that is under way today for the 101 trolley that starts in media and the 102 trolley, which starts in sharon hill, as well as the norristown high-speed line. >> those modes take you through delaware county. they'll drop you off at 69th street. that same three-day pass that you won, you can now use that to get on the market frankfurt line to bring you into 30th street station. >> reporter: the norristown high-speed line is bringing in people from villanova and gulf mills to 69th street terminal. from there they may take the market frankfurt line to 30th street. 31,000 passes are up for grabs until 11:59 tonight. here's a reminder, if you've been notified you won a regional rail pass for the week the pope is in town, you can purchase those regional rail passes by tomorrow night at 11:59 p.m. now, in the next half hour, we're going to tell you about other activities under way today

in anticipation of the pope arriving in late september. live now from center city, monique braxton, "nbc10 news." and you can count on nbc10 for complete coverage leading up to the pope's historic visit. ahead at 11:30, nbc10's tracy davidson will take you inside the seminary in montgomery county where pope francis will be spending the night. check the nbc10 app for a breakdown of all the transportation visits for the papal visit and there's quite a few. you'll see a full rundown of events including when and where you can see pope francis. investigators are still trying to figure out what started a fire at a vacant house in delaware county. the it started on this house in lewis county in lansdowne. the fire captain says there's no signs squatters were staying in the house. firefighters quickly brought it under control to keep it from spreading.

shore already with a land breeze. go through the day today, 80 degrees by noon. some fair weather clouds this afternoon. and then a warm evening, but very low humidity coming in. we'll see when the heat and humidity returns with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> a barrage of bullets sent two men to the hospital this morning and narrowly missed a pregnant woman. it happened on 30th street in the grays ferry area of philadelphia. two women and a man were sitting on a porch when a when bullets barely missed the victim's sister, who's 6 months pregnant and another woman sleeping inside the home. more violence in east germantown neighborhood. police tell us someone shot three people, two men and a woman around 1:00 this morning. two are in critical condition. police are still looking for the gunman in both shootings. got new video for you to

check out. philadelphia police want to you look at this burglary at a grocery store. they say the man you see here broke in through the basement doors of torres grosser store in brewerytown last thursday. once inside, they say he tried to break in an atm. had no luck at that. he ended up taking cigarettes and deodorant before leaving in an suv. if you think you know that man, call police. 11:5. in about two hours pennsylvania's attorney general, kathleen kane, is set to speak for the first time since having criminal charges filed against her. kane scheduled a news conference for 1:00 p.m. today in harrisburg. yesterday the head of her security detail plead not guilty in norristown. patrick reese is accused of a snooping e-mail scheme. prosecutors say kane leaked secret grand jury information and lied about it. kane has refused calls to

resign. we'll bring you that 1:00 p.m. news conference live right here on nbc10. happening today f your daily drive takes you across one of two area bridges, get ready to pay twice as much to cross the delaware river. the burlington county bridge commission will vote tonight on a plan to raise tolls on the tacony-palmyra and bristol bridges. bridge commissioner said they really need the $110 million in revenue to make safety improvements to those bridges that are more than 80 years old. the toll would go from $2 to $4 if you have cash. that isn't sitting well. >> doubling in a month, it's horrible. how much notice? they didn't bother to contact the public. >> now, this would be the second toll hike in 25 years for those bridges. the commissioners will take that vote later today.

if they approve the increase, it will go into effect on september 15th. a state of emergency could be lifted today in ferguson, missouri. it was calmer last night after days of protests marking the anniversary of the police shooting death of michael brown. about 100 protesters gathered there last night, but they were outnumbered by police in riot gear. there were no shootings, looting or property damage this time. there were also no arrests or injuries. meantime, ferguson police released this surveillance video to explain why they shot a man during protests on sunday night. the video shows 18-year-old tyrone harris pulling a gun from his waistband before shooting at an unmarked police van. officers returned fire. his father earlier said his son did not have a gun at the time of the shooting. >> that's what it sounded like there. another view of sunday's shooting. right now, harris is in critical

condition and the shooting is under investigation. at 11:07, happening now, this man suspected of murdering an elderly philadelphia man is set to go before a judge. leroy wilson is charged with slashing that woman's throw. police say wilson robbed and killed 85-year-old regina brunner. her son found her body inside her home in east mt. airy. wilson is a handyman who did work for bruner and her neighbors. democrats scored a sweeping win in a special election for three philadelphia seats in the legislature. in the 195th district voters sent donna dull et to harrisburg. she'll finish out the term of a representative who resigned. anthony williams will represent the 191st seat. that seat was left vacant by the same corruption scheme. in the 174th street, former city count krillman ed wilson is the winner there. a dangerous situation aboard

policy. >> a majority of gun owners support universal background checks. and if we -- >> reporter: news she's given the justice department the private e-mail server she used as secretary of state ensures her rivals and critics will have plenty to talk about. inspector general found two e-mails that went through that server were classified beyond top secret. clinton's campaign says the information was not marked that way at the time. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. u.s. central command in turkish foreign ministry is denying allegations that a u.s.-led air strike targeted a city in northern syria yesterday and killed more than a dozen civilians. syrian opposition sources have made that claim, saying the hair strikes also destroyed a weapons facility. central command said no coalition forces were conducting air operations in that area. crews are putting the finishing touches on the u.s. embassy in cuba ahead of its

formally entry on friday. this will be the first time in 54 years that embassy will be open. secretary of state john kerry is expected to be there. this comes after officials restored diplomatic ties between the two countries earlier this year. in japan, an investigation is under way into what caused a u.s. army helicopter to crash, injuring seven people. the helicopter made a hard landing on a navy ship off the coast of okinawa. the injured people were taken to a navy hospital. ten others aboard the navy helicopter were not injured. the tail was broken off and part of the body covered with an orange tarp. military officials say they were in the middle of a training mission at the time of a crash. a southwest airlines crew got quite the scare at orlando international airport when their jet did this. it veered off the runway and slid into the grass. no passengers were on the plane because it was just being moved from one hangar to another.

officials say the nose gear collapsed which made the plane immobile. an investigation continues. take a look at these photos out of phoenix, arizona. these shawl planes were flipped over by strong winds yesterday. the storm forced other planes to crash into each other. officials say there were actually two rounds of wind that reached 50 to 60 miles an hour. we'll somehow you a dust storm that happened in that area. patriots quarterback tom brady is facing off once again with roger goodell. we just got video showing brady and goodell arriving for a hearing in new york city. the judge is hoping to resolve their differences over brady suspension. earlier this year goodell issued that four-game suspension for patriots deflategate.

when goodell denied brady's appeal, brady sued the nfl. how about the jaw-dropping incident from new york jets training camp yesterday. geno smith was punched in the locker room and is now out for at least six weeks with a broken jaw. the culprit, jets linebacker, who was booted off the team after what was called a suckerpunch. geno smith posted this to instagram, saying, i'll be back. they say it was over money. geno may be out for ten weeks, which means he could miss the eagles game. ryan fitzpatrick will be serving as giants' quarterback. a professor recently discovered an audio recording from when martin luther king jr. revealed his "i have a dream" speech. the professor unearthed the speech during research. king delivered the speech in 1962 to a crowd at a high school

lewis, delaware, because the wind is coming in off delaware bay. it's pretty warm but not as warm as the air right now. you can see some fair weather clouds coming down through the pocono mountains but that is about it. we have no humidity and no storms in the eastern half of the country. we have warm air across the area now, but watch the heat build. not tomorrow. starting to get up there a little bit on friday. there we go. saturday. once it comes in, gets even hotter as we go to sunday and monday. we're not talking extreme heat, but certainly enough to have the potential for another heat wave before next week is over with. mostly sunny today with low humidity. high temperatures in the low to mid-80s. not going to rain. you'll notice the humidity drop even more tomorrow.

the sun has come back after yesterday's rain. but how long will it stick around? nbc10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. i could have sworn that i saw you leaving the studio to head to the beach. but you stayed here with me. >> mentally. mentally i'm already there. certainly headed there this weekend because it's going to be a pretty good beach weekend. it's pretty good in the pocono mountains. wave pool at camel beach. it's a little on the cool side. only 66 degrees in mt. pocono. fair weather clouds coming down from the northwest. that northwesterly wind flow. that's about it for any kind of moisture in the eastern half of the country. so, we're in really good shape here. 77 in philadelphia and wilmington. 74 in pottstown, reading, lancaster, allentown. and getting close to 80 degrees in atlantic city and already 81 degrees in wildwood.

we have a land breeze today so the beaches will be just as warm as the inland areas. fair weather clouds coming down from the northwest this afternoon. high about 85 degrees. and then, yeah, it's going to get even hotter. i'll tell you when the 90s come. potential heat wave with the seven-day in a few minutes. and check this out. we're getting new video of the wild weather in the central and southern part of the country here. storms damage at least eight airplanes at an airport in texas. officials say those small planes were actually tied down when the storm hit yesterday afternoon but still ripped them up and sent them tumbling. the winds were so strong, the planes were blown into the woods by the airport. the airport also had about $400,000 in damage to repair there. and take a look at this time-lapsed video of a dust storm that moved across phoenix, arizona. we see these from time to time here. it's always amazing. officials say visibility dropped to near zero and that caused delays at phoenix sky harbor international airport.

the storm also brought rain and high wind yesterday and thousands of people lost power for several hours. amazing video there, though. well, there are new details about what reportedly happened inside that upstate new york prison after the brazen escape by two convicted killers in june. as nbc10's craig melvin reports, some inmates claimed they were beaten and choked as guards frantically searched for information. >> reporter: "the new york times" calls it a campaign of retribution. following the three-week manhunt, "the times" reports prison guards from clinton correctional abused inmates while looking for information about the escape. "the times" quoted two inmates who worked in the prison tailor shop. one says a guard tied a plastic bag around his neck, tightening it, until he passed out. the other inmate, who supervised the tailor shop, says corrections officials put him in solitary confinement for three weeks and threw out most of his

belongings, including family photographs and wedding ring. following the escape, more than 60 prisoners filed complaints with the prisoner legal services, an organization that helps indigent prisoners. >> the amount of complaints we received lately and the descriptions we're hearing about the tensions within the prison, in particular in clinton, it's very concerning. >> reporter: the prison came under fire following the escape. some saying the relationship between prisoners and prison workers was too friendly. former prison tailor shop worker joyce mitchell pled guilty to charges of aiding the fudgetives. now, the new york department of corrections says the abuse allegations have been under investigation for several weeks and have also been referred to the state inspector general. any finding of misconduct or abuse against inmates will be subject to law. one inmate said he was pressured to sign a report saying, quote, i was not assaulted.

with no other choice, he said, i signed. >> if what they said was true, if things happened they say, why? why was it handled this way? >> that was nbc's craig melvin reporting. well, a new study out of temple university suggests uber car service may be reducing the number of drunk driving deathings. researchers at temple look at trend and alcohol-related road deaths. they found death rates drop by 5.5% in california cities that uber service. uber allows smartphone users to request a car to pick them up and take them to a destination, whether they've been drinking or not. well, if you feel like you're always on your phone, you're not alone. tech experts say an increasing number of people say they could be addicted to their smartphones, but there are apps that can help, ironically. moment is an app that tracks daily use of your iphone and ipad and it will notify you if you get close to a limit you

doctors in british, columbia, say obesity could be a genetic condition and they believe they isolated the gene that causes it. scientists say they isolated that gene. when they made the gene inactive in mice, they lost 50% of unhealthy white fat, associated with heart disease and diabetes. scientists say this could lead to possible drug therapy to suppress the gene. another study reveals transfat but not saturated fats are linked to an increase the risk of heart disease and early death. transfats are found in margarine and many prepackaged snack foods. saturated fats are in butter, milk and meat. finding healthy alternatives is still the best practice. the fda isn't too happy

about kim kardashian's latest selfie. she posted this selfie and an ad for morning sickness drug. the fda warned the pharmaceutical drug that makes them are misleading because they don't give facts or side effects. kim kardashian has removed those posts. bmw is working with a tech company in oregon to design a feature to alert drivers when the next travel signal is about to turn green or red. it would also suggest the best speed to avoid having to stop for a red light. the feature is being developed through the enlighten app. a future version could sound an alarm when drivers are about to run a red light. facebook is reportedly working on a twitter-like app that lets media outlets send breaking news. users with download the stand-alone app. alerts would be sent out with tweets with links to articles.

facebook is declining comment on this possible development. you probably haven't noticed, but mcdonald's has changed one of its most popular menu items, the quarter pounder. it used to have four ounces of beef before cooking. now it has 4.25 ounces of beef. mcdonald's is changing its menu, including new cooking methods and drive-through ordering process to increase accuracy. >> will have to start looking closer at my quarter pounder. a recall to tell you about. 1700 of these breeser bicycles are being recalled. the pedals can come off. obviously, that could cause a crash. the recall is for models called downtown 3 and the 3st, downtown 8 and the 8st, and downtown x and xst. breezer received four reports of pedals coming off but no one was hurt. if you have one of those bikes,

hopes of adopting him. >> it wasn't a good fit. it was a good lesson about fostering and taking into account what's best for the animal. >> reporter: that's why fostering is so important. rescue organizations like one tail at a time rely on foster parents as a way to help more lives. >> and we provide all of the supplies, the dogs are fully vetted, so there's no cost for fostering as far as medical care or supplies. >> reporter: melissa originally set out to foster her dog sport but she adopted him after realizing he helped her better handle her father's terminal illness. >> you think that you're saving them, but they're also saving you at the same time. >> and that was nbc's leanne trotter reporting. well, we had two rounds of storm yl weather yesterday. and we're not going to be seeing some stormy weather for quite a while.

now, the low humidity has arrived. that's going to be with us for two more days. so, we've got three beauties out there. a lot of sunshine, comfortable temperature, low humidity. but we do have a hot weekend coming. humidity starting to come up a bit. nothing extreme. certainly different than the next couple of days. it's a great time to wash your car because we have an extended period of dry weather in the forecast here. nothing more than fair weather clouds across the city. there is one time yesterday afternoon you couldn't see anything, it was raining so hard. 77 degrees right now. the wind is out of the northwest. that's going to keep bringing dryer and dryer air into the region. and you can see a lot of sunshine there, some fair weather clouds coming down from the north, but look how dry that country is. it is just incredible how dry it is at the moment. so, at 79 degrees, northeast philly. 74, kennett square.

one of the cooler spots in the area. pottstown, reading and allentown, 74 degrees. but right at the shore, it's actually warmer in beach haven at 80 than airport. that's about the wind direction. it's a land breeze. also 81 in woodbine. that is the warm spot. this is something we don't see a whole lot. this is a computer model projecting the amounts of rain starting on thursday with zero. and let's go into next week. and see how much rain this computer model's predicting. nothing. nothing. that is very rare. there's nothing going on in the tropics either at this time of the year we're generally starting to get big blobs of thunderstorms coming off africa. there isn't much of that. we have very dry air in the tropical waters as well. these blue areas are moist.

this area is super dry. again, very unusual for this time of the year. we're in the peak of hurricane season starting here. and going into the middle of october. today, mostly sunny skies. low humidity. temperatures in the low to mid-80s. tonight we'll be certainly more comfortable than it's been in a while. seven-day forecast, beautiful weather tomorrow with low humidity. low humidity friday, although the temperature's starting to go up. then it gets hot and a little more humid over the weekend. the eagles will be playing in some pretty hot weather sunday afternoon. >> it looked like it. thanks, glenn. still ahead, daredevil nik wallenda just did something he's never done before.

we just got to the scene of breaking news in new jersey. a deadly crash on route 37 in dorchester, cumberland county. a bad scene with a couple of weeks. one was on fire. we're told one person died. others are injured. we don't know the severity of the other injuries. the road is obviously shut down in that area. again, this is route 347 in dorchester, cumberland county.
