to penn presbyterian medical center. we're working to learn what led to the shooting. no arrests have been made. in north philadelphia, we're learning about another 16-year-old boy in critical condition after being shot once in the back and once in the arm on sergeant street. the teen was transported to the hospital. we'll post new updates online and on the nbc 10 app. i'm denise nakano. we have new information about another story out of california that you're likely to hear a lot about tomorrow. a banner plane crashed in compton, colorado. the pilot died. it was reportedly carrying an eagle fan banner scheduled to fly over the practice near the crash site. we have not been able to confirm it was actually an eagles fan banner. witnesses told the l.a. times it

was a bud light banner. a tweet from a local dj saying he hired the plane started the talk about the eagles banner. a statement from the dj, it is still to be determined whether or not the plane involved in the accident was the same plane contracted for the flight over oxnard, or if the accident prevented our flight from happening. the faa is investigating but won't say what was on the banner. we're working to reach more witnesses tonight. tonight, we are counting down to the pope's visit to philadelphia. he'll touch down in the city in 47 days, on saturday, september 26th. it's not just the city of philadelphia preparing for the pope's visit. with road closures extending into the suburbs, including city avenue, which will be shut down for about two miles. it has neighbors and businesses concerned, and nbc 10's randy

gyllenhaal is live in bala tonight. >> reporter: we've been dropping into different towns and suburbs to see how it will affect them. we're in lower marion, where city avenue is going to be closed for the whole weekend. all these businesses that line up and down the street are going to have to make the decision, whether they stay open. for at least two days, this busy two-mile stretch of city avenue will be much quieter. no traffic. the road will be shut down, and some businesses say that will force them to close. >> there's not going to be any classes. >> i think it's a good thing. it's just for the weekend. >> reporter: the closures are necessary, since pope francis will be spending the night here, just off city avenue, at the saint charles seminary. each day, his motorcade will make its way through lower

marion. for neighbors, the question is, how much extra traffic will they see on their block? >> i guess i was expecting it, except for the fact that, you know, getting around is going to definitely be a challenge. >> reporter: local officials are warning the traffic spillover could be severe, since city avenue will be shut down. that means local roads like route 23 and montgomery avenue will take a lot of the congestion, as people try to avoid all of the detours. the township released heez doth documents, warning of gas shortages. some families say they'll be getting out of dodge in time. >> we're going to go to vacation and stay at a beach house with our friends. >> reporter: probably smart. >> yeah. i heard there's going to be like a million people. >> reporter: to be clear, we also spoke with a lot of families very excited to see the pope. hoping to get a sneak peek over the fence as he comes into the

up. dozens gathered in a call for justice. they celebrated what would have been a birthday for a toddler killed in a hit and run three months ago. nbc 10 in west kensington. neighbors and loved ones made posters and t-shirts in honor of david. this is a spot where the boy and his mother were hit by an suv in april while crossing the street. today would have been his third birthday. his mother says she's still recovering from her injuries. she tells nbc 10 her son always enjoyed playing in the neighborhood. >> he was always in the park, playing basketball. standing here outside and always, you know, playing with other kids. he was supposed to start school this year at the light house. now look, he's not here with us. >> police say the owners of the suv lent it to a 19-year-old at

the time of the deadly crash. still, there's been no arrests. police believe speed was a factor in a crash that killed a man behind the wheel of an suv. the victim was a college student driving three friends after a night out on south street. they say he lost control, hit two trees and flipped over near 4th and lumbar. the 21-year-old was speeding and not wearing a seat belt. his three passengers were not hurt. from our jersey shore bureau, the coast guard rescued two people and a dog. the coast guard sent us these pictures today. this is three miles from the shoreline. crews and ocean city policemanage epoliceman a policeman -- police managed to get everyone off. smoke was rising from the coastline. the people and the pup are fine. police are trying to figure out

what started the fire. today, the philadelphia eagles held the last of their two open training camp practices with thousands coming out. it was this banner plane that stole the show and got fans riled up. ron burke joins us. who was responsible for the plane? >> that banner was paid for in part by new cowboys defensive end, hardy, adding fuel to a rivalry already burning hot. you can see the players looking up at the banner that read, we still dem boyz. eagles were not impressed by the message or the player that sponsored us. >> we know the heat between us, it was going to happen. we heard rumors about it but thought it was going to be during training camp. made you feel a certain way, especially on a military for that to that -- happen.

a big loss for the sports world. pro football hall of famer frank gifford died today in his home in connecticut. his family says the legend died suddenly of natural causes this morning. during the 1950s and '60s, gifford was a centerpiece of both the new york giants offense and defense. gifford earned the league's mvp award in 1956, after leading the giants to a national championship. he went on to a successful second career as a broadcaster for monday night football, alongside howard and don meredith. frank gifford was 84 years old. a salute to our nation's military at lincoln financial field today. it was military day, with the eagles honoring the men and women who defended our country. many fans were on hand since it

expect the heaviest rain. an update on the police-involved shooting we told you about yesterday. police say it was a trooper who shot and wounded a 14-year-old boy authorities believe was firing gunshots on a street. the teen is expected to be okay. a weapon was recovered at the scene. it's not clear if the boy will face any charges. a suspected bu eed burglar e behind bars after leading police on a chase through several towns. bowers was wanted for a burglar. when police tried to stop him, he took off running, went across route 73, and swam across the coshocton river. he was finally caught and arrested. in delaware, police are looking for the man who mugged

an 84-year-old woman in newark. it happened at the kohl's store yesterday afternoon. a man came up behind the woman and grabbed her purse and pushed her to the ground. he drove off in a pick-up truck. the woman was take tn to a hospital and expected to be okay. voters will head to the polls this week and elect the candidate to finish the term of a state representative who designed after a corruption investigation. michelle brownlee resigned her position as state rep of the district after pleading guilty in connection to a cash for favor sting operation. five other elected state officials have been charged in the corruption investigation. the candidate who wins brownlee's former post will serve out the rest of her term and be up for reelection in the spring. three candidates are vying for the open seat. donna is an attorney and former special assistant to the city council president. republican adam lang is a

it's been one year since michael brown was shot and killed by police in ferguson, missouri. tonight, the community paused with brown's family to remember. hundreds, including brown's father, marched and gathered at the scene of the shooting. brown was killed by ferguson police officer darren wilson after a struggle.

killed eight people in the home. take a look at this new security video moments before a police officer shot and killed an unarmed college student in texas. 19-year-old christian taylor vandalizing a car in arlington on friday. the man jumped on the windshield, peeled it off and slid in. he walked away and then drove an suv into a glass door according to police. responding officers found taylor inside the dealership. they say he refused orders to lie down. investigators say after a struggle, a rookie officer still in field training, shot taylor. arlington's police chief asked the fbi to join the investigation. it's been 70 years since the world's second largest atomic bomb was dropped. today, the city of nagasaki, japan, marked the day with a ceremony. the bomb killed more than 74,000

people instantly during world war ii. japan surrendered six days later. today, there was a moment of silence and the ringing of a bell at the time the bomb detonated. the french military searched the indian ocean off reunion ilond tod island today looking for debris from flight mh370. a plane scoured the surrounding waters for any sign of 777. authorities are searching by plane and by boat. a wing fragment was found on the shore of reunion nine days ago. malaysian officials say it's part of the missing jet, but officials in other countries have not confirmed it. the families of two florida boys who disappeared at sea called off their search. the coast guard spent a full week looking for austin stephanos and perry cohen. they went missing on a fishing trip on july 24th. the family launched a private

14-3. it was a thrilling day for everybody at eagles camp. to salute the service of our nation's military, eagles players took the field wearing camouflage uniforms. then a pregame handshake with players followed by a navy seal parachute jump. army staff sergeant beautifully sang our national anthem. as more than 70 military members held a 70 foot by 80 foot version of the stars and stripes tightly. for our nation's bravest, a day they'll never forget. >> it's surreal. probably one of the best things i've done ever. >> it's great, great experience. couldn't ask for anything better. >> e-a-g-l-e-s! >> reporter: the day culminated in an exchange of jerseys. >> thank you. it was a once in a lifetime

they came here as enemies of the united states and left as friends. during world war ii, hundreds of thousands of german prisoners were brought to the u.s. in some cases, they were put to work and formed bonds in their communities. as nbc's mark potter reports, those bonds were revealed in a trove of newly released letters. >> reporter: this story of kindness and love begins with the horrors of world war ii. where the allies brought hundreds of thousands of prisoners to the u.s. one of the camps holding more than 300 german prisoners was built on a family farm in tennessee. today, it's a quiet neighborhood. >> it was the area where the tents were located. there would have been a bashed wire fence around them with the towers. >> reporter: the biggest historical treasure from the era was found decades later in the farm owner's house. in lynn's great-aunt's closet.
