standing over and i couldn't see what was happening. i walked close and saw a little boy and his eyes were closed. his face was covered in sand. i didn't know what was happening. >> reporter: so far we do not yet know where that boy and his family are from. we are still working to get that information. interestingly, just a couple weeks ago, police in nearby harvey cedars here on long beach island issued a warning on their facebook page, the beach patrol did, about digging deep holes in the sand because of the dangers that they are very unstable and can suddenly collapse. we'll have more for you as we get more information coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> ted, thank you. now to that triple shooting we mentioned in wilmington happened just a short time ago. we know one person is dead. >> our sister station telemundo 62 is live on the scene.

>> reporter: we just talked to police and they tell us a woman and child are in stable condition right now at an unknown hospital at this time. this is the scene we have for you guys at this moment. wilmington police have the street blocked off as they continue to search for answers. they tell us that reports of several gunfire was heard about an hour ago which had many residents running for cover. still unclear as to what was the motive or a description of the suspect or the suspects that caused the shooting. >> i heard a couple gun shots. i just came outside of my house. next thing you know i hear a bunch of screaming so i walk around the corner, right there to the corner, all of a sudden i see a bunch of cops coming in. i started asking questions trying to figure out what's going on. it's dead around here. >> reporter: police are on the scene and they tell us they will be searching for any more clues or evidence, talking to

witnesses. they tell us they are not sure right now whether the shooting happened inside the property or outside but that's all the information we have at this time. live in wilmington, delaware, nbc 10 news. nothing but gray skies over city hall today in philadelphia. the clouds kept many people inside. overcast skies down the shore giving folks a lot of room to stretch out on the beach in cape may. >> the clouds, a sign of wet weather on the way. we saw christian there wet already. >> yeah. the showers moving through wilmington. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking it all for us. >> this is just the beginning of some wet weather we will be seeing in the next 24 to 36 hours. it's cloudy across philadelphia now. we have managed to stay rain-free in the city throughout the day but that's not going to last long. you can see this area of rain over wilmington. most of the rain earlier today

afternoon. a pickup truck slammed into a tractor trailer. you can see the truck ripped apart. we are waiting to hear if the driver of the truck is okay. traffic is now getting by. a suspected drunk driver crashed into a man's home right here, injuring herself and the man who owns the house. the impact set the man's house on fire. nbc 10's doug shimell live this afternoon in feasterville where the homeowner is staying with friends. you learned this is the latest hardship for him? >> reporter: he says he is not sure how he will recover from two life-altering events in just the span of a week. >> all of a sudden i thought i heard an explosion behind me. i thought it was a gas explosion. >> reporter: carmen had been watching tv in his basement sunday night. >> glass flying and it knocked me right out of the seat. i hit a table with my knee and apparently i got cut with flying glass. >> reporter: police say

34-year-old katherine ryan was later charged with dui for smashing her nissan altima through the wall of his house on bu bustleton avenue. >> i don't need this at this time in my life to be forced out of my own house. >> reporter: the 84-year-old retired philadelphia police officer and air force and naval reserve veteran had just lost his wife phyllis of 57 years last week to breast cancer. >> the mass cards, our marriage pictures, you name it. >> reporter: carmen says looking at his house, he knows the outcome would have been different without phyllis looking out for him. >> she's always looking out for me. >> reporter: carmen says he will get through all of this with the help of a great family. i'm doug shimell, nbc 10 news. the country's attention is shifting back to ferguson, missouri today.

one person is in critical condition there after detectives shot him during protests overnight. nbc 10's keith jones is live in our digital operations center with details. >> reporter: we just learned police in st. louis county have declared a state of emergency. this comes now after peaceful protests turned violent last night. a warning for you, you might find the next video disturbing. that dramatic video shows the scene when the shots were fired which started as a peaceful protest marking the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of michael brown. it turned violent when a pan began to shoot at officers. police fired back critically injuring the man. st. louis county police said this type of violence makes it difficult to enact positive change. >> we need the public's help. we can't do it by ourselves. we have to have the community out here helping us, working with us to identify this and make this stop.

>> reporter: the chief said a small group of people are intent on making sure the community doesn't have peace. today, officers combed the scene where more than 60 rounds went off last night. we are also learning that a civil disobedience march a few hours ago ended with police arresting some demonstrators. attorney general loretta lynch took to twitter to condemn the violence, saying quote, violence obscures any message of peaceful protest and places the community as well as the officers who seek to protect it in harm's way. michael brown's death one year ago set off weeks of unrest and questions about racial equality and police conduct. last night's violence leaves many questioning just how much progress we have made in the past year and what else needs to be done to move forward. we will continue of course to monitor the situation in ferguson and bring you any updates on air and on the nbc 10 news app. live in the digital operations center, keith jones, nbc 10 news. here we are learning more details about the shooting of

three people over the weekend. a man armed with a rifle ran through philadelphia's kensington neighborhood on saturday, firing at anyone in his path. turns out one of the victims was an intended target. one person is dead, two are injured and the shooter is still on the loose. meantime, police make a quick arrest after a man is stabbed to death in another case of weekend violence. police charged a woman from the 2700 block of oakford with the murder of quinton graham. officials tell us the two had been in a relationship. police were called to the grays ferry house early saturday morning. graham was discovered face down in the backyard, stabbed in the chest. convicted on child porn charges. the former head master of a local school is now filing an appeal. christopher wheeler is serving 50 years in jail on 25 counts of child pornography. wheeler was the head master at the tower hill school in wilmington. today, wheeler's lawyer said authorities may have tampered with witnesses to get the warrant they needed to search wheeler's computers. according to the lawyer, there

is no evidence that wheeler viewed the child porn stored on the computer or even knew it was there. an emergency road repair has traffic in a knot near 15th and chestnut street. 15th street south of city hall near chestnut has been closed while workers patch the street. check out why. look at this huge crater. drivers who travel through this part of center city may want to make other plans to avoid some long delays there. drivers who would like to put the brakes on a bridge toll increase will get that chance tonight. officials want to boost the toll on the burlington bristol and tacony palmyra bridges. the toll will double for cash-paying customers from $2 to $4. ez pass customers will pay $3 to cross. meetings at commission headquarters on route 73 at 6:00 tonight. there will be another one tomorrow. the commission is expected to vote on the proposed increase coming up on wednesday. now to our area's preparations for the pope and concerns about parking gridlock. we know that center city will be

virtually impossible to navigate by car but even neighborhoods several miles away are expecting a traffic nightmare as well. here's why. only four of the nine patco stations in new jersey will be open, including broadway, ferry avenue, woodcrest and lindenwold. neighbors who live nearby are concerned that people going to see the pope will be clogging up their streets. south jersey bureau reporter cydney long is live at the wood crest station in cherry hill. cydney, you spoke to residents who are concerned about that parking overflow. tell us about it. >> reporter: i did. they have seen it before. homeowners as you might imagine are concerned that some of their neighborhoods streets, the tight small streets, could become virtual parking lots. take a look at how busy woodcrest station is. this is just on a normal work monday. also businesses are nervous that people trying to catch the train may take over their lots once the patco spots fill up. this is a few hundred footsteps from patco's woodcrest station.

gloria dibiasi knows what gridlock feels on her street. >> every car was here. everything was just really crazy. >> reporter: people who live in and work around woodcrest station saw it back in 2008 when the phillies won the world series. >> people were coming up here and just parking everywhere on this street. i know it will probably be the same. >> reporter: ferry avenue residents and business owners are also concerned about what could be a nightmare of parking congestion for people passionate about seeing pope francis. cherry hill police are strategizing today as to how it will handle parking concerns, because with an anticipated half million expected to crowd the parkway, for a glimpse at the pontiff, patco has only 8,000 parking spaces at woodcrest, lindenwold and ferry avenue combined. >> what we will ask people to do is make sure they don't park here so that our customers can still come in and out. i know there will be a major problem, though.

we will anticipate that. we will have enough people on hand to make sure we let people know they can't park here. >> reporter: tom wants to be able to do business on what will be a big weekend. >> that's what we plan to do, have shipments come a little earlier so they won't be a problem or add to the problem of traffic. >> i just hope everybody stays safe because in this world today, nothing is 100% secure. >> reporter: patco recommends coordinating carpooling or getting someone to drop you off to ease the gridlock that weekend. we are also asking patco as well as south jersey police agencies if they are coordinating any organized bussing or drop-off efforts and we will let you know just as soon as we find out. i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> if you missed septa's deadline to sign up for regional rail pope passes you have a second chance. septa tells nbc 10 that it's preparing for round two of the regional rail lottery for anyone who was not selected the first time. those who did win passes last

week had until about an hour ago to purchase them. a septa spokeswoman says lottery entries have been lower than expected but septa believes more people will eventually decide to take mass transit as they learn more details about the papal visit that weekend. meanwhile, a separate lottery begins this week for the norristown high speed line and the route 101 and 102 trolley lines for septa. the passes will be good from september 26th through the 28th. this lottery will be open on wednesday and septa will notify the winners this friday. the nbc 10 news app has everything you need to know about the pope's visit including all road closures, information about mass transit and the pope's itinerary. one month after the pope's visit, the dalai lama will be in philadelphia. we just learned when tickets will go on sale to see him. wednesday, you can begin scooping up tickets for two public events, one at lasalle university, the other at temple university. the religious leader will be in

philadelphia in late october to receive the liberty medal at the national constitution center. tickets for that event become available in september. for more information, tap on the nbc 10 news app. now to decision 2016. as presidential candidate donald trump claims a controversial comment he made is much ado about nothing, says he's not sorry after last week's presidential debate, trump says that moderator megyn kelly had quote, blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her whatever. many found the comment insulting to women, suggesting she was hormonal. now the republican candidate says the uproar is being fueled by the press and this morning on "today" he said his remarks weren't meant to be much of an insult. >> i didn't even finish the answer because i wanted to get on to the next point, but i was referring to or if i finished it, i was going to say ears or nose. >> a poll conducted after the debate shows trump held his lead in the pool of republican

candidates. one candidate surged way ahead in the polls after that debate. nbc news online poll put senator ted cruz in second place now among the republican candidates. the poll of engaged voters gave cruz a seven-point boost after the debate. according to the nbc poll, trump is in the lead with 23%. cruz next with 13%. neurosurgeon ben carson, who saw a bump as well, is at 11%. tied for fourth, marco rubio and carly fiorina, both at 8%. a $350 billion proposal aims to reduce student debt and make two-year community college tuition free. hillary clinton wants states to invest in higher education in exchange for federal money. >> no family and no student should have to borrow to pay tuition at a public college or university. >> clinton says students with debt should be able to refinance

at a lower rate. clinton, one of five candidates running for the democratic nomination. some voters in philadelphia will head to the polls tomorrow to elect a candidate to finish the term of a state representative who resigned after a corruption investigation. three candidates are vying for the open seat. democrat donna bullock is an attorney. republican adam lang is a computer engineer. she is not seen here but write-in candidate judith robinson is also running. she's a life-long philadelphia resident and real estate broker. the special election will be held tomorrow. the polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. the district includes the strawberry mansion and spring garden neighborhoods, to name a few. michele brown-lee resigned her he elected position as rep of that district after pleading guilty to a cash for favors sting operation. five other elected state officials have been charged in the corruption investigation. the candidate who wins her

former post will serve out the rest of her term and be up for re-election in the spring. we had a really nice, comfortable weekend but the clouds moved back and showers as well, some places getting many hours of rain during the day today. we have some more coming in the next couple hours. we have heavy rain overnight for a good bit of the area and some thunderstorms during the day on tuesday. the overcast conditions continue. it's been pretty threatening all day in philadelphia but we haven't seen the rain yet. it's about to come. 78 degrees, feels like 80 because of the humidity is pretty high but the clouds have kept the temperature down, barely above 70 degrees in allentown and reading, west chester, it's 73 degrees. that's the warmest they have been all day. 80 degrees in bensalem, one of the only places getting up to 80

degrees today. the humidity is up as well. even more so tomorrow. with the wind coming in off the ocean, the shore areas are in the 70s, too. that will continue tonight and into tomorrow. this is the area of showers that you see, if anything, it's getting a little bit smaller as the stronger system starts approaching. chester county, delaware county, northern new castle county, getting some rain and just patchy very light stuff in new jersey. but right now, portions of chester county getting the most rain, some of it going into salem county now. the real heavy stuff is back in ohio and west virginia. you see the yellow and red. showers and thunderstorms, some approaching cleveland, that's what will be coming in later tonight. as we go through the night, 10:00, a couple little showers around. if you are headed out for the next two hours, nothing heavy, but overnight, a different

story. there's midnight and it's starting to come into lancaster. by 2:00 a.m., it will be raining and raining hard across a good bit of the area. maybe some thunderstorms waking some people up. and the rain coming down hard enough to produce perhaps some localized flooding in poor drainage areas. but it will just keep moving so the heavy rain won't last a real long time. by 7:00 a.m. as we go toward the heart of the rush hour, the rain will surely be tapering off at the very least in some places, even ending. but the roads will be wet for the morning rush. no doubt about that. we have a little bit of a break with some lighter showers, maybe even a little bit of sun as we go into the middle of the day tomorrow. you don't see much going on there. but in the afternoon, as temperatures go into the upper 80s we may get showers and storms developing again. the stronger the activity is tomorrow morning, the less

likely it is to be severe tomorrow afternoon. so kind of a trade-off there. for tonight, the rain becoming heavy after midnight, 70 for the low in philadelphia. 66 north and west. tomorrow, early in the day, and late in the day, thunderstorms. so a good bit of the day is going to be dry in between. temperatures into the mid 80s depending on how much sunshine we get. then the lower humidity starts to come in on wednesday and then just spectacular day on thursday. another nice day on friday. then the humidity starts going up as we head through the weekend. nothing too awful but it will start getting hotter and hotter. watch this home explode during a rainstorm and police say the blast wasn't caused by weather. who they are now looking for and why. this jersey shore bay turned drown because of a drainage pump issue. why some believe it's a sign of a bigger problem. what health experts say many doctors aren't doing to keep you from developing blood clots.

we have some new video of a scary scene at a local amusement park. a roller coaster at dorney park outside of allentown got stuck earlier today. a viewer sent this video of the talon roller coaster. according to the website, the talon is the tallest and longest inverted roller coaster in the northeast. if you look closely, you can see a few people walking down the steps on the side of the ride to get off. we are told that everybody is okay. an odd interruption at musikfest last night. a chunk of concrete from a nearby bridge landed on the roof of a tent. today crews worked to repair the area. everyone is fine. one side of the tent was closed as a safety precaution. musikfest runs through sunday. the federal aviation administration is investigating another drone sighting near newark liberty international airport. the faa says crews on four

commercial flights spotted a drone as they prepared for landing over the weekend. all the flights landed safely with no delays. flying a drone near an airplane can bring criminal charges and fines of up to $25,000. drones have been reported around other new york area airports in the last couple weeks. to this now. awesome and fresh. just two of the words astronauts use to describe a mouthful of produce. >> they are talking about lettuce grown in space in the garden on board the international space station. the lettuce was picked fresh today as part of nasa's veggo-1 program experiment which focuses on finding how plants grow in orbit, which could help astronauts stay in space longer if they can grow their own meals. half will be packaged, frozen and sent back to earth at a later date so kit can be analyzed. a deadly shooting in wilmington involving a mother, her 5-year-old child and another

breaking news is out of wilmington at this hour. police are on the scene of a triple shooting at north washington and west 7th streets. a mother, her 5-year-old child and another woman were shot. one person is dead. police will only tell us that the person who died is one of the adults. we will have a live report coming up at 5:00. down the shore, rescue crews freed a child after he got buried in a pile of sand in surf

an suv slammed into a cell phone tower and overturned as it went down adams avenue. family members showing up to the scene this morning visibly emotional. police say the suv was speeding, jumped the curb where the people hit a pole and flipped over. a brazen burglary in the middle of the day in philadelphia's overbrook neighborhood. now police suspect this man is involved. surveillance video from the 5400 block of woodbine avenue shows him walking right around the house that was robbed last tuesday. the front door was forced open. the thief took jewelry and electronics. call police if you can help identify the suspect. legislative letters, a new interactive website for people who live in bucks county, giving residents a chance to weigh in on new resolutions or legislation. the information goes straight to county officials. you can find it on the bucks county association township officials home page. from the jersey shore bureau it has finally been approved. after a month-long delay, the atlantic city council voted to allow concerts on the beach later this month. maroon 5 and others are

scheduled to take the stage in just six days. local business owners initially opposed the event after they were cut out of the contract that catered the shows but late last month the catering company announced it would share the work with local businesses and would hire about 250 people for concession jobs. the resolution passed unanimously. maroon 5 takes the outdoor stage this coming sunday and then rascal flatts performs on august 20th. parents, a problem facing your teenagers could turn into something much worse. >> next, the impact doctors say depression can have on their health later in life. plus, what's in the water? this has neighbors worried about what's in the barnegat bay. what environmentalists say is happening, coming up.

police in michigan just released this video of a house exploding last week. it shows a red car crashed into the side of the house.

moments later, there was an explosion. the family who lived in the house was able to get out before the blast. officials are still looking for the person who was driving the car. teens who are depressed or who have bipolar disorder need to see a heart doctor, according to brand new research released minutes ago. it's the first time heart disease has been linked to mood disorders in young people. doctors say because depression is the top reason teens become disabled, a number of kids at risk could be quite high. teens need screening for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes as well as hardening of the arteries. it's unclear why this happens but doctors think it could be the result of cell damage brought on by depression. when it comes to lifestyle, reasons for heart disease, researchers are blaming southern style cooking. sugar and iced tea, biscuits, fried and gravy smothered foods which are common in the south taste great but if you eat that way, your risk of dying in the

cyberattack thought to be linked to russian hackers shut down the system back in july. officials say the computers are free of potentially damaging malware. the breach is blamed on employees who clicked on unknown sources but they say hackers didn't steal any classified information. there are reports that apple plans to hold a big event on september 9th and like past events in the fall is expected to focus on apple's next generation of iphones. analysts expect the new phone to come with a display which senses how hard somebody is tapping on the screen and responds accordingly like the apple watch. there are reports that the new iphone will also have better camera and faster wireless. sources say apple will likely show off the latest ipad as well as the long-awaited successor to apple tv. you may see some big changes the next time you shop at target. >> the retailer is ditching gender labels on toys after customers raised some concerns.

in a statement, target also said it will get rid of references to boys and girls bedding. the signs will just say kids. these changes will start to happen over the next few months. after target says the signs specifying gender were unnecessary. some experts say this may just be the beginning. >> this really speaks to a larger way of thinking that men and women ultimately don't have to be pigeon-holed into a stereotyped role that has been set for us in previous generations. >> target says clothing will still be divided among boys and girls. we just have a little bit of light rain around now but things are going to get a lot more active as we go through the night. during the time a lot of us will be sleeping. some showers today, especially north and west. lehigh valley, berks county, several hours of rain. we've got heavy rain coming overnight for a good bit of the area and some thunderstorms on

tuesday afternoon. look how cloudy it is. it's been that way just about all day. 78 degrees. the temperature kept down by the clouds. the southerly wind making it pretty humid as well, and temperatures even lower to the north and west. the threat tracker as we go through late tonight and tomorrow, there is a threat of some localized flooding in poor drainage areas that.'s the main threat overnight tonight. then tomorrow morning, we could see a little bit of lightning and more tomorrow afternoon, some gusty winds possible but the threat level is not real high with this particular system in the next 24 hours. it's only 68 degrees in kennett square. 71 in wilmington, where it's been raining. 80 degrees in northeast philly where it hasn't been raining. 73 in allentown and quakertown and reading. 71 in coatesville. 67 in oxford in southwestern chester county. you see what the rain is doing. newark, delaware, 70 degrees and

in the 70s at the shore as well. we continue to see some of these light showers getting lighter as they move in toward the philadelphia area. could be a little bit in northern delaware, chester county, going into delaware county, but they're having a hard time coming into philadelphia itself. you can see chester county still getting some. that's moving up into central montgomery county. then there's a break and then we get the real heavy stuff back in west virginia and ohio starting to come into western pennsylvania. that's going to get organized overnight tonight. watch what happens here. as we go through the evening, there's not much around. just a few light showers. late tonight, here comes the main area. by 2:00, 3:00 in the morning, it is pouring across much of the area, maybe even some thunderstorms waking some folks up. you can see it's not a huge area and it's moving. so that limits the flood threat a little bit.

by 5:00 a.m., the latest computer model has most of the heavy rain past. the roads are going to be wet for the morning rush. no doubt about that. but the main area, the heaviest of the rain, should be past us. there will still be showers around but not as bad as what we will see a few hours earlier. then we get some breaks during the middle of the day, then some showers and thunderstorms can develop during the afternoon, and then tomorrow night, it clears out real nicely, setting us up for some beautiful weather for the rest of the week. for tonight, the rain around, especially after midnight. that's when it gets heavy at times. 70 for the low in philadelphia. tomorrow, we have some early, very early showers and thunderstorms, then some late in the day showers and storms. there may be many hours in between without rain, though. going to be warm and humid, temperature into the mid 80s. the seven-day forecast, lower humidity coming on wednesday,

the governor of colorado has declared a state of emergency today after a river turned into toxic sludge over the weekend. the environmental protection agency says three million gallons of waste water spilled from the gold king mine, three times bigger than the original

estimate. now the epa is concerned about health risks, though one official says she does not believe any wildlife is in great danger. it is the last thing you want to see when you head to the shore, brown water in the bay. >> but that's exactly what happened in seaside park. >> you can see a large plume of silt extending into barnegat bay. containment booms remain at the site near a storm water pumping station. state officials say the plume has since dissipated and insists the water is safe. the hefd the environmental group save barnegat bay tells lawmakers she believes the plume is a result of issues with a new post-sandy drainage system along route 3 that's designed to better alleviate flooding. >> the buildup of silt over time, that silt collects bacteria. there's no way unless we monitor and maintain the pump stations that it will be healthy or safe for the bay or people that live here. >> officials tested the water and insist it's safe. the state department of transportation says the plume
