out what happened during a home invasion in west oak lane. authorities say two men were armed with guns when they demanded money inside of a house on cornelius street and while they were searching the home, ransacking the house two shots were fired. it's unclear whether the two men fired the shots or if it was the homeowners. nobody was hurt. so far no arrests in this case either. i'm rosemary connors.
